Jeff Harrison Makes Successful Debut, Announces Plans
Pendleton, Ind. (September 26, 2003) ? Open wheel star Jeff Harrison
made the
transition to stock cars and the ASA Racing Series at Illiana Motor Speedway
on
September 20 in the CITGO/MDA 250 presented by Jani-King. The Grapevine,
Texas,
competitor secured his series debut with qualifying an impressive 12th
of the 45
competitors that attempted to earn a position in the 34-car starting field.
In the event,
Harrison suffered mechanical problems that relegated him to 29th place
finish.
?It?s a lot different to run two laps compared to a full race of 250.
You can drive around
the problem for two laps, but you can?t for 250. We weren?t ready for
a full race. We
struggled with the handling on the car all race long. It got looser and
looser as the race
progressed. I was pleased with what we accomplished in our first stock
car race,? said
Jeff Harrison.
With sponsorship backing from Adelphia, Center Pointe Communications,
Motor Trend
Magazine and Royal Purple, Harrison will make his second appearance in
the series
that builds champions at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville on Sunday,
October 19.
?We want to have a good result for the race. I had only been in the car
twice before we
competed at Illiana. We tested at Houston Motor Speedway and were within
two tenths
of a second of the pole time. Then in practice at Illiana, we?re a second
off the pace. We
had a qualifying lap, but we are looking to have a consistent car in the
race.?
Harrison will compete in the full 2004 schedule, competing for the prestigious
$50,000
Rookie of the Year honors.
?Obviously our goal is to win the rookie championship next season and
be competitive
every race. The biggest adjustment for me will be getting used to the
schedule on event
weekends. I?m used to being at a track for week and at ASA events you
are there for
one or two days.?
Harrison began his career in 1987 racing go-karts, scoring seven victories.
He
competed in that division though the 1996 season, winning several events.
In 1997 and
1998, Harrison competed in the Formula Dodge series. He won four out of
six races and
set a new track record at Sebring. In 2000 though 2001, he raced in the
US200 Pro
National Series, grabbing second place honors in the oval division in
2001.

The 2003 ASA Racing Series season finale is set for Sunday, October 19
at
Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tenn. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A Tires
300
presented by Greased Lightning Orange Blast and Jani-King takes the green
flag at
3:00 p.m., (Local) and will be telecast live on SPEED Channel.
Cywinski Eyes Second ASA National Championship
Pendleton, Ind. (September 26, 2003) ? Winning his fourth ASA Racing
Series event
of the 2003 season, 1997 ASA Champion Kevin Cywinski inched closer to
securing his
second career title. Cywinski took top honors in the CITGO/MDA 250 presented
by
Jani-King at Illiana Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 20 with his
nearest
championship challenger Butch Miller crossing the line in seventh position.
After 15 of 17 events in the 2003 ASA season, Cywinski has a 149-point
lead on Miller.
If Cywinski maintains a 143-point margin after the conclusion of the Pep
Boys 300
presented by Greased Lightning Orange Blast at Salem Speedway on October
4, he
will clinch the ASA Racing Series championship by merely starting the
season finale.
Cywinski has collected 11 top-five finishes and 14 top-10s in 2003. Wheeling
the
Greased Lightning Orange Blast/SK Hand Tool Chevrolet for Country Joe
Racing, the
Wausau, Wis., competitor has scored his wins at Houston Motor Speedway,
Mansfield
Motorsports Speedway, Jennerstown Speedway and Illiana. He has also pocketed
three
poles, producing his most recent at Illiana, establishing a new track
record.
Three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller is second in the point
standings. Miller
has collected 13 top-10 finishes, three wins and three poles. Miller?s
victories have taken
place at the season opening Jani-King 200 at USA International Speedway,
Toledo
Speedway and Madison International Speedway.
$50,000 Rookie of the Year point?s leader Reed Sorenson advanced to third
in the
standings, finishing a career best second at Illiana. Sorenson has recorded
13 top-10
and two poles. Sorenson leads Florida?s Travis Kittleson by 383 points
in the rookie
championship with two events remaining in 2003.
Georgia?s Mike Garvey ranks fourth in the point standings, winning four
events this
season. Wheeling the Jani-King Chevrolet, Garvey has recorded wins at
Lanier National
Speedway, Hawkeye Downs Speedway, I-70 Speedway and Elko Speedway.
Ohio?s Robbie Pyle is fifth in the point standings, just 27 markers behind
Garvey. Driving
for Wal-Tom Racing of Chicago, Pyle has collected seven finishes in the
top five
including a victory at Lake Erie Speedway and five additional podiums.
1995 ASA National Champion Bryan Reffner rose to sixth in the standings
with second-
year driver Todd Kluever in seventh spot and Kittleson dropping to eighth.
1995 Rookie
of the Year Rick Beebe is ninth with two-time event winner Peter Cozzolino
rounding out
the top 10.
The 16th event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series is set for Saturday, October
4 at Salem
Speedway in Salem, Ind. The Pep Boys 300 presented by Greased Lightning
Orange Blast takes the green flag at 8:00 p.m., (Local) and will be telecast
live on
SPEED Channel.
Casey Smith Returns to ASA With Another Successful Run
50-Lap Scramble with Veteran Rich Bickle Was A Lesson
Learned For Smith
AUSTIN, TX (September 24, 2003) – While it wasn’t exactly
where he left off, Texas teen Casey Smith made a successful return to
the ASA Racing Series on Saturday night at Illiana Motor Speedway in the
CITGO / MDA 250. He finished 12th after running much of the race in the
top-10.
“It wasn’t as good as we would have liked of course, but
being that we were out of the ASA car for several months, I don’t
think we could have asked for a much better return,” said Smith,
who said his car was good enough to finish in the top-six or seven. “We
got hung up racing Rich Bickle for almost 50 laps and that really slowed
our progress to the front. It was a lot of fun, but we were following
the 11-car (Toby Porter) up front and he got away from us because we just
couldn’t get by Bickle on the outside.”
Smith qualified his Hamke Race Cars & Parts #08 in the 16th spot
but fell back early after getting stuck behind rookie driver Jeff Harrison,
who was extremely slow at the start. Smith fell all the way back to 26th
spot, but worked the outside groove and quickly found his way back into
the top-15 and eventually into the top-10. The team had planned to stop
twice in the pits, but wound up stopping three times, which pushed them
back at the finish.
“We had hoped to make it a two-stop race with everyone else stopping
three times. Unfortunately, we had to stop three times and everyone else
stopped twice. That pushed us a little farther back than where we should
have been. We had to work through more traffic and just ran out of laps
to get into the top-10.
“Being our first race back, we struggled with the car being really
tight all weekend long. We changed just about everything except for the
driver before the race. Despite our problems, I think it was a pretty
successful return.
“These ASA cars are just so much different than anything else you
race out there. You have to do so much bizarre stuff to them to get them
to work. And with the help of our crew chief Robert Hamke, we’ve
been trying some new stuff on them.”
It was Smith’s fourth top-12 finish in five races in 2003, which
included a career-best third-place run at Lanier National Speedway earlier
this year. The only race the team failed to finish in the top-12 was when
an axle broke early at Toledo Speedway while running in sixth spot.
Smith will run one more race in 2003 in hopes he can compete for Rookie
of the Year honors in 2004. He will enter the ASA season finale at the
Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville on October 18. The team plans to test
at the track in the coming weeks.
The team also continues to search for sponsorship for this year and for
a full campaign in 2004. For sponsorship inquiries, call (512) 282-6845
and be sure to check out caseysmith.com for more information.
ASA History at Nashville Continues in October Finale
Pendleton, Ind. (September 24, 2003) – In the 18 previous ASA Racing
Series events
at the .596-mile Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, some of the top short
track drivers
in the country have visited the winner’s circle. ASA’s all-time
victory leader Bob
Senneker, inaugural National event-winner Darrell Waltrip and Florida
hot shoe Gary
Balough are repeat winners at the Tennessee racetrack, each winning on
two
occasions. Fifteen drivers have captured one victory at Nashville in ASA’s
history that
stretches back to an event in November of 1981 won by Butch Lindley.
Winning his first of two races at Nashville, Senneker led the final 116
circuits of the All
American 400 in October of 1982. Senneker bypassed seven-time ASA National
Champion Mike Eddy and then finished ahead of Butch Miller, Freddy Fryer,
Jim Sauter
and Eddy. Senneker collected $13,435 of the $70,875 in posted awards.
In ASA’s first visit with the newly designed car, Senneker captured
his second victory,
pulling away from Eddy at the conclusion of the 250-lap event in April
of 1992. Senneker
led on three occasions for 88 laps, powering around Jay Sauter on lap
233 for the final
event lead change. Eddy crossed the line 1.78 seconds behind the race
winner with
Johnny Benson Jr. in third position.
Capturing his first victory at Nashville in spectacular fashion, Waltrip
won the All
American 400 in October of 1987. The Franklin, Tenn., native drove around
four-time
ASA National Champion Mark Martin on the 399th circuit, leading the final
laps of the
long distance event. Waltrip led only three laps in the annual short track
showdown.
Other race leaders included Mike Alexander, Senneker, Butch Miller and
Martin.
Chasing Waltrip across the finish line included Martin, Robbie Crouch,
Butch Miller and
Dick Trickle.
Winning his second event at the .596-mile oval, Waltrip held off a hard-charging
Senneker in the June 1991 event. Waltrip took over leadership honors from
Mike Eddy
on the 236th lap and finished .21 second in front of Senneker. Eddy placed
third with
Scott Hansen and Tony Raines filling the top-five performers.
Celebrating his career-first ASA victory, Balough dominated the All American
400 in
October of 1984. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native led on four occasions
for a total of 301
laps. He made the race-winning pass on the 308th go-around, motoring around
Mike
Alexander. At the finish, Jody Ridley finished second with Martin, Alexander
and Butch
Miller rounding out the top-five finishers.
The second victory for Balough took place in November of 1986, crossing
the line .21
seconds ahead of Bobby Dotter and Butch Miller. Balough paced the final
96 laps,
passing pole sitter and leader Mike Alexander on the 305th circuit.
Single-event winners at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville include
Johnny Benson
Jr., Neil Bonnett, Mike Eddy, Mike Garvey, Butch Lindley, Butch Miller,
Mike Miller, Jim
Sauter, Johnny Sauter, Tim Sauer, Dick Trickle and Rusty Wallace.
ASA was involved in three All American 400 events from 1988-1990 that
were non-
points events. Butch Miller won the 1987 and 1988 editions with Gary St.
Amant taking
top honors in 1989 event.
On Friday at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, ASA and the Patriot
200
competitors will have optional practice beginning at 11 a.m. The respective
sessions
conclude at 5:15 pm.
On Saturday, practice resumes at 10:30 a.m. with the Patriot 200 field
set in pole
qualifying at 2:30. ASA qualifying for the BFGoodrich Traction T/A Tires
300
presented by Greased Lighting Orange Blast and Jani-King takes place at
4. There
will be two last chance qualifying events for the Patriot 200 beginning
at 5:30 and 6 with
the 200-lap main event going green at 8.
On Sunday, ASA’s on-track fan autograph session and live musical
entertainment are
scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with pre-race ceremonies set for 2:30. The BFGoodrich
Traction T/A Tires 300 presented by Greased Lighting Orange Blast and

