Adcox All-Madden: Smokey From 10th to Victory at NGS
Chris "Smoky" Madden of Gray Court SC put on a repeat performance
from the
earlier seasoned May Memorial 60 taking home the top prize of $5,000 in
round one of the Triple Crown Series at the North Georgia Speedway. Saturday
night was the 14th Memorial to the late Grant Adcox who was killed in
a
NASCAR race in November of the 1989 Winston Cup season. Madden piloting
his
black and purple #44 "Cherokee Landscaping, Century Plastics Inc."
Barry
Wright / Clements, Pontiac Gran Prix began his march from his tenth place
starting position to take the lead on lap 32 of the "A" Main
feature.
"This place you can really race on!", stated Madden as he climbed
from his
mount in victory lane. "I let Barry qualify the car (joked Madden
re: his
10th place start), we got some good positioning on the first lap and it
was
all go from there." Madden continued his praise of NGS and boasted
about his
crew and how he looked forward to returning October 4th for the "OctoberFAST
75".
Qualifying sent 32 competitors to the plate with 31 taking time. An awesome
lap from three Georgians would set the standard as: Russell Thomas, Kevin
Gibson and Doug English would click 12: second lap times early in the
evening. Defending race champion Ronnie Johnson clocked his Tennessee
mount
close to fast time at a 12:917 but it would be Billy "The Kid"
Ogle Jr.
stopping the watches at 12:740 looking for pole position in his 2003 debut
at NGS. The newly crowned 2003 NGS Track Champion Gary McPherson then
rolled
to the clay and burned everyone with a 12: 706, just five-tenths of a
second
off a new track record. This would set the stage for the Hicks Specialty
Welding Dash race.
McPherson and Ogle locked up for the start of the 8 lap dash and it was
McPherson taking the lead with Ogle, Gibson and Johnson following. Despite
pressure from Ogle, McPherson took the win earning the pole in his black
#29
"Bob's Auto Sales, Oval Craft" MastersBilt / Race tek, Ford
Taurus pocketing
an additional $200 courtesy of Kent Hicks. In the "B" Main Last
Chance race
John Llewellyn won the 12 lap feature the transferred the top eight
finishers. Jack Harper of Adcox Chevrolet was the Grand Marshall of the
event and brought the 24 car starting field to life with the wave of the
green flag.
Ogle stomped pasted McPherson through turn one and two as it seemed the
"Vanover and Sons Concrete, Calhoun's Restaurant" Warrior /
Custom, Pontiac
Gran Prix might have found the right line he searched for in the dash.
Third
starting Kevin Gibson reared the first yellow after contact in turn four.
The shocker wasn't Gibson so much as it was Madden who thwarted at least
three positions including; David Payne, Shawn Chastain, Thomas and English.
On the restart McPherson powered by Ogle bringing with him Johnson and
Madden, leaving Ogle to fourth. Lamar Scoggins reared the next caution
on
lap 8 stalling on the front straight-away. This poised the first on many
three-wide query's as Johnson's white #5 "Starrette Trucking, Miller
Bros,
Coal Inc" "Warrior / Race Engine Design, Pontiac Gran Prix looked
under
McPherson with Madden making RJ the meat of a SLM sandwich.
Gibson got together, back in the pack, with 2004 rookie hopeful Derek
Ellis,
to rear another yellow on lap 12. Scoggins and Ellis would later tangle
a
few lap later. After a lengthy green flag stint to throw in the back-marker
obstacles "Smokey" hustled past "the Flash" for second
using David Killian
to his advantage. Maddens momentum carried him on towards GMac and to
the
lead position in what would become the winning move. James Cline began
charging towards the front racing past English for sixth and chasing Payne's
fifth spot in his "Dixie Tool & Die, West Haven Speed Equipment"
Rocket /
Performance Engine Works, Pontiac Gran Prix after minor cautions littered
laps in the mid 30's. Ellis again reared a final caution setting up an
8 lap
rumble to the checkers only allowing Madden to pull away from RJ and GMac
who'd swapped second just prior to the final yellow. Payne fell prey to
Cline's high side power moves with five remaining. Madden ttok the checkers
a half straight-away ahead of Johnson and McPherson. Ogle & Cline
rounded
out the top five finishers.
