Murray wraps up second national I.M.C.A. crown;
Texans Fletcher, Pritchett, Jones all win first titles

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 2) - David Murray Jr. has won his second national I.M.C.A. title, while three Texas drivers are first-time champions.
From Oberlin, Kan., Murray won 34 feature races in capturing the 2003 Modified crown.
The all-time wins leader in the division with 274 checkers, Murray was also national champion in 2001. He added his fifth career Dirt Works Central Regional prize this season as well.
Champions hailing from the Lone Star State are Russ Fletcher of Abilene in the Sprint Cars, Duain Pritchett of Com-bine in the Stock Cars and Randell Jones of Weatherford in the Hobby Stocks.
Fletcher scored his 18th win in just 20 starts Saturday at 281 Speedway to overtake Dustin Lindquist for the Sprint Car title. Sixteen of Fletcher's wins came in fields of at least 10 cars and his lowest non-winning finishes were both seconds.
Lindquist, from Floodwood, Minn., is national runner-up for the second straight year.
Leader of the points race from start to finish, Pritchett capped a 30-win campaign while also topping the Destroyer Chassis Southern Region standings for the second time in three years. 2003 is the first year Stock Car standings were based on the 30 best finishes and Pritchett was the only driver in the class to reach the 1,200 point mark.
Just a year removed from national rookie of the year honors, Jones won 27 features. He and Pritchett are the first Texas drivers to earn national I.M.C.A. championships in their respective divisions.
Henry Witt Jr. of Waco, Texas, runner-up in the national Modified points chase, extended his record with a sixth straight Dirt Works South Central Region title. Sean Lias of Westfield, Pa., topped the Dirt Works Northeastern Region point standings for the second straight year, and fifth overall, and Ricky Stephan of South Sioux City, Neb., was cham-pion of the Dirt Works North Central Region for the second time since 2001.
First-time regional kings are Robert Miller of Gardnerville, Nev., in the D&M Performance Western Region, Robert Gallegos of Cory, Colo., in the Dirt Works Mountain Region and Chris Smith of Castleberry, Ala., in the Clausen Racing Gulf Coast Region.
Witt's 29 wins this year give him 172 over the course of his I.M.C.A. career. Lias had 23 wins, boosting his career total to 136.
Stephan won seven races to prevail in the closest regional duel, edging Jeff Stephens of Dow City, Iowa.
Miller had a career-best season with 33 wins, 27 of them coming in fields of at least 10 cars. The veteran Gallegos collected 11 checkers, 10 in full fields, also the best in his I.M.C.A. career. Smith followed friend Greg Hopkins as Gulf Coast champ, winning five times.
Jeff Anderson of Atlantic, Iowa, paced the SCS Fabricating Northern Stock Car Region standings for the second time in three seasons, winning 21 races. Trailing only Pritchett nationally this year, Anderson leads the class with 224 career victories.
Final points races of the season for the Modifieds, Sprint Cars, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks were Sunday, Sept. 28. Tracks have until Oct. 31 to notify the I.M.C.A. home office about any corrections before points become official.
Justin Wells of Aurora, Mo., won the national Late Model championship; final points races of 2003 in that class were held Aug. 24.
All champions and top rookie drivers will be honored during the national I.M.C.A. awards banquet on Nov. 29 in Des Moines.

Another Egbert sets standard for I.M.C.A Modified rookies

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 2) - P.J. Egbert has matched the last-season accomplishment of cousin G.W. Egbert IV in taking na-tional Modified and Dirt Works South Central Region rookie honors.
From Copperas Cove, Texas, Egbert won 10 feature races in leading the points race for first-year drivers in the I.M.C.A. class. He was fourth overall in the region and 14th nationally.
Darin Duffy of Hazleton scooped up national Late Model and Deery Brothers Summer Series rookie honors. Scott Winters of Butterfield, Minn., topped standings for first-year Sprint Car drivers.
Mark Zorn of Russell, Kan., was national and SCS Fabricating Northern Region rookie of the year in the Stock Car division. Eunice, N.M.'s Chris Meyers rates as the top Hobby Stock rookie.
Duffy won three times during the weekly point season and collected his first Deery victory at Super Nationals. Win-ters, son of 2000 national champion Kent Winters, scored six winged feature wins.
Zorn was a 20-time visitor to the winner's circle, 13 of those checkers coming in fields of at least 10 cars. Meyers fashioned a 16-victory season, the Texas I.M.C.A. Nationals main event being among his dozen full-feature wins.
Joining Egbert as regional Modified rookies of the year were Larry Hood of Bakersfield, Calif., in the D&M Perform-ance Western Region; Mike Niksch of Paonia, Colo., in the Dirt Works Mountain Region; Brian Edel of Oskaloosa in the Dirt Works North Central Region; Brice Riley of Indianola, Neb., in the Dirt Works Central Region; Dale Caswell of West Monroe, N.Y., in the Dirt Works Northeastern Region; and Ansel Reed of Pace, Fla., in the Clausen Racing Gulf Coast Region.
Caswell took three checkers while Hood and Edel both won twice. Niksch and Riley each had a pair of top-five fin-ishes.
Reed won five times and was runner-up to champion Chris Smith in the Gulf Coast standings.
Hood was fifth in his region, Caswell eighth and Niksch and Edel both 10th.
Shannon Parsons of Waco, Texas, is rookie of the year in the Destroyer Chassis Southern Stock Car Region. He had six feature wins to place eighth in the region and 20th nationally.
Tracks have until Oct. 31 to notify I.M.C.A. about corrections to race results before 2003 point standings become official.

