ESS/URC Challenge - $3,000 to win. |
A Total of $3,000 Awaits the Winner of the Empire Super Sprints/United
Racing Club Challenge Series Event at Rolling Wheels on October 11th
By Dean Reynolds
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Two of the most successful 360 sprint car organizations
will end their season on the race track on Saturday night, October 11th
at the Rolling Wheels Raceway Park as a part of the annual Super DIRT
Week. The United Racing Club (URC) and the Empire Super Sprints (ESS)
are ready to do battle on the big half-mile in Elbridge, N.Y. for the
final leg of the ESS/URC Challenge Series for 2003.
The first event was held back on May 4th at the Grandview Speedway
and while ESS’ Dan Kaszubinski took the victory the event could
actually be called a draw as he was wheeling Elmer Stoltzfus’
#00. Elmer has been a car owner on the URC trail for several years and
Kaszubinski was subbing for an injured Gary Gollub. A field of over
55 sprinters will fill the pits with each club bringing their best to
take home bragging rights.
ESS has been celebrating its 20th Anniversary Tour and has been rewarded
with one of the closest point battles in its history. The event will
be awarding a set point total for each ESS member that runs the Challenge
Series event. When Mike Lutz rolls his sprinter onto the track for his
heat event he will be crowned the ESS champion for 2003 just edging
Justin Barger and Kaszubinski for his first sprint car title in his
18 year sprint car career. Joining those top ESS stars in hopes of capturing
the checkered flag in the 25 lap event will be John Karklin Jr., Lance
Yonge, Quebec’s Alain Bergeron, New Hampshire’s Don Sharp
Jr., Bubby Kerrick as well as some 20 other top sprint car chauffeurs.
With URC set to close its 56th consecutive season, which makes them
the longest running sprint car organization in the nation, they too
have a spirited dog fight for their 2003 championship. Dave Ely currently
sits atop the point battle but Trevor Lewis, Curt Michael, Chris Coyle
and Kevin Welsh are close behind with three full point shows left on
the URC trail. Along with the top five, names like Bill Brian Jr., Mike
Haggenbottom, Dave McGough and local favorite Doug Emery will fly the
URC banner on this October night in upstate, N.Y.
Last year former ESS rookie of the year Kyle Drum performed a little
“alphabet soup” for the fans on hand by coming through the
C and B-Mains to earn a 21st. starting berth for the 25 lap finale’.
In a brilliant charge, he passed all foes including Lutz with two laps
to go to take home the $3,000 top prize. Drum as well as Kaszubinski
will be joined by Kramer Williamson, Becca Anderson and Rick Wilson
as former winners of the ESS/URC event that are expected to be on hand.
A total of $3,000 will again await the winner of the $18,000 event.
Drivers that are not ESS or URC members will be required to purchase
a temporary membership as well as either and ESS or URC mandated right
rear tire to be eligible to compete. With both organizations having
a banner year sprint car fans will be in for a treat once again at the
dirt oval known as the “Fast Track”. Super DIRT Week fans
get ready….the best from ESS and the best from URC have their
guns ready and are set to wage a war. It will be excitement guaranteed!!!

Checkered Flags A plenty for Team VanDusen on the 2003 Empire Super
Sprints Tour
By Dean Reynolds
OTEGO, N.Y. – For the first time ever, husband and wife Mike
and Deb VanDusen attacked the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) tour with a
two car team. Teenage son Jeff VanDusen wheeled the first car for his
second full season on the tour. The teammate to the second generation
driver was Mercer Pa. sprint veteran Mike Lutz who tasted the world
of ESS the first time during the second half of the 2002 season.
The results were headline making on the 20th Anniversary Tour for
the 360 sprint car organization. Lutz, who has 17 years of 360 and 410
sprint car experience, collected five A-Main victories on his way to
just about locking up the coveted ESS title. Lutz just has to take a
green flag Saturday night, October 11th at the Rolling Wheels Raceway
and the championship is his. Also, by virtue of leading the most A-Main
laps, Lutz also captured the Gater Racing News lap leader award.
While it was an up and down season for the young chauffeur, VanDusen
still picked up his second career ESS feature event victory along with
nine heat wins and three dash wins which netted him the Walt’s
Hobby Dash Series point title as well. Despite missing one race due
to a concussion, he still placed 11th on the season long points standings.
“It was a trying year at times, but if it wasn’t for some
tough luck we had a very successful season for both Mike and Jeff.”
Noted Mike VanDusen who has 17 career ESS victories to his credit. “But,
this was a rewarding year for me personally. Back in 1988 I was second
to Mal Lane in points going into the final event. I won the race but
Mal finished just high enough to win the title. In this years final
point show Justin Barger won the feature but Mike (Lutz) did his job
to clinch the point title. It’s my first in sprints and it sure
feels good.”