Cywinski Agrees to Multi-Year Arrangement with Country Joe
Pendleton, Ind. (September 23, 2003) – Kevin Cywinski, the current
point’s leader in
the 2003 ASA Racing Series, has agreed to a multi-year extension with
his working
arrangement at Country Joe Racing of Lakeville, Minn.
Team Manager Dick Melius made the announcement and said there is no timeline
for
the extension. “Kevin has great organizational skills and will help
mold our team’s
future,” said Melius. “The agreement is more than just having
Kevin return as a driver.
He’s an important part of our future planning and development of
Joey Miller (ASA
Rookie candidate in 2004). He will continue to coordinate research and
development for
the entire Country Joe Racing operation.” Country Joe Racing has
what is considered
one of the premier racing shops in the ASA Racing Series. They are adding
a third
building to the establishment and it is targeted for completion sometime
in October.
The 38 year-old Cywinski has made 126 starts in his ASA career with 14
wins included
among rookie of the year and championship honors accorded him in 1996
and ’97. His
four wins in 2003 have helped propel him to a 149 point lead over Butch
Miller at the top
of the ASA Racing Series driver standings heading into the Pep Boys 300
presented
by Greased Lightning Orange Blast at Salem Speedway on Saturday, October
4.
Team owner Joe Miller says Cywinski is in the long term plans for his
racing company.
“I’ve never met a guy like Kevin with his strong work ethic,”
said Miller. “He leads by
example and that is exactly the kind of presence we need for over the
long term.”
Cywinski competed in the Craftsman Truck and Busch Series in 1998 and
1999
following his ASA Championship season. “I stayed in touch with Dick
Melius during
those years I went down south to compete,” said Cywinski. “We’ve
always hit it off in
that if one guy is thinking about one thing the other has been able to
continue that
thought process.”
Both Wisconsin natives, Cywinski and Melius first worked together in
racing around mid-
season 1996 when Melius served as Racing Director for the Tecumseh Products
Company. The prominent small engine manufacturer sponsored the Cywinski
piloted
entry of LaFavre Racing from mid ’96 through the ’97 championship
season.
“Working with both Dick and Joe Miller has brought us to some genuinely
exciting plans
taking shape and I’m glad I’ll be part of that in the long
term,” said Cywinski. “The
stability that our team has shown over the years, although this being
the first year that
Joe has primarily been the owner of the company, I think we’ve come
a long way
already and hopefully there will be many successful years to come.”
Regarding the long term, Cywinski seems to have a strong vision of where
he might fit in
the motorsports realm. “Years ago the only thing on my plate that
I cared about was
driving,” he said. “There are some opportunities in the future
that when I decide to drive
less or not at all I’ll have important things to concern myself
with. Right now I don’t
expect any change in that area for quite a while.”
Cywinski and his wife Traci have two daughters, Cara (2 in November)
and Marina (1 in
January).
Cywinski Dominates in ASA CITGO/MDA 250
Schererville, Ind. (September 20, 2003) – ASA Racing Series point’s
leader Kevin
Cywinski took a major step toward winning his second championship by turning
in a
dominant weekend to win the CITGO/MDA 250 presented by Jani-King at Illiana
Motor
Speedway on Saturday, September 20.
Driving the Greased Lightning Orange Blast/SK Hand Tool Chevrolet, Cywinski
set a
new track record in CITGO Pole Qualifying to start on the pole position
and then led
155 of the 250 laps to record his fourth win of 2003.
Cywinski took the lead for the final time on lap 160 with an inside power
move
underneath Gary St. Amant in The Medicine Shoppe Chevrolet. From there
Cywinski
was never headed but $50,000 Rookie standout Reed Sorenson in the ACDelco
Chevrolet and Toby Porter in the Meijer Chevrolet closed with 15 laps
remaining.
The 11th and final caution flag waved on lap 233 when Peter Cozzolino
in the A&A
Manufacturing Chevrolet spun and hit the Turn one retaining wall.
That set up a 13-lap shoot-out to the end, but Cywinski was able to keep
Sorenson at
bay by 0.229 seconds with Porter coming home in third and St. Amant and
Bryan
Reffner in the Morton Salt/Menards Chevrolet rounding out the top five.
“The car was awesome,” said Cywinski. “I was starting
to get ready at the finish because
the car was starting to get tight.
“I really have to thank the crew,” he said. “We tried
a new set-up and it was the right
move to make. We went back to the old set-up for qualifying, but the crew
wanted to use
the new set-up.”
Entering the CITGO/MDA 250 presented by Jani-King Cywinski held a 109-point
lead
over Butch Miller in the Timber Wolf Chevrolet and leaves with a lead
of 149 markers
with two races remaining.
“We didn’t want Butch (Miller) to beat us,” Cywinski
said.
Sorenson, who started 11th, said he thought he might have a chance to
pass Cywinski
on the final restart.
“I was better in Turns 3 and 4 and he was better through Turns
1 and 2,” Sorenson said.
“I would close up and then he would gain it back. It would have
been tough to pass him.
I went to the outside a couple of times, but it was too loose at the end
of the race.”
Combining Sorenson’s second place finish with the 31st showing
of Travis Kittleson in
the Bob Steele Chevrolet, the Georgia rookie locked up the 2003 Pat Schauer
Memorial
Rookie of the Year honors.
Sorenson leads Kittleson by 383 points with two races remaining. Sorenson
only has to
start either event to secure the title and the $50,000 bonus.
Porter gained two positions in the final 20 laps to record the podium
finish, but pit
strategy might have hurt the team.
“We pitted with 80 laps to go and put on right side tires,”
Porter said. “We stuck to our
plan and that hurt us at the end. About halfway through we had a good
car and pitted for
left side tires and lost all of our track position. It seemed like I passed
every car twice
except for Kevin (Cywinski) and Reed (Sorenson).
Cywinski led the first 62 laps while being chased by his closest nemesis
in the point
standings, Butch Miller in the Timber Wolf Chevrolet with Brent Sontag
running third.
Sontag claimed the lead on lap 63 when Cywinski made the first of two
pit stops as all of
the front-runners made a stop. Sontag in the Terry’s Automotive
Group Chevrolet was
chased by Rich Loch in the Viega Chevrolet and Rich Bickle in the Trackside
Charities
Chevrolet.
When Sontag pitted on lap 77, that gave Chad Wood the point in the second
Trackside
Charities Chevrolet. Cywinski regained the lead on lap 88 by slipping
inside of Wood
through Turns 3 and 4.
Three laps later Cywinski made his second and final pit stop, which again
put Wood on
the point. Wood led until lap 96 when Cozzolino made an outside pass through
Turns 3
and 4.
St. Amant went to the front on lap 147 when he got inside of Cozzolino
coming off the
fourth corner and led until Cywinski made the final pass on lap 160.
Cywinski averaged 62.503 mph for the race that was slowed a total of
11 times for 59
laps. Thirty of the 34 cars starting the race finished the event.
The ASA Racing Series returns to action on Saturday, October 4 at Salem
Speedway for
the running of the Pep Boys 300 presented by Greased Lightning Orange
Blast.

