Duck River Speedway & Winchester Speedway
"Big 10 Steel Head Super Series"
Tim Smith and Jim Hastings of Duck River Speedway along with Tim
Smith (Huntland, TN.) of Winchester Speedway have agreed to join forces
and expand Duck River Speedway's very successful 2002 Big 6 Steel Head
series in the upcoming 2003 racing season.
During the 2002 Big 6 series drivers from five states competed with
Florence, Alabama's "Flyin' Byron" Michael taking the series
championship
and walking away with the lion's share of the $5,500 points fund (which
exceeded the $5,000 points fund goal). Series race winners were Michael,
series runner-up Les Howell of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Tony "The
Tiger"
Morris of Murfreesboro, Jimmy Nowlin of Shelbyville and two time victor
David Gentry of Lewisburg. The 2002 Big 6 races all paid $1,500 to win
and
$60 to start. The Points fund was distributed to the Top 10 finishers
in
the title chase.
Duck River Speedway and Winchester Speedway owners have been busy
working out an agreement to expand the Big 6 series into a 10 event series
in 2003 with five shows each at Duck River Speedway and Winchester
Speedway. The Points fund goal is $10,000 instead of $5,000 (the series
will start with a $5,000 points fund and will be increased for every race
entry during all ten events with the goal being $10,000 minimum based
on
an average car count of 25 racers per show) in 2003. The 2003 Big 10 Super
Series point fund will be split among the Top 15 racers instead of just
the Top 10. Also the 2003 Big 10 series will have increased purses in
the
$1,500 to win shows (a $490 increase with a minimum of $100 to start /
increase is in positions 9, 11 and 13 through 24)). There will be six
of
these shows (3 at each track) and there will also be four $3,000 to win
and $300 to start Big 10 shows!
The 2003 Big 10 Steel Head Super series will utilize the same rules
as the 2002 Big 6 series with two exceptions. A $250 Protest on MSD
ignition boxes has been added and any driver in the Top 5 in points may
protest (last season only Top 5 race finishers could protest the race
winner). Basic rules are 362 Steel Head, flat top piston engines with
any
intake manifold. Rear tires must durometer 60 or greater when cold. Rules
may be viewed at DRS web site (www.duckriverspeedway.com) or you may
e-mail raceconnect@united.net or bowlingj@tnns.net / dcbowling@tva.gov
.
The 2003 Big 10 Super Series Steel Head champion will have an
additional challenge as drivers must master two race tracks in order to
win the Championship.
The 2003 Big 6 racers are expected to return and try to take Byron
Michael's crown, if they can! Top 5 in the 2002 point standings were:
1 Byron Michael / #B17 / Florence, Alabama
2 Les Howell / #91 / Muscle Shoals, Alabama
3 Jerry Jackson / #99 / Sheffield, Alabama
4 John David Todd (Rookie LM Racer!) / #18 / Murfreesboro, Tennessee
5 Billy Harris (2002 DRS Track Champion) / #11 / Flintville, Tennessee
Other Top 10 finishers were: Mark Fields, David Gentry, Corey Posey, Jimmy
Nowlin and Danny Christian (Mississippi)

Clayton Home of Shelbyville 7th Annual "Jamboree"
(Oct. 25 and 26)
Fayettevilles Jeremy Taylor served notice that
he will be a force to reckon with as the youngster set fast time during
Late Model time trials with a blistering 12.991 to lead the 26 late model
racers on hand.
When the starter Dean Pugh unfurled the green flag on
the feature race it was Shelbyville, Tennessees Jay Brinkley who
charged to the point, from his outside pole position. A couple of multi-car
accidents in the early laps claimed Big 6 feature winner Les Howell, two
time track champion David Thompson, Cullman late model ace Daniel Miller
and 2001 2-bbl Late Model champion Josh Lunsford who flipped on the front
stretch. While the these crashes marred the early laps once the race settled
down it was clear that Brinkley was the man to beat. By midway it was
Brinkley comfortably in front of Mark Fields with the second through sixth
place racers in a real battle for position. The last eleven laps of the
feature saw multi track champion (former DRS, Winchester and North Alabama
Speedway Champion) Jerry Owens finally get "hooked up". The
Muscle Shoals star had fallen to twelfth spot in the early laps with what
appeared to be a very ill handling racer but just as Owens struggled early
on, the last half was a masterful exhibition of a veteran figuring out
his car and adapting to the track as Jerry charged up through the field
to get by six racers by lap 24 when fourth running Jerry Ashley went up
in smoke. The former Winchester champion was through for the night and
the restart saw Owens drive around Dwayne Oakley and former Big 6 feature
winner Tony Morris to take third then just come up short in his last ditch
effort to take second from young Mark Fields. Following Brinkley, Fields
and Owens across the line was Morris, Oakley, first time visitor Perry
Delaney who seemed to get stronger with each passing lap and Mopar driving
stalwart Jeff Sanborn. Ronnie Caldwell was eighth with sixteen year old
Nick Howell finishing a remarkable ninth in front of Randall Cagle.