Lutz has been running winged sprint cars for nearly two decades all
over the country with over 70 feature events wins to his credit. The
2003 ESS championship will be his first ever title which comes with
heartfelt moments. “You just don’t know who much this does
mean to me. It was my goal right from the start of the year, I wanted
the ESS title.” Said a determined Lutz. “I had a big lead
early but then everything you could think of started to happen and Justin
took the lead in August. I was starting to lose my hair and starting
to go a bit crazy, but we got the lead back with a strong four race
stretch run. It’s a dream come true. I became a dad for the first
time and got a sprint car championship all in one year. I just have
to thank the VamDusen's for such a great opportunity and all their hard
work in giving me the best car possible.”
For Jeff, the learning curve continued on the tough ESS circuit. “We
just didn’t have the luck we wanted most of the year. We were
fast at just about every race, nine heat wins and the dash title but
the features were just a different story.” Jeff remarked on his
2003 season. “I felt good to finally get that win late in August,
we probably should have a few more but I’m still learning each
time I race and we’ll continue to improve.”
Team VanDusen will have both winged machines at Rolling Wheels on
the 11th of October in hopes of taking the $3,000 top prize that is
offered for the 25 lap Empire Super Sprints/United Racing Club Challenge
Series event. For Lutz, he hopes its payback time as he was passed with
two laps to go in last year’s event missing out on the victory.
For VanDusen, holding the checkered flag on this night will be the biggest
win of his still very young racing career.
After the Rolling Wheels event the off-season will be filled hunting
down additional sponsorship to continue a two car team for the 2004
ESS season. Major backing for this season came from Dale Beach Logging,
ProSpas, and the Dave Blaney Outlaw Driving Experience.
Justin Barger Motorsports Completes A Very Successful Campaign with
the Empire Super Sprints
By Dean Reynolds
MONTROSE, N.Y. – As the final point show was held on August 31st
for the Empire Super Sprints (ESS), teenage, second generation chauffeur
Justin Barger was right on the heals of sprint car veteran Mike Lutz
for the 2003 championship. Barger and his Cortlandt Auto Body backed
Maxim powered through the field to pick up the A-Main victory at the
Utica-Rome Speedway. Lutz though finished in fourth holding the point
lead by a mere six markers.
While there was a small look of disappointment, the 2003 season for
Justin Barger Motorsports surpassed all expectations on the ESS tour
which is celebrating its 20th anniversary season. Not only did the Montrose,
N.Y. star pick up his first career ESS victory on July 6th at the same
Vernon, N.Y. half-mile but incredible consistency saw the entire team
in one of the closest championship point battles in ESS history. Only
one time did the colorful #32 not finish an ESS feature event and that
came in the opening event at the Black Rock Speedway on April 12th.
“It was just a great season for me and my family. We did have
a goal of trying to win the ESS title but we weren’t sure if we
could be as close as we were since we really haven’t done the
entire tour yet.” Said Barger on his 2003 plans. “We dropped
out in the first race but you never give up and as the season went on
we got faster and more consistent.”
Two Maxim’s powered by RPM Engine Development out of Tempe,
AZ. was the stable of equipment used in what turned to be a headline
making season. But, it was a switch to the new sprinter back in May
at Utica-Rome that turned the year into a whirlwind of success.
“We decided to switch to the new sprint and did that car ever
work. What we learned on that car we put it to the older one and soon
we had two really good cars.” Noted Barger on the equipment that
is prepared by his father Chris, a former big block modified star. “With
the cars running well I was able to concentrate more on my driving and
getting better at driving. We started to finish every race in the front
and soon we were right there in the point fight.”
In mid-August, Barger moved passed Lutz to take the point lead which
had all in ESS standing up and taking notice. Lutz did regain his lead
back but it all came down to the final race on the final night in August.
“We did what we had to do, we came through the field and won the
race.” Barger stated. “Mike (Lutz) did what he had to do
also and he just got us. But, we tried, we gave it our all.”
Barger followed the successful point campaign with a solid seventh
place finish at the annual Bully Hill Vineyards Fall Sprint Nationals
back on Sept. 6th being the second highest finishing ESS driver in the
35 lap feature event. One more race remains on the ESS schedule which
is the annual Empire Super Sprints/United Racing Club challenge event
on October 11th at the Rolling Wheels Raceway as a part of Super DIRT
Week. The 25 lap A-Main pays $3,000 to win and Barger will be one of
the favorites.
The future looks bright for the young talent and down the road he
hopes to maybe get some asphalt experience to move up the ranks in the
world of auto racing. “We ran a midget for the Seymour family
a few times with NEMA and we were really fast. We just didn’t
get the right breaks but we could have won a show there also.”