Casey Smith Makes ASA Return at Illiana This Weekend
Texas Teenager Says He Can Return Right Where He Left
Off
AUSTIN, TX (September 19, 2003) – He can smell it. He can taste
it. He can hear it. And now he’s ready to get back in the thick
of it. Casey Smith returns to the ASA Racing Series this weekend at Illiana
Motor Speedway (Schererville, IN) for the first time in nearly four months.
And the 18-year-old plans to pick up right where he left off in May by
running up front and challenging for podium finishes and possibly even
a race win.
“I’m really itching to get back into the ASA car,”
said Smith, who has spent much of the last few months racing Late Models
and Modifieds in his home-state of Texas. “It’s been nice
to be able to stay fresh behind the wheel by racing around Texas, but
nothing is like racing in the ASA Series. They have some of the best drivers
anywhere in the country and they just make you a better racer. It’s
also some of the best racing anywhere in the country bar none.”
Smith showed a lot of promise to start the year. Despite missing the
season-opening race due to mechanical problems, Smith notched two top-10
finishes in four races, including a career-best third at Lanier National
Speedway in Georgia. In fact, he was in contention for the win in that
race until getting bumped out of the lead. Despite their outstanding performance
in only a few races, the team fell short on sponsorship money and had
to pull out of their chase for the 2003 ASA Rookie of the Year. Smith
and his team hopes to race for the series Rookie of the Year honor again
in 2004.
“It is too bad that we had to pull out of the rookie race when
we did because I believe we would be right there competing with Reed (Sorenson)
for the top spot. In the four races we ran, we finished higher than he
did in three of them. In the fourth we had an axle break, but I think
we could have beat him there too because our car was on a rail and in
the top-six when we fell out. It would have been neat to race with Reed
and Travis (Kittleson) all year long, but things just didn’t pan
out that way. We’ll come back next year and prove that we are a
threat against those guys.”
The teenager will also run the ASA season-finale at the Fairgrounds Speedway
in Nashville on October 19, as well as the ASA-sanctioned Patriot 200
Super Late Model race, which will be run the night before.
“I know we can come back and pick up right where we left off. We’ve
got a great car and one of the best crew chiefs anywhere in Robert Hamke.
Unfortunately, Robert won’t be able to be in Illiana because of
a prior commitment, but we’ve already talked about what we are going
to do to the car and some of the changes we are going to make throughout
the weekend depending on what the car does in practice.”
The CITGO / MDA 250 will take place on Saturday night at 9 pm (Eastern)
with qualifying going off at 8 pm on Friday night. The race will be shown
live on SPEED Channel.
The team continues to search for sponsorship for the remaining races
of this year and for the full campaign in 2004. For sponsorship inquiries,
call (512) 282-6845 and be sure to check out caseysmith.com for more information.

The Patriot 200 Late Model Event at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville
Set For Saturday, October 18
Pendleton, Ind. (September 18, 2003) – For years, the All American
400 late model
race held at Nashville Speedway matched the top stock car drivers from
the North
versus the best drivers from the South. It was among the biggest, most
anticipated,
short track stock car events in the country. The “Civil War on Wheels”
concept will be
revived in 2003 when the Indiana based Sunoco Super Series and Alabama
headquartered Southern All-Star Series co-sanction the Patriot 200 on
the eve of the
ASA Racing Series season finale at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville
on Saturday,
October 19
Almost $85,000 in posted awards will be contested during the Patriot
200. The event
features a 40-car starting field, paying $1,000 to start. The race winner
will take home a
value of over $30,000 with a minimum purse check of $5,000 and a $25,000
value for
the opportunity to compete in the ASA Racing Series season finale with
an all expenses
paid ride. In addition, the purse includes a bonus for the top-five finishers
from each of
the competing sanctioning bodies.

