Path Valley Enters New Territory with October Racing
By Walt Cox
Spring Run, PA_ The popular regional fiction is that short track stock
car
and sprint racing must end at Labor Day when Friday night football and
school activities take the limelight.
The Path Valley Speedway Park will put the lie to that myth as Two Wheel
Promotions presents a full month of October races.
The nationally famed quarter mile clay oval will present sprint and stock
car racing every Friday night and AMA Motorcycle, big money kart racing
or
strictly stock Junkyard Car racing every Saturday night in October.
According to senior race director John Winsett, some of the racing October
racing was scheduled at the beginning of the season, but due to 31 rainouts
this season, several optional rain dates are also being used. "Our
racers
want more races just for the joy of racing, first, but also for a better
base for the season points averages," he explained.
Only one Sunday event remains on the Path Valley schedule, the annual
Four-Cylinder Shootout on Sunday, Oct. 19, with gates open at noon for
all
of the region's four-cylinder stock cars.
Every Saturday program is different and Saturday racing culminates Oct.
25
with the Go-Kart Saturday Finale for all 15 top classes of regional karts.
The annual Saturday Night Finale will be the only karts night race on
the
Path Valley clay, which retains its moisture after sunset, and the fastest
laps of the season are anticipated as top kart riders from throughout
the
region gather.
Kart payback is 75 percent of entry fee for senior divisions and 50 percent
for junior classes. All classes with more than 10 entries will race 25
laps
and those with fewer entries will race 15 laps. Sponsored overall by Burris
Racing, the tire rule is waived except for Champ classes and WKA rules
will
apply.
The Strictly Stocks, formerly junk cars, race on Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 and
the
Oct. 4 race features an added powder puff for ladies who do not race in
any
regular division while the Oct. 18 races include a mechanic's race for
legitimate crew members who do not have experience in regular weekly stock
car or enduro racing.
The motorcycles and four-wheelers take over the remaining Saturday in
October with the national championship caliber Central PA Legends Cars
as an
added attraction. This is AMA sanctioned racing for upwards of 20 classes
of
motorcycles based on the age of the riders and the size of the motorcycles
and grandstand admission is free.
Free grandstand admission is also offered for the two remaining Saturday
afternoon races for karts and quads. Oct. 4 is a double points race and
Oct.
11, with many karts that do not race regularly expected to test the track
for the Saturday Night Finale, is not a points race.
The biggest racing show of the week remains Friday nights with the PA
305
Sprints, 600 Sprints, 270 Sprints and the Mini Stocks and Four-cylinder
Thunder Cars featured every Friday night in October.
Added attractions Oct. 3 include the final race for both the V-8 Street
Stocks and the Dwarf Cars. Oct. 10 includes an added special appearance
of
the Four-Cylinder Strictly Stock junkyard cars. The Six-Cylinder Strictly
Stocks have been added for the Oct. 17 Friday features, and the V-8 Strictly
Stocks will get their exhibition Friday night race on Oct. 24.
Additional makeups are highly unlikely, according to Two Wheel Promotions,
because the Pleasant Hall Fireman's Hall has long been reserved for the
annual awards banquet Nov. 15 and tickets are already available at the
track.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north

Path Valley Bikers and Legends Look Forward to Final Race
By Walt Cox
Spring Run, PA_ Rained out after a 'wait and see' delay Saturday night,
Sept. 27, the regular AMA motorcycle and four-wheeler races at the Path
Valley Speedway Park are now scheduled for Oct. 11, the final motorcycle
date on the track's calendar.
The rainout Sept. 27 is number 31 at Path Valley this season.
The Central PA Legends Cars which were also on hand Saturday night will
join
them for a special race, even though it was not on the latest calendar.
"The
Legends just love to race on the super smooth and fast clay the track
requires for motorcycle racing, so we'll be back," said regional
organizer
Don Stevens. Path Valley has produced the INEX Legends Dirt Track National
Champions for the past two consecutive years.
While Oct. 11 is the final event for the bikes, quads and Legends, the
regular stock cars, sprints and strictly stock junkyard cars race at Path
Valley through the end of the month when the season closes with the Go-Kart
Saturday Night Finale. Tickets are available at the track for the annual
awards banquet Nov. 15 at the Pleasant Hall Firemen's Hall.

Path Valley Adjusts for Final Three Kart Races

Animal class winner Autumn Bear.
Spring Run, PA_ Brother and sister Dakota and Autumn Bear of Elliottsburg
each won kart features and Craig Robinson of Ft. Loudon lifted a
four-wheeler wheel all the way around the track in Burris karts and quads
racing Saturday at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
Two Wheel Promotions announced that the Oct. 4 race would be for double
points and conclude the local season points racing in the Burris National
Speedway Series. The Oct. 11 race, with many new racers expected in practice
for the Oct. 25 Saturday Night Finale, will not be a points race.
The annual Saturday Night Finale will be the only karts night race on
the
Path Valley clay, which retains its moisture after sunset, and the fastest
laps of the season are anticipated as top kart riders from throughout

Path Valley Sprint Wins to Shatzer, Good and Callahan
By Walt Cox

Jimmy Callahan of McVeytown announced that his winning
600 Sprint is for sale so he can move to 305 Sprints.
Spring Run, PA_ Dusty Shatzer of Hagerstown, a veteran micro sprint winner
at the Path Valley Speedway Park in past years, raced to his first win
in the full-size PA 305 Sprints Friday night. He led every lap and the
final one-lap shootout after Von McGee flipped over the turn three wall
on lap 20, and then he dedicated his first win to his father, Don, as
a birthday gift.
Middleburg chauffer Sean Good in the Elite Chassis factory micro outran
Matt Miller for his nineteenth 270 Sprints win, and in 600 Sprints Jimmy
Callahan of McVeytown took the lead from Ben Murphy on lap 8 and then
beat defending 600 Sprints champion Jim Brookens to the checkers by half
a turn.
Young Mike Hay of Somerset led every lap of the Dwarf Cars feature and
lapped all but two other Dwarfs. “The track was fabulous and I found
a smooth tacky outside groove that made passing easier,” he said.
Kevin Thomas of St. Thomas won the Mini Stock feature by about six feet
as Jerry Bard made a futile wheel to wheel charge through the final three
laps and Randy Wible finished third with his #9 spouting dramatic flames.
Lyle Barnes of Chambersburg led the four-cylinder thunder cars by half
the track until a lap 18 caution regrouped the field, but Barnes held
the lead over Keith Armolt through the final three laps to win by a turn.
All three classes of sprints race every Friday night in October as Path
Valley attempts to make up 30 rainouts and provide a broader base of races
for the points standings, and next Friday, Oct. 3, will see seven features
on the quarter mile clay oval as the Dwarf Cars with the V-8 Street Stocks
return. The PA 305 Sprints headline all the remaining races with the 600
Sprints and 270 Sprints also in action and the Mini Stocks and thunder
cars provide weekly stock car support.