Barger continued. “I think I’ll get some test sessions with
a Silver Crown car and we will go from there.”
For now though, Barger will be honored at the annual ESS awards banquet
which will be held on November 15th at the Turning Stone Casino Resort
where he will be honored in recognition for a fine effort in 2003.
Mike Woodring tops Four Car Battle for ESS Victory at Little Valley
By Dean Reynolds
LITTLE VALLEY, N.Y. – It wasn’t just a little playful four
car get together during the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) A-Main at the
Little Valley Speedway Friday night. It was a classic on-the-edge-of-your-seat
thriller where 15th place starting Mike Woodring took the lead from
Mike Lutz on lap 23 of the 25 A-Main for his second victory on the 20th
Anniversary Tour.
What made this version an instant ESS classic was an incredible four
sprint car battle for the lead position that filled the final five laps
which had the big crowd in awe until the checkered flag flew to announce
the conclusion. Along with Woodring, the eight-time ESS champ and Lutz,
a four-time winner this season, was Dan Kaszubinski, who owns 19 career
ESS victories and this years Knoxville Nationals Rookie of the Year
in 22 year female sensation Erin Crocker.
All four were under a blanket among lapped traffic as well on a very
fast Little Valley half-mile. Each driver had his or her chance to take
over the lead for a possible victory but it was the master of the Valley
himself, Mike Woodring that took over on the last lap. After surviving
a last lap restart the driver of the Upstate Kenworth sponsored Maxim
picked up his 59th ESS victory.
"That was a fun race from my view, actually that was real fun!"
exclaimed Woodring on the wild 25 lap affair. "When I finally broke
free from the traffic I knew I had a good distance to make up to catch
Mike (Lutz) and Dan (Kaszubinski). This might be the hardest I ever
drove here. The track was good and there was plenty of room to make
passes, that’s what I needed tonight."
Lutz’s teammate Jeff VanDusen lead the first seven laps until
a red flag was displayed for a tipped over Tim Zimbardi. Under the red
VanDusen noticed a loose water hose and took his sprinter to the pits.
Repairs were made but the lead was lost. Lutz was now the leader and
the Mercer, Pa. star was hoping to finally break out of a month long
slump that has seen him lose his ESS point lead. Behind him was Kaszubinski
and shortly after the green light shined, the two pulled away from the
field.
Woodring blasted into 4th on lap nine and then third on lap 10…the
chase was on. Crocker busted through on lap 12 to pull into fifth and
then fourth on lap 14, she began her chase as well. The feature event
remained under the green lights and soon slower cars were going to be
a key in what was one exciting conclusion. Soon Woodring and Crocker
closed in and from lap 20 to the finish all four cars were seen changing
lanes, dodging and passing lapped traffic while having a goal to collect
the win.
"I tried to use the lapped cars to pass him (Lutz) but just as
I think I had a run it seemed like my lane would get taken away."
Said Woodring on the final five laps. "I was trying everything
and anything and while I was doing that I could hear and see Dan and
then they told me Erin was right there as well. It was chaos."
The slower car of Dick Spadaro was right in front of the leaders in
turns three and four, Lutz took the high road around while Woodring
saw just a little lane down low and he went for it. "Dick moved
up just enough for me to get under. Then I got a great shot off of four
to pass both of them and get the lead." said Woodring.
Another red flag came out on lap 24, for VanDusen who lost his breaks
to hit the turn three wall and flip over once. The restart was all Woodring
and he brought his four race old Maxim to the victory. For Lutz, it
was a disappointment to take second but a good finish did come his way.
"My car got way to loose in the second half. I was doing all I
could to keep Dan and Mike behind me, I mean I was keeping this car
as wide as I could." noted Lutz. "We switched to the new Eagle,
I needed the new car to see if I can get going again and see if I can
get the points lead back and hopefully a championship. I made a little
ground tonight but it’s going to be a real important three race
weekend next weekend."
Woodring took the victory over Lutz, Kaszubinski and Crocker, who barely
nipped a fast closing Justin Barger on the final lap. Barger’s
top five was enough for him to keep his ESS point lead. Making up the
next five were the Mike’s Drive-In #36 of Mike Stelter, John Karklin
Jr., Lance Yonge, Bob Podolak and Don Sharp Jr.
Along with the two reds, a caution on lap six for Alain Bergeron and
Randy Years who spun in turn three. In the Zimbardi incident, Pup Nystrom,
Brad Knab and son Jared were also involved. Only Knab was able to return.
Taking the Engler Machine and Tool heat events were Karklin Jr., VanDusen
and Lutz with the MRE Productions/Walt’s Hobby Dash won by Woodring.