2000, finishing the season points as runner-up to Scott Hantz in 2000
and Joel
Kauffman in 2002. He currently ranks second in the standings behind Bobby
Parsley,
who drives one of his Hanley chassis. Hanley has tailed 17 wins in over
60
appearances.
Current point’s leader Bobby Parsley of Kentucky has experienced
a career best
season, learning from the guidance of Hanley. Parsley won the season opening
event at
Anderson Speedway in Indiana in April and added the biggest victory of
his career in
July at the prestigious Chevy Dealers Anderson 400.
2000 Champion and Rookie of the Year Scott Hantz is always a series contender.
Hantz
has collected three wins in 2003 and has 12 for his career. The Angola,
Ind., competitor
has an extensive background in late model racing in Indiana, Michigan
and Ohio.
Former USA Modified Champion Jeff Lane has won two Sunoco events in 2003
at Mt.
Lawn Speedway in May and most recently at Shady Bowl Speedway in Ohio.
J.R.
Roahrig of South Bend, Ind., has competed the last two seasons with the
series after
being a regular with the NASCAR Midwest Series. Roahrig has scored three
Sunoco
wins.
Other top Sunoco Super Series competitors include Jim Crabtree Jr., Eddie
Van Meter,
Bull Baker, Rick Turner, Billy Barton, Chuck Barnes Jr. and Tom Hernley
Jr. Part-timer
racers that are expected at Nashville include Eddie Hoffman, Brian Hoppe,
Joey Miller
and Brad Mueller.
Wayne Willard of Georgia currently leads the Southern All Star Series
standings in his
first full year with the series. In the opening 10 events, he has scored
four wins, three at
Birmingham Int’l Raceway and one at the Montgomery Speedway.
Chad Brawn of Anderson, S.C. ranks second in the point standings and
currently leads
the Rookie of the Year Standings. Third place is another rookie Todd Trinkle
of Monroe,
Ga., with Jonathan Shields of Roundhill, Ky., in fourth position. Jeff
Leston of
Huntersville, Ala. rounds out the top five. Leston is a veteran of Open
Wheel Modifieds
racing.
Other drivers from across the southeast that are expected to be in competition
include
Tim Fryar of Chattanooga, Tenn., who has one victory this year at Huntsville,
Jimmy
Garmon of Gainesville, Ga., has scored three top-five and five top 10s
in 2003.
Two-time Southern All Stars Champion Ricky Turner of Dawsonville, Ga.,
has visited the
winner’s circle on two occasions this year taking place at Fairgrounds
Speedway in
Nashville and Lanier National Speedway. Jason Hogan of Cleveland, Ga.,

ASA Stars Return to Nashville For Season Finale
Pendleton, Ind. (September 17, 2003) – After a one-year absence,
the ASA Racing
Series returns to the famed .596-mile Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville,
Tenn. The
BFGoodrich Tires Traction T/A 300 presented by Greased Lighting Orange
Blast
and Jani-King is set for Sunday, October 19. It is the 2003 season finale
and will
determine the National Champion and Rookie of the Year.
In the most recent ASA event at Fairgrounds Speedway in June of 2001,
$50,000
Rookie sensation Johnny Sauter visited the winner’s circle for the
third occasion in the
last four events during his championship season.
“This is awesome,” said Sauter after collecting $20,390 for
the victory. “Joe (crew chief
Joe Shear Jr.) made all the right calls and we had great tires at the
end. It’s just
awesome to come here and get a win.”
Sauter passed Florida’s Mike Cope with 25 laps remaining, followed
the last of seven
caution periods. Cope had claimed the top spot on lap 241 by not pitting
for a final time
as a majority of the cars on the lead lap chose to dive on pit road. Greg
Stewart also
stayed on the track, restarting second behind Cope.
With 37 laps remaining, Sauter moved into second while Stewart and Joey
Clanton were
battling for third-place honors. On lap 265, Clanton drifted high exiting
the second corner
and forced Stewart into the outside retaining wall. Clanton continued
on with minor
damage, while Stewart was finished for the evening with extensive damage
on his No.
33 car.
Two laps after the restart, with the advantage of fresher BFGoodrich
T/A Tires, Sauter
dove underneath Cope, coming off the fourth corner and nosed ahead at
the flag stand,
to take the lead for the final occasion.
Sauter finished 1.299 seconds ahead of Cope with Clanton, Kevin Cywinski
and Gary
St. Amant rounding out the top-five finishers. Scott Hansen finished in
sixth with Robbie
Pyle, Butch Miller, Chris Wimmer and Russ Tuttle filling out the top 10.
In 18 previous events at Fairgrounds Speedway, Gary Balough, Bob Senneker
and
Darrell Waltrip have each capture two wins, topping the victory charts.
Single-event
winners include Johnny Benson Jr., Neil Bonnett, Mike Eddy, Mike Garvey,
Butch
Lindley, Butch Miller, Mike Miller, Jim Sauter, Johnny Sauter, Tim Sauer,
Dick Trickle
and Rusty Wallace.

Top-10 Sorenson Continues March to $50,000 Rookie Title
Pendleton, Ind. (September 15, 2003) – Recording his 11th top-10
finish in the
last 12 outings, Georgia’s Reed Sorenson has built his largest points
lead in the
$50,000 Rookie of the Year standings. After 14 of 17 ASA Racing Series
events,
Sorenson leads Florida’s Travis Kittleson by 271 markers. Kittleson
experienced
mechanical problems that relegated him to a 17th place finishing position
at Elko
Speedway in the Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 on Labor Day.
Sorenson has posted five top-five finishes, with only a pair of finishes
outside the
top 10. Piloting the ACDelco / Port City Racecars / Tilton Engineering
Chevrolet
for Automotive Promotions Inc., Sorenson has produced a best finish of
third,
initially at USA International Speedway in March and Hawkeye Downs Speedway
in May.
Kittleson continues to rank solidly at second in the rookie standings,

of
the John Michael Montgomery Chevrolet scored the biggest victory of his
career
in April, winning the BFGoodrich Tires 250 at Concord Motorsport Park,
passing
series veteran Mike Garvey on the final lap of the event.
Illinois competitor Boris Jurkovic is fourth in the point standings,
finishing 26th at
Elko, after dropping out of the event with handling problems. Jurkovic
recorded a
best finish of his career at Indianapolis Raceway Park in June, crossing
the line
in fourth spot. Driving the Phil Hines Racing Chevrolet, Jurkovic has
produced
one top-five finish and two top-10s.
Ohio’s Kris Stump is fifth in the freshman standings, after being
listed 29th at the

and Noah
Yoder Ford, Stump has posted a best finish of ninth at Indianapolis Raceway
Park.