Bandstra masters first annual Stocksville Nationals

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Sept. 27) - The first annual Stocksville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway was the big-time setting for Brandon Bandstra's first feature victory.
Bandstra started Saturday night's 28-car main event from the third spot, took the point in the early going and then ran away from everybody on the big half-mile oval.
A late caution put the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Car field on Bandstra's back bumper for a green-white-checkered finish, but the Lynnville charger pulled away to the $1,250 win by a comfortable margin over Mike Robinson of Moravia and Bobby Greiner Jr. and Lorne Parks, both of Ottumwa.
Brian Blessington of Breda won his "B" race, started the feature from 17th and wound up fifth.
Bandstra had gone without a win through his first 17 sanctioned starts, all at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, this season.
Jefferson's Dave Baugh and Robinson made up the front row for the 20-lap main. Robinson was the initial leader, giving way to Bandstra and then chasing him to the checkers.
Fourth-starting Luke Veren of Haverhill figured in the early mix before he was sidelined with a flat tire. Jeff Anderson of Atlantic, another "B" winner, moved up 15 spots and was running in the top four when he was sidelined by mechanical problems.
Improving 13 places to finish mid-pack were Kevin Booy of Oskaloosa, John Hunnel of Des Moines, Chris Ullrich of Kiron and Clayton Hamm of Eldon. Mike McClure of Bloomfield advanced 11 spots from start to finish.
Heat race winners were Veren, Bandstra, Dale Woodard of Storm Lake, Greiner, Parks, Howard Gordon Jr. of Oskaloosa, Baugh and Robinson.

Deery feature win to Aikey, series title to Burgtorf

FARLEY, Iowa (Sept. 11) - Jeff Aikey and Mark Burgtorf both went home winners Thursday night.
Aikey won the season-ending Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Farley Speedway, taking the lead on a lap 20 re-start and charging ahead to his 44th I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Model tour victory.
Burgtorf, meanwhile, forged a fourth-place finish from his 18th starting spot in the Yankee Dirt Track Classic show to add the 2003 series championship to crowns won in 1998 and 2001.
Pole starter Gary Russell ended in second and Ray Guss Jr., who started 22nd, was third. Fifth went to Gary Crawford and Boone McLaughlin, who began the night just four points behind Burgtorf, ran sixth.
Gary Webb took the initial green from outside the front row and led the first 19 laps before exiting with mechanical problems. Aikey slipped past Russell on the re-start and led the final 30 circuits, taking the checkers a couple lapped cars in front of Russell.
Guss, winner of the Deery race at Farley last September, and Burgtorf shunned the middle of the track for a lower line, patiently picking off cars to work through the pack. Burgtorf passed Rob Toland and Darrel DeFrance to close on McLaughlin in lap 38, passing his closest points challenger two laps later.
Heat winners were Crawford, Aikey, McLaughlin and Steve Borts. Burtgorf won the "B" race that also sent Guss, Greg Kastli and Lonnie Bailey to the main event; Kelly Tapper topped the other "B."
Kastli was only eight points out of a tie for first going into the finale, improving 14 places to finish 10th. Russell, sev-enth-place runner DeFrance and Bailey also started the finale with mathematical chances of winning the series champion-ship.
Darin Duffy wrapped up series rookie of the year honors by taking the track for his heat. He had a short night, how-ever, after his engine exploded and caught fire during that race.
Aikey was the only three-time winner in the series this year. Curt Martin won two of the 11 events.

Six drivers have shot at title as Deery Series ends at Farley

FARLEY, Iowa - Every racer starts the season with hopes of winning a championship.
Five months after the first green flag, six drivers are still in contention for the Deery Brothers Summer Series crown.
The 11th and final event in the 2003 tour for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models is Thursday, Sept. 11, during the Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Farley Speedway.
Mark Burgtorf takes a four point lead to Farley, so he's in the driver's seat literally and figuratively. The Quincy, Ill., veteran already owns two series championships, in 1998 and 2001, but a rare 23rd place finish after suffering a flat tire on Labor Day at Super Nationals left the door ajar for five other series regulars.
No doubt Boone McLaughlin of Mediapolis, Greg Kastli of Waterloo, Lonnie Bailey of Quincy, Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown and Gary Russell of Biggsville, Ill., have done the math and know what has to transpire for them to land what would be their first career series title.
Fourth-place runs in two of the last three races have the steady McLaughlin right behind Burgtorf. Kastli is just eight points off the pace, despite not qualifying for the opening night feature back in April.
Bailey trails Burgtorf by 20, while DeFrance is 22 back and Russell is 28 points out of first.
Winning a Deery Series feature is worth 50 points, with two points less for each position down to 17th; 16 points are given for 18th on back. Non-qualifiers get 10 points.
The series tiebreaker is based on best finishes in feature races, starting with wins and working down until one driver has the edge.
Pit gates at Farley open at 4 p.m. Thursday. Hot laps are at 6 p.m. and racing is at 6:30 p.m.

