Wheeler Waltzes to STARS BoB John Bradshaw Fall Classic Memorial at "The Pond"Junction City, KY- After battling occasional rain showers during the evening, the 13th Annual Fall Classic-A Tribute and Memorial to John Bradshaw, was completed and Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY picked up his fourth win and third STARS Battle of the Bluegrass at "The Pond" this season as he led all 40 laps in the Fall Classic main event. Wheeler jumped to the lead at the drop of the green flag, but would have his pace slowed on lap 2 when Michael Wooldridge contacted the concrete wall in turn three. On the restart, Wheeler would again scoot away, with Scott James, Aaron Hatton, Mike Marlar, and Timmy Yeager giving chase. Hatton would pressure James and eventually grab the second slot, while Michael Chilton would pressure Yeager for fifth and would also advance a position before caution waved on lap 11 as Bobby Carrier, Jr. looped his mount exiting turn two. The caution would have action again hot behind Wheeler and Hatton and James continued to battle for second, Victor Lee and Marlar would begin to mix it up for fifth, as Chilton would work his way into fourth. The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway In Action With Regular Show on August 15Junction City, KY-August 10- New promoter Jerry Denson will present a regular racing program at The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY this Friday night, August 15, featuring a regular show for Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, and Chevettes. Of note, the Modifieds will not be sanctioned by any organization. The Late Models will race 30 laps, with the winner taking home $1,000 to win. Also on the racing card will be a 20 lap, $500 to win Modified feature, plus a 15 lap Sportsman feature and a 12 lap Chevette feature. Last week was the first week of action at The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway since the untimely death of former promoter John Bradshaw back in May. A total of 80 race cars were in attendance, only to have Mother Nature spoil the racing action with rain setting in during Modified time trials. All general admission tickets and pit arm bands from last week will be good for this week. Activities will get underway on Friday, August 15, with pit gates opening at 4:00, with main gates opening at 5:00. Hot laps will begin around 7:00, with time trials at 7:30, and racing set for the green flag around 8:15. Adult general admission is $10, with pit passes $25. Again, if you were in attendance last week, those tickets and pit passes are good for this week.
Mother Nature Spoils Reopening of The Legendary Ponderosa SpeedwayJunction City, KY-August 8- With 80 race cars on the grounds and a great turnout of race fans, new promoters Jerry and Mary Denson were set to reopen The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY with a bang, but Mother Nature had other ideas and would spoil "The Pond's" reopening night. Victor Lee of Stanford, KY was top qualifier among the Late Models on hand with a lap of 13.941 seconds. As the sixth of the 28 Modifieds that were on hand timed in, the rains began to slowly fall. After a 20 minute wait, track officials put the cars back on the track and began the wheel-packing process and just as the track was about to come back in, rain showers returned, forcing track officials to cancel the racing program due to unsafe race conditions, plus track officials did not want to keep race fans and race teams at the track to an unreasonable late hour. Race fans and teams that were in attendance need to keep their admission tickets and armbands as their raincheck to get them into the track next week. Racing action will continue at The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway next Friday night, August 15, with a regular program for the Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, and Chevettes. Pit gates open at 4:00, with main gates opening at 5:00. Hot Laps begin around 7:00, with time trials around 7:30, with racing set for 8:15. All times are EDT. New promoter Jerry Denson would like to thank all race fans and race teams for their support of his first night as a race promoter and would like to invite everyone out for a Friday night of racing at The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY.
Racing Action Returns to The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway on Friday night, August 8Junction City, KY-August 1- The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY is set to reopen its gates and continue the Friday night tradition established earlier this season of providing great Friday night race action to drivers and race fans alike. Jerry and Mary Denson of Yosemite, KY have taken over the promotional reigns of the 31 year old facility that sits on the Boyle/Lincoln county lines just minutes from beautiful Danville, KY that was left dormant after the untimely death of former promoter John Bradshaw. "We want to take our team and continue to build on the groundwork by Johnny and his staff and the Ponderosa and make it the place to be on Friday nights", stated new promoter Jerry Denson. The racing program on Friday nights will consist of Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Sportsman, and Chevettes. The first night of racing action will be August 8 and will be a regular show for all four weekly divisions. An entire schedule for the remainder of 2003 will be put out at a later date, but will be put together as quickly as possible. Activities will get underway each Friday with pit gates opening at 4:00, and main gates opening at 5:00. Drivers meetings will be at 6:45, hot laps will be at 7:00, time trials at 7:30, with racing set to go green around 8:15. Adult general admission will be $10 for adults, with children ages 7 to 12 being $5 and children age 6 and under free with a paid adult. Pit passes will be $25.