Next Saturday night September 13th will be the last
race (regular format)
until round two of the Triple Crown Series action commences on Saturday
night October 4th, which is scheduled as a 75 lap $7,000 to Win SLM DirtCar
event. For more info. including photo's and scheduling info. visit the
track's web-site anytime at www.northgeorgiaspeedway.net.

The Shane & Shane Show Take Twins at N. GA Speedway
Story By: Steve Hixson (TVA Racing)
Shane Tankersly (aka. The Tank) and Shane Clanton were the victor's of
the
Twin 30 lap features Saturday night at North Georgia Speedway. "Tank"
rolled
his multi colored # T31 "High Country Builders, Hicks Specialty Welding"
Rocket / Race-tek Pontiac Gran Prix to victory, winning $1,500 for the
first
of two featured segments from the outside pole position. By virtue of
pill
inversion Clanton started the second featured segment on the pole after
a
third place finish in the first race. The yellow #25 "SAE Parts Inc,
Ronnie
Dobbins Motorsports" GRT / Custom, Chevrolet Monte Carlo pulled to
a
straight-away advantage over the rest of the field as the checkers flew.
Joining the winners in victory lane was associate event sponsor Oval
Craft's Ross Ardizzone. "This is exactly what I was wanting"
stated
Ardizzone "to spread out some extra money to the field." "Tank"
exited his
mount in victory lane excited about getting to work to ready the car for
race #2. "I'd like to thank my dad and crew for setting me up with
such a
great racecar. We've really gotten a good set-up here and like the folks
here too.", concluded Tankersly. "This is such a racey race
track." claimed
Clanton as he climbed from his machine after the second feature. "We
could've started back further and I feel we could've won still."
Clanton was
joined in victory lane by his wife and six month old baby Ryan (who for
the
first time was in attendance as papa took the checkers).
The start of the night began positive as a strong field of thirty (30)
Super Late Model DirtCars signed in for qualifying time trials. Kevin
Gibson
started out as one of the fastest qualifiers as he clocked his machine
at
13:018. His time stood until "Tank" rolled out an electrifying
12:937 lap.
It would be until Ricky Williams stunned the crowd with a 12:934 lap time,
in his "SAE Parts Inc, Ronnie Dobbins Motorsports" Rocket /
Custom,
Chevrolet Monte Carlo, that would unseat Tankersly. Williams teammate
Clanton followed and much to amazement was only able to muster a 13:010
(good enough for a fourth place start). Gary McPherson (in his quest for
his
umpteenth) NGS Track Championship was able to set third quick-time launching
his # 29 "Bob's Auto Sales, Oval Craft" MasterSbilt / Race-tek
Ford Taurus
towards the front of the "Dawg-Pak". Gibson maintained his good
qualifying
effort as fifth overall fast qualifier.
"The Chattanooga Flash" Ronnie Johnson was debuting a new racecar
as the
unmarked red and black mount quickly took the lead of the 12 lap "Last
Chance" consi. Current Track Record Holder Jerry Bradley ended his
"off-night" spinning in turn one of the consi. collecting Tim
Day. Jason
Durham and Kevin Burke battled for second, a straight-away behind Johnson
as
the checkers waved. "Shorty" Keith Frazier finished fourth with
Lamar
Haygood and Bo Moorehouse earning transfer spots to make up the first
twenty-four (24) starting grid. Day and Gabe Wilson would earn provisional
starts in featured segment #2 as Brian Hickman and John Jones would be
unable to start the second race.