Heartbreak for Hejna leads to Logue's fifth Super Nationals title

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 6) - The joy John Logue felt after winning his fifth I.M.C.A. Speedway Motors Super Nationals championship was tempered by his disappointment that Al Hejna didn't win his first.
Hejna led all but the last lap of Saturday night's Modified feature, being relegated to third after a broken axle allowed Logue and Tony Hofbauer by on the last turn.
"We got lucky. Al had the race won and he deserved it," said Logue, who matched Steve Jackson's record of five Super Nationals crowns. "We were fast all week but I thought I had a fourth-place car."
Terry Belcher Jr. rounded out the top four in the final race of the 21st annual event.
First-time Super Nationals champions crowned earlier in the evening were Randy Brands in the Stock Cars and Andy Boeckman in the Hobby Stocks.
David Murray Jr. topped the Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial Race of Champions for Modifieds and Ryan Rose led the way to the finish in the Sunoco Race Fuels Race of Champions for Stock Cars.
Hejna started at the front of the middle row and took charge at the start of the 40-lapper. Three cautions came out in the early going; 2002 runner-up Brian Mullen was running third when he rubbed the front wall and exited for the pits on lap 13.
Hofbauer and Logue continued the pursuit, swapping the second spot several times before both capitalized on Hejna's misfortune.
Qualifying for the feature 15 consecutive years, Logue also won Modified titles at Super Nationals in 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2001. Jackson's championships came in the Stock Car class.
Former Super Nationals champions Brian Blessington and Jeff Anderson were on the front row for the start of the Stock feature, but both were involved in a multi-car tangle on the opening lap and neither would be a factor in the race.
Brands took the lead from pole starter Jonathan Snyder on the 13th of 30 circuits.
Dave Baugh took over second with 10 laps to go. Jeremy Christians and Travis Evans completed the top four.
The race was halted on lap 17 when Wyatt Olson spun and ended up on his roof going into turn three. He was not hurt.
Boeckman and Bill Richards crossed the line in a virtual dead heat the second time around the track, but the story was all Boeckman after that. He was a straightaway ahead of Randy Embrey before a mid-way caution.
Pulling away on the re-start, Boeckman had two lapped cars and plenty of real estate between his car and Bill Atcheson's at the finish. Embrey was third and Orville Gilbert fourth.
Murray caught Kevin Larkins for the lead with three laps left in the Efkamp contest. The Sunoco race was never close, Rose leading from flag to flag.
Darin Duffy won the Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models on opening night Monday. First place in the Jackpot Junction Sprint Car Tour feature on Tuesday went to Russ Fletcher, who repeated his winning ways from a year ago. Dustin Lindquist wrapped up the tour title with his third-place finish.
A total of 714 cars were in the pits for Super Nationals, including new record car counts of 157 in the Stocks and 144 in the Hobbies.

Point additions at 34 change champ, plus national & local standings

VINTON, Iowa (Aug. 28) - Additions made to point standings at 34 Raceway have resulted in a different track champion, as well as a change in the unofficial national top 20 point standings released Monday for the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Model division.
Boone McLaughlin of Mediapolis received three more points, for his previously unreported heat race win at the West Burlington track on opening night April 26. That was enough to give him the track title by one point over Gary Russell of Biggsville, Ill.
National Late Model standings are based on drivers' best 15 feature finishes throughout the season, which ended Sunday. A 40-point bonus "win" awarded to track champions replaces the lowest nightly score from those 15 races. Local track - but not national - standings include points awarded to top three heat race finishers.
Switching the bonus given for the track title gives McLaughlin another eight points and pushes him up one spot nationally, to 18th. Russell lost four points and dropped a notch to 16th.
Other drivers affected by that addition and subtraction were Greg Kastli of Waterloo, up one place to 15th, and Chuck Mayerhofer of Dixon, down one to 19th.
Rob Toland of Hillsdale, Ill., and Jeff Laue of Burlington both got another five points for nights they were unable to start the feature at 34 Raceway. The new tabulation didn't affect Toland, who remains third nationally and sixth in track standings.
Laue, however, improves from 12th to 11th in standings at 34.
Tracks sanctioning their Late Model class have until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 to notify I.M.C.A. about corrections in weekly race results before point standings become official.

