Cleveland Speedway honors champions and holds practice on October 18

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Sept. 30) After rain postponed the SAS Fall Classic and the crowning of the 2003 division champions, Cleveland Speedway officials have announced the rescheduling of both events. The 2003 champions will be honored during a practice session set for October 18 and the Fall Classic will be run on November 1.

"Rescheduling rained out races is never easy, but this time of year there are so few dates left it becomes even more difficult," said Cleveland Speedway owner and promoter Joe Lee Johnson. "Southern All Star officials told us that the Fall Classic would either be run on November 1 or we would have to cancel the race. With point battles and championships on the line we never like to cancel a race."

Cleveland Speedway will be opened from 4 to 9 PM on October 18 for practice. The practice will be for all divisions and the champions for all divisions will be honored at a 5 PM ceremony in an infield. The grand stands are free and there is a $10 charge in the pits.

SAS Championship Point Battle returns to Cleveland Speedway

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Duayne Hommel and Clint Smith have been locked in a torrid battle for the 2003 Southern All Star championship all season long. As the season winds down the battle continues to heat up as the traveling Late Model stars come to Cleveland for the SAS Fall Classic on Saturday September 27.

The two SAS championship contenders are no strangers to Cleveland Speedway and both have had success on the tricky clay oval.

Hommel, the defending SAS champion, has a love affair with Cleveland Speedway. In the last two years he has won all but two of the SAS events at the third mile speed plant. Multi time SAS champion Clint Smith was one of the other SAS winners at Cleveland after he won the 26 running of the Coca Cola Tennessee Memorial in May.

The mix of SAS regulars and local hot shoes will make sure that Hommel and Smith will have their hands full in the $4,000 to win event. SAS regulars Mike Head, Chris Madden, Jeff Cooke and Terrance Nowell will all be trying to add to their championship point total. Newly crowned Cleveland Speedway Late Model champion Paul Tims will lead the local contingent of Chris Beavers, Lamar Scoggins, John Owenby, Jake Lowery, Todd Morrow and a host of others who have every intention of sending the travelers home empty handed.

In addition to the SAS main event there will be racing in Claimer Late Model, Hobby, Pony and Street Stock.

On Saturday September 27 the pits will open at 2PM the grandstands at 4PM with racing at 7PM. Adult grandstand tickets are $15, kids 6-11 $3 under 6 are free. Pit passes are $25.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (August 17) Defending Late Model champion Todd Morrow came from mid-pack to take the lead from Chris Beavers and go on to win the Late Model feature at Cleveland Speedway Saturday night.

Cleveland Speedway Mid-Season Championship to Dixon

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Richard Dixon crossed the line in third, but after post race inspection found that he had won the Hobby Mid-Season championship event at Cleveland Speedway Saturday night.

Track officials inspected engines after the Hobby feature. As a result of the inspection it was determined that the first two cars across the line as well as the fourth and seventh did not meet the rules. This disqualified Jerry Coffman, Glenn Seaton Jr., Scott Boyd and Lonnie Raines and moved Dixon to first, James Nichols to second and Donald Forgey to third. Kenny Pierce and Michael Clements now rounded out the top five.

In Super Late Model action defending champion Todd Morrow parked his Boen Truck and Trailer, Race Engine Design powered Rocket entry in victory lane for the first time this season. Finishing second was Chris Beavers the winner of the last two features. Following Morrow and Beavers across the stripe were Dewayne Smith, John Owenby and Mike Tinker.

Rounding out the top 10 were Jason Lowery, Paul Tims, Bobby Mayse, Chris Stewart and Eddie Benefield.

Justin Winters continued his hot hand in Claimer Late Models as he streaked to his third win of the season. Jim 'O' was second, Chad Anderson third, Ty McGee fourth and Glenn Seaton III fifth.

Cleveland's Scott Ledford led every lap to take the feature win in the Pony division. On his way to the win Ledford was able to keep Jon Smith, Danny Burnette, Jason Spraker and Nathan Hair in his rearview.