Fink of Perry County in the Xtra-Heavy karts. Jr. Restricted top five
points
racer Chad Walter won his first feature of the season.

karts

was
so successful on the soft nighttime clay last season.

Path Valley Catches Up From Isabel with Young and Glass Wins
By Walt Cox

Legends winner Lawrence Garrison of Beaver Springs.
Spring Run, PA_ In a race rescheduled to Sunday for Hurricane Isabel
at the
Path Valley Speedway Park, Rodney Glass of Ft. Loudon beat visiting star
Mike Rutherford by several lengths in 270 Sprints and Jim Young waited
for a
break to beat visiting Dusty Heistand in 600 Sprints.
Lawrence Garrison of Beaver Sprints won his fourth Legends Feature and
Randy
Patterson of Shippensburg won his tenth in the V-8 Street Stocks, but
the
happiest winners of the night were Gary Dehart of Ft. Loudon who won his
first of the year in the Mini Stocks and Terry Smith of Willow Hill who
won
after leading every lap in the four-cylinder thunder cars.
Stock cars and sprints race every Friday night for the next five weeks
at
Path Valley as Two Wheel Promotions struggles to add points to the averages
after a record 30 rainouts this season. Go Karts and Quads race Saturday
afternoons and Strictly Stocks or AMA motorcycles and four-wheelers race
Saturday nights. Two very special shows include the Four-Cylinder Shootout
Sunday, Oct. 19 and the Go-Kart Finale Saturday night, Oct. 25. Tickets
are
now available for the awards banquet Nov. 15.
Topping the daytime excitement, Dusty Heistand in his #9 600cc Sprint
with
its King chassis led the field through the first 16 laps and then broke
and
drifted to a stop on the front stretch. Jim Young in his Predator factory
sprint had run second until then and took over on the restart to beat
Jim
Callahan (Hyper Chassis) and Jim Brookens to the checkers. In victory
lane
Young told on-track interviewer Walt Cox, "I didn't want to get into
him and
then have both of us sit there, so I just stayed as close as I could in
case
he made a mistake."
Young graciously discounted the battle of factory-sponsored sprints,
noting
that the King, PMP, and Hyper cars had great drivers too. "Predator
supports
me all they can with some wonderful machines, and I get some help from
the
Cernic's dealerships and with my American Racer tires from Lias Tire in
Indiana, but I do all the maintenance and engine work on my 600 and my
270,"
he said.
Likewise, Randy Patterson credited a little bit of luck as a great help
after Brad Jones and Tim Fedder battled for the V-8 Street Stock lead
until
lap 15 when they violently got together in turn two and let Patterson
take
over the lead on the restart. "I would have settled for third rather
than
tangle it up with them, but it's great to see Brad back racing,"
he said.
Lawrence Garrison took the Legends lead from pole starter Denny Rothermel
on
lap two and stayed just ahead of past national champions Butch Brough
and
Allen Felix for his fifth season Path Valley win. The Legends cars produced
only one caution to regroup the field.
The 270 Sprints raced one lap at a time with nine cautions in the first
16
laps and Rodney Glass held the front spot on each restart with Rutherford
right behind him as Sean Good and Brian Walker worked up to third and
fourth
and Matt Miller passed Alex Cunningham for fifth on lap 16. Glass said
the
win was his fourth of the season at Path Valley and seventh overall.
Gary Dehart held onto third through several Mini Stock cautions and went
to
work on leaders Kevin Thomas and Mike Beidel on a lap 17 restart. He roared
through the final three laps to win by a full turn for his first victory
of
the year.
After a final caution on lap 7, the four-cylinder thunder cars raced
non-stop with past champion Terry Smith and John Rasp breaking away from
the
field and running a sort of match race of their own which Smith won by
a
couple lengths. Jeremy Truax, Joe Hawbaker and Richard Stache filled in
the
front five.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north
on PA

Rookies and Veterans Share Path Valley Saturday Features
By Walt Cox

Mary Jay of Everett wins in only her second powder puff race.
Spring Run, PA_ Rookie Dave Ricker of Chambersburg said after putting
his #99 six-cylinder into the Path Valley Speedway Park victory lane for
the first time Saturday night, “I just found a groove and stuck
to it.”
Veteran V-8 Strictly Stock racer Jerry Fleming of St. Thomas echoed,
“It was hairy racing, but I got a little lucky.”
Legends Cars winner Randy Fetterolf of Dauphin won his first feature
in three years of racing and agreed that a little luck helps a lot while
rookie Todd Heckman of Chambersburg credited his father and crew for their
work on his winning four-cylinder. Mary Jay of Everett won the powder
puff just ahead of her best friend after negotiation a roadblock of lapped
cars, and Josh Heckman of Hamburg won the Legends makeup and said, “What
a thrill to win two races in a season against guys like these.”
Only two full sets of features remain for the low budget Strictly Stock
racers at Path Valley on Oct. 4 and 18 and each class also has a Friday
night exhibition race scheduled to show off the former junkyard cars to
the sprint and stock car fans and teams.
The Legends Cars opened the Saturday night features with Denny Rothermel
and Lawrence Garrison swapping the lead until lap 16 when both along with
Josh Morrow spun or broke. Fetterolf took over the lead after racing in
second or third most of the way and scooted ahead of Ray Swank, Randy
Kissinger, Warren Ropp and Andy Lupfer to take the checkers. After four
cautions nine of 20 finished.
Dave Ricker passed Joe Walker for the six-cylinder Strictly Stock lead
on lap eight and used lapped cars to hold off those chasing him as he
won by more than a turn. The groove he found was high on the outside and
he charged past lapped cars with Mike Scott, Rob Keller, Andy Krause Jr.
and Dave Reaugh filling out the front five.
The V-8 Strictly Stock feature saw frequent past winner Jerry Fleming
lead the early laps and then the last two laps after Joe Daywalt and Dave
Dunkle lead and then took themselves out of contention on lap 18. The
front five were Fleming, Robert Naugle, Dave Kitzmiller, Luther Daywalt
Jr., and Dustin Brown.
The full field of four-cylinders saw the night’s only red flag
when Johnny Runk put the #29 on its side in turn four, blocking the inside
groove. Jeff Koser led the first 17 laps but slowed to pass James Best
on lap 18 while Todd Heckman and later Robert Weist went to the outside
to pass both. The front five finishers were Heckman, Weist, Koser, Tim
Riley and Dave Strait. Runk was not seriously injured.
The powder puff was as thrilling as the regular features as Beth Verno
in the winning #29 and Tiffany Miller in #17 led the first half. Then
all of the front-runners encountered a turn two roadblock of cars to be
lapped in turn two. Mary Jay in the #4J and Chris Chamberlain in the #2J
passed among them and then raced each other the final half of the race.
In Victory Lane, Mary Jay said it was her second powder puff ever and
Bob Jay and Jay’s Used Cars of Everett were responsible for giving
her the chance to win. She and Chris Chamberlain had switched cars before
the race because she could better drive a five-speed, and she said, “But
it really doesn’t matter who won, it was such fun racing!”
The next Strictly Stock powder puff is scheduled Oct. 4 and a mechanics
race is set for Oct. 18.