Early entry numbers up for Sept. 1-6 Super Nationals at Boone

BOONE, Iowa (Aug. 25) - Expect comfortably snug situations in the pits, at the upcoming I.M.C.A. Speed-way Mo-tors Super Nationals.
The 21st annual event, again billed as America's Racin' Vacation, runs Monday through Saturday, Sept. 1-6 at the Boone Speedway.
Pre-registrations for the Modified, Stock Car and Hobby Stock divisions all are up from this time a year ago. While those numbers aren't a concrete guarantee of new records for any class, they generally portend more than healthy car counts.
With opening night less than two weeks away, 96 Modified drivers, 40 Stock Car drivers and 24 Hobby Stock drivers had mailed in their pre-registration and en-try fees. Those figures are up from 89, 34 and 18, re-spectively, from the same time last year.
All-time bests of 154 Stocks and 123 Hobbies com-peted at Super Nationals last year. The total car count was 716, down just nine from the record 725 in 2001.
"Calls have been rolling in for the last few weeks and we have been hearing from racers all across the country who are coming to Boone," I.M.C.A. Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. "2003 is gonna' be a good one."
Late Model drivers will sign in Monday for the Deery Brothers Summer Series race; Sprint Car competitors register on Tuesday, for the final Jackpot Junction Tour event.
Holley Performance Products will award commemo-rative hats and decals to heat race winners in all five di-visions.
The daily schedule for Super Nationals is virtually identical to last year. Along with the Deery Series, both the Stocks and Hobbies begin qualifying on Monday.
Tuesday's card has the second half of the Hobby Stock grid determined. Stocks continue qualifying and all 10 spots in the Sunoco Race Fuels Race of Champi-ons will be set.
The Stock Car field is completed, and Modified quali-fying roars underway on Wednesday. Winners from 40 heats will advance to one of two feature races, with the top four from each advancing to Saturday's main event.
Programs Thursday and Friday follow the same Modi-fied format, with five Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial Race of Champions heats added each night.
The final nine cars are added to the Modified field on Saturday as America's Racin' Vacation concludes with the Sunoco and Efkamp races, and the Hobby Stock, Stock Car and Modified main events.
Winners of the Modified and Late Model features both earn $2,000. First-place finishes in the Stock Car, Sprint Car and Dirt Works Race of Champions each are worth $1,000, with drivers getting another $100 for every lap they lead in the Efkamp race. The Hobby Stock champion and Sunoco winner each earn $500.
Every Modified driver who races Wednesday, Thurs-day, Friday and Saturday nights is guaranteed $300 against their winnings, while every Stock Car driver who races Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is guaranteed $200. Total purse for the 2002 Super Nationals was $223,600.
Approximately $50,000 in contingency awards will be given to Super Nationals driver by I.M.C.A. sponsors.
Hot laps are at 4 p.m. and racing starts at 5 p.m. each day Monday through Friday. Racing starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The grandstand opens at 3 p.m. Monday through Fri-day and at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lubbock Motor Speedway hosts 10th Labor Day Nationals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Lubbock Motor Speedway hosts the 10th annual A/C Delco Labor Day Nationals Aug. 29-31, with a $4,000 prize waiting for the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified feature winner.
The 40-lap feature will start 24 cars and qualifying for the main event pays a minimum of $750.
Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 7:15 p.m. and racing starts at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and again Sun-day night.
The draw closes at 7:45 p.m. each evening and drivers who arrive after that time, or who don't draw, will start scratch.
Car count will determine the number of heats, with winners advancing to nightly qualifying features. All other drivers go to "B" mains.
The top five finishers in Friday and Saturday features qualify for Sunday's big show. Sixth through 10th on Fri-day and Saturday advance to the "B" race on Sunday, and the top 14 cars in that race move on to the main event.

With a little help from his friends, Wells wins national I.M.C.A. Late Model crown

AURORA, Mo. (Aug. 25) - How many new best friends did Justin Wells have at the track Saturday night?
He counted about 10 of them.
Wells, from Aurora, Mo., wrapped up the national I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Model championship with feature wins Saturday at Joplin 66 Speedway and Sunday at Monett Speedway.
Just one point ahead of Jewell, Iowa's Mike Smith going into the final weekendof the season, Wells was involved in a heat race crash at Joplin that caused front end damage substantial enough to make him wonder if he'd even be able to start the main event.
"At first I figured everything I worked for was gone," he said. "There comes a time when you wonder how many buddies you have at the track, and I had about 10 of them. They left their own cars to help put mine back together and got done just in time for the feature."
Completing the storybook ending, Wells won that night and the next to become the first Missouri driver to win an I.M.C.A. national crown since Bill Utz captured the 1977 Sprint Car title.
Smith ended the season in second, two points back. Completing the top five were Rob Toland of Hillsdale, Ill., defending champion Todd Cooney of Des Moines and Bill Street of Joplin, Mo.
Runner-up to Toland in 2001 and to Cooney last year, Wells had just one finish outside the top five all year, leading all drivers in the division with 11 feature wins in just 26 starts.
Piloting a new James Ince car, he took the track title at Monett Speedway in the process.
"I didn't think I'd be in contention this year. I thought it would take a year or so to get things lined out," he said. "My theory on points has always been that if you do the best you can, they'll take care of themselves, but in August we hit a dry spell where it seemed like the best we could do was thirds. I went back to having a better attitude and things turned around."
Wells dedicated the title to his father and number one fan Gary, who died of cancer in March of 2002.
"He lived for racing. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't be doing this," Wells said. "This championship is for him."
Justin is a business partner with fellow Late Model driver Ken Essary, who was also Gary's best friend.
"Ken is like a second father to me. I don't know if I'd be racing without Ken and his wife Linna," Wells said.
Smith, also second in the 2000 national points race behind Jason Friesen, was track champion at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines and runner-up to Cooney at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa.
He won nine times and had another 11 top-five showings in 30 starts.
Toland was track champion at Davenport Speedway and a nine-time winner this season, with another dozen top five's in 31 outings.
Cooney totalled six wins and 17 more top five finishes in 30 weekly shows.
Street topped the Joplin 66 Speedway points. He finished with five wins and 17 more top five's in 26 races.
Jason Humphrey of Phillips, Neb., was the only driver in the division winning multiple track titles, at Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Neb., and in the Friesen Chevrolet Challenge Series.
Humphrey's nine feature wins gave him the tie-breaker edge ahead of Mark Burgtorf, champion at his hometown Quincy, Ill., Raceway.
Completing the roll call of track champions were Gary Russell of Biggsville, Ill., at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa; Greg Kastli of Waterloo, Iowa, at the Independence, Iowa, Motor Speedway; and Terry Neal of Ely, Iowa, at Jackson County Speedway in Maquoketa, Iowa.
National standings are based on drivers' best 15 feature finishes throughout the season. A 40-point bonus "win" is awarded for each of as many as two local track titles.
Tracks have until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 to notify I.M.C.A. about any corrections in weekly race results before point standings become official.

