The Magnolia State 100! This Weekend!
COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI-The traditional 14th Annual Clausen Racing Products
Magnolia State100 will roll off on Friday and Saturday night October 3rd
and 4th at the popular Columbus Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi with
the main event being the $20,003 to win 60-lap Super Late Model Main event
along with companion Premier Ford Magnolia State Championship in the Open
Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Pro Street, and Cruisers.
The biggest racing event of the year in Mississippi has steadily grown
under the guidance and perseverance of event promoter Dewitt Singleton
as witnessed by a standing room only overflow crowd last year at Columbus
Speedway along with a huge car count of 214 racecars including 82 stellar
Super Late Models. Another star studded field of racers is expected to
be in hand for the 14th version of the famed event.
The 2003 edition should be outstanding as minor changes to improve the
event include the addition of two more cars providing for a 26-car starting
field not only giving two more drivers the opportunity to make the show
but also providing the fans with a full racetrack on the high banked 3/10’s
mile clay oval to insure non stop action at the Home of Mississippi Mayhem.
The format will change slightly in 2003 as well, providing more racing
for the fans and also giving the drivers ample opportunity to race their
way into the field. The Super Late Model “tentative” format
on Saturday night October 4th calls for three 10-lap B-Mains transferring
the top 2 finishers from each. Added this year will be the final “sudden
death” 10-lap shootout to make the field in the American Racer Last
Chance Dash made up of finishers 3 through 6 in the B-Mains, with the
top 2 in the Last Chance Dash transferring to complete the 26-car starting
field.
The night will culminate with the 60-lap $20,003 to win and $700 to start
26-car field Super Late Model Main Event as over $60,000 in Super Late
Model purse is money on the line.
Fans will witness 100 laps of intense Super Late Model action on Saturday
night plus the best of the best in the local division Premier Ford Magnolia
State Championships as the regions top drivers will be vying for the coveted
trip to Victory Lane garnering respect, a fine payday, and trophy hardware
for taking the win in this prestigious event.
The 14th Annual Clausen Racing Products Magnolia State 100 action gets
underway on Thursday October 2nd with an optional practice session that
will be held from 7pm until 10pm. Competition begins on Pepsi Pole Night
Friday night October 3rd with Super Late Model Pole Qualifying and an
expected six Super Late Model Qualifying races to determine the top 18
starters for the 26-car starting field. Magnolia State Championship local
divisions will also be in action with Qualifying Races as well for their
first night in competing for Premier Ford Magnolia State Championship
purses, titles, and trophies. Cruisers will run main events each night.
Columbus Speedway is located just 1 mile west of the Alabama/Mississippi
state line or 7 miles east of Columbus just 2 miles north of Highway 82
. Take the Stokes Road exit off Highway 82 and proceed north and follow
the signs. Free camping allowed but no hook ups available.

Rushing Takes Hurricane 40 at Columbus Speedway!
COLUMBUS, MS-A large field of 145 racecars packed the pits at Columbus
Speedway on the final point’s night event of the 2003 Columbus Speedway
Weekly Racing Series along with a strong field of Super Late Models competing
in the Hurricane 40. Track Championships were finalized in all divisions
on an uncharacteristically and exceptionally slick race track. Time was
also dedicated in memory of former racer Scott Brewer who passed away
last week and prayers for recently critically injured Southern All Star
Super Late Model driver Duayne Hommel.
Action got underway with “The Kosciusko Kamikaze” Anthony
Rushing customarily pacing the 34-car Super Late Model field during midsouthracing.com
Pole Qualifying tripping the lights with a 14.21-second elapsed time with
Ravishing Rick Rickman taking the outside front row for the straight up
start in the Hurricane 40. The race took multiple times to get the 26-car
starting field underway with the slick track challenging the drivers.
Finally, continuous green racing began after lap 4 with a long run of
29 laps that would see side by side racing throughout the field as Rushing
would weave his way through lapped traffic with Shawn Edwards staying
within striking distance. Eddie Rickman, Mark Stokes, Marty Hardy, and
Tombo Callahan would all have themselves a fine race for position during
this time frame.
Finally, the feature event concluded with Rushing taking his OH Hendricks/Joe
Salers Fertilizer Jay Dickens powered Rocket to take the checkers as Rushing
looks poised to be one of the top contender’s for next weekend’s
Magnolia State 100. Shawn Edwards of Louisville took home second place
while wrapping up a super month of September as the Prowler made a full
frontal assault at Columbus Speedway wracking up 2 wins along with 2 second
place finishes with his Brown Engineering Spec powered GRT. Jackson’s
Marty Hardy found the bottom groove of the speedway to his liking and
had one of his best ever Columbus Speedway efforts taking his Spec powered
mount to a third place finish. Mark Stokes had another consistent run
and came in fourth while “The WeirWolf” Tombo Callahan had
an exceptional run finishing the final laps of the event with a damaged
left front suspension while also earning the prestigious honor of claiming
the 2003 Columbus Speedway Super Late Model Track Championship.
Mark Dodson of Caledonia was the major mover of the evening charging
up through the field after transferring out of one the B-Mains to take
sixth followed by Jeff White in the Joe Minga owned #07 with “The
Mississippi Flyer” Jerry Inmon eighth. Completing the top ten were
Robert Utz and Johnny Lancaster.
The Open Wheel Modifieds had a great race with Bill Sudduth jumping to
an early lead on the high side only to see Jason Brock make the low side
work and go on to take the win. Shay Knight battled up to take second
place with Billy Tedford having a fine third place effort. Sudduth finished
fourth with David Honeycutt completing the top five. Jason Hollis won
the 2003 Open Wheel Modified Track Championship. The Open Wheel Modifieds
will be competing for $1,500 to win next weekend at the Magnolia State
Modified Championships
The Street Stocks were out in force with no less than 37-Street Stockers
signed in to do battle and that they did. The tough win was taken by “Big
Money” David Honeycutt as Honeycutt took home $425 for the evening
along with the 2003 Street Stock Track Championship. Chad Nickoles was
second with early leader Terry Kelley finishing third. Mike Barton finished
fourth with Danny Gable fifth in the all star Street Stock event. The
Street Stocks will be competing for $1,000 to win next weekend at the
Magnolia State Championships.
A talent laden field of 21-Mini Stock racers were on hand and it was
Fayette’s Mickey McAlpin taking the win from the pole position as
the pendulum has recently swung momentum back to the import gang with
Mike Minor taking second place along with the 2003 Mini Stock Track Championship.
Micheal Atkins took home third place honors with Buddy Glover in fourth
and Bo Minor rounding out the top five.
The Pro Street win went to Mike Shaw as Shaw and Mike Langford entered
the evening with the Championship still to be decided. Shaw went flag
to flag with Decatur’s Chris McElhenney taking his truck to a second
place finish making the bottom side work. Joel Wright had a fine third
place finish with Tupelo’s Paul Robinson making a high side charge
and taking fourth with Chase Christian taking fifth. Unofficially Mike
Shaw appears to have claimed the tight point’s battle over Langford
and earned the title of 2003 Columbus Speedway Track Champion. The Pro
Street class will race for $700 to win next weekend in the Magnolia State
Championships.