Path Valley Strictly Stocks Rain Out Saturday Night
By Walt Cox
Spring Run, PA_ With showers washing out the work each time the track
was
almost prepared for racing, Two Wheel Promotions was forced to postpone
the
Saturday night Strictly Stock racing for the former Junkyard Cars divisions.
Rain check wristbands will be honored both next Friday and Saturday nights.
The soaker marks 29 races lost to rain this season at the Franklin County
clay oval.
Next Saturday, Sept. 20, the Legends Cars will join the three classes
of
minimum cost strictly stock cars with gates open at 5 p.m. following the
regular daytime quad and kart racing. Two rain makeup Saturday night races
for the Strictly Stocks had already been scheduled in October, with a
Powder
Puff added October 4 and a Mechanics' Race added on October 18. AMA
motorcycles and quads race on the other Saturday nights in Sept. and Oct.
In addition, to show off the Strictly Stock racing in front of the regular
Friday night sprint and stock car fans, one Friday night race for each
division has been scheduled in Oct.
Friday, Oct. 10, the Four-Cylinder Strictly Stocks will join the lineup
of
305 sprints, 600 Sprints, 270 Sprints, Mini Stocks and Thunder Cars.
The Six-Cylinder Strictly Stocks race Friday night, Oct. 17, along with
the
305 Sprints, 600 Sprints, 270 Sprints, and Thunder Cars, and the V-8
Strictly Stocks race Friday night, Oct. 24, in the season's final sprint
and
stock car event. The Path Valley season concludes Saturday night, Oct.
25,
with the Second Annual Kart Finale.
Formerly called Junk Cars or guardrail cars, the Path Valley Strictly
Stocks
are becoming the biggest regular show on the steeply banked quarter-mile
clay track. No racing modifications are allowed, and the only changes
from
on the street stock condition allowed are for safety, including the
signature addition of a guardrail section from front tire well to rear
on
the driver's side. A four-point roll bar is permitted, and a helmet and
safety gear including shoes and shirts is required.

Von McGee Repeats Path Valley 305 Sprint Win
By Walt Cox

Aaron Eichelberger, 600 Sprints winner.
Spring Run, PA_ From his starting eighth, Von McGee charged into second
place on lap two of the PA 305 Sprint feature Friday night at the Path
Valley Speedway.
At lap 12 he pulled alongside leader and past national champion Jason
Shultz.
Running the high groove for better traction, the Spring Run sprint jockey
completed his pass for the lead on lap 16, just before Shultz went into
the
turn two wall. By lap 18 McGee led by a full turn but in the final two
laps
Todd Spangler and defending Path Valley champion Scott Ellerman closed
the
lead to no more than four lengths as McGee won for the third time to
continued his claim as the only repeat Path Valley 305 Sprints winner.
The front five finishers were McGee, Spangler, Ellerman, Chris Meleason,
and
Jim Roush, and Shultz and Meleason won the heat races. Six cautions, the
last on lap 17, regrouped the sprints.
Aaron Eichelberger of York Springs won his second Path Valley 600 Sprints
feature, and Sean Good of Middleburg raced his #17 Elite Chassis factory
sprint to his 18th win in the 270 Sprints. Lyle Barnes of Chambersburg
won
his second feature in the thunder cars and Randy Wible of Three Springs
raced the #65 Mini Stock to his first win of the season.
Senior Race Director John Winsett announced that the 305 Sprints have
been
added to the lineup for rain makeup races every Friday night in October,
and
that the Oct. 17 features will not be points races for the 270 Sprints
and
600 Sprints because of a scheduling conflict with another track. Further,
three of the October races will include exhibition features by the three
classes of Strictly Stock cars that race Saturday nights.
The four-cylinder strictly stock exhibition feature will be Friday night,
Oct. 10. The six-cylinders will race on Friday night Oct. 17, and the
V-8
strictly stock cars, formerly known as junkyard or guardrail cars, will
race
their special Friday night feature on Oct. 24. In one additional significant
schedule change the annual Four-Cylinder Shootout has been moved to Sunday,
Oct. 19, with gates open at noon. "We are not adding race dates,"
Winsett
said, "we are instead using all of the optional dates available to
make up
for the 28 rainouts we've had so far this season."
In the 600 Sprints Aaron Eichelberger led all but part of one lap when
Duane
Harbaugh briefly edged past him on the outside cushion. Then on lap 17
Harbaugh's #87 broke in turn one. The front five were Eichelberger, Jim
Young, Jason Starr, Jim Brookens, and Richie Fritz and the heats went
to
Starr and Tim Robertson.
The 270 Sprint thriller was far from a runaway as Sean Good took his
eighteenth win of the season overall. Good passed Chad Myers on a lap
four
restart after running from fourth side by side with Alex Cunningham. On
lap
14 Matt Miller, up from a ninth place start, passed Good on the outside
of
turn two but on lap 18 Miller went wider in turn four and Good passed
him on
the inside. Through the final two laps Good gained a full turn. The front
five were Good, Miller, Zack Zook, Todd Reusser, and Brian Walker. Randy
Pitt, Myers and Cunningham won the heats.
The number 8 inversion pill put Randy Wible on the pole to start the
mini
stocks and he stayed there through five restarts in the first six laps.
At
the finish Kevin Thomas, Jerry Bard, Eric Mellott, Barry Welch, and Kyle
Wiser were right behind like passenger cars on a train with Wible's #65
as
the engine. Welch and Steve McCartney won the heats.
The four-cylinder thunder cars feature went to Lyle Barnes after seven
restarts as he raced ahead of Wes Scofield and the Casner brothers. Barnes,
Derrick Casner, Chris Casner, Richard Stache, and Melvin Bigler were the
front five and Bigler and Dave Edwards won the heats.
Next Friday night the Legends Cars and the V-8 Street Stocks will join
the
regular lineup and the Legends return next Saturday as an added attraction
with the three Strictly Stock classes.