The Brad Seals Memorial Open Wheel Championship was a
veritable Whos Who in mid-state modifieds and while Columbias
Randy Zeigler led most of the first twenty five laps the former champion
brought out the caution flag with five laps to go. Defending DRS Late
Model champion Shannon Davis then led the final five laps holding back
Barry Rochelle, Mr. Mountain Dew Sam Range was third, with Moulton Alabama
star Chad Winkles and "Flyin Bryan" Reed in fourth and
fifth. On Track altercations took its toll on Linden, Tennessees
Eric Hickerson, Junior Daniels, Eloras Jeff Tate, Henry Hanger,
2002 Open Wheel champ John Schetrompf and 2002 Late Model champ Billy
Harris and Mark Haddon. The latter two took their battle outside the race
cars and gave the fans a DRS "Tough Man" competition when they
had to be separated by several track officials! Multi time Winchester
OW ace Alan Holmes flipped during the Open Wheel last chance race that
was won by newly crowned champion John Schetrompf.

Our most recent 2-barrell feature winner Scott Cook parlayed
his quick time from Friday night into an impressive $1,000 to win drive
on his way to victory number three in 2002. Tim Orrell gave chase the
entire 25 laps but could not reel in Cook. Two barrel Late Model champion
Rick Currin pushed Orrell for the runner-up spot but settled for third
with Dwayne Waid and Greg Curl taking fourth and fifth.

Tash Bruce led the Super Stock main event for 15 laps
Saturday night. That would have been good enough for a victory any Saturday
night of the year, except last night. The season ending, $1,000 to win
Jamboree is a 20 lap feature and Tash got loose on lap 16 allowing 2002
Super Stock Champion to slide by for the win. Fayettevilles Shawn
Mitchell had to transfer into main event via the second last chance race
and while Tash Bruce needed a 15 lap feature Mitchells "Drive
of the night" needed more than 20 laps, as Mitchell passed 18 cars
to grab second spot. Tullahomas Ricky Fuller stalked the leaders
all the way and finally finished in third with Farris Lovette and Brad
Hartley in fourth and fifth. Hartley himself came from the last chance
race in a fine effort to nab a Top 5 finish. Bruce slipped back to a sixth
place finish. Jeff Shields also won one of the two last chance races.

In the Outlaw Pony feature it was Johnny Crowell that
led all but the final 30 yards of the feature event. A five car melee
coming out of turn four all but blocked the track as Crowell headed for
the checkered flag. Johnny went high and while he got through, he had
to proceed slowly and that allowed 2001 Outlaw champion Steve Kennedy
to drop down to the bottom of the track and beat Crowell to the flag.
An official decision was invoked that gave Crowell the win and relegated
the reigning champ to second. Newly crowned 2002 Outlaw Pony champion,
Tom Russell was a very close third. Tom Wilsons best run of the
year netted him fourth ahead of Jason Coggins.

The Pure Pony feature was a Rogers-Chumbly battle most
of the way as early leader Andy Rogers and Michael Chumbley battled neck
and neck the entire distance but it was Anthony Dodson with a high side
move that shot by both leaders to grab the $1,000 win. Chumbly slipped
by Rogers for second as Billy Davidson also got around Rogers on the final

"Clayton Homes of Shelbyville Big 6"
finale
Six time two barrel feature winner and class champion
Rick Currin moved up to the Late Model division for the Big 6 finale and
stunned the stellar Late Model field by setting fast time with a 13.477
clocking that edged Jimmy Nowlins 13.497 clocking. When the green
flag unfurled on the 22 car field (Tommy Davis was scratched) it was Currin
jumping out front and leading the pack for the first two circuits when
the 2-BBL Champ spun and Nowlin assumed the point. The former Big 6 feature
winner led the next 5 laps before his mount shutoff on the front stretch
bringing out the caution and ending the popular veterans run for the roses.
On the lap eight restart it was "Flyin" Byron
Michael at the point and the chase was on. Byron was not only trying to
garner his first Big 6 feature win (although Byron has four feature wins
in 2002 at DRS, the Florence, AL. Native had yet to pick up a Big 6 feature
victory) but was the points leader in the "Clayton Homes of Shelbyville
Big 6" season championship that would be worth nearly $1,400 in points
money. Byron held off his Florence neighbor Dwayne Oakley and young upstart
Mark Fields the remainder of the way. Twenty year old Les Howell was in
desperate pursuit of Byron as the Muscle Shoals charger was second in
points and already had one Big 6 victory. Les came from row four to trail
Michael and Fields at the checkered flag with Oakley finishing fourth.
The drive of the night may belong to Murfreesboros John David Todd
who charged through the field from his seventeenth starting position to
crack the top 5 at the checkered flag by edging the Mopar driving Jeff
Sanborn of Shelbyville. Todds run also elevated the rookie Late
Model racer to an amazing fourth place finish in the Big 6 point standings!
Byron Michael withstood an engine teardown at the conclusion
of the night and took home more than $3,000 for the night($1,500 for the
win, $1,385 for the Big 6 points championship and $300 in tear down money).