Williams and Tankersly rolled the field down to the green flag for the
first twin race. Tank got the lead on the highside as Williams and teammate
Clanton battled side by side until Hickman reared the first yellow after
contact in turn three. On the restart Tank refired with Williams, Clanton,
McPherson and Gar Dickson in tow. Debris on the back straight-away slowed
the field on lap seven. A ten lap stint showed the field green next until
Gibson battling for sixth came to a halt in turn four. On the restart
Dickson took the money shot on
"G-Mac" taking over fourth place position. As laps wound down
John Jones
night ended in smoke on lap 26. Tankersly went on for the win, with
Williams, teammate Clanton, Dickson and McPherson following.
Tankersly drew pill #2 from a possible four row inversion,
setting him and runner up Williams in the third and fourth starting spots.
Clanton (who finished third) got the pole start as all eyes were on
Dickson's # 60 "Goddard Performance Parts, Kevko Graphics" Warrior
/ Race
Engine Design Ford Taurus. Clanton hit a perfect start and thwarted into
the
lead leaving Dickson to battle McPherson. All eyes turned to "the
Tank" as
the # T31 began roaring around the very top of the track. McPherson and
Tankersly picked off Williams at the halfway point. Tank then picked off
McPherson before setting his sights on Dickson just past the halfway point.
Aaron Ridley (debuting Derek Ellis' new # 99 SLM) can-opened his beautiful
new ride on lap 16. Dickson could only watch as Clanton rolled away again
after the restart but soon the # 60 had his hands full of a rolling
(highside) "Tank". Dickson closed the door several times on
Tankersly, most
noted when the duo collided off of turn two with six laps remaining. This
battle allowed McPherson, David Payne and Williams to ensue a five car
tussle for the runner-up position as the white flag flew over the field.
Dickson followed Clanton across the stripe at the finish with McPherson
nabbing third sending Tank to a fifth place finish. Payne rolled his #
8
Payne Tire / Base Fuel & Oils" GRT / Race-tek Pontiac Gran Prix
to fourth
just in front of Tankersly.

Skip Arp Reclaims Independence w/ $5K Victory at N. GA Speedway
By Steve Hixson (TVA Racing)

by CTCPhotos
Skip Arp of Georgetown TN repeated and reclaimed his top spot at the
North Georgia Speedway in flag to flag fashion Saturday night. Arp piloting
his white and black #31 “Crown Fiber, Base Fuel & Oils”
GRT / Gaerte, Pontiac Gran Prix through back-marker traffic (like a hungry
shark thru murky waters) led all 60 laps of the Independence “A”
Main feature despite setting the second fast time of the 32 entrees.
“It was really difficult!”, exclaimed Arp as he climbed from
his mount in victory lane. “This place is rough on you especially
when racers get the move over flag and they just keep on going.”
Arp continued by praising his fellow competitors in Chris Madden and Shane
Clanton, “despite the bad starts” from the 3rd starter. “He
kept getting the jump and diving under us and I wasn’t sure what
the deal was.”
From the beginning of Qualifying competitors would chase Madden as his
12:742 time set the standard early in the evening. Arp clocked a good
12:816, the closest to Madden as the black and purple #44 “Cherokee
Landscaping, Century Plastics” Barry Wright / Clements Pontiac Gran
Prix would firmly take his place for the I-60 start. Clanton and a surprise
fourth overall fast qualifier, local racer and 2002 Super Late Model DirtCar
rookie Jerry Bradley settled into the second row starting positions. Clint
Smith turned the fifth fastest clocking his black and yellow #44 “JP
Drilling Services, Pro Shocks” GRT / Race Tek Chevrolet Monte Carlo
at a 12:958 mark.
With the Top 16 fastest locked in from Qualifying the remaining spots
were comprised of two “Last Chance” consi. races which transferred
the top four finishers from each. At the start of the first consi. 17th
fast qualifier Jody Coltrane of Cummings GA held off the remainder of
the eight pack. Unfortunately for Bobby Turner (in a Clint Smith blue
and white #44) an oil leak took him outta contention while running second.
Ed Basey (in a borrowed unfamiliar #89) would finish second, with Shane
Tankersly and David Payne taking the remaining transfer spots.
