Shannon Babb, Tom Ratajczyk & Scott Stuppy take I-55 Pepsi Nationals Titles!
This was Babb's second big win of 2003 at I-55 Raceway. Babb also won the $10,000 Tri-State Challenge event back in May. Babb took the lead on the opening lap from his front row outside starting position. The first caution came on lap seven when fourth place running Justin Allgaier found the turn two wall and collected pole sitter Randy Korte. Korte was able to continue, but Allgaier's night was done. The second caution came out two laps later when Rodney Melvin and Billy Drake made contact on the front stretch, with both cars making contact with the wall and then spinning. Melvin's night ended and Drake was able to restart from the rear of the field. There were a couple of more early cautions for debris, before the final fifteen laps were run caution free. Kevin Weaver put together a strong run and finished fourth. The 2003 U.M.P. Late Model Track Champion at I-55 Raceway Ed Dixon rounded out the top five. Tom Ratajczyk picked up what may have been the biggest win of his career in the U.M.P. Modified division. Ratajczyk and Scott Weber battled side by side for the lead for the first fourteen laps. After Weber had mechanical problems, Ratajczyk held off Jeff Leka for the final six laps and took the win. Bobby Martintoni moved past Leka with just two laps remaining and took second. Dennis Richards came home fourth and the 2003 U.M.P. Modified Track Champion at I-55 Raceway, Ray Walsh, took fifth. Scott Stuppy claimed the AARA Sportsman feature. Stuppy held of Troy Naeger for the win. Steve Maisel, making his first appearance of the 2003 at I-55 Raceway was third. The 2003 AARA Sportsman Track Champion, Paul Bauman was fourth. I-55 Raceway Crowns Four New Track Champions!Pevely, MO (September 6, 2003) It was Championship Night at I-55 Raceway and the Champions were crowned in all four divisions. In the U.M.P. Late Model division, Ed Dixon started the night with a twenty-nine point lead over Tim Ratajczyk who was just six points ahead of Mark Oller who was in third. As the green flag dropped on the main event, Tim Ratajczyk took the early from the outside of the front row. Pole sitter Kevin Gundaker raced past Ratajczyk going down the back-stretch on lap three and took over the top spot. Ed Dixon and Mark Oller moved in the third and fourth spot and began a four car battle for the lead. Gundaker held on to the lead as he fought off challenges from Ratajczyk and Dixon. Oller remained in fourth but was right in the mix with the leaders. Smoke began to pour from Gundaker's car and on lap seventeen his night ended as he rolled to a stop in turn two. This caution set up a great battle to the finish between Dixon, Ratajczyk and Oller. All three took turns leading the event in the final eight laps but it was Ratajczyk taking the checkered flag first, with Oller second and Dixon third. Bert Cheatham made his first appearance in years at I-55 Raceway and made a strong showing as he took fourth. Danny Haynes rounded out the top five. Dixon's third place finish was good enough as he is the 2003 I-55 Raceway U.M.P. Late Model Track Champion. Ray Walsh had already secured the Championship in the U.M.P. Modified division before the night's action even started. Walsh's strong and consistant runs all season gave him a comfortable lead in the track points coming into the night's racing. The feature event in the U.M.P. Modifieds provided another great battle for the lead. Leon Rakers took command of the race early on. It didn't take long for last year's track champion Scott Weber and this year's track champion Ray Walsh to move in on Rakers and begin a good three-way battle for the lead. But on lap twelve Rakers suffered a flat right rear and began sliding back quickly through the field. The red flag flew on the next lap for an incident in turn four that sent Loren Knox into a slow roll over. Knox was uninjured and his car didn't appear to be damaged and he continued to race after the restart. On the restart, Scott Weber pulled away and went on to a comfortable win with Ray Walsh taking the second spot. Bobby Bittle continued his strong season as he came home third. Jerry