The Cruiser win went to first time racers at Columbus Speedway Cruiser
as the racing team of Johnny Wimberly and David Sanders after post race
inspection eliminated several cars from the finishing order. Michael Goodson
and Stanley Parker took their number 70 ½ to finish second with
last week’s winners Tommy Barton and Phillip Glasgow in third. Completing
the top five were Benji Jones and Curt Smith and the team of John Beard
and Amanda Stokes. The Cruiser Track Championship went to Jeremy Glasgow
and Buddy Glover. The Cruisers division will race for $250 to win each
night next weekend.
The Late Model Stock class put on a great show as early leader Andrew
Forstner would see Craig Smith briefly take back the lead only to see
Forstner make a high side charge to the lead and go on to take the hard
fought win. Lyn New was second with Tracy Pickering finishing third. Bo
McKee took home fourth with Bruce, Mississippi racer Barbara Blount making
her way for a top five effort.
Coming this Friday and Saturday night October 3rd and 4th will be the
14th Annual Magnolia State 100 for the Super Late Models paying $20,003
to win along with the Premier Ford Magnolia State Championships for Modifieds,
Pro Street, Mini Stock, Street Stocks, and Cruisers. Pepsi Pole Night
will take place on Friday night October 3rd and the Clausen Racing Products
Magnolia State Main Events will take place on Saturday night October 4th.
There will also be a special practice session on Thursday night October
2nd. Additional Columbus Speedway information can be found on the Columbus
Speedway Internet home hosted at www.midsouthracing.com or by calling

Edwards Back to Back Wins at Columbus Speedway!
Lyn New Takes Late Model Stock Championship Event!
COLUMBUS, MS- A cooler than normal evening greeted a fine field of 124
racecars and the Columbus Speedway faithful fans for "Church Night
at the Races" featuring the Late Model Stock "September Showdown"
Saturday night. The finely-prepped surface held up for a super night of
action, and with activities ending at 11:30, fans were able to get home
early and fully satisfied.
Last week's winner "The Prowler" Shawn Edwards sat on the front
row of the Super Late Model feature after setting fast time during of
14.24 during midsouthracing.com Pole Qualifying and drawing a “0”
for the inversion, with "Mr. Spectacular" Scott Dedwylder on
his flank. The two front row drivers rocketed into turn one at the drop
of the green in formation, with Dedwylder finally securing the lead after
a full lap of running side-by-side with Edwards in opposite grooves. Young,
hungry hotshoe Josh Fuller of Marion, Mississippi then crept in to the
picture and went under Edwards to challenge for second place as the #5
of Edwards took to the high groove behind the leading Dedwylder.
After an early caution, Edwards went back to work on Dedwylder only to
be dogged once again by Fuller, who fell back after dodging the turn 4
wall. Fuller rebounded and chased the leaders back down, while "The
WeirWolf" Tombo Callahan led a hard-racing field behind them. Another
caution on lap 11 paused the action briefly. Racing resumed as Edwards
went side-by-side with Dedwylder for the lead, with Callahan diving under
Fuller to challenge for third.
Fuller slipped above Edwards and the two went door-to-door for a lap,
with the #99 of Fuller coming out on top and diving under Dedwylder for
the lead on lap 14. Fuller grabbed the top spot only to be shifted back
to second when caution fell on the same lap. Once under green flags conditions
another Fuller attempt to dive under Dedwylder came up short, and Fuller
followed the leader ahead of Edwards while Callahan and "Marvelous"
Mark Stokes battled for 4th.
Fuller pulled under Dedwylder once again, and Dedwylder slipped at the
top of turn 4, leaving the young gun with the lead as the #33 of Dedwylder
fell back into the pack with apparent trouble in the right rear area.
Fuller kept up a torrid pace, slicing and dicing through lapped cars like
a madman until caution fell on lap 27, setting up a three-lap dash to
the checkers.
Fuller rocketed ahead with Edwards tailing, and it appeared that the
pilot of the #99 machine would capture his first Super Late Model win
until he got loose on the cushion in turn four and came down across the
bottom of the turn, letting Edwards by and into the lead. Fuller quickly
rebounded but could not make a move to get back into the top spot, and
Edwards cruised to his second consecutive victory in his Copy Systems/25
Garage sponsored Brown powered GRT on American Racer tires. Fuller, Tombo
Callahan, Stokes, and Trey Cullum rounded out the top five. Eddie Houston,
Jason Steele, Jay Dickens, Jackie Grammar, and Toby Fikes in his maiden
Super Late Model race garnered top-ten honors.
The visiting Late Model Stocks were out in force as they participated
in the “September Showdown” event as Pontotoc’s Lynn
New bested the 18-car field of Late Model Stocks to take home the $500
winner's share in the 20-lap feature event. Craig Smith of Mantachie was
the runner up with Dewayne Riddle of Tupelo completing the podium. David
Young and David Michael rounded out the top five. The Late Model Stocks
will once again be part of the Full Racing Program Saturday night September
27th at Columbus Speedway with a 15-lap main event.
Jason Hollis has once again become "Mr. Untouchable" with a
recent string of victories in the Open-wheel Modified division, and this
week was no different. Hollis was challenged early by David Honeycutt,
but fended off the #3W machine during early top and bottom, side-by-side
racing action up front as the action in the back was fierce all through
the race. Hollis went on to take another win, with Honeycutt, Jason Brock,
Greg Wilhite, and Lee Ray completing the top five.
Mike Shaw led the Pro Street field to the checkers for another win in
the division. Paul Robinson, Mike Langford, Randy Bush, and Chase Christian
came home in the top five spots.
TK King started on the pole of the Street Stock feature beside Mike Barton
and led every lap, fending off repeated challenged from Chad Nickoles.
King maneuvered around the rim of the track as the sweet smell of burned
rubber filled the air, and went on to take the win. Nickoles, Hollis,
Barton, and Terry Kelley finished in the top five spots.
Michael Pendley led flag-to-flag with a very impressive run in the Mini
Stock division, but Mike Minor was awarded the official win following
post-race inspection. Bo Minor, Scott Gable, Buddy Glover, and Keith McCool
took top-five honors.
Tommy Barton and Philip Glasgow started up front and stayed up front
in Twp-Person Cruiser action, taking the win ahead of Joe & Rose Weeks
and Wayne & Jamie Sudduth.
Coming this Saturday night September 27th is the Night of Champions as
all Columbus Speedway Weekly Racing Series Championships will be finalized.
As part of the big night of racing will be the 2nd Annual “Hurricane
40” for the Super Late Models. All the Columbus Speedway Weekly
Racing Series local divisions will be in action plus the Late Model Stocks.
Event information for this Saturday night September 27th has grandstand
gates opening at 5pm with action at 8:00pm. Adult grandstand admission
is only $10 with children ages 10 and under admitted free. Pit gates open
at 4pm. Further information can be obtained by calling Johnny Stokes at

Action got underway with “Fast Eddie” Rickman setting quick
time during Midsouthracing.com Pole Qualifying and drawing a zero inversion
pill for a straight up start with Marion, Mississippi up and coming driver

Engineering powered GRT racecar. Eddie Rickman had a strong run and finish

and Tommy Barton and Phillip Glasgow in third. The Jones and Smith tandem
was fourth and Joe and Rose Weeks finished fourth.