Chad Holcomb and Jason Seaton finished the Street Stock feature one and two. Which is how they line up in the championship point battle as Seaton trails Holcomb by a scant 10 points. Robin Baker, third in points, was third across the line with Tommy Kesley and Gary Levi Jr.

Cleveland Speedway's 8th Annual SAS Shamrock this Saturday

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - After rains postponed the first attempt the second attempt at running the 8th Annual Southern All Star Shamrock 60 will take place this Saturday at Cleveland Speedway.

When the track was ironed out and ready for hot laps the rains came putting a halt to what had all the ingredients to make the 8th Annual Shamrock a real barn burner. Although it was cloudy and there had been some sprinkles there were 65 Southern All Star Super Late Models in the pits and the grandstands were 2/3 full.

"All we lacked was a little good weather and we would have really kicked off the season in style," said Joe Lee Johnson. "We had a great bunch of cars and fans and everyone was ready to get after it, but the rain didn't hold off."

The bulk of the entries are expected to return. However, with two regular season races under their belts at Cleveland the local Late Model drivers and teams will have a bit of home track advantage as they try to keep the bulk of the $5,000 to win purse at home.

The 8th Annual Shamrock is a one-day show that will include racing in all local classes. The pits open at 2PM and the grandstands open at 4:00 PM. Hot Laps start at 6:00 PM. Racing at 7:30.

Cleveland Speedway is located on US 11 just north of the US 64 bypass in Cleveland, Tenn. For more information call the track (423) 479-8574 or visit www.clevelandspeedway.com/

Cleveland Speedway ready to try again Saturday

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - With rain taking two out of the first three events of the 2003 season at Cleveland Speedway the officials at the 1/3 mile clay oval are shaking their heads.

"We are not the only ones that are dogged by rainy weather this spring, but that doesn't make things any better. Everyone needs to have pretty weather and good racing to get the season going," said Joe Lee Johnson. "One for three might be good in baseball, but it's not worth much in racing."

Over the winter Johnson had considered opening with the Shamrock, but not opening the regular season until after Easter.

"I thought about having the Shamrock and then waiting until late April to start the regular season, but it didn't work out that way," continued Cleveland Speedway's owner and promoter. After getting the track ready and having practice I really started getting the itch to race. When the Shamrock got rained out I knew that no matter how good an idea waiting a month to race might be it wasn't going to happen. This is a race track it is spring and it is time to race."

With a less than wonderful forecast for this Saturday's race Johnson will again question his sanity as he gets the track ready with a threat of rain.

Regular racing in all classes continues this Saturday night. Saturday April 12 is the date for the rescheduled running of the 8th annual SAS Shamrock 60.

Cleveland Speedway is located on US 11 (Lee Highway) just north of the US 64 bypass in Cleveland, Tenn. For more information call the track (423) 479-8574 or visit www.clevelandspeedway.com/

Cold and rain KO racing at Cleveland Speedway

CLEVELAND, TENN. - A cold rain and a forecast of more rain and snow showers have forced Cleveland Speedway to cancel racing this Saturday March 29th.

"At least the weather showed what it was going to do early in the day and not just before hot laps like the Shamrock," said Joe Lee Johnson. "This time of year the weather is always questionable. Hopefully this will be the end of it and we can get some good racing weather."

Racing action will return to the famed third mile clay oval next Saturday night April 5 at 6 PM.

The 8th running of the Southern All Star Shamrock 60 will be held on Saturday April 12. Pits will open at 1PM, Grandstands at 5PM with hot laps at 6PM

Lamar Scoggins Wires Cleveland Speedway Late Model feature

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Lamar Scoggins took the win in the season opening Late Model feature at Cleveland Speedway Saturday night. The Georgetown, Tennessee hot shoe was able to keep the 17 other Super Late Models in his wake as he led every lap in a convincing win.

Following Scoggins across the stripe were Bobby Mayse, Mike Tinker, Paul Tinker and Chuck Tinker.

Derrick Duggan, Chris Beavers, Todd Morrow, DeWayne Smith and Billy Mayo rounded out the top 10.