American Speed Association Acquires USPRO Cup Series
Pendleton, Ind. (September 12, 2003) – The American Speed Association
has reached
an agreement with the Michigan-based USPRO Cup Series that allows for
ASA to
assume controlling interest of the nearly two-year old racing series.
USPRO Cup is a
Michigan based Super Late Model Series. The agreement will take effect
following the
conclusion of the 2003 season.
Formed in 2002 by President Ron Varney and Race Director Chris Throgmartin,
USPRO
Cup took form by racers input and by designing rules centered on their
mission
statement. The rules were molded from this input with stability, reliability;
cost
effectiveness and performance all cornerstones of the development behind
USPRO. GM
Racing, Howe Racing Enterprises and Port City Racing were among the racing
industry
companies contacted. Their ideas were instrumental in formulating the
series.
“We are acquiring the majority interest although Ron (Varney) will
continue to be a
partner with ASA and manage the race operations,” said Steve Dale,
ASA President.
“We will be involved on a daily basis with the growth of the series
in a number of ways.
This will serve to support our growing Member Track family as they want
to see a top
quality program for their facilities and this offers us the opportunity
to do that. I see this
as a real positive development for the prospective racer and for ASA.
It should be an
ideal place for drivers to evolve with their skill level and also be noticed
by others in
higher divisions.”
Plans call for the USPRO Cup to possibly be re-named using some form of
the ASA
Racing brand. The series is expected to conduct 12 to 15 events and will
initially be in
Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin for it’s first season
under the ASA
banner. The events will see the series operate both as a stand-alone program
and as a
companion to the current nationally touring ASA Racing Series.
“I think its great for USPRO to be connected with ASA,” said
Ron Varney, an automotive
engineer and the third generation of his family to be involved in motorsports.
“We will
retain many of the same rules we now have, but certainly the exposure
for the series
and the high likelihood of new talented drivers coming in is tremendously
exciting.”
Officials are planning for 100-lap green flag races with a preference
to not have
competitors changing tires, adding fuel or having to use pit stops during
the events. The
cars will include makes from three major manufacturers – General
Motors, Ford and
Dodge. They will utilize template bodies and engines from all three.
In its brief history, drivers including Butch Miller, Fred Campbell and
Dave Sensiba have
either tested or competed in the USPRO Cup series cars. Current ASA drivers
are
expected to join with many of the leading Late Model competitors from
around the
Midwest.
American Speed Association officials envision a season-ending showdown
of
competitors from racetracks around the country. The event will feature
a significant
purse and be televised.
Additional announcements will be forthcoming finalizing rules and schedule
for the 2004
season.

Pendleton, Ind. (September 11, 2003) – For a second consecutive season,
the ASA
Racing Series visits the .50-mile Illiana Motor Speedway in Northwestern
Indiana for the
CITGO/MDA 250 presented by Jani-King on Saturday, September 20. The event
is at
the front end of two consecutive races in the Hoosier State with the series
that builds
champions traveling to Salem Speedway on Saturday, October 4 for the Pep
Boys 300
presented by Greased Lightning Orange Blast 300.
Last season at Illiana, two-time ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant scored
his third
consecutive victory of 2002, taking the checkers in the CITGO/MDA 300 presented
by
Texor Petroleum Company.
Driving the ACDelco Chevrolet for Automotive Promotions Inc., St. Amant
took the lead
from Mike Garvey with an outside pass down the front straightaway on lap
269. St.
Amant then fended off a challenge from David Stremme and Kevin Cywinski,
to score
his 20th career victory.
Eventual ASA National Champion Joey Clanton led the opening 24 circuits
from his
outside front-row starting position with Robbie Pyle taking command of the
field on lap
25. Clanton reclaimed the top spot on lap 28, leading through the 51st go-around.
St.
Amant grabbed leadership honors on lap 52, but held that position for just
one circuit.
Clanton stayed in front until lap 56 when St. Amant got inside entering
turn four and
remained on the point until lap 79 when Cywinski made an outside pass on
the back
straight. St. Amant returned to the first spot following the first round
of pits stops on lap
120 and was passed by Cywinski on lap 130 on the front straight.
Garvey took command of the race on lap 154 after the second stop by leaders
and
remained out front until lap 269 when St. Amant made the final pass for
the lead. Garvey
held second until lap 279 when he made contact with the lapped car of Florida’s
Ed
Brown and spun in turn 2. Garvey recovered to finish eighth.
For most of the race St. Amant and Cywinski battled or the top spot, with
Stremme
running in the mix throughout the event before what track officials referred
to as a
record crowd at Illiana Motor Speedway.
At the checkers, it was St. Amant winning by 0.612 seconds over Stremme
with
Cywinski, Butch Miller and Mike Eddy rounding out the top-five finishers.

Baker Makes ASA Debut at Illiana with Lorz Motorsports
Pendleton, Ind. (September 11, 2003) - Southern late model standout
Regan Baker of
Alabama will make his ASA Racing Series debut at Illiana Motor Speedway
in the
CITGO/MDA 250 presented by Jani-King on Saturday, September 20.
"I'm pleased to have an opportunity to compete in ASA," said
Regan Baker. 'I'm looking
forward to working with Lorz Motorsports at Illiana. ASA is a great series
to be involved
with and I can't wait to get going. With the experience I have gained
in late models, I
feel the transition will be smooth.'
Baker will test the Lorz Motorsports No. 54 Chevrolet at the latter part
of this week at
Illiana in preparation for the event. Baker will be testing with first-year
competitor Toby
Porter and the Meijer Chevrolet.
Baker was born into a racing family as his dad, Ed Baker, drove a Porsche
on road
racing courses and ended his driving career with a victory at Daytona
on the road
course during Daytona Speedweeks.
Regan began his driving career at road racing rally's and also competed
in Topeka,
Kan., before moving south to New Brockton, Ala. in 1988 and moving into
stock car
short racing on asphalt ovals.
Driving in the Limited Late Model division, Baker recorded six wins,
seven runner-ups,
and six outings finishing in third position. He finished outside the top
10 on only one
occasion during the 1998 season.
Advancing to the powerful Super Late Model machines in 2000, Baker bagged
a win,
added three second-place finishes and three additional podium performances
at South
Alabama Speedway. In 2001, he competed in a limited schedule and finished
second in
two races at the South Alabama Speedway.
The 2002 season started with Regan finishing third in the Rattler 125
. He followed that
with four consecutive top-five finishes at South Alabama Speedway, the
only driver in
2002 to accomplish that feat.
In the 2003 "Rattler 125" Baker again finished third on his
way to another successful
season. In nine Late Model races at South Alabama Speedway, Regan has
an average
finish of 2.7, which indicates consistency and skill on the part of the
driver.
Baker has also made two appearances in the Alabama-based Southern All
Star Racing
Series, recording one top-10 finish.
Dan Lorz, owner of Lorz Motorsports, has intentions of securing the funding
to compete
in the full 2004 ASA Racing Series schedule. Any sponsors that are looking
to get
involved with Lorz Motorsports can contact them at (815) 464-4950.

