EARL REEVES TAKES INAUGURAL 4-CYLINDER EVENT!
by: Randy Matheny

Temperatures soared to over 100 degrees over the weekend but the racing excitement was even hotter at Ronnie Moran's Muskingum County Speedway when the feature events hit the clay oval on Saturday night, giving fans another level of stock car racing, as they watched Doug Dodd, Kennny Johnson, Mike Ankrom, Jeff Tolliver and Earl Reeves secure their checker flag victories and celebrate in Budweiser Victory Lane.
It was a night for the Pure Stock division as Ronnie Moran posted a $500-to-win special event in the Boley Enterprise Pure Stock class and fans saw Jeff Tolliver in his #36 retired police cruiser taking the checker flag win for the second time this year and celebrating in Budweiser Victory Circle.
Tolliver had some tough competition throughout the event as first Roger Eveland and then Jesse Wisecarver made charges from behind attempting to take over the lead.
Tolliver held strong through 4 caution periods and restarts to take the win as Wisecarver, Eveland, Brad Ronshausen and Ed Leasure completed the top five positions. Rusty Redman was credit with Hard Charger recognitions as he advanced 10 spots from his original starting spot at the end.

Dodd started the O.K. Coal & Concrete Late Model feature event from the outside-pole position alongside Greg Baumberger. Jamie Miller, Jeff Abrams, Charlie Maloney, John Mallett, Sean Weekley, Chad Hina, Rob House and Jason Hindel followed for the first ten starting spots.
Dodd immediately jumped into the lead as first Baumberger, Miller and Maloney followed but Baumberger sailed over the backstretch embankment and was out of the race, bringing out the first caution period.
Dodd still led the pack as Miller and Maloney followed but Maloney soon dis-placed Miller to take the second spot and started working on the race leader as lapped traffic came into play.
Rob House brought out the next caution period as he spun low in turn #4 just prior to the scoring of lap 13.
Maloney was now ready for the restart to take his opportunity to get around the race leader Dodd, and did make passes to get out in front, as they exited turn #2 and down the backstretch. Dodd powered off turn #4 to score in the first place at the scoring line, pushing Maloney back into second each and every time.
Dodd took the checker flag victory, making it his 4th late model feature event win at Muskingum County Speedway, for the 2002 race season. Miller, Mallett and Hina completed the top five at the end as Jeff Boyd and Ray Leslie were both recognized with Hard Charger recognitions.

Fans saw one of the most exciting races of the night and perhaps the season in the American Payroll Advance Street Stock division as Mike Ankrom secured his 4th feature event win of the 2002 season after holding off some top drivers that show and race at Muskingum County Speedway weekly.
It all began with Ankrom and Dana Hammers in the first row as Mark Abrams, Kevin Smith, Pat Garrett, Bob Cannon, Rod White, Roger Flanagan, Ed Watson and Larry Jarrett started in the next spots for the first ten starting positions in the 21-car field.
Nine racing laps were recorded before the first caution period showed for a spinning Jeff Bates on the frontstretch that collected Glenn Underwood and Bill Crothers. Bates was credited with the incident and restarted from the tail as Kevin Smith, Dana Hammers and Bob Cannon were all three-wide through the turns. Pat Garrett and Mark Abrams were now poking into the picture, looking for a way to make a pass.
Only three more laps were recorded before another caution period came out for a spinning Jr Timmons exiting turn #4. Ankrom held strong to his lead as the green flag waved once again and fans really saw things heat up for the next 6 laps!
Lap 15 saw some hard racing between Hammers, Smith, Garrett, Cannon and Mark Abrams as they were shooting through the turns 3 and 4-wide, crowding and jockeying for space, as they came down the frontstretch, trying to inch ahead for a scored position over their competitor! Sparks and clay flew as drivers bumped and grinded each other down the frontstretch, heading for another battle as they approached the turns!
Two more caution and restart periods slowed Ankrom down from his momentum but he never gave up the top spot, celebrating for the 4th time in Budweiser Victory Lane as the battle was very hot and heavy behind him with Smith, Garrett, Cannon, Abrams, Rod White, Ed Watson and Travis Dobson! It was Pat Garrett making it into second place as the checker flag fell with Cannon, Dobson and White taking the top five spots! Dobson was credited with Hard Charger recognitions after his finish.

The Balderson Dodge / AMRA Modified division was the longest feature event for the night as drivers took fans through 9 caution periods before Parkersburg West Virginia driver, and birthday boy, Kenny Johnson claimed the feature event win in the Tommy Powell owned #1J car and celebrated in Budweiser Victory Lane with family and friends.
Johnson took over the lead on lap #2 from Rob Stambaugh and went on to endure the racing charges from behind as first Rob House, Jess Hartman, and then at the end, a hard charging Norman Aronhalt had worked his way up from his 19th starting spot in a car with a bent frame, was looking for a way around!
For the second half of the event fans saw some great racing between Jess Hartman and John Wyer as they raced for position but it was Hartman coming out ahead as he finished 4th behind 3rd finishing Junior Nolan and Scott Zemba secured 5th place.
Ronnie Moran started the 4-Cylinder division at Muskingum County Speedway this week and it was Earl Reeves of Albany Ohio taking the win over Jason King, Rick Isner and Kyle Gross.

Racing continues at Muskingum County Speedway each and every Saturday night with regular racing on Saturday August 10 and the next special event being August 17th with the 'BUDWEISER 30' $2,500-to-win Late Model feature event. Kids 11 and under FREE in General Admission with paid adult ticket. Additional information can be obtained by calling the track at 740-754-9199 or visiting the website at www.mcspeedway.20m.com.