National contender Mike Smith has already earned the track title at Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines, which wrapped up its regular season in late July.

Erb wins Pepsi USA Nationals Deery at 34 Raceway

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (Aug. 14) - Dennis Erb Jr. drove a borrowed car to the $10,000 victory in Thursday night's Pepsi USA Nationals/Susan Pallister Memorial at 34 Raceway.
The Carpentersville, Ill., pilot scored his first career Deery Brothers Summer Series win in the process, taking the lead after a re-start on the 77th circuit and staying at the front to the end of the 100-lapper.
Gary Russell posted the fast time in qualifying for the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models on Wednesday and finished second in the feature. 2002 race winner Curt Martin, pole starter Boone McLaughlin and Rob Toland rounded out the top five.
Only two cautions slowed the main event and 21 of the 26 cars that started it were still on the track when the checkered flag came out.
Much of the race was a four-way battle between Erb, Russell, Martin and McLaughlin on a surface that stayed racy from top to bottom.
McLaughlin set the fast pace the first 37 circuits before giving way to Russell. Erb, who started outside the second row, would catch Russell 40 laps later and go on to win by a comfortable margin.
Defending series champ Terry Schlipman won a "B" race and went on to finish sixth in the feature. Current points leader Mark Burgtorf was 12th.
Greg Kastli finished eighth, moving up 16 places from his starting spot.
Mike Smith was 10th and won the drawing for a set of Brodix cylinder heads. A second set, awarded to a non-qualifier, went to Jay Johnson.
Winners of Wednesday heat races were McLaughlin, Ray Guss Jr., Toland, Martin and Tommy Elston. Bill Tuckwell topped Thursday's second "B" qualifier.
Sixty cars vied for berths in the main event, the highest car count for any of the first nine series events held so far this season.

Aikey aces Deery feature at Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 12) - Once he got to the front, there was no catching Jeff Aikey in Tuesday night's Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway.
Aikey started eighth in the State Fair show for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models and worked his way ahead to duel with fellow heavyweights Boone McLaughlin, Ray Guss Jr. and Joe Kosiski.
Just after the mid-way point of the 35-lapper, successive circuits saw Guss, Kosiski and then Aikey racing at the point.
Dodging through lapped traffic, Aikey pulled away to win handily ahead of Kosiski, Guss, McLaughin and Chris Smyser. The victory was his second of the season, his fourth at Des Moines and series career-leading 43rd.
The race ran without caution and 24 of the 27 cars that took the green flag were still on the track when the checkers came out.
McLaughlin and Guss started on the front row; Guss set the fast pace, with McLaughlin close behind, for most of the first 15 times around the half-mile track.
McLaughlin's top four showing pushed him into second in the series point standings.
Heat winners were Greg Kastli, Darrel DeFrance, Guss, Smyser and Kosiski. Mike Smith and points leader Mark Burgtorf won "B" features.
Burgtorf managed a 12th place finish while Smith exited with steering problems after an early tangle.
Forty-four Late Models were on hand Tuesday night, the highest car count since the April 12 season opener at 34 Raceway in West Burlington drew 48.

New Ark-La-Tex Speedway set for Saturday opener

VIVIAN, La. - A project that took more than two years to complete will be realized Saturday evening, with opening night at the new Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian.
Promoter and owner Gene Boyter, along with his father Sonny, have done much of the work in getting the quarter-mile semi-banked clay oval built and ready for the first races Aug. 9.
I.M.C.A. will sanction the Stock Car division at Ark-La-Tex, located some 25 miles north of Shreveport and within hailing distance of both the Texas and Arkansas state lines. This weekend's race will be the first ever for the class in Louisiana. Non-sanctioned classes include the modifieds, limited modifieds, hobby stocks, hot stocks and cruis-ers.
"I always had in mind that I'd build a race track and we've worked on this for about two and a half years. It's been like a hobby," said Boyter, who took copious mental notes about features he liked - and didn't like - of tracks he com-peted at during his own lengthy racing career. "I've owned this property for a long time and thought it was a good loca-tion for a track. There are about 600 drivers who live within 50 miles of here."
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and tickets will be sold starting at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday. Hot laps are at 6 p.m. with racing getting underway at 7 p.m.
"There's not a bad seat in the house," Boyter said. "I think these I-Stocks are going to be great. They've been a real success in Texas and I'm going to introduce them here."
Additional points races for the I.M.C.A. class at Ark-La-Tex are scheduled Aug. 16, 23 and 30, and Sept. 13, 20 and 27. Boyter plans to continue the Saturday shows as long as weather allows this fall.
Questions about Ark-La-Tex and upcoming race programs can be directed to the track office, at (318) 375-3470.

Friday, Saturday and again Sunday night.
Sixth through 10th on Friday and Saturday advance to the "B" race on Sunday, and the top 14 cars in that race move on to the main event.

Questions about the event can be directed to promoter Barry Joachim at (806) 438-1642.