Boland and Gentry Take Topless Twin 20’s!
Jason Hollis Takes 2 Wins on the Night
COLUMBUS, MS-Fan Appreciation Night 2003 show featuring Topless Twin
20’s for the Super Late Models was one of the better events of the
year. A healthy crowd was on hand to watch the 113 race cars on hand including
32 of the regions best Super Late Model pilots not to mention some of
the fastest bike racers around as the kids got to race on the track as
well as part of their Fan Appreciation Night festivities. The racing would
be dramatic and fierce as each and every division had superlative racing
action from start to finish. Track operator Johnny Stokes did a magnificent
job preparing the track “while playing hurt” after breaking
his arm last Sunday in a racing incident and simply getting the job done
at the “Baddest Bullring in the South.”
Action would get underway with Mike Boland setting fast time during Midsouthracing.com
Pole Qualifying along with “The Kosciusko Kamikaze” Anthony
Rushing setting second quick time as Rushing chauffeured Joe Minga’s
second car in stead of his usual 701/2 ride. The fist 20-lap main event
would get underway after the completion of two B-Main events that set
the 24 car field. Boland would quickly jump to the lead, find the top
of the track to his liking, and never looked back. “The Prowler”
Shawn Edwards showed excellent form staying within striking distance of
Boland and taking second place while Tombo Callahan used varying lines
to work his way up from seventh starting position to round out the top
three. Scott Dedwylder was smooth and consistent crossing the stripe fourth
with last week’s feature winner Mark Stokes completing the top five.
Boland would take his third Columbus Speedway win of the year driving
his Ware Construction/Boland Performance Brown Engineering powered GRT
on American Racer tires. The popular driver of the famed #222 drew the
inversion for the second main event and the top 4 cars were inverted for
the second 20-lap main event. Completing the top ten were David Gentry,
Chris Tayes, Anthony Rushing, Marty Hardy, and Ronald Dunn.
The final 20 lapper may have been the best Super Late Model races of
the year at Columbus Speedway. Action heated up immediately with Dedwylder
jumping to the lead up top, Boland blasting into second, and the remainder
of the field fanned out 3 and 4 wide and the Columbus Speedway daredevil
show had begun. By lap 10 it was apparent that Lewisburg, Tennessee driver
David Earl Gentry was on a mission. Gentry began the night’s journey
to Victory Lane in 18th starting position and worked his way up to a sixth
place finish in the first main event and he was making use of the dead
bottom of the track and coming to the front with abandon.
The final 10 laps of the second main event would have an all out war
for the lead as the fearless gladiators got it on with a 3-way dance for
the point featured Dedwylder taking his #33 machine ever so dangerously
on the tip top of the race track riding the ragged edge, Gentry on the
extreme bottom hunting moisture and traction, while Boland would make
it a trio for the lead looking high and low all over Dedwylder’s
bumper and in the middle groove of the track. The high speed onslaught
continued lap after lap as the lead would change multiple times on a given
lap as Gentry would edge ahead of Dedwylder exiting the corners with Dedwylder
using the high side momentum to barely maintain the lead as the two racers
went side by side lap after lap with Boland looking for daylight between
the two as it was dirt track racing at its finest.
Gentry would finally nudge ahead of Dedwylder by inches on lap 18 and
hold on for the final two circuits for the coveted and crowd pleasing
win. Gentry drove his Goddard Performance Parts/K&D Automotive/Dixson
Plumbing Brown Engineering powered Warrior race car on American Racer
Tires to take his first ever Columbus Speedway win picking up a $500 first
time winner bonus along with a $100 bonus for winning with Brown power
making for a $1,600 payday for his rousing effort in the spirited 20-lap
main event. Dedwylder was “Mr. Spectacular” and came across
second with Boland completing the top three and also earning the high
point man bonus worth an extra $300 courtesy of Brown Engineering and
Boland Performance for total earnings of $1,800 on the night. “The
WeirWolf” Tombo Callahan earned a hard fought 4th place finish among
the furious racing throughout the field with Rushing completing the top
five. Ronald Dunn had a great run with a sixth place finish followed by
Jackson’s Marty Hardy, hard charging Chris Tayes, 2002 SUPR Champion
“The Lugnut” Rodney Wing, and Corinth’s Mark Sartain
completed the top 10 in the epic event.
The Open Wheel Modified main event would see Jason Hollis overcome a
sluggish start after being involved in a heat race incident to return
to form as he put on a show coming from 13th on the field to take a thrilling
win. The race saw pole sitter Shay Knight, Todd Gray, Lee Ray, and Jeremy
Shaw all engage in great racing up front. Gray would take the ride of
the night as he slipped of the zone to barrel role his racecar off the
top of turn 4. Fortunately Gray walked away unscathed from the nasty incident.
Hollis would charge through the field and take the lead late in the event
for one of his harder fought victories of his career. “The Wanted
Man” Lee Ray was second followed by Jeremy Shaw in third. Mike Palasini
finished fourth with Jason Brock finishing the top five.
The Street Stock feature would see Hollis driving the #97 car of Harold
Trimm once again and Hollis completed the Quinella by taking the win in
the always competitive Street Stock division. Marvin Beard finished second
with perennial front runner Chad Nickoles making the charge up from 10th
starting position to finish third. “Big Money” David Honeycutt
and Mike Barton complete the top five.
The Pro Street race featured great racing as well with no less than three
different leaders in the excellent 15-lap main event. Randol Harlowe would
set sail early in the event only to see Chase Christian take his turn
up front before Mike Langford decided it was time for him to take the
lead for good. Langford would go one to take the exciting win followed
by Christian, and Billy Cook. Bobby Nickoles and Harlowe completed the
top five.
The Mini Stock drivers once again exemplified the great racing they put
on week after week. Scott Gable jumped to the early lead from the front
row and had the #66 Mustang strolling. Gable would later experience mechanical
difficulty with Mike Minor lurking behind to capture the lead and go on
to take another win for the Jenna Race Shop and Toyota contingent back
to Alabama as he had to fight off the late race challenges from second
place finisher Mickey McAlpin. Bo Minor was third, Robert Sanders fourth
with Vernon driver Buddy Glover in fifth.
Cruiser action would see the team of Jeremy Robertson and Alan Hall make
their way through the pack from 11th starting position to take the win.
Glasgow and Glover were second, with the Shelton team third. Kenneth Roach
and Craig Murray were fourth followed by Benji Jones and Kurt Smith.
Coming this Saturday night September 13th is a Full Racing Program for
the Columbus Speedway Weekly Racing Series. The show will include the
return of the Late Model Stocks to the line up for what should be another
top shelf event.

Mark Stokes Rockets to Victory at Columbus Speedway!
COLUMBUS, MS- Mark Stokes came to Columbus Speedway Saturday night with
a clean slate, including a new car, a new color scheme, and a new number.
It all worked out on Saturday night for "Marvelous" Mark Stokes
at Columbus Speedway as the popular local driver took his first victory
of the 2003 season. A strong contingent of 105 race cars in six divisions
and the Columbus Speedway faithful fans braved a threatening weather forecast
for what would be a thrilling night of Weekly Racing Series action.