Eddy, Hansen, Senneker ASA Top Guns at Salem
Pendleton, Ind. (September 10, 2003) - In 38 previous ASA Racing Series
events at
the famed .54-mile Salem Speedway, seven-time ASA National Champion Mike
Eddy,
1989 Rookie of the Year Scott Hansen and all-time victory leader Bob Senneker
top the
victory charts. Eddy has drove into the winner's circle on five occasions
with Hansen and
Senneker both earning four victories. Darrell Waltrip won the inaugural
event at Salem,
labeled the first national event in October of 1973.
Dominating the second half of the Third Annual Raider 100, Eddy wheeled
his No. 88
Chevrolet to a first victory at Salem in August of 1976. He passed Ohio's
John Anderson
on the 41st circuit and then lapped all but the runner-up finisher. The
race was made
official at the 96th circuit after an accident. Anderson finished second
with Florida's Bob
Schippers in third.
Leading the final 95 circuits, Eddy scored his second victory in three
events at the high-
banked track. On the sixth lap, Eddy bypassed early pacesetter Ellis Herbert
and then
finished ahead of Bob Coffey, Dennis Miles and L.J. Lines.
Scoring his third victory, Eddy initially won the pole position and then
led every lap of the
final segment of the Midwest 300 in September of 1978. Eddy got the jump
on Mark
Martin at the start of the event and then lapped all but Martin and third-place
finisher
Bob Sensiba.
The final win for Eddy occurred in April of 1979, finishing ahead of
Bob Sensiba and
Terry Senneker. Eddy got by early leader Rick Knotts on the 16th lap and
then was the
only competitor to finish the 150 laps.
Completing the race-winning pass on Tim Steele with 12 laps remaining,
Wisconsin's
Scott Hansen recorded his first victory at Salem. Bob Senneker was second,
just .18
seconds behind the race winner. Johnny Benson Jr. finished in third position.
Earning a second consecutive victory, Hansen again made a late-race pass.
With eight
laps remaining, Hansen drove around Jay Sauter, who dominated the conclusion
of the
event. Hansen drove away at he end, finishing .41 seconds ahead of Tony
Raines with
Jay Sauter finishing third.
Diving around Joe Nott on lap 255 of 300, Hansen bagged his third win,
finishing ahead
of Tim Sauter and Steve Holzhausen. Hansen also grabbed the pole position
earlier in
the day to make it a clean sweep.
Leading on four occasions, Hansen captured his fourth victory at Salem
in July of 2000,
the initial event at the high-banked oval with the current package of
fuel-injected engines
and BFGoodrich T/A Radial Tires. Hansen took the lead for a final time
on the 221st
circuit, passing series veteran Mike Miller. At the finish, Garvey placed
second with
former champions Gary St. Amant and Kevin Cywinski close behind.
Recording his first of four victories, Bob Senneker crossed the line in
first position in
August of 1975, beating Joe Wallace and Roland Van Arsdale. Charlie Glotzbach
was
fourth with Moose Myers rounding out the top-five finishers. Eddy and
Miles were lap
leaders, until Senneker took control on the 27th circuit.
Ending a five-race winless streak at Salem, Bob Senneker returned to
the winner's circle
in October of 1977, controlling the second half of the Championship 100.
Senneker
bypassed early race dominator Dick Trickle on the 45th circuit, leading
the remainder of
the event. Rick Knotts of Michigan was second with Mark Martin and Dick
Trickle filling
out the top performers.
In a lop-sided event, Senneker crushed the competition in October of
1988 in the
Midwest 300. Senneker took the lead on lap 163 after powering around Butch
Miller. At
the finish, Senneker finished 14.20 seconds in front of Dick Trickle with
Miller crossing
the line in third.
Bob Senneker turned in another impressive performance in June of 1990,
finishing
almost four seconds ahead of Harold Fair with Johnny Benson Jr. and Junior
Hanley
rounding out the top-four finishers.
John Anderson and Darrell Waltrip have recorded three wins at Salem with
Randy
Sweet visiting the winner's circle on two occasions. Single-event winners
included Ed
Angle, Harold Fair, Dick Freeman, Don Gregory, Jerry Makara, LaMarr Marshall,
Mark
Martin, Denny Miles, Butch Miller, Mike Miller, Tony Raines, Tim Sauter,
Neal Sceva,
Tim Steele, Bob Strait, Gary St. Amant and David Stremme.