New Promoters Set to Run The Legendary Ponderosa SpeedwayJunction City, KY-May 30- The untimely passing away of former track promoter John Bradshaw left The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway without a promoter and somewhat of an uncertain future, but things are beginning to look brighter for the 31 year old facility with each passing day. Bill and Beverly Pierce, along with daughter Kim Rayburn and her husband Donald, will be taking over the promotional reigns of the track located on the Boyle/Lincoln County line just minutes from historic downtown Danville, KY. According to information provided from Mr. Pierce, “all the paperwork on the track should be final by around the 13th of June, and we will try to be up and racing by either the 20th or 27th of June.” Mr. Pierce concluded, “We intend to build upon the foundation already put in place by Mr. Bradshaw and his team and want to continue to provide racers and fans with a great form of sports entertainment every Friday night.” Some additions and/or changes to the schedule may be made and will be announced at a later time. The $1,200 to win UMP Modified show that was scheduled for June 6 has been cancelled and hopefully can be rescheduled as has the 8th Annual Pete Abell Memorial scheduled for June 13 with the STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Arizona Sport Shirts and hopefully this event can be rescheduled as well.

Johnny Wheeler Takes Second Career STARS Battle of the Bluegrass Win at Ponderosa
Junction City, KY--Johnny Wheeler from Campbellsville, KY picked up his second career STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series Presented by Arizona Sport Shirts on Friday Night at the Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY as he would take the $3000 to win Spring into Spring 40. It was the first ever visit by Kentucky's Premier Dirt Late Model Sanctioning Body to the John Bradshaw promoted facility. Wheeler drove the Larry Yantz Racing, Clayton Homes, Crossland Homes, Luv Homes, Classic Homes, Yantz Mobile Home Services, Legend's Inc., D&S Remodeling, VP Racing Fuels, PPM, Cornett Thunder Engines, C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo #57 to the winners circle leading all 40 laps. Eddie Carrier Jr of Ona, WV the defending STARS Battle of the Bluegrass Champion finished second in the Carl Grover Motorsports Rocket Ford Taurus. Coming home in third was Mike Marlar in the Wilson's Service Center C.J. Rayburn Race Cars Grand Prix, fourth was Mike Jewell in the Morgan Foods Mastersbilt Grand Prix and completing the top five was Timmy Yeager in the Dale and Anita Clark Racing Mastersbilt Ford Taurus. Wheeler would grab the lead at the start of the 40 lap main event with Eddie Carrier, Jr. immediately taking second place with Scott James moving to third followed by Jesse James Lay and Timmy Yeager. The first move in the top five was by Mike Marlar who passed Yeager for fifth on lap six. The first caution flag of the race flew on the 13th lap for Bobby Carrier Jr who pitted with a flat tire. The would be a sign of things to come as five more cautions would dot the remainder of the race. Apparently there were pieces of debris embedded in the race track that caused some tires to puncture. During the first caution the cars of Darrell Lanigan, Mike Marlar and Lay all pitted for flat tires. The race would go six more laps under green when Brad Neat slowed with tire problems. At this time the track was checked and a few pieces of debris were removed from within the race track. At the 20 lap mark which was the halfway point of the race Wheeler was still in front just as he had been from the beginning with Eddie Carrier Jr., Scott James and Timmy Yeager the top four cars. But James' fate would be next as a flat tire would take him to the pits for a quick tire change on the 21st lap. That moved Yeager into third with Mike Jewell now fourth and Richard Smith running in fifth. Marlar who had pitted early on was on the move as he stormed through the field to move into the top five past Smith on lap 26. Marlar, Jewell and Yeager then set up a terrific race for third that would last until the checker fell. Up front it was all Wheeler as the 39 year old driver was in complete control and most assuredly hoping and praying that nothing like what had happened to some of his competitors would prevent him from winning the race. Wheeler's