Action got underway as 2001 Super Late Model track champ "The Prowler"
Shawn Edwards would lead the way in Midsouthracing.com Pole Qualifying,
his 14.25-second lap beating out Chris Tays' 14.34 and track record holder
"The Kosciusko Kamikaze" Anthony Rushing's 14.38. Edwards would
draw a "4" pill for the feature inversion, placing Rushing outside
points leader "The WeirWolf" Tombo Callahan on a potent main
event front row.
Rushing blasted into turn one near the wall at the green with Callahan
diving to the hub, while Edwards and Hays battled for third as Stokes
grabbed fourth from his 6th place starting spot. Edwards would take third
and repeatedly challenge Callahan, now following Rushing on the rim, for
second, but a quick series of cautions would break up the action early
on.
Once underway, Rushing would pull out front as Stokes fought Edwards
door-to-door for third. Rushing would soon approach heavy traffic and
both Callahan and Edwards would move in. On lap 12, Callahan dove under
Rushing to grab the lead, followed closely by Edwards, and Rushing would
quickly fade and pull to the infield. Edwards then went to the low side
to duel Callahan for the lead in a furious, multi-lap, side-by-side battle
that ended only when Edwards came to a stop in turn 4 on lap 20, bringing
out a caution and leaving Callahan with the lead. Tays would be on Callahan's
bumper on the restart, but Stokes was quick to dive in under Tays, going
door-to-door with the #818 before Tays secured 2nd place again before
caution halted the race again on lap 26. Callahan's left rear tire was
going flat but he elected to stay on the track.
The top three cars would go three-wide on the restart, then Tays would
fall back, allowing Callahan and Stokes to go at it tooth-and-nail for
the lead. At first, Callahan's left rear did not seem to be an issue,
as the #20 and the #X fired double-wide around the speedway until Stokes
finally secured the lead outright. Tays then took up the battle with Callahan
on the last lap, and entering turn 3 Callahan's left rear exploded and
he wound up perched on the rim of the track watching Stokes fly to victory
in his JB Allen-powered, American Racer-shod Rocket Mustang. Tays followed
to grab second, and Danny Hayes, "The Mississippi Gentleman"
Joe Dee Hollis, and "The Hamburglar" Alan Jaynes rounded out
the top five.
"Flyin" Brian Rickman continued his hot streak in the Open-Wheel
Modified division by grabbing the lead from the pole and soaring around
the rim of the speedway in his customary fashion while the battle raged
behind him. "Knight Rider" Shay Knight would fall into second
place, with Jeremy Shaw and Tony Gray running door-to-door in a battle
for third on his heels. An early caution would sort the cars back out,
and the wild action continued until "Mr. Untouchable" Jason
Hollis hit the turn 2 wall, gathered his car and rode down the backstretch,
and then flipped wildly over "The Zone" in turn three.
Shaw would try to challenge Rickman on the restart to no avail, and the
action heated behind the two as Knight battled Gray and "The Wanted
Man" Lee Ray battled David Honeycutt. Two more cautions would interrupt
the race but the action remained the same, Shaw chasing Rickman as the
drivers behind the jockeyed for position all over the speedway. Rickman
sailed on to victory followed by Shaw, Knight, Ray, and Honeycutt in the
top five.
After winning an early battle with Mike Langford for the top spot, "BashMasters
Classic" winner Wesley Green took the lead and command of the Pro
Street feature event. Mike Shaw moved up from the back to battle with
Langford, Andrew Forstner, and Randol Harlow as the white #Ninety-5 ran
alone out front. Forstner would fall out of the battle after an altercation
with the turn 2 wall, and Shaw would then fight Langford for 2nd place.
Green's hopes of winning went up in flames when his engine let go in
a mighty blaze near the end of the race. Randol Harlow would capitalize
on the regrouping after caution to move around Shaw and grab the lead,
then race on to victory while Shaw fell victim of a flat left rear tire.
Billy Cook, Tommy Gore, Shaw, and Langford completed the top five.
"Big Money" David Honeycutt led the Street Stock feature early
on, with Jeremy Glasgow making an early challenge only to be challenged
himself by T.K. King. After swapping places with Glasgow, King would go
after Honeycutt and with King pulling to the outside the two would go
side-by-side for a series of laps until King was able to go up and around
Honeycutt and charge on to victory. Glasgow, Chad Nickoles and David McGary
completed the top five.
Mickey McAlpin survived a three-wide early battle with Austin Broadway
and Buddy Glover to take the lead and hold on tightly as the battle continued
on his rear bumper. Scott Gable moved around Broadway to duke it out with
Glover and eventually take second, and Mike Minor crept into the picture
and would find himself soon going to work on Gable as they raced right
behind McAlpin. McAlpin held on for the win, with Gable, Minor, Glover,
and Jeff Berkey finishing in the top five.
Jeremy Glasgow and Buddy Glover started on the pole, took the lead, and
remained there for the rest of the Two-Person Cruiser event. Brent Burns
and Jimmy Brasfield fought their way up to a second-place finish, followed
by Benji Jones and Curt Smith.
Coming this Saturday night September 6th is Fan Appreciation
Night 2003. The big show will include the fan favorite “Topless
Twin 20’s” featuring two $1,000 to win 20-lap main events
for the Super Late Models with well over $2,000 possible to win in posted
awards. There will also be bicycle races and free popcorn for the kids.
All the stellar Weekly Racing Series local divisions will be in action
in the Full House Show and admission will remain at only $10 for the special
event.

Boland Blows Em’ Away at Columbus Speedway!
COLUMBUS, MS- Drivers and fans all over the Twin State area have been
looking forward to the James Nickoles Memorial at Columbus Speedway ever
since a $1,000 bounty was placed on the head of "The Kosciusko Kamikaze"
Anthony Rushing. The Columbus track record holder and big-race dominator
had been a marked man all week, and 38 bounty hunting Mississippi State
Championship Challenge Super Late Models rolled into town gunning for
the wildly popular black #70 1/2. A packed house in the grandstands and
142 total cars in the pits showed not only that the Super Late Model drivers
were itching for a shot at Rushing, but that fans and drivers alike wanted
to see who could knock off the man who has officially been the "fastest
man at Columbus" for the past few years.
Columbus Speedway fans have become accustomed to Pole Qualifying being
much like a thrill show and this night would be no different with cars
riding the walls, tempting the zone, and all out testosterone driven bonsai
runs against the clock. The crowd would not be disappointed as they stood
and watched the “Kosciusko Kamikaze” lay down his prototypical
assault on the Columbus Speedway high banks and they got what they came
to see. Rushing quickly served notice that it was not going to be an easy
night for the competition when he shattered his own official track record
set just weeks ago, blasting around the high banks with an amazing 13.47-second
lap that resulted in a huge roar from the stands. The final part of the
script was written as 7-time Mississippi State Champ Mike Boland of Cuba,
Alabama joined Rushing on the front row with his own impressive 13.88,
and "The Ragin' Rebel" David Breazeale found his "mojo"
once again at Columbus, timing in with a 13.94 as the first of only three
drivers to break the 14-second barrier. After two B-Mains to complete
the 22-car MSCC field, the stage was finally set. It was Showtime.