After a runner up finish in Claimer Late Model points in 2002, Glen Seaton III served notice that he wants the top spot in 2003 by dominating the season opener. Charles Clinton finished in second with Jonathan Winters, Barney Stiles and Lewis Johnson rounding out the top five.

Defending Hobby champion Richard Dixon of Cleveland picked up where he left off last year as he edged Glen Seaton Jr. to win the Hobby feature. Following Dixon and Seaton across the line were Shawn Reece, Donald Forgey and Jim Twiggs.

Scott Ledford got his season off to a good start as the Cleveland racer kept Danny Burnette behind him to take the Pony feature win. Greg Henderson, Gary Jenkins and last years champion Jason Spraker.

Chad Holcomb was able to hold off challenges from Jason Smith and Robie Baker to take the feature win in the ever-exciting Street Stock division. Baker was second, Quention Bear was third, Smith fourth and Jeff King fifth.

Regular racing in all classes continues next Saturday night. Saturday April 12 is the date for the rescheduled running of the 8th annual SAS Shamrock 60.

SAS and Cleveland Speedway Officials move Shamrock Date

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Southern All Star and Cleveland Speedway officials announced today that the 8th running of the Shamrock 60 has been rescheduled for Saturday April 12.

When the rains came and forced officials to postpone the Shamrock 60 it was moved to the next open date for the Southern All Star Series that was March 29. On Monday it was brought to the attention of the officials that the 29th was when Tazewell Speedway had scheduled their annual Spring Fling.

"We thought that the 29th was an open date, but we had over looked Tazewell Speedway's Spring Fling. When it was brought to our attention we immediately looked for another date and came up with April 12," said "When ever possible we honor other area tracks traditional dates. Over the years we have found that by doing so we don't abuse our fans and competitors."

The 8th running of the Southern All Star Shamrock 60 will be held on Saturday April 12. Pits will open at 1PM, Grandstands at 5PM with hot laps at 6PM

Cleveland Speedway Opens 2003 Season March 22

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Rain postponed the 8th running of the SAS Shamrock 60 this past Saturday at Cleveland Speedway which makes this Saturdays regular racing program the season opener.

"With the make up date for the Shamrock being two weeks down the road this weekends season opener will enable the Late Model drivers to shake off winter and get dialed in," said Cleveland Race Director T.A. Hicks. "This could really help the local drivers and we expect a number of drivers from around the area to take advantage of what will amount to a paid practice."

Opening day will kick off the 26th season that Cleveland Speedway has been under the ownership and leadership of Joe Lee Johnson. All the Cleveland Speedway regular divisions, Super Late Models, Claimer Late Models, Hobby, Pony and Street Stocks will try the tricky 1/3 oval complete with new sheet metal new paint and high hopes and aspirations.

The pits will open at 4 PM, the grandstands at 5 Pm with hot laps at 7PM.

The 8th Annual SAS Shamrock has been rescheduled for Saturday March 29. Pits will open at 1 PM, grandstands at 4PM with hot laps at 6 PM. All rain checks from the 3/15/03 rainout will be honored.

Rain Postpones SAS Shamrock at Cleveland Speedway.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - With 65 Southern All Star Late Models ready to run the 8th Annual SAS Shamrock 60 and a good crowd on hand to cheer them on Saturday night the last thing Cleveland Speedway wanted to do was postpone the race.

"The worst thing that can happen did happen and we had to postpone the race," said Cleveland promoter Joe Lee Johnson who had the track ironed out and ready for hot laps when the rain started. "It would have taken us well into the night to get the track back after the shower and there was the threat of more showers. I wanted to race as much or more than anyone here, but there was nothing we could do."

Southern All Star officials were shaking their heads as two of their three races this season have been rained out and the opener was affect by the wet stuff.

"I know we need rain in the Southeast and the rain we have been getting is helping to eliminate the drought. However there are six other days in the week that it can rain all it wants," commented Southern All Star's Lynn Acklin echoing the sentiments of many.