Metz makes it look easy in winning Harris Clash

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 24) - Greg Metz made sure there was little drama involved in winning the 12th annual Harris Clash at Knoxville Raceway Thursday night.
The Washington, Kan., veteran led the 25-lap feature from flag to flag. Unfazed by a caution that came about just before the final circuit, Metz pulled away from the rest of the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified field on the re-start and was not challenged at the checkers.
John Logue, the 2000 Clash winner, settled for runner-up honors this time around. Missourians Gary Clark and Rex Merritt were third and fourth, respectively. Brad Pinkerton ran second much of the way and ended the night in fifth.
One hundred and four drivers from eight states vied for 28 spots in the feature. Metz, who pocketed $1,600 for the win, drew the pole start after winning the sixth heat and quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack.
Pinkerton snuck past Logue for second on lap 10; the first caution came on the 15th circuit when third-running John Van Den Berg caught enough of the wall to flatten a tire.
As would be the case following the late race re-start, Metz picked right up where he left off and left would-be chal-lengers well behind.
Kevin Larkins was in third before mechanical problems on the final lap and salvaged seventh place.
Other heat winners were Reese Coffee, Larkins, Jeff Stephens, Logue, Greg Cox, Pinkerton, Merritt, David Brown and Denny Stoneburner. "B" feature wins went to Mike Hughes, Ricky Stephan, B.J. Bruck and Jason Toppenburg.

Kastli captures Deery feature at Hamilton County Speedway

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (July 24) - Once the green flag came out to stay, Greg Kastli stayed at the front in the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Hamilton County Speedway.
Kastli started on the pole and led all 40 laps in winning the Thursday night special for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models. Gary Russell was second in the county fair race and Mike Smith was third.
Worth $2,000, the series win was Kastli's career fifth, and his first since Aug. 31 of 1997. He also moved up a spot to second in the series point standings with the victory.
A multi-car mishap on the original start sidelined Tony Moro and Jason Hahne. The re-start went more smoothly and the race was completed without another caution.
Dominant from the opening circuit, Kastli caught up with the back of the field just after mid-way. Russell would also find the fast lane and almost nosed ahead with 10 laps to go, but couldn't complete the pass.
Kastli went on to win by two car lengths. Following Russell and Smith and rounding out the top five were Todd Cooney and points leader Mark Burgtorf.
Boone McLaughlin, Burgtorf, Brent Slocum and Jeremiah Hurst were heat race winners. Ray Guss Jr. bested the "B" main.

Next series stops take Deery drivers to Des Moines, Pepsi USA Nationals

VINTON, Iowa (July 24) - Two of the biggest shows of the season come up next on the Deery Brothers Summer Se-ries schedule.
The tour for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models headlines the Tuesday, Aug. 12 race program at the Iowa State Fair-grounds in Des Moines. Then it's off to 34 Raceway at West Burlington for the $10,000 to win Pepsi USA Nation-als/Susan Pallister Memorial Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 13-14.
The annual state fair date was rained out last summer, so it's been nearly two years since the series appeared in Des Moines. Gates to the pit area will open at 3 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing to follow.
The only two-day show on the Deery slate in 2003, the Pepsi USA Nationals will showcase the talent of series regu-lars and visitors alike. Qualifying for the 26-car main event pays a minimum of $500.
One hundred laps will be the distance in the Aug. 14 feature race and $20 in lap money will be given to the front four cars every time around the track.
Setting fast time is worth $300, making the winner's possible payday a whopping $11,300.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. both days at 34, with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.
The all-time Deery Series record car count of 66 entries was established at the 1999 Pepsi USA Nationals and was matched at last year's event.
The 17th annual series concludes with races Aug. 31 at Quincy, Ill., Raceway, Sept. 1 at Boone Speedway and Sept. 11 at Farley Speedway.

Tornado benefit race July 27 at Thayer County Speedway

DESHLER, Neb. - The Friesen Chevrolet Challenge Series joins the track's regular weekly classes at a Sun-day, July 27 fund-raising race for Thayer County Speedway.
A tornado hit the Deshler track, town and surrounding area on June 22, causing considerable damage. Admission fees and money that would have been paid out as the purse will go toward repair bills at the fairgrounds.
Much of the grandstand roof came down on the bleachers and considerable damage to wiring resulted. An eight-sided ag building just a long stone's throw from the track was destroyed.
Along with the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Model series, the program will feature I.M.C.A.-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, along with factory stocks.
"We look forward to doing what we can to help," said George Anderson of the Central Nebraska Circle Track Asso-ciation. The CNCTA will pay each Late Model driver who races at Deshler $50 in gas money and they'll also get four pit passes per car.
Pit gates open at 3:30 p.m., hot laps are at 5:30 p.m. and racing is at 6 p.m.

Show-Me Championship at West Plains July 31-Aug. 2

WEST PLAINS, Mo. - The I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified driver who shows the most speed, skill and racing savvy will pocket the $5,500 top prize at West Plains Motor Speedway's Show-Me Championship.
Presented by Dirt Works Race Cars, the 11th annual event will be held Thursday, July 31-Saturday, Aug. 2 and drivers will have the chance to qualify for the 25-car, 40-lap feature each evening.
The race is I.M.C.A. sanctioned and all I.M.C.A. rules will be enforced.

The top eight finishers in "A" races each night make the grid for the minimum $550 to start main event. The last car added to the field will be the high point local driver not already qualified.