Good Wins at Path Valley With Hershey, Brookens and Brown
By Walt Cox

Avoiding a turn four tangle are Jimmy Brookens (11), Glen
Heverin (98) and Jake Murphy (18).
Spring Run, PA_ Joey Hershey raced his #55H PA 305 Sprint sponsored by
Hershey Racing Engines to his first ever win at the Path Valley All Sprints
Nationals Sunday.
Sean Good won in the 270 Sprints for his seventeenth victory of the season
and Jimmy Brookens won his thirteenth race in the 600 Sprints while Steve
Brown of Lancaster won the special feature for the 125 Sprints in their
only
visit of the year. The $500 to win special had been rescheduled from its
traditional Labor Day Monday.
Senior race director John Winsett of Two Wheel Promotions announced that
the
season for sprint car racing at Path Valley Speedway Park has been stretched
to Friday, Oct. 24 and the 270 Sprints and 600 Sprints will race every
Friday in rain makeup points races while the PA 305 Sprints will race
Sept.
12 and Sept. 26 and then every Friday in October.
"We are not adding extra races, we are making up some of the 28
rainouts we'
ve suffered through this season," Winsett explained at the drivers'
meeting.
With eight Path Valley 305 Sprints races completed, Hershey was the seventh
different winner and the rookie said in victory lane that the firm, smooth
daytime track was perfect for his driving style. At the end of the third
lap
he led by a full turn but Ryan Lynn of Hollidaysburg caught up amid lapped
sprints on lap nine and hounded him to the end. A lap 20 caution regrouped
the field by Hershey stayed ahead of Lynn to win by more than a length.
The
front five were Hershey, Ryan Lynn, Jim Wentz, Dusty Shatzer and defending
champion Scott Ellerman. Mike Freet and Ellerman won the heats.
The PA 305 Sprints race with a 'spec' engine based on the Racesaver®
Brodix
heads developed by speed guru French Grimes. The group conducts their
own
technical inspections and all engines are thoroughly inspected and then
sealed. Information on the series is available at www.pa305sprints.com.
Defending Path Valley champion Jim Brookens of Fayetteville offered special
thanks to defending Valvoline Cup national champion Jim Young from the
winners circle because Young won the first heat a drew a 10 pill for
inversion that put Brookens on the front row. Brookens passed Jason Starr
on
the first lap after a restart and after the second and final lap 18 caution
beat Starr to the finish by half a lap. The front five were Brookens,
Starr,
Donnie Hendershot, Dusty Heistand and Ryan Greth. Young, Rod Schell and
Jake
Murphy won the heats. Brookens also collect half the $100 bonus for both
the
600 Sprints and the 270 Sprints from Predator Racecraft, and the balance
went to the last two feature finishers.
>From the pole Middleburg star Sean Good in the Elite Chassis housecar
led
every lap of the 270 feature. Mike Rutherford in the #7L pulled alongside
on
lap 18 but then fell off the pace with chain problems reported. Colby
Womer
in another Elite actually passed Good on lap 19 but a caution for Jason
Kemp
before the end of the lap forced a restart on the previous lap's running
order and cancelled Womer's pass.
In victory lane Good said he had to overcome transmission problems, but
his
#17 was set up perfectly for the steep Path Valley banks. The front five
finishers were Good, Womer, Doug Dodson, Matt Miller and Chad Myers and
Rutherford, Dodson, Good and Ray Peters won the heat races while Shane
Penny
won the 13-sprint consi and finished twelfth in the feature.
In sharp contrast Steve Brown started eighth in the 125cc Sprints feature.
On lap two Kory Merkey flipped the #29 in turn one for the only bent wing
of
the day and Amanda Schlegel, who won the last time the 125's visited Path
Valley, had to be towed. Brown caught Sunny Switzer on lap four and passed
for the lead on lap nine. Then he scooted ahead of Doug Coonan to the
checkers after Switzer dropped out. The front five were Brown, Coonan,
Ray
Merkey, Jared Weaver and Brian Woodson. Brown and Jared Weaver won the
heats.

Path Valley Wins to Felix, Kitzmiller, Ehrhart and Thurber
By Walt Cox

Tony Thurber of Orbisonia celebrates his first win.
Spring Run, PA_ The Legends Cars opened the show Saturday night at the
Path
Valley Speedway Park with a non-stop charge to the checkers as defending
INEX national champion Allen Felix of Shippensburg came from fourth place
to
pass Ray Swank for the lead around a lapped car on lap 13.
The three Strictly Stock features that followed failed to follow the
Legends
' lead. Tony Thurber of Orbisonia picked up his career first in the
four-cylinders after starting seventh, and Jon Ehrhart of Chambersburg
in
his first race scored the second win for the #65 six-cylinder from a sixth
place start. For the second consecutive race Dave Kitzmiller of Roxbury
raced smart and won from the twelfth place handicap start in the V-8 class.
The no-budget entry level Strictly Stocks, formerly called junkyard cars,
next race Sept. 13 and again Saturday, Sept. 20 at Path Valley. Rain makeups
have been scheduled October 4 and Oct. 18. And since Path Valley is racing
rain makeups from 28 season washouts every Friday in October, each of
the
Strictly Stock classes has been scheduled for a Friday night exhibition
race
in front of the big Friday night sprint and stock car fans.
The 4-cylinder strictly stocks will race Friday night, Oct. 10. The
six-cylinders will race Friday night, Oct. 17, and the V-8 Strictly Stocks
will race Friday night, Oct. 24. The PA 305 Sprints, at their request,
will
also race every Friday night in October. Gates open at 5 p.m. for both
Friday and Saturday evening races at Path Valley.
Tony Thurber, the ticket taker at the Path Valley grandstand gate when
he's
not racing, drove the #97 Geo Storm for Chester Atherton and made third
place on lap three. Then he waited and held his position behind Mark
Campbell and past winner Denny Schofield until they let him past among
lapped cars on lap nine.
On lap 13 he found a clear spot among the lapped cars and shot ahead
to
finish half the track ahead of Todd Heckman with 14 lapped cars behind
him
and a huge crowd of friends and fans cheering him on. The top five were
Thurber, Heckman, Schofield, Jeff Treece and Campbell. Gary Koser, Treece
and Heckman won the heats and Jeff Hale won the consi.
The Legends Cars feature was so evenly matched that Allen Felix only
lapped
two cars as he raced without pause to his third win of the season and
second
at Path Valley. He finished slightly more than a length ahead of Ray Swank
as the two broke away from the field. The front five were Felix, Swank,
Bryan Swartz, Denny Rothermel, and Lawrence Garrison and Garrison and
Nathan
Fisher won the heats. The Legends are scheduled three more times and finish
their season Sept. 27.
Ehrhart used the lapped #7 of Mike Scott to pass early leader Danny Book's
#98 on lap four and then he raced like a pro as Rob Keller of Fayetteville,
the regular Path Valley announcer in #43, caught up on lap 14. At the
dramatic finish Ehrhart won by about five feet with Keller's bumper even
with the door on his #65 Chevy Caprice. The front five were Ehrhart, Keller,
Dave Ricker, Jason Ege, and Health Book and the heat winners were Dave
Ricker, Nick Ott, and Danny Book.
Derrick Hinish led the first half the V-8 feature and then fell off on
lap
11 as Dave Kitzmiller negotiated past Joey Burdge. Past winner Dustin
Brown
and then Tony Verno challenged briefly but Kitzmiller said he "decided
to
stay behind some lapped cars and just finish the race," and cars
he had
already lapped kept him in the clear for the final five laps. The front
five
were Kitzmiller, Tony Verno, Joe Daywalt, Robert Naugle, and Tom Brady
and
the heats went to Luther Daywalt Sr. and Brown.