The 8th Annual SAS Shamrock has been rescheduled for Saturday March 29.

Cleveland's 8th Annual Shamrock is Looking Good

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - There are less than five days left until Cleveland Speedway kicks off the 2003 with the 8th Annual Southern All Star Shamrock on Saturday March 15. The weather is warming the forecast looks good and the drivers and fans are ready to race. All the ingredients are in place for another thriller

"We have had a very wet winter, but the weather pattern is beginning to change and it's starting to look and feel like spring in the Tennessee Valley. " said Cleveland owner and promoter Joe Lee Johnson as he reestablishes his relationship with the water truck. "The fans, drivers and everyone at Cleveland Speedway are coming out of hibernation and are ready to race. The Shamrock is a great way to shake winter and start the new season."

Cleveland's regulars welcome the additional challenge. Led by Cleveland's Late Model champion Todd Morrow Cleveland Speedway's Super Late Model drivers Chuck Tinker, P.D. Doss, Paul Tims, Mike Tinker, DeWayne Smith and more will defend Cleveland's honor against the SAS invaders.

"Racing a regular Saturday night feature at Cleveland is tough enough, but when you add the Southern All Star regulars and other top drivers to the deal it's a serious challenge," said Morrow. "You always want to race the best at your own track, but there isn't much of a home field advantage at Cleveland. It isn't like most of these guys are strangers to this place."

Defending SAS champion Duayne Hommel, who won three of the four SAS races at Cleveland in 2003, will be one of the favorites to win. As will SAS 2002 Rookie of the Year Terrance Nowell, who won the SAS opener at Green Valley. Add Ray Cook, David Payne, the Chastain brothers, John Jones and others to the SAS regulars and just making the race will be quite an accomplishment.

The 8th Annual Shamrock is a one-day show that will include racing in all local classes. The pits open at 12 Noon and the grandstands open at 4:00 PM. Racing starts at 6:00 PM.

Cleveland Speedway kicks off 2003 season with 8th Shamrock

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Cleveland Speedway will kick off the 2003 racing season Saturday March 15 with the eighth running of the O'Reilly Southern All Star Shamrock 50. Under the guidance of Joe Lee Johnson the 1/3 mile speed plant has been offering top quality Southern Dirt Track Racing since 1972 and the 2003 season is shaping up to be the best yet.

"We have everything in place to have the best year yet," commented Johnson. "The track is right and all the classes are highly competitive which makes the entertainment level the highest it has been in years. Just to put more frosting on the cake we added a fifth Southern All Star race this year."

Last years Shamrock winner, Duayne Hommel, who went on to win the SAS championship has done well at Cleveland. After winning three of the four All Star events at Cleveland last year he can't wait for the Shamrock.

"Cleveland is one of our favorite tracks," said Hommel who will defend his SAS championship this year. "We do very well at Cleveland and were really pleased to see they had added a fifth series race."

All Cleveland Speedway weekly divisions, Claimer Late Models, Hobby, Pony and Street Stock will be racing at the Shamrock.

Saturday March 8 will be a practice and play day. All divisions will be able to shake down their cars and test their winter experiments from noon until 5:00 PM. Grandstands are free and a $10.00 per person charge will cover entry into the pits.

Cleveland Speedway announces 2003 schedule
(schedule above)

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Dec. 30) Cleveland Speedway has scheduled from 15 to 21 regular races highlighted by five Southern All Star events for the 2003 season. Starting in March with the 8th Annual SAS Shamrock the season will conclude on November 22 with the 15th Annual Gobbler 75.

"Over the years we have had our share of weather related problems early in the season. Some years we have really abused our fans and competitors by trying to race that early," said Joe Lee Johnson, Cleveland Speedway's owner and promoter. "With the El Nino deal this winter I recommend that our fans and competitors pencil in the regular racing for March and April. We will watch the weather situation and around the Shamrock make out final decision on the early part of the schedule."