ESS NOTES: - A total of 24 sprinters made the tow
to the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds….Making his first ESS start
of 2003 was Nystrom…With one final full point weekend left, the
top five in points is still the closest in ESS history. For Barger,
Lutz, Kaszubinski, Karklin Jr. and Yonge it’s going to be an exciting
and stressful three-race stint….Next weekend will see the ESS
20th Anniversary tour making stops to Autodrome Granby and Drummond
on Friday and Saturday and then it’s down to the Utica-Rome Speedway
on Sunday.

Empire Super Sprints to Make a Return to the Brockville Ontario Speedway
By Dean Reynolds
SYRACUSE. N.Y. – It’s back to the “BOS”, the
Brockville Ontario Speedway this Friday night, August 16 for another
round of the VSM Canadian Invasion series for the Empire Super Sprints
(ESS). The event will be the second and final visit by ESS’ 20th
Anniversary Tour to the fast quarter-mile oval that borders the St.
Lawrence Seaway.
Back on May 30th, veteran Bobby Podolak survived a wild 25 lap A-Main
that saw five sprinters get on their wings. Podolak beat Justin Barger,
Quebec’s Alain Bergeron, Bubby Kerrick and Don Sharp Jr. to the
line. All these stars along with four-time winner in 2003 Mike Lutz,
Dan Kaszubinski as well as local favorites, the father and son team
of Rick and Kyle Wilson will be in the field.
Coming into Friday’s event, Barger currently leads Kaszubinski
and Mike Woodring for the VSM title that will pay the champion $500
at the annual awards banquet held in November.
It’s “America’s Race Cars” set for another
invasion to Canada, the stars and cars from ESS are ready to see who
is boss at the “BOS”. Fans in Brockville, Ontario get ready
for some wild sprint car action and as always it will be excitement

Lance Yonge Finally Breaks the Black Rock Jinx: Takes His First Ever
ESS Victory at His Home Track
By Dean Reynolds
DUNDEE. N.Y. – “I just can’t tell you how happy I
am…this win is the best!” screamed Lance Yonge in victory
lane to the big crowd at the Black Rock Speedway on Friday night. In
the ranks of the Empire Super Sprints (ESS), no one has more laps on
the Yates County oval than the Penn Yan, N.Y. sprint star.
Taking the lead from good friend Bubby Kerrick on lap 14, the Lanes
Yamaha sponsored Maxim filtered through lapped traffic to give Yonge
his first victory at Black Rock since 1988. For the former DIRT big
block and small block champion a huge monkey was lifted off his back
that has been hounding him since his ESS sprint career started in 1992.
With added monies from GM Visa Card, the winners share was $1575.
“Finally, I can’t believe it has been this long for me
to finally get a win at Dundee.” said a driver that looked like
he won the lottery afterwards. “Yes the track has changed over
time and yes it’s now a sprint car but for 11 years you think
I could get one win at my home track, just one.”
“I had a good feeling tonight though, the car was fast. But,
I’ve been fast here before. I could have won a few times only
not to get a right break here or there.” Yonge continued on the
long-time struggle. “The track was in great shape tonight, it
was fast and I actually used the cushion tonight which isn’t my
style. But, that is where the car felt good.”
Ageless veteran George Ely lead the first 10 laps before Kerrick,
a former Black Rock regular himself, took over. But among heavy traffic,
Yonge quickly closed in on Kerrick’s Maxim and as lap 14 was to
be scored Yonge was in the lead.
“I saw Bubby ahead of me and it was just one of those deals
where you are in traffic it’s better to be in second than in the
lead.” noted Yonge on the pass for the win. “I just had
a better lane and made the pass. That’s twice I’ve taken
a win away from Bubby (who is looking for his first ever ESS victory)
but when you are in a championship fight you have to make every pass
count. Bubby has been a great friend and his win is coming, he just
might pass me for it.”
After the pass, Yonge survived a lap 15 restart and slower traffic
in the final ten laps to collect ESS career win #24. Kerrick had a spirited
duel with John Karklin Jr. in the closing laps but he held on to take
second with Karklin Jr., who won the last ESS event in July, the home
in third. Alain Bergeron was home in fourth with Justin Barger collecting
the Walt’s Hobby Hard Charger bonus coming from his 16th place
start to take fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Ely, Tim Kelly, Mike
Lutz, Doug Emery and Canadian Rick Wilson.
One red and one yellow slowed the action. On lap four, Jeff VanDusen
hopped a wheel of a slower car and went for a wild ride in turn four.
The second generation driver was running in second spot at the time
and while the car was a write-off, he walked away. On lap 15 Brian Dumigan
and Kyle Moffit got together in the back stretch. Under the yellow,
Western Pa. star Scott Bonnell stopped on the track after almost colliding
with another car. Bonnell was running in third spot but a flat tire
saw his sprinter go pit side.