More important business took precedent before the feature event, as drivers
passed their helmets around the grandstands to collect money for 11-year-old
Danielle Nolan, suffering from Cystic Fibrosis and scheduled to undergo
a double lung transplant. $2737 was taken up on the grandstand side alone
(not counting pitside donations), and several drivers, including Mike
Boland and MSCC points leader Scott Slay, pledged to donate a portion
of their winnings to help this worthy cause.
Boland stated in pre-race ceremonies that it would be a drag race to
turn one, and as it turned out, he would be the one to win that drag race
when the green flag fell. He was forced to make a repeat performance after
a huge first-lap mishap led to a restart, with contender "the Pontotoc
Pirate" Steve Russell forced to leave the race. Boland took the lead
again, with Rushing falling in behind after trying to pass low, while
Breazeale and Jason Cliburn went door-to-door for 3rd ahead of a wild,
4-wide pack of cars and “it was on” as wholesale passing and
multi groove racing would ensue for the duration of the high intensity
“Battle Royale.”
Rushing would try another low move to no avail on Boland after a lap
2 caution claimed Mark Sartain, and then Rushing would scratch and claw
to keep up with the warp-speed pace of Boland sparking off of the wall
in the process as the field mixed up in a crazed, jumbled mess of racing
machines behind them. Another caution on lap 5 brought the field to a
crawl as Robert Utz went "over the zone" in turn 4. Boland continued
to lead on the restart, while Cliburn and Breazeale dueled wildly and
"Lugnut" Rodney Wing began to creep into the picture on his
first of several marches to the front. Boland and Rushing appeared to
be quickly moving away from the rest of the field when another caution
fell on lap 12 for Anthony Burroughs' crippled #121 machine.
Cliburn, Breazeale, and 11th-starting Darrin Dorsey went 3-wide for third
place when action resumed, as Rushing continued chasing Boland around
the extreme rim of the track out front. Wing moved into the picture, going
around Dorsey for 6th as Breazeale went toe-to-toe with Cliburn until
a lap 16 caution. Wing would run to the pits with a flat left rear, and
return to the rear of the pack. Breazeale would snatch third place from
Cliburn shortly after the restart, and David Earl Gentry put his #56 on
the hub and began making his way around cars and into the wild action
near the front as the chase continued for the lead far ahead of the pack.
Lap 21 brought another caution, and Breazeale showed his speed by running
off with Boland and Rushing on the restart, challenging Rushing for 2nd
place at times. Gentry continued passing cars on the bottom, moving into
5th place and going to work on Dorsey, while "Mr. Spectacular"
Scott Dedwylder, Cliburn, and "Fast" Eddie Rickman fanned out
in a three-wide battle behind them. Wing, who wasted no time blasting
his way back through the field, soon joined the three-way melee, but the
unbelievable action was cut short at the halfway point when Rushing, still
wildly chasing Boland, hit the turn 4 exit wall, got up on two wheels
momentarily, and rode down the front stretch wall, coming to a rest in
turn 1. Rushing's night was over, as were Boland's (and all other drivers,
for that matter) chances of taking home an extra $1,000 bounty.
Boland flew ahead on the restart, and Darrin Dorsey went around Breazeale
for second, with Gentry following suit and grabbing 3rd place. Breazeale,
reeling, would quickly rebound and jump back in the action-packed race
for 2nd place, while Wing and Cliburn went side-by-side in their own battle
behind the trio. Gentry and Dorsey got a bit physical, and Gentry would
grab the second spot on lap 30 after having to come up from the rear after
an early race caution as Wing, who had charged from the back as well,
moved back into 5th place. Breazeale darted around Dorsey to regain 3rd
and chase Gentry, and Wing pulled inside Dorsey for what would be a drawn-out
series of side-by-side laps in a battle for 4th, eventually won by Wing.
Meanwhile Boland, all alone out front, was moving into lapped traffic
far ahead of the competition.
Breazeale caught Gentry and the two went to war again, with Wing closing
in on the double-wide duo. Wing would soon be right there and vying for
the runner-up spot as the trio went three-wide around the high banks for
a series of laps. The madness was interrupted when Robbie Starnes met
the turn 2 exit wall, bringing out a lap 42 caution.
Breazeale tried to make a move on Boland at the restart, but Boland casually
shrugged off Breazeale and fired around the turns 3 and 4 rim down the
front stretch. Gentry moved up to challenge Breazeale, still on the bottom
and clawing for Boland, and the two made contact, with Breazeale winding
up in the turn 1 wall and out of the once again caution-halted race. Wing
would go after Gentry on restart, but Dorsey would make contact with Wing's
inside quarter with Wing ending up stopped on the track, bringing out
a caution and forced to make another trip to the pits and to the rear
of the field.
Boland tossed aside Gentry's effort to take the lead on the restart just
as he had thrown off every challenge of the night to that point but Wing,
on a mission, passed 4 cars in one lap and began to tear his way back
to the front yet again. Cars could be seen going 5-wide in wild form in
turn 4 as drivers jockeyed for position with the race coming to a close,
and Dorsey would soon go inside Gentry, the two running side-by-side for
a few laps until Dorsey took 2nd away on lap 46 as Cliburn and "The
Prowler" Shawn Edwards dueled behind them in the same fashion. Dedwylder
pulled up to join the battle for 4th, and to the delight of the fans,
Wing, pawing the ground, joined the battle after a third mad dash back
into contention. Cliburn would take the high side of the track; Wing would
go to the hub, other drivers from top to bottom. Edwards, Wing, Cliburn,
and Dedwylder battled each other in what resembled a barroom brawl as
the lap counter ticked quickly down, while Boland continued to flat-foot
his way around the rim in the famed #222 unchallenged.
Boland would take his Lester’s Body Shop/Ware Construction sponsored
Brown Engineering-powered, American Racer-shod GRT Grand Prix to the checkers
and earn the $3,000 winner's share (of note, Boland's pledged 10% of his
winnings to support Danielle Nolan), with Gentry in his Brown powered
Warrior racecar finding his way back around third finishing Dorsey at
the very end to claim second place. Cliburn and Shawn Edwards somehow
scratched by in an incredible 4-car drag race to the finish line to complete
the top five. Dedwylder, Wing, Rickman, Dennis Duncan, and Columbus points
leader "The WeirWolf" Tombo Callahan finished out the top ten.
Wing earned the $100 Muffler Magic Hard Charger award for starting 19th,
and going to the pits twice, and still coming home 7th.

Greg Wilhite took the initial lead over a fine 27-car field in the attrition-filled
Open-wheel Modified feature event, with Tony Gray and Brian Rickman dueling
behind him after Rickman dissipated tough-running Jeremy Shaw. Rickman,
driving like a madman wherever his car would take him, would fight his
way around Gray and capture the lead on lap 3, never giving the spot back
up. Three- and four-wide action throughout the pack translated into a
few hairy situations, and the action behind Rickman heated up as well
as Gray, "The Wanted Man" Lee Ray, "Midnight Rider"
Matt Price, and "Mr. Untouchable" Jason Hollis fought for position.
Hollis would fall back and David Eaton would move into the fight on the
hub as the race came to a close. Rickman took the win, with Wilhite, Gray,
Ray, and Price completing the top five.