In the second consi. it was Englewood TN Dusty Carver dusting (pun intended)
the field. After contact on the front straight away Rodney Dickson and
John Jones settled in for transfer spots with rookie Aaron Ridley earning
the final position. Racer’s not making the show included; Eddie
Blackmon, Glen Morris, Tyson Herrell, Rex Richey (who fielded a new Rayburn
#87), Sam Simmons, Ronnie Payne and Bo Moorehouse.
As the field took the green for the first of many times Clanton dove
past Madden and toward Arp and turn one. After four more attempts and
a verbal warning from NGS flagman to the yellow #25 “SAE Parts Inc.,
Ronnie Dobbins Motorsports” Rocket / Custom Chevrolet Monte Carlo,
the green finally wavered for more than a lap. Clanton was still able
to easily pass Madden setting his sights quickly on Arp’s lead.
Lap two reared the races first “official” yellow as Keith
Frazier, Kevin Gibson and Shane Tankersly came together in turn two. Before
a restart could apply defending race champion Brian Hickman ended his
night with transmission woes.
On the restart Arp, Clanton, Madden, Smith and Byron Michael laid the
hammer down. Bradley quickly exited top five status as Rick Hixson and
Michael diced for fifth. Lap 16 reared another lengthy yellow as Michael
(now reeling from the top five) and Kevin Gibson got together battling
for eighth. All eyes were focusing next on young Jeremy Clements as the
orange #51 “Gilkey Lumber Co., Starrette Trucking” Barry Wright
/ Clements Pontiac Gran Prix began picking on Hixson’s fifth place
spot.
From there it was green to go the rest of the way as Arp looked like
he was playing a 100+MPH game of hide n’ seek from Clanton dicing
in and outta traffic. Madden addressed several attempts at the reigning
track record holders position but to no avail. Carolina hot-shoe Clements
wasn’t through either as he reeled in Smith for the number four
finishing position with about ten remaining. Shane “The Tank”
Tankersly was able to salvage a sixth place finish despite the lap 2 incident
that locked down his tranny momentarily. From there the local wave of
SLM stars took over as; Gibson, Jones and Hixson waned just inside the
top ten. Ricky Williams placed the other Ronnie Dobbins entry barely within
the top ten finishers.
Next Saturday night July 5th the USCS Winged Outlaw Sprints return to
Mike Lee’s North Georgia facility to wrap-up an explosive Double
Header Independence Week celebration. For more info. including photo’s

Dale McDowell Steals Bear-ly Cook-ed Cold Turkey
NGS Victory
Dale McDowell became the third different winner of the North Georgia
Speedway "Triple Crown Series" races Saturday night in the very
thrilling/chilling "Turkey Day Rumble" Super Late Model race.
Piloting his
blue #17M "Dover Cylinder Heads, Larry Shaw Racecars, New Vision
Graphics"
Rocket / Pontiac Gran Prix McDowell (aka "Mac Daddy") regained
his lead
from Ray Cook on lap 64 and held on for the $7,000 payday to earn his
second
straight November Reign "A" Main feature.
"We were really good tonight, but Ray got us with back markers and
it
seemed we might be the runner-up." stated McDowell in a post race
interview from Victory Lane. "We really enjoy getting to race here
so close to home,
in-front of all of our friends and family. McDowell continued by thanking
his crew and team singling out brother Shane as the driving force behind
the glory of the winning team year after year.
Qualifying saw 49 entry's vying for the top sixteen locked in positions.
Cook would set the standard clicking a 14:111 knocking early fast
qualifier local racer Kevin Gibson from the pole. Reigning NGS Track Champion
John
Jones came close to Cook's time and seemed poised on taking the second
QuickTime. Unfortunately for JJ that was not the case. Not only would
the
Mac Daddy click a monsterous 13:881 for QT but "The Dirty White Boy"
Anthony White would click off a second fastest lap with a 14:036 time,
putting his
"Stone Plus, Clinton Muffler, Phillips 66" Warrior / Pontiac
Gran Prix out
the outside pole.