Path Valley Sprint Wins to Brookens and Walker
By Walt Cox

600 Sprints winner Jimmy Brookens.
Spring Run, PA_ Repeat winners were the order of the day as Jimmy Brookens
of Fayetteville won his twelfth of the season in the 600 Sprints and Brian
Walker of Somerset won his second feature and continued his points lead
in
the 270 Sprints.
Greg Burd of Boiling Sprints and Derrick Casner of Mifflintown each won
their second feature in the Legends Cars and Thunder Cars, respectively,
and
the top stock car wins went to Randy Patterson of Shippensburg in the
V-8
Street Stocks and Barry Welch of Three Springs in the Modified Mini Stocks.
The micro sprints thrillers presaged the annual All Sprints Monday Nationals
rescheduled for rain until this Sunday, Sept. 7. Next weekend's three
days
of racing starts off with the 305 Sprints headlining Fan Appreciation
Night
Friday. Saturday night the Strictly Stocks rain makeup follows afternoon
karts and quads racing, and Sunday the Pennsylvania Dirt Karters Association
(PDKA) takes over the track for race five in the Burris-sponsored State
Championship Series of six WKA Divisional races.
Closing out the night's six-feature program before 10:30, the 600 Sprints
nightcap proved the headliner as Jimmy Brookens took the lead on the first
lap restart after a turn one tangle eliminated J. C. Walling and Mike
Dicely
and crippled Butch Harrington, Donnie Hendershot and Dan Kanagy. Brookens
held on ahead of Jim Fitz, Jim Young and then Jim Callahan until the white
flag lap when Brookens and Callahan overtook Kanagy going into turn three.
Brookens went past on the inside while Callahan tried the outside and
as the
startled Kanagy moved up Callahan rode over his wheel and into the outside
wall. Through the final two laps Brookens gained a length per lap on Jim
Callahan with Jim Fitz third, Aaron Eichelberger fourth and Ben Murphy
fifth.
"I just wanted to give Callahan room to race," Brookens said
in victory
lane. "Regardless of who comes Sunday for the National, we've got
the best
to beat right here every week." The win marked 12 victories this
season for
Brookens. Eichelberger and Young won the heats.
For his second win of the season in the 270 Sprints, Brian Walker went
tight
to the inside on the start through turns three and four to pass Jim Young
and Mike Dicely. Walker built up leads by as much as a full turn and at
the
finish the front five were Walker, Sean Good, Mike Dicely, Rodney Glass,
and
Matt Miller, and Todd Reusser, Dicely and Walker won the heats. Walker
offered special thanks to Predator Chassis for parts and to his crew and
family for their constant support.
Greg Burd held the Legends lead all the way as challengers overtook him
and
then fell out by the wayside. Ed Wentz, Lawrence Garrison and Jason Ewing
each held second but dropped off the pace and at the finish Burd was all
alone with Denny Rothermel, Ray Swank, Nathan Fisher and Bob Murray
completing the top five. Alan Felix and Ray Swank won the heats. Warren
Ropp
traveled from Iowa to make the INEX points races Friday and Saturday on
the
home track of the three defending national dirt track champions. Jeremy
Crane won the $50 Legends Lotto, which Burd had won earlier in the season.
"I knew I was taking a chance, but it was the only way to beat Bard,"
said
Barry Welch after he went tight to the inside of turn two on lap 14 to
pass
Jerry Bard for the mini stock lead. Through two restarts after that Welch
held the front to take his third win. The front five at the finish were
Welch, Eric Mellott, Bard, Kevin Thomas and Randy Wible. Steve McCartney
and
Welch won the heats.
Derrick Casner started fifth and passed Ray Middaugh for the lead on
lap 11
of the four-cylinder thunder car feature. Then the Mifflintown high school
racer built up leads of as much as two turns on his way to his second
win of
the season. The front five were Casner, Middaugh, Terry Smith, Melvin
Bigler
and Josh Detra. Joe Hawbaker and Bigler won the heats.
Randy Patterson won the single V-8 Street Stock heat, started last, and
romped to his second consecutive feature win. The front five finishers
were
Patterson, Dave Fahnestock, Joe Gearhart, Matt Kauffman, and Blaine Dockery.
The win was Patterson's ninth of the season and sixth at Path Valley.
Coty and Cory Price of Newville won the kids' bike race.

Path Valley Declares All Sprint Monday Rained Out
By Walt Cox
Spring Run, PA_ With rain falling on the track at 9 a.m., Two Wheel
Promotions has declared the annual All Sprints Monday Nationals a rainout
at
the Path Valley Speedway Park. The race will run Sept. 7 with gates open
at
11 a.m. and warm-ups at 12:30.
Racing on the already scheduled rain date, the biggest winged sprint
race of
the year includes the PA 305 Sprints for full sized thrills along with
the
600 Sprints, 270 Sprints and 125 Sprints in the "micro" divisions.
The traditional crowd-pleaser is not a "National Open" because
Path Valley
technical rules apply and it is not "Open" to any outlaw sprint
that wants
the $500 to win. This year the regular Path Valley racing rules will be
followed with pill draws for heats, and then consolation races and features
and each class with more than 40 entries will run a B-Main.
The All Sprints Monday next Sunday will kick off a full fall season of
Friday and Saturday races through the end of October, followed by the
annual
awards banquet Nov. 15. Path Valley will use all of the "TBA"
rain dates for
Friday races through the month of October to make up for a possible record
28 rainouts this season.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north
on PA
Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port
Royal
and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of

Path Valley Feature Roush, Dicely and Glass in Nationals Preview
By Walt Cox

Rodney Glass of Ft. Loudon put his #84 PMP into victory lane.
Spring Run, PA_ In a preview of the Labor Day All-Sprint Monday Nationals,
Jim Roush led the PA 305 Sprints to his first win at the Path Valley
Speedway Park while veterans Mike Dicely in the 600 Sprints and Rodney
Glass
in the 270 Sprints won repeat victories.
Rookie Josh Morrow of Hamburg won his first ever feature less than a
length
ahead of INEX National Dirt Champion Allen Felix in the Central PA Legends
Cars.
Past champions Terry Smith of Willow Hill in the four-cylinder thunder
cars
and Ricky Harper of Three Springs in the mini stocks won the night's two
close stock car races.
Labor Day Monday kicks off the full fall season at Path Valley with the