Newcomer Billy Cook and Mike Shaw dueled early in the Pro Street feature
for the lead, with Shaw capturing the spot after a lap 6 caution sorted
the field out. Mike Langford, forced to go to the rear at one point, moved
back through the field and challenged Cook for second at the end as Shaw
went on to victory. Cook held on to the runner-up spot over Langford,
and Steven Putney led Brad May to the line to complete the top five.
Terry Kelley led the Street Stock "Late Night Club" around
the track early on as T.K. King and Scott Stripling battled behind the
#00 as a huge field of 31 Street Stock pilots were on hand to wage war.
A wild flip on the backstretch by Eddie Boykin halted the action, and
Chad Nickoles moved into the battle only to wind up in another spread
of destruction on the backstretch later in the race. Jason Hollis would
then go after and around Kelley and lead the race until "Big Money"
David Honeycutt drove around and to victory with only a lap and a half
left to race. Hollis, Marvin Beard, Kelley, and Jeremy Glasgow earned
top-five honors.
Mickey McAlpin had the Mini Stock feature well under control early as
Mike Minor moved up through the field, battling by Greg Glover, Tommy
Dove, and Buddy Glover by lap 5. Dove and Glover battled door-to-door
until lap 6 caution, and McAlpin pulled to the infield before the restart,
leaving Minor out front. Minor would go on to grab the win over Buddy
Glover, Robert Sanders, Dove, and Scott Gable.
Tommy Barton and Lee Ray teamed up to lead every lap of Two-Person Cruiser
competition and take the win. The #69 car driven by Jeremy Robertson took
home second with a late race pass over the big ultra large cubic inch
Cadillac of the Joe Fondren team. The Glasgow and Glover team was fourth
with the Shelton family duo rounding out the top five.

The “WeirWolf” Howls at Columbus Speedway!
Green and Sheltons Take Championship Honors!
COLUMBUS, MS- A strong late season field of 116 race cars filled the
Columbus Speedway pit area and a fine cheering section of fans filed in
Saturday night to witness the "BASHMasters Classic", featuring
Summer Championship races for Pro Street and Two-Person Cruisers as well
as Weekly racing Series events for the Super Late Models, Open-Wheel Modifieds,
and other local division action. A wild and crazy night of racing action
was in store as the drivers put on a show on the high-banked speedplant
in all divisions while having all activities in a timely manner.
Mike Shaw's 16.07 would be the fast time of the night in Pro Street qualifying,
but a "4" pill draw inversion would put Tommy Gore on the pole
for the $500-to-win, 20-lap feature event. Wesley Green took the lead
from the outside front row at the drop of the green flag, with Mike Langford
diving beneath Gore in a challenge for second place that lasted until
lap 4, both drivers going door-to-door all the way around the track until
the position was finally claimed. The 25 of Paul Robinson moved up to
4th on lap 5 and would then challenge Shaw for the 3rd spot.
Gore would catch Green by lap 6, as the leader's #Ninety-5 machine came
up on lapped traffic, but Langford would soon move back in on the #44
and the two would race side-by-side once again, while Shaw went after
Robinson behind them. Gore dispatched Langford and drove under Green in
turn 3, and the two blasted around the turn and down the front stretch
stride-for-stride until Green dove down to cut off Gore entering the first
turn.
After cautions on lap 14 and 15, Langford again battled Gore for the
runner-up spot as Green cruised to victory. Gore held on ahead of Langford,
with Chase Christian and Robinson rounding out the top five.
Two-Person Cruiser action was unconventional and downright crazy, with
the car both qualifying and racing clockwise (versus the normal counterclockwise
direction) in the $300-to-win special event. Tommy Barton and Phillip
Glasgow's lap of 20.10 set the pace, but drawing a "4" pill
meant that Wayne Sudduth and Shane Glasgow would sit up front beside Tony
Shelton and Tony Shelton, Jr.
Shelton and son took off in their Mopar machine at the start, with Sudduth/Glasgow
and Barton/Glasgow falling in line. Benji Jones and Curt Smith challenged
Jeremy Glasgow and Buddy Glover for fourth, until Glasgow/Glover decided
to go after the #24 for 3rd and Jeremy Robertson and Alan Hall moved in
to battle the #K6 for fifth place.
The wild action continued as the leaders quickly found lapped traffic,
and Glasgow/Glover capitalized by grabbing the top spot from Shelton and
son. Their stand was short lived, and the Sheltons took over once again,
only to be boxed in by lapped cars again. This time the #38 survived,
and it was the #24 Torino that was caught in traffic as the white flag
waved. The Shelton duo took the checkers ahead of Glasgow/Glover, Robertson/Hall,
Barton/Glasgow, and Sean Lytle/Mike Harris.
For the second consecutive week, "Marvelous" Mark Stokes out
timed the 23-car Super Late Model field in MidsouthRacing.com pole qualifying,
this week blasting around the rim to the tune of a 14.15-second lap. Stokes
would draw the lucky "0" pill, putting his #X machine on the
pole inside of Weekly Racing Series points leader "The WeirWolf"
Tombo Callahan.
Callahan took the high road on the start, with Stokes going to the inside
in turns 1 and 2 as "The Prowler" Shawn Edwards moved in under
"Fast" Eddie Rickman as the cars took the back straightaway.
Edwards would then dive-bomb both Stokes and Callahan, leading the field
at the exit of turn four, as Callahan, Stokes, and Rickman went three-wide
for second place. Callahan then recaptured the lead from Edwards and the
two dueled once again, with Stokes and Rickman going door-to-door behind
them. Stokes would claim third place outright when Rickman left the track
with apparent mechanical problems.
Danny Christian, who started 7th on the grid, began to make his presence
known up front by going under and around Ronny Lee Hollingsworth and taking
fourth place, then running down Stokes in traffic. Christian took third
place on the back stretch as the leaders all raced in tight formation
navigating lapped cars, and soon both black #5 machines of Edwards and
Christian were dog fighting for position behind the leading #20 car. Christian
was unable to find his way around Edwards, and Stokes would move back
in to challenge for third once again as Edwards tried to run down Callahan.
Edwards finally caught the #20 in traffic and would go to the inside,
but any attempt at taking the lead Edwards may have made was cut short
by the race's only caution as Robbie Harvey nosed into the turn four/frontstretch
wall.
Callahan of Weir, in his Brown-powered, Hoosier-shod GRT, would win the
ensuing two-lap dash to victory ahead of Edwards, and Stokes and Christian
went side-by-side both laps with Christian holding on by mere inches to
keep third place at the line. Anthony Burroughs would complete the top
five. Callahan's victory helped his cause as he continues to lead in the
Weekly Racing Series point standings, but Edwards' second place finish
keeps the 2001 Track Champ in the hunt and solidly in second place overall.
The local Super Late Model drivers seem to be in fine form awaiting the
upcoming $3,000 to win, 50 lap main event for the Mississippi State Championship
Challenge Super Late Models as the headliner in the 4th Annual James Nickoles
Memorial Saturday night August 23rd.