Cleveland Speedway adds additional Southern All Star date in 2003

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Dec. 12) Cleveland Speedway will host the Southern All Star Series five times in 2003. Added to last years four SAS events at the ultra competitive 1/3 mile clay oval will be the 26th Annual Johnston Coca Cola Tennessee Memorial

The eight running of the Shamrock will be on March 15 during the St. Patrick's Day weekend. On Memorial Weekend, May 24, the 26th Annual Johnson Coca Cola Tennessee Memorial race and July 19 the 13th Annual Budweiser Jean Johnson Memorial will be run. In the fall the Annual Fall Classic will be held on September 27 and the season ending Gobbler will kick off for the 15th time on November 27.

Owner and promoter Joe Lee Johnson would like to thank the fans, the competitors, the staff and everyone who helped make his 25th year at Cleveland Speedway such a success.

"For the last 25 years Cleveland Speedway has enjoyed an amazing amount of success. The reason for that success has been a lot of hard work by a lot of people," commented Joe Lee. "Cleveland Speedway has always been fortunate to have the best fans, racers, sponsors and some of the hardest working help you will find anywhere. None of this would have been possible without everyone's help."

McDowell rolls to fourth Gobbler win at Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (November 23,) Local favorite and three time Gobbler winner Dale McDowell set a new track record and added his fourth year ending Gobbler win at Cleveland Speedway Saturday night.

McDowell, who was the 11th driver to time in under the old track record, a record he set at last years Gobbler, toured the ultra fast Cleveland clay with a record time of 13.100 seconds. Mirroring his performance in last years Gobbler win after setting the track record he led every lap to take the 14th Annual Southern All Star Gobbler 75 win.

"I don't get to race here as much as I would like to, but when I do it's always great to do well at my home track in front of family and friends," grinned McDowell in victory lane with the Larry Shaw Rocket, Dover Cylinder Heads Grand Prix. "Joe Lee (Johnson) had the track in really great shape tonight. I don't know if anyone can remember when 11 cars broke the track record at any track in one night. I know I can't."

By virtue of starting on the pole, McDowell had a wider choice to tires and was able to start on a little harder tires and that made the difference. Duayne Hommell starting in the rear had to go with a softer tire to get to the front and when he got there he didn't have anything for McDowell.

"The driver shot himself in the foot and blew it qualifying the car tonight," said Hommell the newly crowned Southern All Star champion. "Starting in the rear I had to go with softer tires and couldn't do anything with Dale (McDowell) when I finally got to him."

As Hommell, who had dominated SAS racing at Cleveland Speedway this year, marched toward the front he was not alone as Ray Cook was also heading that way. Cook, who started 11th, and Hommell battled high and low as they both progressed through traffic in search of McDowell. As the laps wound down Cook passed Hommell for second and set his sights on the leader, but it was too little too late.

Clint Smith, who was plagued by a flat tire and other mechanical gremlins, ended up making numerous trips to the pits. As the laps wound down all the hard work by Smith's crew paid off as he moved up to a strong fourth place finish. Topping off another fine run at Cleveland Speedway with a fifth place finish was Patrick Duggan.

In the early goings Cleveland Speedway Late Model Champion Todd Morrow was the only one able to stay with McDowell. Morrow would later be relegated to third by a hard charging Hommel 30 laps into the 75 lap event. Cook would move past Morrow for third 10 laps latter and a broken ball joint would end Morrow's top five run on lap 45.

Rounding out the top 10 were Johnny Chastain, Doug English, Terrance Nowell, Shane Tankersley and Vic Chandler.

In the Cleveland Speedway Claimer Late Models Johnny Cloer took the win. Following Cloer across the line were Chuck Padgett, Steve Gilbert, Charles Clinton and Glenn Seaton III.

Chip Brindle out ran Glenn Seaton Jr. to take the Hobby win. Lee Hogan was third, Shawn Reese fourth and Scott Boyd fifth.

Pony Stock feature action saw Scott Ledford cross the stripe ahead of Greg Henderson to take the win. Wayne Reed, David Doss and John Smith rounded out the top five.

In Street Stock action Alex Nash took the feature win over Roy Nichols and Jonathan Hughes.