600 Sprints and 270 Sprints. Gates open at 11 a.m. with warm-ups at 12:30.
In addition to heats and features, B-Main features are promised for each

probable record 27 rainouts, Path Valley will race every Friday night
and
Saturday through the end of October, building the points totals for the
Nov.
15 Awards Banquet.
September 5, a regular Friday night race is scheduled featuring the Legends
Cars in addition to the sprints and stock cars. Next Saturday, Sept. 6,
Path
Valley hosts a regular points race for the karts and quads in the afternoon
and a Strictly Stock race for the junkyard cars that evening. The popular
low budget Strictly Stocks also return to Path Valley Sept. 13 for a
scheduled rain makeup race.
Legendary Jim Kennedy, the "Flyin' Cowboy," won the first 305
Sprints heat
and drew a ten-place inversion pill to put Jim Roush of Lewistown on the
pole and Roush took it from there to scoot ahead of Von McGee and then
defending champion Scott Ellerman as he won his first Path Valley feature
and the second of his career. The front five were Roush, Scott Ellerman,
Von
McGee, Ryan Lynn and Dusty Shatzer and Kennedy and past national champion
Jason Shultz won the heats.
Mike Dicely of Hyper Chassis in Lewisberry took the lead at the line
on lap
one and raced to the 600 Sprints win. "The track was fabulous and
the car
was just great and I need to thank my dad and the crew for all their work
on
the car while I was busy selling parts," Dicely said. Dicely, Jim
Young, Jim
Brookens, Mark Watkins, and Jim Callahan were the first five across the
line
and Young and Brookens won the heats.
Rodney Glass of Ft. Loudon caught Todd Steffy on lap ten and passed him
high
on the outside of turn two on lap 12 as he used the track's comfortable
cushion for extra traction. Glass started seventh. Matt Miller and Steffy
swapped second place three times and at the finish the front five were
Glass, Miller, Steffy, Young, and Dicely. "The competition here is
the
toughest anywhere," Glass said, "and thanks to my dad and crew
I'm lucky to
be competitive."
In the fast and furious Legends feature young Josh Morrow of Hamburg
beat
Allen Felix into turn one on the start and led by as much as a turn before
a
mid-race caution for a burning Kip Erb regrouped the field. Then past
national champion Felix found a better line and worked to the inside of
Morrow, but the rookie won in the outside groove by a few feet. He said
this
is his first season racing.
"I don't know what to say except to thank my dad for all the work
he does
and Harry Garber (another past national champion) for his help and lessons,"
young Morrow said in victory lane. Morrow, Felix, Lawrence Garrison, Greg
Burd, and Randy Fetterolf won the features and Felix and Butch Brough
won
the heats.
Past mini stock repeat champion Ricky Harper started fifth in the feature
and bided his time as Korey Washinger led the first half the race. Then
high
schoolers Washinger and Kyle Wiser spun out of turn four in lap 17 and
after
Washinger was towed off the wall Harper twice pulled alongside Gary Dehart
and passed for the lead on a lap 19 restart. Kevin Thomas worked up from
ninth to take second and Jerry Bard was third, up from the twelfth place
handicap start for winning the week before while Randy Wible and Eric
Mellott filled out the top five. Thomas and Wible won the heats.
Terry Smith started on the pole of the thunder car feature and passed
a
faltering Joe Hawbaker on the inside of turn four on lap nine. With only
one
caution in the first lap, Smith showed his championship form holding off
a
close pack of four with Lyle Barnes, Raymond Middaugh, John Rasp and Jeremy
Truax finishing second through fifth. John Rasp and Melvin Bigler won
the
heats. Smith dedicated his win to the American troops serving in Iraq
and
several other foreign countries and thanked his dad and sponsors including
Smitty's and Husqvarna.

PDKA Completes Hot Fourth Burris Series Kart Race
By Walt Cox

Scott Geesey (41) edges past Clark Simonton in 2-Cycle PDKA feature
action Sunday at Selinsgrove in race four of the six-race PDKA Burris
State Championship Series.
Selinsgrove _ Some 250 of the region’s top kart riders completed
race four of the Pennsylvania Dirt Karters Association (PDKA) Burris State
Championship Series under a blazing sun Sunday at the Selinsgrove Raceway
Park.
The PDKA series of six races are each also WKA Divisional events this
season. Two races remain including a rain makeup from May 18.
Among the day’s most thrilling features was the Jr. Sportsman I
Heavy event that saw five different leaders and eight lead changes during
the 20 laps. In the final lap Mathew Bear who had been running fourth
took the lead going into turn three and won to lead the most important
lap.
:”We saw some exciting racing and some good sportsmanship today,
and we can all be proud of the skills these young people are learning,”
said PDKA President Butch Diller. Flagman Steve Murphy added that the
only drawback to the safe day of racing was, “It was too hot and
that made the karts skid and spin more.”
Matt Cooper of Berryville VA voiced typical sentiments after winning
the Jr. Heavy feature. “They was a comin’ and I was lucky
to stay ahead of Holland. He passed me a couple times.” Cooper won
both the Jr. Lite and Jr. Heavy features and D.J. Holland of Claysburg
finished second in both. Cooper said he races in all of the PDKA events
and that the competition is “a whole lot tougher’ than at
his home tracks.
Another double feature winner who also earned the Fast Time Awards in
two classes was Tyler Bear of Elliottsburg, and he noted that he also
managed the same accomplishment, setting two Fast Times and winning two
features, last year at a Path Valley PDKA race.
Bear was the Junior Heavy state champion in 2002, and this year he is
mainly racing WKA Nationals points events, like the PDKA. Currently he
estimated that he is about tenth in national points. “You don’t
think, just go,” he said of his driving style. Some day he wants
to race Indy Lights, preferring open wheel racing to NASCAR stock cars
or winged sprints because, “It’s faster, and only a little
more dangerous.”
The fifth PDKA race, sponsored by Burris Racing, will be Sept. 14 at
Path Valley Speedway Park where the first two races were held, and the
sixth race will be a rain makeup from May 18, at Selinsgrove, on Sept.
21. Gates open at 7 a.m. with two rounds of practice starting by 10 a.m.
followed by time trials and then the feature events. Points from the best
five of six races are counted toward the state championships.
PDKA racing this season is under the dual sanction of the World Karting
Association and the Burris National Speedway Series and PDKA President
Butch Diller expects that the option of racing in the WKA nationals is
a major asset for the series.
This year PDKA karts race on American made Burris tires in the M-15 A
or B or the SS44 or SS55 series. Champ kart riders must have fire suits
and champ karts must be WKA legal. Riders receive points for each feature
event and those who enter all six races earn 50 bonus points. Karters
who need more information can contact Diller at 717-691-5994 or email
answer21e @ aol.com, or consult the website at padirtkart.com.
In addition to Burris, sponsors of the 2003 series include Silver Spring
Speedway which sponsors the Fast Time Awards and class sponsors including
All Pro Products, Releasomers, JC Specialty, York County Kart Supply,
Viper Racing Engines, Frank Sears Sanitation, Ensor Speed Shop, Elvin’s
Karts and Parts, Kirby’s Speed Secret, Harrisburg Magazine, Awards
& Beyond, Oval Track Concepts, Path Valley Speedway, Little’s
Kart Shop, In Memory of Kevin Gobrecht, Selinsgrove Speedway, Locke’s
Automotive, K&E Motorsports.
Classes and weights for the 2003 WKA Dirt Divisionals sponsored by Burris
Racing are as follows: Jr. Sportsman I Lite, 250; Jr. Sportsman I Heavy,
265; Jr. Sportsman II Lite, 265; Jr. Sportsman II Heavy, 280; Briggs Jr.
Lite, 300; Briggs Jr. Heavy, 320; Briggs Lite, 325; Briggs Medium, 350;
Briggs Heavy, 375; Briggs X-heavy, 400.
Classes also include more than the “flat” stock karts. The
additional classes and weights are: Jr. Sportsman Champ, 315; Jr. Champ,
345; Controlled Med., 350; Controlled Heavy, 375; Briggs Animal, 375;
2-Cycle Yamaha, 350; and also Stock 2-cycle; Unlimited 2-cycle and Kids
Karts.
As in past years, all of those entering the Kids Karts class for the
youngest riders will each receive an award or trophy.