"Flyin" Brian Rickman came out of a three-wide drive through
turns 1 and 2 to take the early lead in Open-Wheel Modified action and
would never look back as he soared around the rim. Tony Gray made early
attempts to unseat Rickman using the hub of the speedway, but would fall
short, and soon the #90 was out front and firmly in charge as the battle
raged behind him. Jeremy Shaw and Bryan Brock dueled side by side behind
them, with Lee Ray poking his nose in using the middle line at times.
Jason Hollis wasted little time moving into position, going under and
around Brock and then setting up a drawn-out battle with Ray that lasted
until the #5 took third place away on lap 10. By then, Shaw's engine had
"gone out with a bang" and Rickman was far ahead of the field.
Hollis moved around Gray on the low side on lap 12, with Shay Knight quickly
going to war for the second position with the #5. Gray would reclaim third
as Knight fell back into a battle with Ray for fourth, but Rickman sailed
on to take the checkered flag far ahead of the pack. Hollis, Gray, Ray,
and Knight all came home in the top five.
"Big Money" David Honeycutt and Chad Nickoles put on a show
up front at the beginning of the caution-free Street Stock feature, going
door-to-door for a series of laps without breaking stride as is their
custom. The two separated from the rest of the field as T.K. King moved
low and fought his way into a battle with Marvin Beard for third. Honeycutt
would take command of the top spot and cruise on to win over Nickoles,
while the King/Beard battle continued with King coming home third over
the #22. Scott Stripling completed the top five.
Mike Minor took the lead at the start of the Mini Stock feature, with
Scott Gable holding second place as Mickey McAlpin moved around Robert
Sanders for third. Gable's engine gave up on lap 4, and soon McAlpin had
crept up on Minor and was challenging for the lead. After running 3/4
of the way around the track side by side, McAlpin took the lead out of
lap two and ran ahead to take the win. Minor, Sanders, Tommy Dove, and
Stanley Busbin gained top-five honors.
Coming this Saturday night August 23rd is the 4th Annual James Nickoles
Memorial highlighted by the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Super
Late Models vying for a $3,000 to win top prize in their 50 lap main event
plus a $1,000 bounty on “The Kosciusko Kamikaze” Anthony Rushing
making it a $4,000 possible to win event. All local divisions will be
in action as well as a full house is expected to be on hand for the “top
shelf” event.
Event information for this Saturday night August 23rd has grandstand
gates opening at 5pm with action at 8:00pm. Adult grandstand admission
is only $15 with children ages 10 and under admitted free. Pit gates open
at 3pm. Further information can be obtained by calling Johnny Stokes at

West Takes “Summer Slam 2003” Honors at Columbus Speedway!
COLUMBUS, MS- Columbus Speedway drivers and fans came out more than ready
for action Saturday night after a two week hiatus from racing for the
running of the much-anticipated "Summer Slam 2003" $1000-to-win
Street Stock event along with Super Late Models, Open-Wheel Modifieds,
and all other local divisions. A strong field of 134 race cars including
41 "Hardcore Heavy Metal" Street Stocks filled the pits ready
to be turned loose on the high banks. Fans would be treated to a wild
and crazy evening of dirt track racing that would make up for two weeks
without local action.
Street Stock Summer Slam action began with midsouthracing.com Pole Qualifying
as T.K. King bested the field and would start the feature on the second
row after drawing a "4" inversion pill, putting Scott Stripling
and Terry Mosley on the front row. Mosley took the lead on the first lap,
with Stripling looking inside as "Big Money" David Honeycutt
crept into the picture, soon grabbing second place after the leaders went
3-wide on turn four. Stripling began to fade into the field, being overtaken
by King and then "Mr. Untouchable" Jason Hollis, and the top
five began to spread out a bit until caution fell on lap 6 as Stripling
limped off the track.
Honeycutt began looking inside Mosley after the restart, with King often
catching the leaders and attempting his patented slide jobs to no avail.
On lap 15, mayhem unfolded as the leaders were caught up in heavy lapped
traffic, and after Mosley and Hollis both found themselves parked at the
bottom of turn 3, King's personal plague of late struck again and he would
lose yet another wheel, and David Honeycutt was also forced to retire.
The top four cars were out of the race, Richard West would take over the
top spot.
West held on to the lead as Marvin Beard and Jeremy Glasgow battled behind
him as would go on to take the big $1,000 check home for the Columbus
racer. Glasgow took second ahead of Beard, while Lee Ray and Chip Chism
battled their way around to the line to finish 4th and 5th, respectively.
Danny Gable, Kyle Rutledge, Johnny Smith, Craig Barham, and Phillip Glasgow
would collect top-ten honors.
"Marvelous" Mark Stokes made a statement in MidsouthRacing.com
Super Late Model pole qualifying, topping the field with 14.34 blast around
the Speedway. A "4" inversion by pill draw would place Columbus
winner's circle regulars "The Pontotoc Pirate" Steve Russell
and "Ravishing" Rick Rickman on the front row for the feature
event.
After nearly a fell lap under green with no clear leader, Rickman was
able to beat Russell off of turn 4 to take charge of the field, as Stokes
and "Fast" Eddie Rickman followed. On lap 5, Stokes and the
elder Rickman would both pile into the parked/stuck machine of Late Model
first-timer Chris McElhenney, ended both drivers' nights and leaving Stokes'
car engulfed in flames. McElhenney was somehow able to continue with heavy
sheet metal damage, and the race restarted with Rick Rickman once again
in the lead, followed very closely by Russell, both drivers soaring around
the rim while "The WeirWolf" Tombo Callahan worked the inside
of Shawn Edwards in the battle for 3rd.
Josh Fuller, working the hub of the track from his eighth starting spot,
began to make strides, moving into 5th around Callahan on lap 11 while
Robbie Harvey, also making use of the bottom groove, fought to work his
way into position. It was at this time, with the leaders in heavy traffic,
that Rickman was caught in a bind in turns 3/4 and Russell took advantage,
rocketing into the lead and rolling away from the white #68.
As Rickman began to reel the #72 back in, Fuller would take 4th place
briefly from Clint Hardin, but Hardin, a relative newcomer to Columbus
who seems to make new strides each week, wasted little time fighting his
way back around Fuller and reclaiming the position. Rickman would be in
close quarters with Russell after a caution on lap 18 and would begin
to look inside, but Russell continued around the speedway smoothly and
consistently, holding on to the lead while Fuller and Hardin continued
to swap spots for brief periods.
Rickman's last two challenges for the lead came on lap 22, when he and
Russell would blast side-by-side through turns 3 and 4, and on lap 25,
when the #68 would once again move inside the #72 and come up short. Russell
would then pull away and ride to the checkers, followed by Rickman, Edwards,
Hardin, and Fuller. Russell, driving his Spec-powered machine, would be
awarded a $100 bonus by Robert Brown for winning with a Brown Engineering
power-plant. Callahan, Harvey, Mark Dodson, Tim Couch, and Alan Jaynes
would round out the top ten.
Jeremy Shaw would rocket into the lead from the pole in Open-Wheel Modified
action, followed by a heavily smoking Randy Mayfield. "The Deerslayer"
Chris Glenn would move inside Jason Williams in the battle for third before
caution fell on lap 2. Action resumed with Shaw once again alone and in
charge out front.