Travis Kittleson Spends the Weekend in the NASCAR Garages
ASA Rookie Has Hopes of Racing in NASCAR’s “Big
Leagues”
CONCORD, NC (September 10, 2003) – While Travis Kittleson has been
knocking on the door to victory lane in his rookie season of ASA competition,
he hasn’t forgotten that when opportunity comes knocking, he needs
to answer. Recently the 23-year-old, up-and-coming racer had the opportunity
to visit the world of NASCAR at Richmond International Raceway (VA) during
its triple-header weekend of Winston Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck
Series action.
Kittleson put the time to good use. Instead of “stargazing”
at some of his possible future competitors, he began making as many connections
as he could while reconnecting with some old ASA friends. His hope is
that in the near future he will join the ranks of the Busch or Craftsman
Truck Series as one if its full-time drivers.
“This was a great opportunity for me to get my face and my name
exposed to a lot of the people in the Craftsman Truck, Busch and Winston
Cup Series,” said Kittleson. “Like a lot of drivers in the
short track ranks right now, I would like to have a future of racing with
some of the best racers in the country in front of packed houses at some
of the best racetracks across the country. Driving my ASA car to the best
of my abilities is important, but I knew it would also be valuable to
meet the many people that make up the NASCAR world.
“I’ve never been on the inside of one of these events before
and it really opened my eyes to all the things that go on during one simple
race weekend. I got to everything that happens, from stuff in the garage
area all the way up to driver introductions and the race. It’s all
very professional and something that I would like to be associated with
in the future. Hopefully, with the experience and exposure ASA is giving
me, someone will notice and then remember meeting me at Richmond or some
of the other races I plan to attend in the future.”
While in Richmond, Travis got to meet several of the top owners and brass
in NASCAR’s top three series, including the likes of Ray Evernham
(Evernham Motorsports), Ty Norris (Dale Earnhardt, Inc.), Greg Pollex
(ppc Racing), Jack Roush (Roush Racing) and Jim Smith (Ultra Motorsports).
“I was real impressed in speaking with some of the people I had
the opportunity to meet. Everyone was nice and willing to talk to someone
they didn’t know all too well. And with the number of up-and-coming
drivers that are out there right now, it was a good chance to get out
there and get my name and face recognizable with the people in NASCAR.
If they don’t know you, they’ll never hire you.”
Travis also reconnected with several former ASA stars that now find themselves
in the Craftsman Truck and Busch Series, including David Stremme, Joey
Clanton, Tim Sauter and Ryan Hemphill.
“I got a lot of time to talk with Joey and David, which was cool,”
said Kittleson, who recently spent an ASA race battling nose-to-tail with
Clanton in Elko, MN. “They were able to tell me what it was like
to race at this level and some of the differences between running in ASA
and in the NASCAR ranks. They also let me know some of the things they
did to help push their way into the upper ranks.”
Kittleson currently sits sixth in the ASA point standings with four top-fives
and seven top-10s in 14 races. He was runner-up at Concord Motorsport
Park in April.
Despite the team’s top-six position in the point standings, they
are still looking for sponsorship to help them in their quest for the
2003 ASA Rookie of the Year title. For inquiries, call the team at 321-693-6700
and be sure to visit traviskittleson.com for more information.
Casey Smith Staying Fresh While Away From ASA Series
Late Model Stocks, Modifieds and Sponsorship Searching
Keeps Teen Busy
AUSTIN, TX (September 9, 2003) – Casey Smith hasn’t been
seen or heard from in the ASA circles as of late, but that doesn’t
mean the 18-year-old is just sitting around idle, twiddling his thumbs.
After Smith’s team announced they would save their rookie eligibility
for the 2004 season, the youngster decided to keep his skills honed by
competing around his homestate of Texas in a variety of racecars, including
Late Model Stocks and Modifieds. In addition, he is maturing on the business
side of racing as he aids the team in its sponsorship search in their
quest to compete for the $50,000 prize of next year’s ASA Rookie
of the Year honors.
“It’s been hard sitting on the sidelines and watching the
ASA races on SPEED Channel each week,” said Smith, who graduated
from high school earlier this year. “But trust me; I haven’t
been just sitting around doing nothing. I’ve tried to get as much
track-time as I can by running a Late Model Stock and a Modified car for
a couple friends of mine. It isn’t quite like racing with the guys
in ASA, but it keeps my skills sharp and keeps me behind the wheel.”
While many recent high school grads spend their summer preparing for
college and goofing off with their friends, Smith has taken a different
summer track to success. He has spent lot of time working on both the
Late Model and Modified in the team’s shop as well as trying to
find sponsorship for his ASA efforts.
“It is very humbling to try and find sponsorship for the ASA car
or anything we are running,” said Smith. “It is tough, but
I know it is tough for everyone right now. We’ve just got to continue
proving that we are a good program for someone to get involved with. That
is another reason I have stayed behind the wheel; we can’t be rusty
when we return to ASA. We have to be right where we left off, which was
on the brink of being a top-five car every week.”
Smith showed a lot of promise in ASA by notching two top-10 finishes
in just four starts, including a career-best third at Lanier National
Speedway in Georgia. Yet, the team fell short on sponsorship money to
keep them on the track for the remainder of the season.
“I haven’t had a lot of time to work on the ASA car, but
I’ll get it back out here soon. We’ll get a few things changed
on the car and we’ll take her out to a local track and shake it
down and test a couple of new things we are working on. I’ve also
been busy working on our Super Late Model that we are going to run at
three big races later this year.”
The new Hamke Super Late Model will be piloted by Smith at the ASA-sanctioned
“Patriot 200” on Saturday night, October 18 at the Fairgrounds
Speedway in Nashville, the night before the ASA season finale. Smith will
also run the car at a $15,000-to-win show at Concord (NC) Motorsport Park
and at the annual Snowball Derby inn Pensacola (FL).
Smith will return to ASA action at Illiana Motor Speedway on September
20. He will also compete in the season-finale at Nashville on October
19.
The team continues to search for sponsorship for the remaining races
of this year and for the full campaign in 2004. For sponsorship inquiries,
call (512) 282-6845 and be sure to check out caseysmith.com for more information.
Cywinski Maintains ASA Points Lead
Pendleton, Ind. (September 8, 2003) – Crossing the finish line
in the sixth position at
Elko Speedway in the Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400, Kevin Cywinski
maintained his points lead over three-time ASA National Champion Butch
Miller, who
finished one position behind him in seventh. After 14 of 17 events in
the 2003 ASA
Racing Series season, Cywinski has a 107-point lead on Miller.
Cywinski has collected 10 top-five finishes and 13 top-10s in 2003. During
the first half
of season, the driver of the Greased Lighting Orange Blast / SK Hand Tool
Chevrolet
initially won at Houston Motor Speedway in Texas and added a second trip
to the
winner’s circle at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in Ohio. Cywinski
added his first
victory during the second half of the season, taking the checkers at Jennerstown,
Pa. in
a rain-shortened 137-lap event.
Miller continues to rank second in the standings, scoring his most recent
victory at
Madison International Speedway in the BFGoodrich Tires 250 on Friday,
July 18. The
pilot of the Timber Wolf sponsored-car began the season with a win at
USA Int’l
Speedway and earned a second trip to the winner’s circle at Toledo
Speedway. Miller
has collected 12 top-10 finishes and three poles.
Completing a late-race pass on 1995 ASA National Champion Bryan Reffner,
series
veteran Mike Garvey scored his fourth victory of the season and 17th of
his career. This
marked his eighth top five and helped him advance him to third in the
standings. With
backing from Jani-King, Garvey has scored three additional victories at
Lanier Nat’l
Speedway, Hawkeye Downs Speedway and I-70 Speedway.
$50,000 Rookie of the Year point’s leader Reed Sorenson is fourth
in the standings,
recording his 12th top-10 finish at Elko Speedway in the Greased Lightning
Orange
Blast 400. Driving the ACDelco / Port City Racecars / Tilton Engineering
Chevrolet,
Sorenson has produced a best finish of third on two occasions, initially
at USA
International Speedway in March and Hawkeye Downs Speedway in May. He
leads
Florida’s Travis Kittleson by 271 points in the rookie standings.
After taking the checkers in Erie, Pa., Ohio’s Robbie Pyle finished
second at Elko on
Labor Day. He remains fifth in the point standings, just 30 markers behind
Sorenson.
Driving for Wal Tom Racing of Chicago, Pyle has collected seven finishes
in the top five
including a victory and five additional podiums.
Freshman competitor Travis Kittleson remains sixth after finishing 17th
in the Greased
Lightning Orange Blast 400. Bryan Reffner is seventh after posting a season
best third
at Elko with Todd Kluever in eighth. Two consecutive fourth-place finishes
have placed
Rick Beebe in ninth with two-time event winner Peter Cozzolino rounding
out the top 10.
The 15th event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series is set for Saturday, September
20 at
Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, Ind. The CITGO/MDA 250 presented
by Jani-
King takes the green flag at 8:00 p.m., (Local) and will be telecast live
on SPEED
Channel starting at 9 p.m. (EDT).

Last season at Salem, after four consecutive runner-up finishes David
Stremme used a
bumper on Gary St. Amant with five laps remaining to score his first ASA
victory in the
Tecumseh 300.
“This is awesome,” said Stremme after collecting $21,655
for his first win in 26 ASA
starts. “I feel bad about that deal with Gary (St. Amant), but we
didn’t come here to
finish second.”
Pole-sitter Kevin Cywinski led the opening 106 laps chased by teammate
Dan
Fredrickson and Mike Garvey. Following the first of two pit stops by the
leaders,
Stremme emerged in first followed by point’s leader Joey Clanton
and Garvey. Tuttle
came out in fifth with St. Amant running seventh.
Stremme led until lap 218 with Tuttle running second and Garvey in third
following 100
laps of green-flag racing, leading to a competition yellow. When all the
leaders stopped
for a second time, St. Amant took the lead chased by Stremme, Tuttle,
Fredrickson and
Garvey
The South Bend, Ind., native chased St. Amant for 75 laps following the
final round of pit
stops. Stremme looked high and low on the high-banked oval for a way to
complete the
winning pass.
With a capacity crowd on its feet for the final five circuits, Stremme,
St. Amant, Russ
Tuttle, Robbie Pyle and Jason Boyd raced nose-to-tail for the victory.
Stremme used the front bumper of his Meijer Chevrolet to get inside of
St. Amant
coming off the second corner, with Tuttle poised to take advantage of
any slip by the
two leaders.
St. Amant and Stremme raced side-by-side down the back straight and into
turn three.
Stremme drifted up in the corner, which caused St. Amant to brush the
wall, allowing
Tuttle to move into second.
At the finish, Stremme took the checkers, 1.5 second in front of Tuttle
with St. Amant,
Pyle and Boyd filling out the top-five finishers.
“I got a good run coming off turn two and our cars were equal going
down the back
straight, we bumped a little in turn three and Gary (St. Amant) brushed
the wall. We
need a win. This is a strong team and we showed it.”
In the 38 previous events at Salem, seven-time ASA National Champion
Mike Eddy tops
the victory charts, winning a total of five events. 1989 Rookie of the
Year Scott Hansen
and all-time victory leader Bob Senneker are tied for second, both earning
four
checkered flags. John Anderson and Darrell Waltrip have won three times,
with
Michigan standout Randy Sweet grabbing two victories.
Single-event winners include, Ed Angle, Harold Fair, Dick Freeman, Don
Gregory,