Taking the Engler Machine and Tool heat events were VanDusen, Kerrick
and Ely.
ESS NOTES: With rain all throughout the state of
New York, 24 cars still found their way to Dundee….With the Winston
Cup Series down the road at Watkins Glen Tony Stewart, after timing
fourth fastest earlier in the day, made his annual visit to the Black
Rock VIP tower…The Black Rock management deserve a big thumbs
up, despite rain falling after the scheduled gate opening time they
decided to give it a go and was rewarded with a great program…The
ESS 20th Anniversary Tour will make one more appearance to the 4/10th
mile oval on September 5 & 6 for the $43,000 Bully Hill Vineyards
Fall Sprint Nationals….Next week will find another VSM Abrasives
Canadian Invasion event Friday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway.

Empire Super Sprint Stars Ready for the Tournament of Champions in
Knoxville, Iowa
By Dean Reynolds
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On Saturday and Sunday, August 9 & 10, the
fifth edition of the Brodix Tournament of Champions (ToC) at the famed
Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa will be held. Six of the best sprint
cars teams in the ranks of the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) will be making
the journey west in hopes for the Tournament championship.
The list of ESS representatives will be headed by current point leader
and four time winner so far on the tour in Mercer, Pa.’s Mike
Lutz. A veteran of both 410 and 360 competition Lutz brings a wealth
of talent behind the wheel of a winged sprint car and will be an instant
threat to pick up the victory at Knoxville.
Lance Yonge has entered the previous four ToC’s and will wheel
the Lane’s Yamaha #5 for another attempt to the bring home the
bragging rights for ESS. The Penn Yan, N.Y. star is locked in a tight
point battle looking for his first ever championship and has already
visited victory lane in 2003 as well.
Rob Dietrick will head to Knoxville for his first ever visit to the
Marion County Fairgrounds. Last year the Farmington, N.Y. pilot was
all set to make the Tourney when a blown engine the week before nixed
his plans. Even though he is winless so far on ESS’ 20th Anniversary
Tour his blue #10 Maxim likes the big, wide open dirt ovals and Knoxville
will fit into his style.
Bubby Kerrick has been a huge ESS supporter since he made his debut
in a sprint car nine years ago. Always a consistent runner, the Stanley,
N.Y. star always finishes the season in the top ten in points. Like
Dietrick, Kerrick will run a Maxim built sprinter and he too likes the
fast ovals.
The final two entries that will carry the ESS banner is the Mike Woodring
owned racing team of Woodring and female sensation Erin Crocker. Both
drivers already have Knoxville laps under their belt as they ran the
360 Nationals back in June with Crocker shocking many in attendance
with a strong effort that put her in the Nationals A-Main. Like Yonge,
Woodring has run the four previous ToC’s and would like to add
this National event to his resume’ For Crocker, winning the ToC
has a female sprint car driver will make headlines from coast to coast.
A total of 13 point leaders from 13 different sanctions make the 2003
version the most talented in the history of the event. On Saturday will
be a special $1,500 to win “Night Before the Tournament”
with a huge $4,000 pay day awaiting the winner of the A-Main on Sunday.
Last year saw Knoxville Raceway regular Josh Higday keeping the championship
trophy in his own backyard. ESS will be sending a full arsenal of sprint
car talent to the state of Iowa for the 2003 version in hopes of collecting
the first ever title for the Northeastern based sprint car sanctioning
body. August 9 and 10, the 360 sprint car world heads to the “Capital
of Sprint Car Racing”, it’s the Brodix Tournament of Champions.
Let the best team win!!

Yonge. With the closest point fight in the 20 year history of ESS fans

Kerrick, who will be looking for his first ever ESS feature win at his
home track, Quebec’s Alain Bergeron, New Hampshire’s Don
Sharp Jr. and Mike Stelter.

Bully Hill Vineyards Sprint Nationals Dash Qualifiers Continue
By Dean Reynolds
DUNDEE, N.Y. – Six down and four to go, the Bully Vineyards Sprint
Nationals Dash Qualifiers held in four states and two Canadian provinces
continue throughout the 2003 season. Three events for the United Racing
Club (URC), Empire Super Sprints (ESS), the Patriot Sprint Group (PSG)
and one event for the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) will guarantee
the best drivers from the Northeast and Canada in the special 10 lap
dash held on Friday night, Sept. 5 at the Black Rock Speedway.
West Lawn, Pa.’s Dave Ely won the latest Dash Qualifier at the
Bridgeport Speedway in N.J. with URC. The sprint car veteran is currently
leading the points with URC looking for his first ever title with the
club which is celebrating it’s 56th season. Joining Ely will be
Curt Michael who won his qualifier at the Delaware Int’l Speedway.