Modified, Deery Series drivers vie for Bert Transmission contingency awards

ST. CONSTANT, Quebec (July 18) - Champions and runners-up alike are on the receiving end of the Bert Transmission I.M.C.A. contingency award program this season.
Champions from each of the seven Modified regions will receive $300 product certificates, good toward the purchase of a new Bert Transmission.
Second-place drivers in both the national I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified standings and the Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models receive a Bert-made transmission.
Completing Bert's first-year contingency package are the Bert Transmission watches given to the crew chief for each feature winner in the 2003 Deery Series.
"I.M.C.A. has been a wonderful addition to our market," said company founder and owner Bert Robidoux. "It is a natural that this contingency program would come about and we're happy it happened."
Part of the sport since his teens, Robidoux was a high school machine shop teacher before opening Bert Transmissions in 1984. The company has expanded four times since then at its original location, most recently in 1999, and now calls an 11,550 square-foot facility in St. Constant, Quebec, home.
Its product line also includes other drive train and suspension components.
"I always wanted to make something for a race car," said Robidoux, who noted the time and effort competitors put into finding good used transmissions. "Reliability is one of the biggest things and our transmissions have been known for that since the beginning."
"It has been a pleasure working with Bert since we began negotiating this program late last year," I.M.C.A. Vice President of Marketing Kevin Yoder said. "Their enthusiasm to work with I.M.C.A. and give back to our members sets them apart from other organizations, and for that we are very appreciative."
Additional information is available via the www.berttransmission.com website or by calling (450) 638-2960.

Schrader scores second Deery Series win at Hawkeye Downs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (July 8) - While the program was billed as Dirt at the Downs, it was a racer better known for his accomplishments on asphalt who made the trip to victory lane Tuesday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
Winston Cup regular Ken Schrader made his annual visit to the Cedar Rapids speedplant, winning the Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models feature. He'd also won the event in 2001 and was second last year.
Working his way up from 10th at the start, Schrader passed LaVern Carey for the lead on the 28th of 40 laps. Carey's pursuit ended when he chased Schrader in lapped traffic and ended up in the turn one wall with eight laps left.
The ensuing re-start saw Schrader pull away and take the checkers ahead of Lonnie Bailey and Greg Kastli. Johnny Spaw and Brian Harris rounded out the top five.
Mark Burgtorf maintained his lead in the series point standings with an 11th place showing. Bailey's runner-up finish was good enough to put him back in second in the points race.
Todd Cooney started on the pole and led the first seven times around the track before heading to the pits with mechanical problems. Bailey inherited the point but Carey quickly took the front spot away.
Heat winners were Schrader, Boone McLaughlin, Burgtorf and Kastli. Darrel DeFrance won the "B" feature.
With six races in and six to go, the Deery Series returns to a familiar half-mile dirt track for its next outing, on Thursday, July 24 at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City. Pit gates will open at 4:45 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing is at 7 p.m.
Hamilton County was scheduled to host the series opener on March 29, but that race and the next day's rain date were lost to inclement weather.

Brinn becomes sponsor for I.M.C.A. Modified special events

BAY CITY, Mich. (June 25) - Competitors at 25 selected I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified events will receive contingency awards from Brinn Transmissions.
As a new sponsor this season, the Bay City, Mich., manufacturer will award $50 product certificates to the top 10 finishers at each designated special. Those certificates can be applied toward the purchase of a new Brinn-made transmis-sion.
A drawing will also be held in December, with a brand new transmission to be awarded to a driver who competed in at least one of the designated specials.
To be eligible, drivers must display a Brinn decal on each side of their race car.
Founded by Herb Brinn, Brinn Inc. introduced its first high-performance transmission in the fall of 1990. Focusing primarily on oval track transmissions, the company's original transmission quickly became known for reliability and du-rability. In addition to its durability, it reduced rotating weight and parasitic drag.
"We've got a good product that a lot of people can afford," Brinn said, describing himself as "a mechanical engineer who has loved automobiles ever since I was a kid."
The I.M.C.A. Modified division was introduced as an economical approach to racing, he added, and Brinn transmis-sions fit right in with that philosophy.
A former racing competitor himself, Brinn was a senior engineer for Chevrolet and then general manager at Howe Racing Enterprises before opening his own company.
Brinn Inc. also manufactures related bell housings, shock absorbers and shock dynamometers.
"We have developed reliable, strong and accurate shock absorber dynos that are cost-effective," said Brinn, who be-lieves the new, lower cost and racing competition will make shock dynamometer use practical and necessary for more race teams.
"The Brinn name is very recognizable in short track racing," I.M.C.A. Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. "Brinn has used the recent adaptation of our Modified transmission rules to their advantage by becoming associated with various special events across the country. Many I.M.C.A. racers could potentially benefit from Brinn's involvement."
More information about Brinn Transmissions is available by calling (989) 686-8920 or at the www.brinninc.com website.

Day Sunday Series at Heart O' Texas rained out

WACO, Texas (June 8) - For the second time in as many weeks, the Day Motor Sports Texas Super Sunday Series was rained out.
As was the case June 1 at Lubbock Motor Speedway, the scheduled June 8 date for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds and Stock Cars at Heart O' Texas Speedway was lost to wet weather.
Inclement weather canceled three of the first eight events. Standings were to have been determined by drivers' eight best outings, so all points earned at the three remaining races will be used to determine final series standings.
Completing the schedule are races June 22 at Kennedale Speedway Park, July 6 at Cardinal Motor Speedway in Eunice, N.M., and July 20 at Grayson County Speedway in Bells.
Henry Witt Jr. of Waco is the Modified points leader and Kevin Sustaire of Emory tops the Stock Car point chart.
The Modified series champion earns $2,000, the Stock Car champ $1,000.