The top 16 fastest were locked in from qualifying, with the "Chattanooga
Flash" putting his # 5 "Stealth Racing Carburators" MasterSbilt
/ Ford
Taurus in the fourth starting position with Shane Tankersly setting fifth
quick time in the #T31 "High Country Builders, Race Tek Race Engines"
Rocket / Pontiac Gran Prix. The remaining spots were comprised of two
"Last
Chance - B Main" Consolation races which transferred the top four
finishers. At
the start of the first consi. David Killian of Murphy NC showed fast,
taking
the lead from the outside pole position. Seventeenth fast qualifier Bobby
Mayse held on for second as multi-NGS Track Champion Gary McPherson pedaled
from
a dismal fifth to third by Alabama racer Junior Brown. Seventeen year-old
Todd Morrow and his uncle Billy Mayo were unable to advance through the
"B"
Main along with the likes of Ross Martin, Paul Tims, Don Jenkins, Brad
Coffey
and others failing to make the show. Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs
GA
showed horses winning the second consi., again from the outside pole starting
position, over Randy Weaver. Randall Walker (another Alabamian) and Bear
Patterson also earned transfer positions to the feature rounding out the
top 4 positions.
As McDowell and White took the Green flag, the field scattered smothered
and covered the turn four area of the track. Lamar Scoggins got turned
around from his ninth place position stacking the field behind him. On
the
restart McDowell again grabbed the lead with the DWB between he and Cook.
The action would be short and sweet as Davey Davis cross-checked through
turn four bicycling Chupp's "Biscotti's Restaurant, Park Ohio"
Rocket /
Pontiac Gran Prix. Chupp was regulated to the rear of the field, as the
soon to be daddy, had to change two of his mounts hooves after the contact.
Davis in the process collected Kevin Gibson (who would exit first
officially from the race), both #22's Bobby Mayse and Robert Gant and
Bear
Patterson.
From lap three, the pace quickened for the next 34 laps.
The first rumble
came between White and Cook for second place. The "BrassNuxx Bandit"
wheeled his SmackDown #53 "Youngblood Concrete, Jacky Jones Ford"
MasterSbilt Ford
Taurus under White several times before sliding by the DWB in four for
the
position on lap 12. With McDowell negotiating through heavy backmarker
traffic Cook set his sights on McDowell. TCS #1 winner Johnson then began
mixing it up with White for third. A three man over the top battle
quickened the pace even more so as Jones slid his # J1 "Fisher Paint
& Body, Race
Tek Race Engines" GRT / Chevrolet Monte Carlo by the pair coming
off turn one.
RJ tried to gather back quickly off of White but it was too late as JJ
hit
the trail towards Cook and the backmarkers. Laps continued to feverishly
click by as Cook drew closer to McDowell. It was then on the 34th circuit
Cook's opening would surface as McDowell miscalculated Patterson, Rainey
and Davis in turn four.
Yellow appeared just three laps later as David Killian stalled his mount
in turn four. Restarting the field Cook led McDowell, Jones, Johnson and
Clint Smith in the fifth spot. The next five Chupp, Bobby Turner, Gary
McPherson, David Payne and Shane Tankersly all vied for lead lap positioning
within
the top ten. Unfortunately White, Jeff Smith, Randy Weaver and Killian
all
pitted ending their night before the lap 37 restart. C.Smith and RJ then
began rumbling around the new clay banks for fourth as Jones trailed Mac
Daddy in second. Smith worked his #44 "JP Drilling Service, Base
Fuel &
Oils" GRT Chevrolet Monte Carlo by Johnson swapped positions on lap
45 as
Chupp headed towards his former teammate. McDowell began putting a trace
on Cook as Chupp passed Johnson for fifth. Cook this time headed for the
backmarker traffic of Patterson, Rainey and Randall Walker meeting a
similar fate as McDowell this time slid underneath for what would be the
winning
move of the "Turkey Day Rumble" just ten lap prior to the checkers.