Michael is a former URC champion and like Ely will be a threat to win
not only the special 10 lap dash but the Nationals itself. The final
dash will be held on Sunday August, 31 at the Grandview Speedway.
ESS has run two qualifiers as well with their current point leader
Mike Lutz picking up the first event at the Utica-Rome Speedway. Many
fans remember that Lutz was leading last years Nationals with just five
laps to go when his front wing mount broke handing the lead and the
win to Mike Woodring. Joining Lutz in the dash as an ESS representative
will be long-time veteran Bobby Podolak who picked up his victory at
the Brockville-Ontario Speedway in Ontario, Canada. The final event
under the ESS banner will be the first ever qualifier held in Quebec
which is on August 29th at the Autodrome Granby.
The PSG group is under their inaugural year and they too have held
two of their three qualifiers. Journeyman Scott Bonnell won their first
event at the Eriez Speedway. Bonnell doesn’t race with any sanctions
regularly and likes to go where the money is and will be a welcomed
addition to the Bully Hill field. Young Tim Barnard picked up his spot
in the dash at the Canandaigua Speedway on July 5th. The final event
for PSG will be on August 16th at the Can-Am Motorsports Park.
The SOS organization will hold one qualifier which is the next event
up on the schedule. On August 9th the stars and cars from SOS will invade
the Brighton Speedway in Ontario. Drivers such as Glenn Styres, who
ran the Nationals last year, Dick Mahoney and Keith Dempster will be
favorites to grab the checkered flag.
September 5 & 6, the Fifth Annual Bully Hill Vineyards Fall Sprint
Nationals presented by SP Wilson/Lakes Gas is the richest event for
360 sprint cars on the East Coast side of the Mississippi. More than
$40,000 in cash will be handed out over two days in the open competition
event.
Friday will see time trials, heats and three 16 lap features known
as the “Sweet 16’s” that pay $1,000 to win each will
join the special 10 lap dash making for an exciting first night of action.
Drivers will be earning points under the famous “Knoxville Nationals”
point system. Then on Saturday one more set of heats will be run to
determine the starting line ups for the D,C,B, and A-Mains. All the
action climaxes with the 35 lap Nationals which pays the winner over
$4,000 in cash.
The first weekend in September will be a sprint car fans dream. Some
of the best winged sprint car action will take place at the Black Rock
Speedway in Dundee, N.Y. Make plans now to be a part of history and
the excitement is guaranteed!
Empire Super Sprints to Invade CVRA Circuit for This Weekend.
By Dean Reynolds
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After successful treks to Quebec and Ontario,
Canada, it’s time for the 20th Anniversary Tour of the Empire
Super Sprints (ESS) to come back to the good ‘ole USA with two
events on the Champlain Valley Racing Association Circuit. This Friday
night, August, 1st it’s the second visit to the Albany-Saratoga
Speedway and then on Sunday the third it will be off to the Devil’s
Bowl Speedway, Vermont’s fastest half-mile dirt track.
Back on June 6th, current ESS point leader picked up his third of
four wins so far on the 2003 season. Lutz bested Mike Woodring and Bill
Bailey for the A-Main victory. Woodring along with his teammate Erin
Crocker are expected to be in the field along with local stars John
Karklin Jr. and Jeff VanDusen.
Three Engler Machine and Tool heat events will kick off the action
followed by the Gabriel’s Super Market/Walt’s Hobby Dash
and the KSE Racing Products B-Main. The finale will once again be the
25 A-Main event.
It will be a welcomed Saturday rest day before “America’s
Race Cars” head northeast to Fair Haven, Vermont for the only
visit of the season at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Last year it
was Woodring beating Lutz to the stripe in an exciting feature event.
Rob Dietrick, New Hampshire’s Don Sharp Jr. and Lance Yonge also
finished in the top spots. These top sprint chauffeurs along with second
and third placeman in the points in Justin Barger and Dan Kaszubinski
will be in the pits on both nights.
The racing program will be the same at the "Bowl" with the
National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum sponsoring the four lap
dash for cash.
This weekend ESS heads east. CVRA circuit, get ready for the invasion
of the winged sprint cars and as always it will be excitement guaranteed!!!
Mike Woodring Victorious in ESS’ First Ever Visit to Ohsweken
By Dean Reynolds
OHSWEKEN, ONT. – A little experience and a brand new car went
a long way for eight-time champion Mike Woodring Friday night at the
Ohsweken Speedway. As the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) made their first
ever visit to the fast speed plant owned and promoted by Glenn Styres,
Woodring was a handful of drivers that have made a competitive lap on
the 4/10ths mile. Using his knowledge Woodring came out on top of a
spirited duel with Tim Kelly to collect the VSM Abrasives Canadian Invasion
25 lap event.