Flintvilles Billy Harris trailed Mark Haddon for
nearly three quarters of the Open Wheel feature before Harris slid under
Haddon and as the two made contact and fought for control Harris emerged
the new leader. Billy was pushed the final four circuits by Mark but the
Decherd native could not get back around Harris. With two laps remaining
a viscous crash by Jason Maurer brought the final caution flag out and
before Jasons open wheel could be extricated from the turn one fencing
the rains came and the Open Wheel feature was declared complete. Newly
crowned track champion John Schetrompf made a late race charge that netted
the Bedford County champion a third place finish with Moe Harrison and
Michael Ray taking fourth and fifth. Haddon and Harrison were the heat
race victors.

Shane Hooper won his heat race then survived a mid race
altercation with Pure Pony champion Michael Chumbley before garnering
his third victory of the season. While Hooper was sailing to his third
win and seventeenth Top 5 finish of the year, Jeff Maxwell and Anthony
Seibers were putting on a nip and tuck battle that lasted most of the
feature event. Maxwell and Seibers were back and forth all night before
finishing side by side at the checkered flag with Maxwell nipping Seibers
for the runner-up spot in what was perhaps the best battle of the night.
Jason Todd entered that duel in the final ;laps and at one time made it
three wide but could not find his way around Maxwell and Seibers. Chance
Rogers was fifth. Track champion Michael Chumbley settled for eighth and
also won his heat race, as did Andy Rogers.

In a strange Rookie Pony feature event, Justin Maxwell
appeared on his way to his third win of the season when on the final lap
Maxwell slowed drastically to allow Jeremy the chance to pass. Jeremy
however would not take the bait and appeared to try and push Justin across
the finish line. Third place Jamie Lewis took the opportunity to pass
both leaders and grab the win. It should be noted that a win by Maxwell
would have forced the rookie to move up to the pure pony class (by track
rules) and Justin apparently wanted an opportunity to finish the season
in the Rookie class and run the Rookie Pony feature in this coming Saturday
nights Jamboree. Leslie Harper and Maxwell were the heat race winners.

"Clayton Homes Big 6 Championship" finale
on for Saturday, regardless----
Just a note to inform our competitors, crews and fans
alike on Duck River Speedway's contingency plans for this weekend in case
of , you know what (r---) on Thursday and Friday!
The weather and that four letter word (R---)----! Should Thursday night's
practice be rained out, no problem, practice is scrubbed and we move forward.
Now pay attention, it gets tricky from here on !
Should Friday night's activities of the Jamboree be cancelled, we will
move the entire "Jamboree" to October 24, 25 and 26 and try
again in two weeks! However, should this happen we will still run on Saturday
night, going ahead with the "Clayton Homes of Shelbyville Big 6"

Also note: Should the Jamboree be moved we will have a
regular show with all classes running on October 19th! In any case we
will run a regular show on October 19th!
This information is the latest up to date contingency
plan, per Tim Smith & Jim Hastings.
Keep in Mind: We are racing Saturday night regardless
of what happens on Friday. Big 6 Championship finale on Saturday, October
12th!
Let us all hope the rain stays away on Friday and Saturday
for sure!

on
Saturday's Late Model entry count)
Currently the Top 3 in Point standings are:
1 Byron Michael of Florence, Alabama with 387 Points
2 Les Howell of Muscle Shoals, Alabama with 370 points and

I guess Lynard Skynard said it best, "Sweet Home Alabama" !
The Champions share should exceed $1,350 with the runner-ups share
exceeding $850 and third place worth in the neighborhood of $700. All
three of these racers could win the "Big 6" series Championship
and should
carry home between them, around $3,000, not counting the race purse! Be
there this Saturday night, October 12 when it's all on the line. The race
winner could carry home nearly $3,000 !

only run
on Saturday night.

other vital information.

Duck River (TN) Speedway results from October 5, 2002
Jay Brinkley set quick time with a 13.037 clocking then proceeded to
lead all 25 laps of the feature event to pick up the late model win.
Former two time Winchester Speedway track champion Jerry Ashley
out-dueled front row starter Jimmy Nowlin for the runner-up spot in the
first dozen laps then pushed Brinkley the final circuits before settling
for his best finish of the year at Duck River Speedway. They say youth
will be served and if last night's performance was any indication then
young Jeremy Taylor will serve himself, thank you. Jeremy in a rare
appearance at DRS and having switched engines to make the show qualified
fifth and battled his way to a very strong third place effort pushing
the
leaders to the finish and appearing very fast and smooth around the
historic clay oval. Jimmy Nowlin fought a very loose race car all night
but persevered to finish fourth in front of a couple of other fast
improving youngsters, John David Todd and Larry Landers . Watch out guys
the youth movement appears to be on!