PDKA President Butch Diller congratulates PDKA
Fast Time Awards winners at Selinsgrove August 24.

Path Valley Warns Against Strictly Stock Demo Derby Style Racing
FRAZIER, HECKMAN WIN FIRSTS
By Walt Cox

Steve Frazier of Chambersburg won the first race he ever entered
Saturday in six-cylinder strictly stocks at Path Valley.
Spring Run, PA_ “These (Strictly Stock) races are not demo derbies,
and we are going to penalize anyone who appears to deliberately hit another
driver’s car,” race director John Winsett warned before Saturday
night’s racing began with full fields in all classes.
Chambersburg area drivers won all three strictly stock events and McClure
racer Nathan Fisher won his second feature of the season in the special
Legends Cars race.
The Strictly Stocks at Path Valley were formerly called junkyard cars
and a few of the many rookie drivers managed, despite the warning from
Winsett and use of both the black and yellow flags, to turn the infield
into a junkyard. At one point seven of the 24 six-cylinders that started
the feature were sitting in the infield.
Dave Kitzmiller of Roxbury won his second race ever in the V-8 feature,
with a skilful dash amid lapped car traffic to lead every lap. “I
want to thank my dad, Wayne, for the work he does on the car,” Kitzmiller
said after his first win this season. “This sure is fun and it’s
real racing I can afford.” The front five finishers in the V-8 class
of Strictly Stocks were Kitzmiller, Joe Daywalt, Dustin Brown, Jerry Fleming,
Dave Dunkle, and Tony Verno and Fleming and Daywalt won the heats.
Steve Frazier of Chambersburg passed Dave Ricker in turn two on lap 18
to win the six-cylinder feature. Frazier later said it was his first race
ever and ‘real hard work.’ Ricker had led every lap, lapping
cars in his #99 after lap seven, and Frazier followed a length behind
until he got the chance to take the lead as Ricker spun 360 degrees but
kept going at the end of the race. Second went to Crystal Miller of Bedford,
third to Jeff Swope, fourth to Rob Keller and fifth to Rick Rosenberry.
Shane Ege, Swope and Keller won the heats.
Todd Heckman of Chambersburg, another rookie driver, won the four-cylinder
feature in the final 30 yards by going to the outside coming out of turn
four on the final lap to pass previous race winner Denny Scofield at the
line by about six feet. Tim Riley, Johnny Runk and Chris Chamberlain filled
out the front five and the heat winners were Runk, Lee Young and Heckman.
The Legends Cars, with veteran drivers that included all of last year’s
Dirt Track National Champions, put on an exhibit of racing the way it’s
supposed to be for the Strictly Stock drivers. Fisher took the lead from
Denny Rothermel on lap three with a dive to the inside turn three and
then survived three caution flag restarts for his second win. Rothermel,
Ray Swank, Bryan Swartz, and Josh Morrow completed the front five and
Bob Murray and Fisher won the heats.
About 35 youngsters won the Candy Scramble on the front stretch at intermission,
with a special candy hunt at the concession stand for those four years
old and younger.
The low budget Strictly Stocks race again at Path Valley Sept. 6 with
gates open at 5 p.m. and warm-ups by 6:30.

Path Valley Beats Rain Good with Brookens, Bigler and Bard
By Walt Cox

600 Sprints winner Jimmy Brookens with cousin and Miss Patb Valley
Angie Brookens.
Spring Run, PA_ Threatened by storms on all sides and lightning overhead,
the Path Valley Speedway Park completed seven Pepsi Night features by
10 p.m. and then celebrated the winners with Melvin’s
Auto Repair and Midnight Graphics prizes.
Fittingly, Melvin Bigler of Shippensburg in the four-cylinder thunder
cars and Jerry Bard of Shippensburg in the mini stocks won the night’s
regular features while Joe Hawbaker of Mercersburg won the night’s
makeup thunder car feature from August 8.
The night’s winged sprint thrillers went to defending champion
Jimmy Brookens of Fayetteville in the 600 Sprints and to Sean Good of
Middleburg in the 270 Sprints. Shippensburg ace Randy Patterson won half
a length ahead of Tim Fedder in the V-8 Street Stocks and Greg Burd of
Boiling Springs won his first feature in the Legends Cars.
The race proved a preview for next weekend when the PA 305 Sprints return
to Path Valley for the regular Friday night feature and again on Labor
Day for the annual All Sprint Monday $500 to win races for the 305, 600,
270 and 125 sprints. The Friday Coors Night features Aug. 29 include the
regular divisions and both the 305 Sprints and the Legends Cars and in
addition the regular karts and four wheelers will race Saturday while
the Monday All Sprint National races may draw the biggest field of sprints
seen anywhere in the region this season.
After leading every lap in the 270 Sprints feature, Sean Good revealed
that the #17 he wheeled to the win amid lapped sprints was only completed
at 5 p.m. that afternoon and the night before it was a bare Elite chassis.
“All of our testing was right here tonight in the warm-ups and heats.
We made some adjustments for the smooth, hard track surface and I could
put it wherever I needed to to stay out front.” Brian Marriott passed
Rodney Glass for second on lap 17 and Matt Miller, Glass and Brian Walker
filled out the front five. Chad Myers, Marriott and Glass won the heats,
and the inversion pill draw put Good on the pole.
Defending champion Jim Brookens started third and took the 600 Sprints
lead at the end of the first lap. After a lap three red flag for four
sprints that bent their wings in turn one, the race went non-stop to the
checkers with Brookens weaving ahead of a hard field of past winners.
Second through fifth went to Aaron Eichelberger, Jim Fitz, Jim Young,
and Jim Callahan and Young and Ryan Greth won the heat races.
First time Legends winner Greg Burd passed Josh Morrow on the outside
coming out of turn two on lap seven and led the field, even after a lap
17 restart. He said his father and family are his primary support and
winning on the Path Valley clay ahead of past national champions was the
thrill of a lifetime. The front five were Burd, Allen Felix, Ray Swank,
Josh Morrow and Kip Erb Jr. and the heat winners were Swank, Butch Brough
and Erb.
The thriller of the night was the V-8 Street Stock feature as Randy Patterson
from third took the lead on the second lap and Tim Fedder came from last
to catch up on lap five. With no cautions, the two veterans turned the
event into a match race running at times side-by-side for the final 14
laps. Fedder tried both the outside groove and then the inside but Patterson
pulled away in both the turns and the straights to win by just more than
half the length of his #03. Patterson said it is always a personal best
to beat Fedder. The front five also included Wayne Hawbaker, Aaron Neuder
and Blaine Dockery and Neuder won the heat race.
In the night’s first, makeup, four-cylinder thunder car feature
Joe Hawbaker started fourth and took his third win of the season after
taking the lead from a broken Derrick Casner on lap 17. The front five
in the first feature were Hawbaker, Lyle Barnes, Raymond Middaugh, Chris
Casner and John Rasp.
Melvin Bigler beat pole starter Terry Smith into turn one on the first
lap of the second thunder car feature and then raced ahead of him to the
win with only two cautions to regroup the field. The front five in the
second feature were Bigler, Smith, John Rasp, Jeremy Truax and Vance Kennedy.
Richard Stache and Rasp won the 10-car heats.
In addition to T-shirts and Midnight Graphics decals for the other winners,
Bigler and Jerry Bard provided bags of candy for all the children and
Frisbees autographed by the four-cylinder drivers for the grandstands.
Those in the grandstands who got the Frisbees signed by the night’s
winners won also a free auto inspection and a gift certificate from Melvin’s
Auto Repairs on Route 11 in Shippensburg.
Opening the night, in a wheel to wheel duel coming out of turn four on
the final lap Jerry Bard got past Rickey Harper to win the mini stock
feature by about a length. The front five after 20 laps were Bard, Harper,
Eric Mellott, Gary Dehart and Barry Welch. Bard and Randy Wible won the
heat races and then Bard, as winner of the first heat, drew a ten pill
for inversion, which put him in ninth to start.