Garvey Wins Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 at Elko
Elko, Minn. (September 1, 2003) – Veteran Mike Garvey led only
19 laps at the
Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400, but they were the final tours of Elko
Speedway
on Monday to win for the fourth time in the 2003 ASA Racing Series season.
This marked the first occasion the Minnesota Labor tradition was held
at Elko Speedway
after several decades of successful events at Minnesota State Fairgrounds
Speedway.
Garvey in the Jani-King Chevrolet used lots of patience on the .375-mile
Elko Speedway
oval, moving into the top 10 after making a final pit stop on lap 219
and then
methodically worked his way to the front.
Garvey got inside of 1995 ASA National Champion Bryan Reffner in the
Menards/Morton
Salt Chevrolet on lap 382 to take command of the race and then survived
a final restart
with five laps remaining to record his 17th career win.
“I was being careful to save the tires for the final 100 laps,”
said Garvey of the win
before a capacity crowd. “Our car was consistent over the final
half of the race. We
started out loose on the day, but the crew did a great job of making the
right
adjustments.”
Reffner made a final run at Garvey on the last restart, looking to the
outside entering
turn 4, which allowed Robbie Pyle in the CITGO Chevrolet to slip past
for second place.
Garvey went on to win by .532-seconds over Pyle with Reffner, Cool Shirt
Cool Move of
the Race Rick Beebe and Todd Kluever rounding out the top five.
“Bill McGowan (crew chief) made the right calls,” said Pyle
of his second place finish.
“The changes the crew made really paid off at the end. I really
didn’t have anything for
Mike (Garvey) at the end.”
Reffner, who made two pit stops within the first 100 laps, said the tires
just went away at
the finish.
“With 10 of 15 more caution laps I could have kept the tires cool
and we would have
been okay, but under the green flag laps Garvey’s fresher tires
prevailed,“ said Reffner,
the highest finisher of the seven former ASA Champions.
“We tried to use pit strategy to record the win. We just came up
a little bit short,” added
Reffner, who earned the Greased Lightning Hard Charger Award, after advancing
19
positions in the 400-lap event.
2002 ASA Champion and current Busch Series competitor Joey Clanton in
the Terry’s
Automotive Group Chevrolet led all but three laps in the opening 123 circuits,
but was
forced to make two pit stops under the first round of pit stops for the
race leaders.
Clanton climbed back toward the front of the pack when an electrical problem
ended the
team’s run on lap 293.
1997 ASA National Champion Kevin Cywinski debuting his new look Greased
Lightning
Orange Blast Chevrolet finished sixth to extend the points lead over Butch
Miller in the
Timber Wolf Chevrolet to 107 with three events remaining. Miller after
a late-race
contact with Greg Stewart crossed the finish line in seventh.
Rookie point’s leader Reed Sorenson of Georgia extended his margin
over Florida's
Travis Kittleson with posting his 12th top-10 finish. Sorenson finished
in ninth position
after making a late-race pass on fellow freshman competitor Davin Scites.
Kittleson an
early race contender lost three laps in the pit area for repairs, finishing
17th. Sorenson
leads Travis Kittleson, who finished 17th, by 271 points.
The ASA Racing Series returns to action on Saturday, September 20 at
Illiana Motor
Speedway in Schererville, Ind., for the running of the CITGO/MDA 250 presented

Wimmer Capture First ASA Pole
Elko, Minn. (August 31, 2003) – Wisconsin veteran Chris Wimmer
captured his first
American Speed Association pole position for today’s running of
the Greased Lightning
Orange Blast 400 at Elko Speedway.
Wimmer captured the pole position in his 54th career ASA start and became
the 91st
different driver to win the top qualifying spot in the 36-year history
of the Pendleton-
based racing series.
Twenty-nine of the 41 drivers to make qualifying runs on Sunday at the
.375-mile oval
topped the track record of 14.18-seconds set in 2002 by Robbie Pyle.
Seven former ASA champions, probably a first in series history, will
take the green flag
on Sunday. Those champions include Bryan Reffner, Tim Sauter, Dick Trickle,
Joey
Clanton, Gary St. Amant, Kevin Cywinski and Butch Miller.
The Greased Lightning Orange Blast 400 will be telecast live on The Speed
Channel
starting at 1:30 p.m.
Winner toured the oval at 13.806-seconds (97.784 mph) as the 15th car
to make a
qualifying attempt and then held on as 2002 ASA champion Joey Clanton
and rookie
contender Travis Kittleson made runs at the top spot.
Clanton will start on the outside of the front row with a lap of 13.815
seconds (97.720
mph) with Kittleson starting third with a time of 13.824 seconds (97.656
mph) with Joey
Miller and Reed Sorenson rounding out the top five.
“It’s real nice to finally get that first pole,” said
Wimmer. “The car has been excellent all
day. We made very little changes to the car during the two practice sessions.
Here you
have to try and not use a lot of brake and its important to get off the
corner early.
“I didn’t know if the time would hold up,” he said.
“I knew that both Travis (Kittleson) and
Mike (Garvey) were fast all day.”
Clanton said the crew made adjustments on the Terry’s Automotive
Group Chevrolet and
got the car dialed in during the second practice session.
“We went back to the set-up we used to win the race here last year,”
said Clanton. “The
car got better as the temperatures went up. Coming back to ASA is a lot
of fun and it’s a
lot more relaxing.”
Clanton is driving a car that he drove to numerous victories in 2002
on his way to the
ASA title and once purchased by Terry Koons during the off season. Clanton
is now
competing with the Busch Grand National Series.
Kittleson said his Bob Steele Chevrolet’s set-up really worked
well throughout the day.
“This track is really easy to overdrive on,” he said. “I
wanted to make sure we had two
smooth laps. We have an awesome car for the race. This is a track where
you can’t use
up the brakes and have to get on the gas early.”

Butch Miller inks deal with SS Racing for 2004
Pendleton, Ind. (August 29, 2003) – Three-time American Speed Association
Champion Butch Miller and SS Racing have agreed on a deal that will keep
Miller in the No. 52 Timber Wolf car through the 2004 season.
“This is a great opportunity for me,” said Miller, a native
of Coopersville, Mich.
“SS Racing is a quality organization and Ken Smith is a great owner.
He gives
this team everything that it takes to be competitive on the track and
understands
what we need to do to get it done. It comes down to me getting it done
on the
track. I couldn’t see myself with any other team in any other series.
This is a
perfect fit for me.”
"I am really excited to have this deal done with Butch this early"
said team owner
Ken Smith. Having this out of the way will allow Butch and the #52 Timber
Wolf
team to concentrate on winning the 2003 ASA National Championship"
Since Miller joined the SS Racing team part way into the 2002 season,
Miller has
collected six wins and seven poles. In just 25 races with the Indianapolis-based
SS Racing team, Miller has finished in the top-five 15 times and in the
top-10 an
amazing 20 times. Miller is currently second in the 2003 ASA National
Championship point standings.
Earlier this season, Butch Miller recorded the 50th pole of his ASA career,
becoming the all-time leader in that category, surpassing fellow Michigan
native
Bob Senneker. Miller’s 49 career wins positions him behind only
Senneker and
Michigan’s Mike Eddy on the career list.