prays were answered as he would go on to get the checkered flag first scoring his second career BoB win. Eddie Carrier Jr would run second the entire distance for his best finish of the season. The race for third came down to the final tour around the track with Marlar getting the spot just ahead of Jewell and Yeager who touched on the final turn. Completing the top ten were Richard Smith, Scott James, Tyrel Todd, Michael Chilton and Jim Curry. There were 34 entries on hand with Tyrel Todd taking the Racing Optics Fast time at 13.97 seconds. Heat race winners were Scott James, Johnny Wheeler, Eddie Carrier Jr and Jesse James Lay. The two AFCO B-Main winners were Bobby Wolter Jr and Darrell Lanigan. Official Summary Friday Night, May 2, 2003 Racing Optics Fast Time: Tyrel Todd 13.97 Racing Optics Time Trials 1. #14-Tyrel Todd-Eubank, KY 13.97
Wheeler Wins STARS BoB Spring Into Spring 40 at The Legendary Ponderosa SpeedwayJunction City, KY-May 2- After Mother Nature produced a one hour and five minute delay at the end of Late Model time trials with some rain, the first ever visit of the STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Arizona Sport Shirts to The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY would proceed and saw opening night winner Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY score the $3,000 payday and his second career STARS BoB win after leading the entire 40 lap distance and surviving six caution flags and several flat tires by fellow competitors. Wheeler and 2002 STARS BoB champion Eddie Carrier, Jr. would bring the field to chief starter Noel Hargis and the green flag with Wheeler immediately taking the lead with Carrier, Jr., Scott James, Jesse James Lay and Aaron Hatton in tow. Wheeler would poke his lead to almost a half-straightaway by lap 5, with Hatton, Timmy Yeager, and Mike Marlar in a three way dance for the fifth slot. The big mover early on was 2nd AFCO Racing Products B-Main winner Darrell Lanigan, as he started 14th, but would be up to eighth by lap 10. The first caution waved on lap 13 as Bobby Carrier, Jr. slowed with a flat left rear tire, and under the caution, Lanigan, Marlar, and Lay would all pit with flat tires as well and return. Back under green, Wheeler continued his torrid pace at the front, with Eddie, Jr. still second, then James, while Yeager, Mike Jewell, and Kevin Claycomb began to battle for fifth. Brad Neat would slow with a flat right rear tire on lap 19, with 8th place running Aaron Hatton also pitting for a flat tire as well. Track series officials checked the track at this point, but could find nothing of concern. Back under green, Wheeler jumped away again, only to have the caution fly again on lap 21 for Bobby Wolter, Jr. who had a flat right rear tire and on the restart, third place running James would pull to a stop with a flat right rear tire, change it, and continue. The flat tire fever would also bite now fourth place Claycomb as he would cause the caution with a flat right rear on lap 24. Wheeler and Eddie, Jr. would pull away again on the restart and try to settle the last 15 circuits among themselves, only to see the final caution wave for Brad Neat who slowed with mechanical woes on the backchute with 13 laps remaining. The remainder of the race would go green with Wheeler pulling away and taking the win aboard the Larry Yantz owned Clayton Homes of Kentucky/Luv Homes/ Crossland Homes/Classic Homes/Legends, Inc./PPM/VP Race Fuels/Blackstar Graphics/ American Race Tires #57 C.J. Rayburn Race Car, Cornett Race Engine powered, American Race Tire shod mount. Eddie, Jr. would take second, while Marlar would come from the rear of the field and make a last lap pass of Jewell and Yeager to take third, with Jewell getting by Yeager off of turn four to take fourth. Completing the top ten were Richard Smith, James, Tyrel Todd, Michael Chilton, and Jim Curry. Thirty-four Late Models from four states were in attendance, with Tyrel Todd the Racing Optics fast qualifier with a 13.97 second lap. Heats were won by James, Wheeler, Eddie Carrier, Jr., and Lay, while the AFCO Racing Products B-Mains were scored by Wolter, Jr. and Lanigan. Ronnie Smith and Brandon Hardgrove were provisional starters. Tommy Bailey of Corbin, KY drove his Lightning Chassis entry to the lead for all 20 laps of the UMP Modified feature to pick up the win behind the wheel of his Barton’s Panels/ Young’s