"Midnight Rider" Matt Price would soon move into position in
the crowded field of cars up front and go under Mayfield looking for second
place, while Glenn tried to grab 4th from Shaw Knight as David Eaton waited
in the wings. Mayfield retired shortly after a lap 4 caution. As the action
resumed, Shaw remained the leader as Knight held off Glenn and went after
Price, and Eaton would move in to challenge the #66 while Tony Gray soared
around the top side above them looking for a position to take away.
Shaw ran away from Price, and soon all of the top five would separate
from each other. Eaton would close in on Glenn and move to the inside
as the laps wound down, bit it was Shaw enduring and taking an impressive
win. Price, Knight, Glenn, and Eaton rounded out the top five spots.
In Pro Street action, Mike Langford started from the pole and grab the
early lead. Bobby Nickoles would mount a late charge and go inside of
Langford looking to take over the lead, while Mike Shaw and Thomas McReynolds
went head-to-head behind them, often running door-to-door for laps at
a time. Langford would hold off Nickoles to take the win, with Shaw, McReynolds,
and Chase Christian finishing in the top five.
Buddy Glover claimed the initial lead in Mini Stock action over his brother
Greg, with Scott Gable and Mike Minor battling behind the duo up front.
Gable slowed and fell out of contention after a few laps, and Greg Glover
would soon be battling side-by-side with his brother for the top spot
while Mike Minor moved in. Minor would grab second place and go after
the #48, but misfortune struck when the two leaders were hung together
at the bumpers entering turn 3, allowing Greg Glover to slip by and into
the lead before they managed to separate.
Though Buddy Glover was all over the bumper of the #8 Pinto until the
checkers fell, Greg Glover held on relentlessly for the win. Buddy Glover,
Minor, Robert Sanders, and Mickey McAlpin filled out the top five positions.
Brent Burns and Ashley Herron led in the initial stages of "Chaotic
Cruiser" feature action, but the powerful duo of Jeremy Glasgow and
Buddy Glover worked their way into the position and went on to win the
demolition-derby-with-laps style event. Jeremy Robertson and Allen Hall
filled out the podium, coming in third.
Coming this Saturday night August 16th will be a big night of racing
as the 3rd Annual BASHMasters Classic will be held with a Summer Championships
for the Heavy Metal Pro Street division and the wild 2-Person Cruiser
class plus a Super Late Model competing in a 30-lap main event plus all
the exciting local divisions in action.
A quick look at the future has the 4th Annual James Nickoles Memorial
for the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Super Late Models coming
on August 23rd. The 50-lap Championship event will pay $3,000 to win along
with the announcement that a $1,000 bounty has been placed on the “Kosciusko
Kamikaze” Anthony Rushing making it a $4,000 possible to win event.
Rushing has won the last two special events at Columbus as well as setting
a new track record in July, not to mention being the defending James Nickoles

Dates Set for $20,003 to Win
14th Annual Magnolia State 100 at Columbus Speedway
COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI-The dates and purse have been announced for the
14th Annual Magnolia State 100 to be held at the high banked 3/10’s
mile Columbus Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi on October 3rd and 4th.
The event name will remain the same due to the name association of the
annual event but the Super Late Model main event will once again be 60
laps paying a handsome $20,003 top prize for the attractive win and title.
Saturday night October 4th will see B-Mains and the 60-lap Super Late
Model Main Event unfold at one of the South’s most prestigious and
prominent racing spectacles. The 60-lap event will also allow for the
various engine combinations prevalent in the region such as the SUPR/SAS
Spec engines to be used in a competitive fashion and allow the preferred
use of alcohol for fuel, and also keeping the continuity and drama of
the race intact by not having a fuel stop.
The premier racing happening of the year in Mississippi has seen tremendous
success at its new home at Columbus Speedway. The event has drawn a very
large field Super Late Models at each of the last two races since moving
to Columbus Speedway including a standing room only, overflow, and record
crowd at last year’s race which saw Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas
claim his seventh Magnolia State 100 title out of the thirteen years the
event has been run. Event promoter Dewitt Singleton of Meridian, Mississippi
is once again expecting strong support from the state of Mississippi and
the regional racers along with a packed grandstand to be on hand for the
fourteenth version of what many consider to be one of the biggest races
in the South at one of the most exciting short tracks in America.
Magnolia State action gets underway on Thursday October 2nd with an optional
practice session that will be held from 7pm until 10pm. Competition begins
on Friday night October 3rd with Super Late Model Pole Qualifying and
Super Late Model Qualifying races to determine the majority of the starting
grid for the 24-car starting field. Columbus Speedway local divisions
will also be in action with Qualifying Races as well for their first night
in competing for Magnolia State Championship purses, titles, and trophies.
The final act of the major event on Saturday night October 4th will consist
of an expected three Super Late Model B-Mains to complete the 24-car starting
field plus local division B-Mains as needed. The evening will be culminated
with Magnolia State Championship races in all divisions, highlighted by
the 60-lap and $20,003 to win Magnolia State assault on the Columbus Speedway
high banks for the Super Late Models.
Additional Magnolia State information is available by calling Dewitt
Singleton at 601-917-1500 days or 601-635-4300 in the evenings. Johnny

Rushing Stands Ground at Columbus Speedway!
COLUMBUS, MS-The short history of the John L. Cliett Tribute at Columbus
Speedway, has seen only two drivers visit Victory Lane. "The Kosciusko
Kamikaze" Anthony Rushing swept the first two events, with Mike Boland
taking the win in the 2002 installment. It was only fitting that the two
past champions would find themselves sitting together on the front row
in front of the packed grandstands for the fourth running of the prestigious
59-lap, $5000-to-win Super Late Model event honoring one of the most beloved
and colorful figures in dirt racing history.
Rushing, the customary pacesetter in Columbus qualifying, put his machine
on top of the field early in qualifying with a 14.23 lap during Midsouthracing.com
Pole Qualifying and would remain atop the leader-board until Boland sped
around the rim with an impressive 14.17 run to take the pole position
over the potent 33-car field for the feature race as well as the $159
Fast Time Award presented by Fortitude Logistics/Behind the Wheel. The
top 12 qualifiers were locked into the main event with two B-mains filling
out the 24-car field, won by David Earl Gentry and "The Southern
Gentleman" Freddy Smith.
After a "missing man" pace lap to honor "The One and Only"
John L. Cliett, Rushing would blast into the lead using the high groove
at the green flag with Boland taking second place ahead of "The Ragin'
Rebel" David Breazeale. Drivers would fan out all across the high
banks, with Steve Russell and Byron Michael both taking their machines
to the hub and heading for the leaders. While Russell would move up to
the rim, Michael would continue running the extreme lower groove to move
under Greg Skinner, also running close to the bottom. Duke Whiseant, Ronny
Lee Hollingsworth, and Eddie Rickman were the main attraction in the early
laps though, as the three would go three-wide around the track for a handful
of laps battling for the 4th spot until Breazeale's machine gave up and
caution flew on lap 9.
Boland dove to the hub in turn three on the restart and would stay inside
high-flying Rushing for three laps as Michael began to make his presence
known before Ronny Hollingsworth brought out a second caution after going
nose-first into the turn 1 wall. Boland would again go low on Rushing
on the restart, but this time the many-time Mississippi State champ had
company on the hub as Michaels was there to challenge the |