Kelly was looking to make a clean sweep of the night’s activities
as he won his heat and the dash but it was Woodring who came from his
13th place start to swap the lead several times among lapped cars before
taking control for good on the 18th lap to record his second ESS victory
of the 2003 season. The victory thrilled the packed house on hand as
Woodring was clear cut favorite with the energetic Canadian sprint car
crowd.
“That was a fun race and I’m extremely happy to win here,
I just love this place! We finished this new Maxim at two o’clock
this afternoon started it up when we got here and now we are in victory
lane. ” said a happy winner in front of the huge throng. “The
track was a little drier than normal tonight but it made for a lot of
room to pass and that’s what I needed to get by Timmy (Kelly)”
Kelly shot off from his pole starting spot to lead the early stages
comfortably and he too was looking for his second checkered flag on
the 20th Anniversary Tour for ESS. While the Rock Stream, N.Y. star
was holding his solid lead it was two Mike’s making their rapid
moves to the front. One was Woodring but the other actually broke through
first and that was 11th place starting and current ESS point leader
Mike Lutz
Lutz was fifth by the third lap and up to third on lap seven, while
Woodring moved into fifth on lap four and fourth on lap eight. These
two rivals were looking to make it a three horse race up front until
the unexpected happened with nine laps in the books. Just as he was
ready to make his moves on Kelly and teammate Jeff VanDusen a large
cloud of smoke broke out from under the hood of Lutz’s mount.
A rod went through the block ending his bid and also making the ESS
point championship fight a lot more interesting.
“I was basically following Mike (Lutz) through the field. He
was real fast and if we both got to Tim, it was going to be fun to watch
with all the lapped cars also.” noted the Eden, N.Y. star. “But,
when he lost his engine then I just had to find a way to get by Tim,
once I got by I felt I could hold the lead but he was running the lane
that was the fastest.”
Kelly’s mount hugged the lowest portion of the Ohsweken oval
while Woodring was slinging his Upstate Kenworth backed #19 on the outside
up against the wall. Kelly lead to lap 13, Woodring took his turn on
lap 14 and 15, Kelly got the lead back for 16 & 17 before Woodring
finally got a good run to make the pass and then used the slower cars
as blockers to take control for good.
“I was trying to make sure I got a good enough run past him
before I moved down to the bottom.” Woodring mentioned on his
plan to take the lead. “I finally got the right spot as I knew
the lapped cars would get in his way. Once I got the lead I went to
the bottom and the car just got faster. It was a great night for all
of us, now I think I’ll get this thing painted tomorrow!”
At the finish of the 25 exciting laps it was Woodring in for his 58th
career ESS triumph, Kelly home with a solid night for second, Justin
Barger came from 12th to take third followed by VanDusen and John Karklin
Jr. Making up the next five were Erin Crocker, the Autotech of Syracuse
#20 of Dan Kaszubinski, Lance Yonge, Mike Stelter and Alain Bergeron.
Bubby Kerrick’s spin on lap three was the only caution of the
event.
Taking the Engler Machine and Tool heat events were Yonge, Lutz and
Kelly with the Bicknell Racing Products/Walt’s Hobby Dash also
won by Kelly.
ESS NOTES: 21 sprints made the tow to far western,
Ontario…new entries were the track owner himself, Glenn Styres,
who lives in a beautiful house just outside turn two, Keith Dempster,
Dave MacLeod and Mark Schulz….Styres suffered rear end troubles
most of the night and went pit side just before the green flag dropped
for the A-Main….Good to see Billy Coffey back and walking the
pits. Still very sore but a smile was seen as he made visits to all
his fellow ESS competitors….The first ever appearance by ESS was
a huge hit with the biggest crowd of the year on hand. ESS and Ohsweken
will pair up again for 2004 with some exciting plans to be announced
in the off-season…Next up will be a visit to the CVRA circuit
with a Friday night stop at Albany-Saratoga and then off to the Devil’s
Bowl Speedway in Fair Haven, Vermont on Sunday.

Empire Super Sprints to Make First Ever Appearance at the Ohsweken
Speedway on July 25th
By Dean Reynolds
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – When the Empire Super Sprints’ (ESS) 20th
Anniversary schedule was released, a new addition was seen on Friday
night, July 25th. The Ohsweken Speedway in Ohsweken, Ontario will host
it’s first ever ESS event which is also part of the VSM Abrasives
Canadian Invasion series.
Glenn Styres is the owner and builder of the fast ½ mile and
is a racer himself as he steps behind the wheel of his own sprinter
and CASCAR Late Model. Sprints are a huge hit with the fans at Ohsweken
as both the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) and the Michigan based Sprints
on Dirt (SoD) have held events this year. On the 25th, the stars and
cars of ESS will invade with the biggest crowd in the tracks history
expected.