White wins 100th in Friday feature at Super Bowl

GREENVILLE, Texas (June 6) - Jeff White won for the 100th time in his I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified career Friday night at Super Bowl Speedway.
From Ector, Texas, White also won the week before at Greenville and came oh so-close last Saturday with a second-place run at North Texas Motor Speedway in Royse City.
"I've never kept track, so I didn't know how many wins I had," he said. "I didn't know it was my 100th until after the race, when my wife Holly told me."
The victory Friday was also his seventh of the season.
White became just the second Texas driver to win an I.M.C.A. track championship when he took top honors at Grayson County Speedway in 1986. He had a single-season best 14 wins in 1995. His collection of track championships now numbers eight, including the 2002 crown at North Texas.
The 16 years from White's first to his most recent track title is the longest such span for any Modified driver since the division was introduced in 1979.
White is the 19th Modified driver to reach the 100 career win mark, and the third to do so this season.
He joins Ronnie Wallace of North Platte, Neb., and Aaron Spangler of Dove Creek, Colo., as the newest members of that elite fraternity.

Texas I.M.C.A. Nationals titles to Cross, Pritchett, Meyers
By J.M. Hallas

KENNEDALE, Texas (May 25) - Kelly Cross and Duain Pritchett both took the same approach to winning feature events in their respective divisions Sunday at the Texas I.M.C.A. Nationals.
Both started on the pole and led flag to flag at Kennedale Speedway Park, Cross in the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds and national points leader Pritchett in the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Cars.
Rounding out the Memorial Day Weekend program were the sanctioned Hobby Stocks. Chris Meyers was the Saturday night winner.
Cross, from Amarillo, put on one of the event's most dominating displays but still had to hold off the herd following two re-starts on the last circuit.
Off to a full straightaway lead before mid-way, Cross saw the field lined up right behind him after a lap 16 caution. A lapped car served as a buffer and Cross was again able to pull ahead of second-running Trent Crawford.
Crawford, in turn, was well in front of Dennie Gieber and Brian Davis in the fight for third and the tussle between Darryl Campbell and P.J. Egbert for fifth.
A spun car with one lap to go set up a green, white checker finish. Cross tried a late, slow re-start, but that stacked the pack as they piled into the corner. Eighth place runner Missy McAllister-Kerr was among the casualties, suffering a broken front end.
Cross hit the gas when the green flew again, followed across the finish line by Crawford, Gieber and Davis.
Pritchett was quick to grab the Stock Car lead while Chad Estes and Brandon Ellison ran side by side for third. Kevin Sustaire got into the mix behind Pritchett, making up ground in a hurry as the leader ran into the back of the field.
Sustaire closed to the bumper and took a look low, but Pritchett slammed the door. Sustaire's bid would end on the 14th circuit when he ran into the back of a slowing car, going into a half spin as third through fifth scattered to miss him.
Estes would be able to close in the corners but lost ground on the straight as he attempted to chase down Pritchett. The caution flag came out twice with five laps remaining. Finally back to green, Pritchett pulled away to win ahead of Estes, Travis Evans and Ellison.
Capitalizing on a lap six re-start in the Hobby main, Meyers got inside Joey Patterson for second and closed on leader Randell Jones.
Meyers grabbed the point from Jones on lap 12, then held off challenges from the higher line.
Jones tried the outside on the restart but was unable to get the lead back. Paul Martin took third back from Jerry West on lap 18.
More than 200 cars, including 112 Modifieds, 75 Stocks and 31 Hobbies, took part in the fourth annual event, which was co-promoted by a dozen tracks in Texas and New Mexico.

Spangler scores 100th career I.M.C.A. Modified feature win

CORTEZ, Colo. (May 23) - Aaron Spangler won his 100th career I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified feature Friday night at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez.
From Dove Creek, Colo., he is the 18th driver in the history of the division to reach the century win mark and the first driver from the Dirt Works Mountain Region to do so.
"Winning my 100th race is right up there at the top of anything I've ever done in this sport, and it's really cool to be the first one in the Mountain Region to do it. We might only get to race 30 or 40 times a year," he said.
Spangler's first sanctioned win came during the 1994 season. He raced to 20 wins and his first of three regional cham-pionships the next year.
His 1998 campaign was also notable because he won half the races he started, and did so with a cast on his right arm. Spangler had broken a bone in a non-racing incident mid-way through the season.
"I'm lucky in a lot of ways," Spangler said. "I've got a lot of people who believe in me and my family gives me tre-mendous support."
Both Spangler and Ronnie Wallace of North Platte, Neb., went into 2003 with 98 career wins; Wallace got his 100th on April 26.

Slocum becomes first-time Deery Series winner at Boone

BOONE, Iowa (May 26) - Out dueling and then out running the defending champion, Brenton Slocum became a first-time winner in the Deery Brothers Summer Series Monday night at Boone Speedway.
Slocum, from Burlington, topped the Super Nationals Warmup main event for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models ahead of 2002 series champion Terry Schlipman of Mendon, Ill. Third went to 1998 and 2001 champ Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., who rode the top groove from the 14th starting spot.
Schlipman and Slocum started the Memorial Day special on the front row and ran side by side for the first 12 of 40 laps. Schlipman snuck ahead but couldn't shake the pursuit, and an 18th circuit caution and resulting re-start gave Slocum the opportunity he was looking for.
Darting to the bottom of the track, Slocum snatched the front spot away and never let up. He'd get two lapped cars between his mount and Schlipman's and went on to win by half a straightaway.
Heat winners were Mike Smith of Jewell, Jeremiah Hurst of D