Auto Body sponsored #11 entry. Tom Curtsinger, Rick Hines, and Doug Tarter would all battle hard for the runner-up spot in the waning laps of the event, with Curtsinger taking second, followed by Hines and Tarter, with Jeff Rawlings completing the top five. David McWilliams would head up the second five, followed by David Webb, Jerry Rutherford, Josh Belcher, and Robbie Turner. Webb was top qualifier, Tarter won the dash, with Curtsinger taking the heat win. Wheeler, York, Elder, and Stewart Open The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway for 2003Junction City, KY-April 18- New promoter John Bradshaw and his staff held the 2003 season opener Friday night at The Legendary Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY with a good field of cars and a wonderful turnout of race fans that saw Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY win the Late Model feature, Timmy York of Greensburg, KY win the UMP Modified feature, Brian Elder of Parkville, KY win the Sportsman feature, and Eddie Stewart of Manchester, KY win the Chevette feature. The 30 lap Late Model feature would see Timmy Yeager and Bobby Carrier, Jr. bring the field to green, with the duo going side-by-side for the lead until the first caution waved on lap 4 as fast qualifier Victor Lee slowed on the backchute with reported fuel pump problems. The restart would see Carrier, Jr. grab the lead with Yeager nipping right at his heels until disaster struck for Yeager when he clipped the inside berm of the track in turn three and his mount looped and completely went airborne for a moment and ending his night with suspension damage. Carrier, Jr. would now have Johnny Wheeler to contend with for the top spot, while young Michael Chilton was now the man on the move after starting ninth was up to fourth when the caution flew on lap 9 as fifth place Larry Martin, Jr. spun exiting turn two. The attempted restart would see now fifth place running Bobby Wolter, Jr. spin in turn two, and as all this took place, leader Carrier, Jr. would pull pitside with a flat right rear tire, but would change it and return. The final 15 circuits became a battle of attrition, with the final caution waving on lap 16 for Matthew Cottongim, who parked his mount against the concrete in turn two. After a lengthy caution period, action would resume with Wheeler still the leader, but Chilton was bringing the heat to second place running Joey Daniel when Daniel faltered off of turn two and pulled his entry to rest in the infield. The final 8 circuits would see Wheeler control the way aboard the Larry Yantz owned Clayton Homes/Luv Homes/Crossland Homes/Classic Homes/Legends Inc./Yantz Mobile Home Service/D and S Remodeling/PPM/Blackstar Graphics/VP Race Fuels #57 C.J. Rayburn Race Car, Cornett Race Engines, American Race Tires shod mount. Chilton would take runner-up honors, with Carrier, Jr., Wolter, Jr., and Jonathan Durrett completing the top five. Yeager would win the dash, with Brad Neat taking the heat win. The UMP Modified feature would go 20 laps in distance and when all was said and done, Timmy York survived several caution flags to score the victory behind the wheel of his Hickerson Trucking/Morgan Motorsports #21 Lightning Chassis entry. York would have to contend with Doug Tarter for much of the contest, but Tarter would settle for the second spot at the finish of the event. Jerry Rutherford, Stacey York, and Scott Anderson would complete the top five. Jimmy Sizemore, Warren Hickerson, and Adam Gootee would take sixth through eighth as they were the only other entries to finish the feature event. York would be top qualifier and win the dash, while Kevin Hall was the winner of the heat race event. The Sportsman division would see its feature event captured by Brian Elder as only four cars took the green flag in the event and by the halfway point, Elder’s Cliff Shafer owned, Gilbralter Chimney sponsored #29 was the only car left running and he would take the win. Robert Cocanougher, Rick King, and Chris Garten would complete the feature finish rundown. Cocanougher grabbed the heat win. The 12 lap Chevette feature saw Eddie Stewart of Manchester, KY score the feature race victory aboard his Cornett’s Auto/Highway 80 Auto Color #z9 entry. Shane Irvin would challenge often, but would have to settle for second, with Larry Foley, Jr., Larry McRoberts, and Dusty Maybrier completing the top five.