Brookens, Callahan and Dicely Win in Path Valley Sprints
By Walt Cox

Tim Fedder won the night's regular V-8 feature.
Spring Run, PA_ Two Wheel Promotions raced through a full program and
completed eight features before 11 p.m. Friday night at the Path Valley
Speedway Park.
In the two rain makeups from August 8, Jim Brookens of Fayetteville led
all
the way in the 600 Sprints and Randy Patterson of Shippensburg used a
lapped
car to take the lead from Chad Lininger of McConnellsburg with two laps
to
go.
One feature remains from the rain shortened Aug. 8 races, for the
four-cylinder thunder cars, and it will be made up on Pepsi Night, next
Friday, August 22. That night is also Public Service Appreciation Night
and
all firemen, police, ambulance crew members and medics and anyone in similar
related fields of public benefit with ID will be admitted free of charge
to
the grandstands.
The regular night's 600 Sprints feature went to Jim Callahan of McVeytown
who led every lap and the 270 Sprints feature went to Mike Dicely of
Lewisberry who got the lead from Sean Good on lap ten. Past champion Lynn
Knepper of Somerset won in the Dwarf Cars and Barry Welch of Three Springs
won his second feature in three weeks in the mini stocks while the night's
second V-8 Street Stock winner was Tim Fedder of Newport.
The upset of the nigh was in the four-cylinder thunder cars as Lyle Barnes
of Chambersburg started on the pole and led every lap for his first ever
Path Valley victory. Barnes led by a full turn before a lap 11 caution
and
then had to hold off Melvin Bigler, up from a ninth place start, through
the
final laps. John Rasp and Bigler won the heats and Rasp drew a ten-car
inversion pill to put Barnes on the pole. The front five finishers were
Barnes, Bigler, Keith Armolt, Dave Ricker, and Terry Smith.
The night's first 600 Sprints feature resumed from where it was curtailed
by
rain the week before and defending champion Jimmy Brookens romped to the
win
ahead of Duane Harbaugh, Donnie Hendershot, Jim Young, and Rod Schell
in the
front five. Only one lap seven caution regrouped the field.
The makeup in the V-8 Street Stocks, which also ran before the night's
regular heat races, proved a cliffhanger as Chad Lininger led from the
pole
position and Randy Patterson pulled alongside him the first time on lap
six.
Twice more Patterson tried to pass on the outside and with no cautions
to
close up the field the two encountered Ron Myers Jr. on lap 16 and on
lap 18
Patterson got past on the outside as Lininger worked for the shorter inside
groove. The front five were Patterson, Lininger, Jeff Johnson, Dave
Fahnestock, and Aaron Neuder.
In the night's regular 600 Sprints feature Callahan had to stand off
Mike
Dicely through the first half and then Donnie Hendershot after Dicely
spun
in turn four for the race's only caution. Hendershot caught up on laps
11
and 16 but never got past. The front five were Callahan, Hendershot, Duane
Harbaugh, Ryan Greth, and Jim Young, and Dicely, Greth and Jim Brookens
won
the heats.
"It's just as good to win here as to win a national event,"
said Mike Dicely
of his wins two weeks ago in the NMMA Nationals in Missouri. Dicely somehow
got past Sean Good on a lap ten restart and held on through a lap 18 caution
for the win. The front five were Dicely, Good, Brian Walker, Matt Miller,
and Ray Peters. Last year's Rookie of the Year, Josh Dressler, won the
consi
and the heats went to Chad Myers, Walker and Dicely.
Barry Welch, defying a 'Hill Valley Jinx' in the mini stocks, got a ten-car
inversion pill draw to start on the pole and then scooted ahead of Kevin
Thomas and Ricky Harper to the checkers. Welch, Thomas, Harper, Eric
Mellott, and Ed Kirby were the front five finishers and Steve McCartney
and
Jerry Bard won the heats.
>From fourth, Lynn Knepper caught pole starter Jeff Barclay on lap
seven and
never looked back for his Dwarf Cars win. The final 11 laps went non-stop
and the front five across the line were Knepper, Wes Zimmerman, Jeff
Barclay, Josh Sigman, and Frank Dunkle while Sigman and Knepper picked
up
the heat wins.
Frequent winner Tim Fedder eked out a win in the night's second V-8 Street
Stock main, but praised "That guy in the 75" Chad Lininger from
the winners
circle for clean, hard racing. As the final ten laps raced non-stop,
Lininger twice pulled within view of Fedder's #34. Third through fifth
were
Randy Patterson, Ron Myers Jr., and Wayne Hawbaker, and Patterson won
the
single heat.