Grither had one of his best outings of the season and took fourth. Tom Ratajczyk completed the top five. In the AARA Sportsman division, Scott Stuppy came in the night's action with a twenty-six point lead over Paul Bauman. With the AARA Sportsman feature lined up by the point standings, Stuppy and Bauman started the event side-by-side on the front row. But that also put a long list of strong competitors directly behind them. Bauman jumped out the early lead served up a strong message that he was going to be the one to beat as he pulled out to a big lead. Stuppy fell into the clutches of the other strong competitors as seven different cars were battling for the second spot. After a couple of late race cautions, in was last year's champion Paul Belken took over the second spot and battled hard with Bauman for the lead in the final laps. But in the end it was Bauman taking the win. Even with the win, he need Stuppy to finish seventh or worse for him to win the championship and unfortunately for Stuppy, seventh place is where he finished. Bauman won the championship by a mere two points over Stuppy. Following Belken across the line in third place was Todd McGraw. Darren Holland took fourth and Ricky Horton was fifth. A close battle in the AARA Wannabeez division Season Championship saw Pat Brewer with an eleven point lead over Dave Heinrichs and a seventeen point lead over third place Joe Gruhala as the night began. In the main event, it was Gary Price taking the win, with Robbie Hoffman second and Don Hoffman third. Pat Brewer finished sixth and secured the championship over Joe Gruhala who was seventh. Mechanical problems prevented Heinrichs from starting the main event. AARA Sportsman - 29 Entries Heat 2: Heat 3: Dash: Semi: Feature: U.M.P. Late Models - 18 Entries Heat 2: Dash: Feature: U.M.P. Korte, Weber, Horton & Mooney grab wins at I-55 Raceway!
It was Korte who took the spotlight as he took the lead on the opening lap of the twenty-five lap main event. Korte, who started on the outside of the front row along side Ed Dixon, used the cushion along the top to establish a big lead early. Dixon grabbed the second spot and moved to the top to chase Korte, but he had to contend with Justin Allgaier who moved up to battle with him for the second spot. The action was slowed on the eleventh circuit when Billy Laycock got turned around coming out of turn four. Korte jumped out to a comfortable lead again on the restart, leaving Dixon to battle with Allgaier for second. But the green was only out for a couple of laps before a spin in turn one by Rich Lawson slowed the pace. On the final restart Dixon made a brief challenge for the lead on the low side, but Korte powered back past Dixon using the high side. Korte went on to take the victory. Dixon held of Allgaier for second. Marc McClintock continues to run strong since taking over the Chuck Baird entry a few weeks ago as he finished fourth. Brian Wolfmeier brought home the Bargetzi Racing owned machine in the fifth spot. Scott Weber has put on some impressive performances in the U.M.P. Modified division throughout the past few years, but this may have been his most spectacular performance yet. Weber had to start twenty-first in the feature event after mechanical problems forced him to miss his qualifying heat and then he took a third place finish in the semi-feature. Weber rocketed through an strong field of modifieds and took the lead from Rich Whaley on lap thirteen. Weber then pulled away to a comfortable win. Eric Mabery made a last lap pass on Whaley to take the second spot. Brian Worley followed Whaley across the line to take fourth and Ray Walsh continues his march to the track championship in the modified division with his fifth place finish. The AARA Sportsman division kept the fans on their feet as Ricky Horton and Paul Belken battled side-by-side the entire fifteen laps of the main event. Meanwhile, Scott Stuppy, Darren Holland and Bob Prince battled two and three wide the entire race for the third spot. Horton earned his second victory of the season as he held off Belken. Stuppy edged out Holland and Prince for third, with Holland taking fourth and Prince fifth.