This ends the 2002 season for Cleveland Speedway. The 1/3 mile clay oval will open the 2003 season with the running of the annual Southern All Star Shamrock event in March of 2003.

Cold not a problem for Cleveland Speedway Gobbler 75

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Nov. 20) As the teams and fans get ready for the Southern All Star season finale, the 14th running of the Gobbler 75 at Cleveland Speedway this Saturday, all eyes are on the sky. As long as nothing in the form of water, frozen or otherwise, is falling out of the sky the race is on.

"Weather is always a factor in racing. You never know what you are going to get or how long it will last," said Cleveland Speedway owner Joe Lee Johnson. "Ideally you would like to have it warm and dry, but this time of year we are interested in dry. If it is dry like the weather man is predicting we will race."

No matter what the weather forecast the phones have been ringing off the hook. Drivers and fans from all over the southeast are heading to Cleveland Speedway for the last Southern All Star races of the season. Last years Gobbler drew 74 Southern All Star Late Models cars and a packed house

SAS point leader and 2002 champion Duayne Hommell, who has won every SAS race at Cleveland Speedway this year, will lead the SAS charge as he tries for a clean sweep. Defending SAS champion Rex Richey, who calls Cleveland Speedway home, is second in points and although he can't catch the leader would like nothing better than to deny Hommell his fourth Cleveland win. Terrance Nowell, the 2002 SAS Rookie of the Year and runner up rookie Dewayne Aldridge will continue their battle. The Gobbler will decide if Mike Head and Clint Smith finish fifth in SAS points.

Added to the SAS entries will be local favorite and three time Gobbler winner Dale McDowell. Look for Ray Cook, David Payne the Chastain brothers and others coming out of North Carolina. John Jones, Scott Sexton, Bo Shirley, Vic Hill, Patrick Duggan and Tommy Kerr will lead the Tennessee contingency.

The Cleveland Speedway regulars will be lead by 2002 Late Model champion Todd Morrow. Joining Morrow will be Dewayne Smith, Paul Tims, Bobby Mayse, Eddie Benefield, and 2002 Rookie of the Year P.D. Doss, Mike Tinker and more. All would like nothing better than to deny the $5,000 winners portion of the purse to the travelers.

Racing in local divisions will include Claimer Late Models, Hobby, Pony Stock and Street Stock.

Due to cooler weather the pits will open at 1:00 PM and grandstands at 4:00 PM. Hot laps start at 4:00 PM with racing at 5:00 PM. An adult grandstand ticket is $15.00 with kids 6-11 $3.00. Pit passes are $25.00.

Earlier start times for SAS Gobbler at Cleveland Speedway

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Nov. 18, 2002) With cool fall weather a reality and a dry but cool forecast for this Saturday's running of the 14th Annual Gobbler 75 at Cleveland Speedway the gate and start times have been changed.

"We always have a full pits for the Gobbler and with the cool weather this time of year we will start earlier so the fans will be more comfortable," said competition director T. A. Hicks. "We will start ironing in the track at 4 o'clock and as soon as the track is right we will start the racing program."

The Southern All Star Gobbler 75 feature will be the first feature event of the night with racing in the Claimer Late Models, Hobby, Pony Stocks and Street Divisions.
to follow.

The pits open at 1:00 PM, and the grandstands at 4:00PM. An adult grandstand ticket is $15.00 with kids 6-11 $3.00. Pit passes are $25.00.

McDowell and Hommell to lead the charge in 14th Annual SAS Gobbler 75

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (November, 11) Dale McDowell, who calls Cleveland Speedway home, will be coming home November 23rd to run the 14th Annual Southern All Star Gobbler 75. In last years Gobbler win McDowell was the class of the field. He out qualified the other 73 Super Late Models with a new track record and went on to lead the event flag-to-flag for his third Gobbler win.

"I don't get to race at Cleveland Speedway as often as I would like. When I do get the chance it is always very special," said McDowell. "Last year when we won out third Gobbler 75 the car was one of the best I had ever had at Cleveland and that made it even better."