Defending Duck River Late Model champion, Shannon Davis
was the
fastest (14.541 seconds) of 18 qualifiers in the Open Wheel class but
had
to really work to hold off a determined Bryan Reed to garner the win.
The
Open Wheel class runner-up from 2001, Reed has had nothing but misfortune
after misfortune in 2002 but Bryan was all over Davis at the checkered
flag and with last night's run looks as a solid favorite for this coming
weekend's Jamboree and the $1,200 to win Brad Seals Memorial event on
Saturday night. Newly crowned Open Wheel champion John Schetrompf also
was
very quick in his new ride, coming from eight to take third from Barry
Rochelle in the waning laps. Ken McAfee was fifth as Shawn Ross topped
Dexter Roberts in the Open Wheel Dash for Cash.

Last week Tim Orrell topped Scott Cook in the 2-BBL Late

feature but this week it was Cook who returned the favor as Scott
blistered the ¼ mile oval in route to a convincing win. Talking
about
youth, sixteen year old Robert Stutts won the heat race then captured
his
second third place finish in two weeks after pushing early leaders Greg
Curl ands Scott Cook for the front spot.

The Super Stock class at Duck River is always worth the
price of
admission with plenty of fireworks and unexpected twists and turns.
Unfortunately for Jeff Shields the Chevrolet Monte Carlo chauffeur has
been providing a little too much of the drama of late. From last lap
altercations with eventual winners to last night's heartbreaker. Jeff
won
his heat race then led all but the final eighth of a mile. After
withstanding everything that Chris Ruth, Tyler and Jason Landers and last
week's winner Bobby Bradford could throw at him, alas poor Jeff could
not
defeat gravity. Atmospheric pressure appeared to win out as Shields Chevy
experienced an apparent flat tire on the final circuit. Bradford slipped
by for his second win in as many weeks then three time winner Tyler
Landers got by for second. Shields just held off Eric Green for third
while New Market's Nathan Norris recovered from an early pit stop to edge
Denise Landis for fifth. That's right, Denise not Dennis as the ladies
are
making their own noise what with Denise's sixth place finish in a 25 car
Super Stock feature and Connie Robersons seventh place outlaw pony finish.
Add Debra Renshaw to the NASCAR Busch Grand National circuit next season
and with Sarah Fisher already out running the Indy car set and us guys
better watch out. Hold the door open for these ladies and you may never
catch up with them. Ruth and Bradford also were heat race winners.

night but a protest at the scales and abracadabra, the win is gone. Sain
refused to open his engine for all to see and Michael Chumbley was
declared the victor. Gary Reid was second ahead of Roland McKelvie and
Ricky Brown. Brown and 2002 Winchester Speedway champion Joey Sisk had
some very hard contact with less than two laps remaining. As they battled

Sam Range (Open Wheel), Bobby Bradford (Super Stock) and Boyce Pope
(Rookie Pony) became the 69th, 70th and 71st different class winners at
DRS in 2002 while, Jerry Owens, Tim Orrell and Jimmy Dale halted their
absenteeism from victory lane on Saturday night. With some six different
racers either notching their initial win at DRS in the current season
or
else returning to victory lane after an extended respite it was a changing
of the guard, at least for a week anyway! Well all except for Michael
Chumbley of Columbia, Tennessee. See, Mr. Mini Stock is such a frequent
visitor to the winners circle at DRS one could forgive him if he used
Duck
River Speedways track mailing address as his own!
In Late Model competition, last week's winner, Jimmy Nowlin set
quick time with a 13.574 clocking but could not hold back the Muscle
Shoals (AL) Marauder, Jerry Owens for the win. The former track champion
in only his seventh start of 2002 at DRS, garnered his third victory by

Mount Pleasants's Sam Range has collected numerous victories
at
various speedways around the mid south but while he has had many strong
efforts at DRS, the Mountain Dew sponsored #1MD has mainly collected a
series of near misses and headaches at the clay oval in Wheel, Tennessee.
That was until last night The Pepsi traveler won his heat race then beat

At Duck River Speedway you can count on two things: 1)
Your fingers
and 2) The fact that the Super Stocks provide all the action any fan could
ask for. Last night was no exception and while 2002 class champion Jay
George won his heat race along with heat winners Rudder Harper and Tash
Bruce it was Bobby Bradford of Estill Springs taking the measure of an

count the four Outlaw Pony wins). The 2001 and 2002 class champion topped