Late Model feature win at I-55 Raceway. Oller started deep in the field and worked his way through heavy traffic and was battling with early leader Ed Dixon when the first caution came out on lap eleven for a single car spin in turn four. On the restart Oller and Dixon battled side-by-side for the next five laps with Oller using the low side and Dixon racing around the top. But on lap sixteen Dixon got into the front stretch wall and the car rode the wall all the way down the front stretch before coming to a stop just before turn one bringing out the second caution. Dixon was able to restart but had to go to the back of the field on the restart. On the next restart Brian Wolfmeier continued his great run as he stayed glued to the back bumper of Oller as they paced the field around the bottom of the track with Tim Ratajczyk attempting to mount a challenge using the high side. Ratajczyk got into the outside wall on the backstretch on lap nineteen and then his car darted across the track towards the low side. Kevin Gundaker was unable to avoid Ratajczyk's car as Gundaker's right front drove up and over the left front of Ratajczyk. Gundaker's car came back down on all four wheels and he continued on. Mark McClintock then spun to avoid heavy contact with Ratajczyk. Paul Belken had a separate accident on the same lap and he climbed the turn one wall and nearly went upside down but he was able to keep it from going over and came to rest in turn two. Belken and Ratajczyk's night would be over after the two incidents. Oller held off the challenges of Wolfmeier for the final few circuits and picked up the win. Gundaker's car seemed unaffected by the earlier contact with Ratajczyk as he raced hard for the lead in the final stages and took third place. Kyle Steffens ran near the front all race long and came home fourth. Danny Haynes rounded out the top five. There were two feature events in the U.M.P. Modified division, the first being a makeup feature from two weeks ago after rain ended the program early. Dennis Richards paced all twenty laps of the first feature, fending off a host of competitors. Bobby Bittle was able to pull along side Richards on almost every lap but was unable to make the pass and settled for second. Brent Thompson and Ray Walsh were also keeping the battle for the lead tight as they fought lap after lap for the win but settled for third and fourth respectively. Leon Rakers came home fifth. The night's regularly scheduled U.M.P. Modified feature went to Bobby Bittle as he simply dominated the event. Point leader Ray Walsh battled lap after lap with Brian Wolfmeier for second place with Walsh taking the spot. Brent Thompson continued his good night as he came home fourth. Tom Ratajczyk took fifth. Scott Weber took over the reigns of the Jaenke Racing entry tonight after his own car was severly damaged the night before at another racetrack and came from near the back to finish sixth. Paul Belken returned to his championship form of season's past and dominated the night in the AARA Sportsman division. Belken pulled away to a comfortable lead and left everyone to battle for second. Scott Stuppy made a late race pass on Todd McGraw to claim second. Paul Bauman took fourth and David Bardin was fifth. Pat Brewer swept both AARA Wannabee features.

Oller moved past McClintock for the lead on lap eleven with Weaver following him past on the next lap. Oller and Weaver pulled away and made it a two car battle until the caution came out again on lap twenty-one. On the restart it was once again a two car battle for the win between Oller and Weaver. Justin Allgaier & Tim Montgomery take M&M Night of Stars Victories!Pevely, MO (July 30th, 2003) It was huge night at I-55 Raceway as eight NASCAR stars gathered to help raise money for Kyle & Pattie Petty's Victory Junction Gang Camp. The 2nd Annual M&M Night of Stars brought in NASCAR drivers Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Carl Edwards, Rick Crawford, Jason Keller and Kyle Petty. The eight drivers signed autographs before the races and then all eight buckled into eight UMP/IMCA type Dirt Works Modifieds for a special ten lap match race. NASCAR Craftsman Truck ace Rick Crawford worked his way around Kyle Petty on lap four and then held off track co-owner Ken Schrader for the win. It was Crawford's first time to race any type of car and dirt and he appeared to be a natural, by making smooth fast laps while the other seven drivers battled side by side. Kevin Harvick found trouble on the final lap as he got into the outside wall in turn three. Harvick simply stated that it was his first time on dirt and that he was a terrible dirt driver. Three of the NASCAR drivers also buckled up to compete with forty-one other UMP Late Model drivers in the UMP Challenge of Champions Series event. Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader and Carl Edwards took their best shot at the dirt professionals. But it was seventeen year old Justin Allgaier who stole the show in the UMP Late Model division. Allgaier put on a dominating performance by leading all thirty laps of the main event and went basically unchallenged for the lead. The twenty-six laps of the event went caution free and Allgaier was able to put many good cars a lap down. Ken Schrader gave chase to Allgaier but could never get close enough to mount a serious challenge. The big battle was for the third position, as four drivers battled for almost the entire thirty laps for it. Randy Korte, Ed Dixon, Terry English and Tony Stewart were slicing through traffic battling side by side for the position. On the final lap entering turn one, Tony Stewart jumped the cushion and got into the turn one wall hard, the car climbed the wall and did a complete barrel roll flip back into traffic and collected Ed Dixon, Brian Collins and Dave Jumper. Stewart was not injured and Dixon was the only car able to restart. On the final restart, Allgaier held of the challenge of Schrader for the one lap sprint to the checkered flag and picked up the biggest win of his young career. Randy Korte out-battled Terry English to pick up the third position. Ed Dixon followed English across the line in fifth place. Joey Montgomery win wasn't a popular one with the fans in the winged sprint car division. Danny Smith led the first twenty-four laps of the twenty-five lap event. However, Montgomery made a challenge for the lead through turn four on the final lap and the two made contact, sending Smith flipping into the front straight wall and fence. Montgomery crossed the finish line taking the checkered flag. Jarrod Hull was credited with second place, Jan Howard third, Jim Moughan fourth and Dale Howard was fifth. The event was marred with multiple crashes. Damon Kronk was the first to crash as he made contact with another car causing him to crash hard into the inside retaining wall on the front stretch. Then Bryan Matthews and Lowe Cannell got together and crashed into the wall on the front stretch just one lap later. On lap twelve, Tommy Worley had the most violent crash as he got into the turn one wall and flipped several times as he was hit by another car. Worley's car then burst into flames. A quick responding fire crew had the fire out within seconds and Worley climbed from the car uninjured.

Tim Ratajczk puts on a Dominating Performance in UMP Late ModelsPevely, MO (July 26, 2003) Tim Ratajczyk put on a dominating performance by leading all twenty-five laps to take the victory in the U.M.P. Late Model main event. Ratajczyk started on the outside of the front row along side pole sitter Brent Kreke. Ratajczyk used high side and pulled away to a comfortable lead early on. Kevin Gundaker moved past Kreke on lap five to take second but could never get close enough to challenge Ratajczyk for the lead. Kyle Steffens moved up through the field to claim the third spot. Paul Belken had his best outing of his rookie season in the late model to finish fourth. Brian Wolfmeier completed the top five. Second place point contender Ed Dixon had problems after making contact with Kevin Gundaker in the Dash and started at the rear of the feature and nursed his car home to a fourteenth place finish.Brent Thompson won his first U.M.P. Modified feature of the season at I-55 Raceway. Thompson also started on the outside of the front row and beat pole sitter Ray Walsh to the first turn on top side. Walsh stayed glued to Thompson rear bumper early on the event until a caution flew on lap six. On the restart, Walsh attempted to make the pass on Thompson as he went low into turn one and slid to the top in front of Thompson. Walsh easily cleared Thompson but caught the outside wall in turn two allowing Thompson to pull along side but the two made contact, which resulted in a flat tire and front suspension damage on Walsh's car and ended his night. On the restart, it appeared Thompson was going to go on to an easy victory as he opened up a full straight away lead on the rest of the field. But Brian Worley worked his way into second place and proceeded to chase down Thompson as the two worked lapped traffic. Worley attempted a couple of passes for the lead using the low side, but couldn't get past Thompson for the lead and settled for second. Doug Wood had a solid run to finish third. Jim Shereck worked his way up from the thirteenth starting position to finish fourth. Jerry Grither made his first appearance of the season at I-55 Raceway and came home fifth. Scott Weber's run of bad luck continued at I-55 Raceway as he was hit in the head by a foreign object during the Dash causing him to spin into the inside wall going into turn three. The blow left a five inch crack in Weber's helmet. Weber did compete in the feature event, but suffered a flat tire and did not finish. Second place points contender Bobby Bittle blew an engine in hot laps and did not compete in any of the racing events. Ricky Horton also broke his run of bad luck and captured his first AARA Sportsman victory of the season. Horton moved past Paul Bauman on lap three and went on claim the win. Bauman held off a late charge by Scott Stuppy to take second. Paul Belken came home fourth and Ron Imm, Jr. was fifth.