Leading the winged brigade to Ohsweken will be current ESS point leader
and four-time winner Mike Lutz. Lutz’s closest rivals in Dan Kaszubinski,
Justin Barger, Lance Yonge and John Karklin Jr. will also be on hand
looking to close in on the point lead. The Woodring Racing team of eight-time
ESS champion Mike Woodring and Erin Crocker will also be in the pits
as well as Styres himself, who is coming off two wins with his sprinter,
and other drivers from the SOS circuit.
The 25 lap A-Main pays $1450 to win with $200 going to the last place
finisher making the event the most lucrative in Ohsweken history. Three
Engler Machine and Tool heat events along with the Walt’s Hobby
Dash and the KSE Racing Products B-Main will precede the finale.

Mike Lutz Collects His Fourth ESS A-Main Triumph by Leading All 25
Laps at the Edelweiss Speedway
Frogtown Falls to Rain - Race Date - 7/18/03
By Dean Reynolds
CANTLEY, QC - Two main contenders for the 2003 Empire Super Sprints
(ESS) tour title made up the front row Friday night at the Edelweiss
Speedway in Quebec, Canada. By luck of the nightly pill draw current
point leader Mike Lutz was on the pole with ESS star Dan Kaszubinski
alongside for the start of the 25 lap VSM Abrasives Canadian Invasion
A-Main which was played host to a huge standing room only crowd.
When the green flag flew Lutz's ProSpas sponsored #58 pulled out into
the lead and he masterfully trekked all 25 laps on the quick 1/3rd mile
oval to keep the exciting Kaszubinski at bay for his fourth ESS triumph
on the 20th Anniversary Tour. The victory for the Mercer Pa. chauffeur
was his sixth career with the organization and he also opened up his
point lead on his contenders which included Kaszubinski, Justin Barger,
John Karklin Jr. and Lance Yonge.
"The number draw was definitely the key for me tonight."
dead-panned Lutz. "Finally it fell my way, Lance, Dan, Mike (Woodring),
they all had a chance to start in the front and tonight it came my way.
I just tried to make sure I lead from the start and then it was getting
through lapped cars without making a mistake so I can stay in the lead."
With only one lap caution on lap 22, the front of the field spent
most of the race weeding their way through slower cars making for some
nail biting moments. "The track really changed after the heats
and the bottom was the way to go, I just tried to keep a smooth pace
and hope I didn't get into any trouble with the lapped cars." said
Lutz on his game plan. "I didn't know if Dan was going to try to
run around the outside of me or not. But, I wasn't coming off the bottom."
Kaszubinski indeed uses the outside lane more times than not to make
his moves, but a failing tire and changing track conditions hindered
his bid for a pass to take over the top spot. "I really didn't
get close enough to Mike to make a move." noted Kaszubinski. "There
was one time where he did bobble but I was too far away to do anything.
I think we chose the wrong tire tonight (Dan ran the Hoosier RD15, Lutz
used a D20), I went soft and the tire went away quickly. I was just
spinning the tires out there and then when I saw Mike used the D20 I
knew I made the wrong choice."
When the lone caution came out on lap 22, the two sprinters were nose
to tail for the restart but it was Lutz's Maxim quicker than Kaszubinski's
and he opened up a slight lead that held up for the final three tours
of the Edelweiss oval. At the checkered flag of starter Alain LaBlanc
it was Lutz home for the win with Kaszubinski in the bridesmaid slot.
Rob Dietrick took third for his second top five finish in a row ahead
of Don Sharp Jr. and Rick Wilson who collected the Walt's Hobby Hard
Charger bonus after starting in 15th. Alain Bergeron kept his French-Canadian
fans happy with a sixth place finish, Justin Barger came from 17th to
seventh followed by Mike Stelter and Stateline winner Tim Kelly.
The caution on lap 22 was for Nick Fratto. The Engler Machine and
Tool heat events were won by Jeff VanDusen, Stelter and Sharp Jr. with
the Winters Performance Products/Walt's Hobby Dash also won by VanDusen
who stretched out his point lead in the Walt's Hobby Dash Series.
ESS NOTES: A total of 19 sprinters made the Friday
night tow just North of Canada's capital...With the top two point runners
in the VSM standings absent, Bill Coffey with injuries and Mike Woodring
running the Kings Royal weekend at Eldora, the new VSM point leader
is Kaszubinski....In his dash win, VanDusen toured the Edelweiss oval
in 12.4 seconds....With the new ownership team in their second year
at Edelweiss, many improvements have been seen which has produced big
crowds all year. Look for ESS to make its return in 2004 for another
exciting event….The Saturday night event at Frogtown fell victim
to rain, a possible make-up date is in the works….Next Friday
will be the first ever ESS visit to the Ohsweken Speedway for another
VSM Abrasives Canadian Invasion event.