Young hot shoe Duayne Hommell, out of Newport, Tennessee, should be calling Cleveland Speedway home. Hommell, the 2002 Southern All Star champion, in everything but the name, has won all three SAS events at the 1/3 mile clay oval this season.

"This track has been really good to me and we enjoy racing here," said Hommell after winning the Fall Festival. "We look forward to coming back in November and closing out our Southern All Star Championship season here at Cleveland Speedway."

Joining McDowell and Hommell for the year end blast will be John Jones, Rex Richey, Mike Head, Terrance Nowell, Clint Smith, DeWayne Aldridge and a host of others.

Included in the one day event will be racing in all of Cleveland Speedways regular divisions. Inquiries about rules in the Claimer Late Models, Hobby, Pony Stock and Street Stock have been coming in from all over the tri-state area. Cleveland officials are bracing for an over flow crowd both in the pits and in the stands.

Hommel's Mastery of Cleveland Speedway continues with Fall Festival win

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (Oct. 5) By winning the Southern All Star Fall Classic at Cleveland Speedway Saturday night Duayne Hommel made it three wins in three races in 2002 at Joe Lee Johnson's 1/3 mile speed plant.

Using patience to ultimately take the lead from Patrick Duggan, who led the early laps of the 50 lap contest, Hommel had to hold off a late race charge by John Jones to take the hard fought win.

"This track has been real good to me and we enjoy racing here," grinned Hommel leaning on his Alert Oil and Gas, Lakeway Concrete, Pro Power Engines Warrior Monte Carlo entry in victory lane. "Duggan had a little softer tires on and I knew he would be fast at the start. When his tires started to go away we were able to take advantage and the lead."

"When you race at Cleveland you know that you are going to have to deal with John Jones. Toward the end I knew he was coming and I used a lot of race track to keep him behind me. It was a good race."

John Jones who started 13th in the 24-car field was on a mission using the whole race track to work his way to the front. Jones moved into fourth behind Hommel, Duggan and Jeff Walker just prior to the halfway point. As the four started to lap the slower cars the action heated up with positions being swapped with each turn. When the caution flew for an unrelated incident on lap 25 everyone took a breath relaxed and reloaded.

Back under green Jones passed Walker for third and found himself watching Duggan and Hommel battle for the lead. In the waning laps Jones was able to move past Duggan and mount a charge on Hommel, but ran out of laps. Walker, who never ran lower than fourth, shot past Duggan for third on the white flag lap. Rex Richey rounded out the first five.

Rounding out the top 10 were Bobby Mayse, Todd Morrow, Brandon Kinzer, Vic Hill, and DeWayne Smith.

Hommel, who was the fast qualifier with a time of 13.670, was almost unable to answer the opening bell. Just prior to lining up for the Fall Classic one of his crew discovered that after changing carburetor spacers the throttle was. With help for the folks at Stealth Carburetors, Hommel pulled on the race track and took his place next to Duggan on the front row as the field was ready to began it's pace laps.

Trenton Georgia's Steve Gilbert would lead every lap in the caution filled time shortened Claimer Late Model feature. Glenn Seaton IV was second and was followed across the line by Tim Gibson, Gene Douglas and Nick Yancy. Rounding out the top 10 were Kevin Cook, Brent Runyon, Randy Dillard, Arron Ridley and Scott Gardner.

In Hobby action Glenn Seaton Jr. out ran Shawn Reece, Jim Twiggs, Richard Dixon and Eddie Sons to take the win. Kenny Stanfield, Justin Mitchell, Travis Banther, Edward Yancy and Steve Hufford were the second five to cross the line.

Michael Luna had it his way as he recorded the win in the pony feature. Early leader Jimmy Brown could not keep Luna behind him or make a serious challenge to regain the lead. Brandon Scott was third, Jason Spraker was fourth and Scott Ledford fifth.

Cleveland Tennessee's Roy Nichols led every lap to take the Street win over Jeff King, Alex Nash, Chad Holcomb and Terry Graham.
