BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - On Saturday, May 17th JP Morgan a second season
veteran of the Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) took the opening
race of the 2003 season. Morgan took the green flag from his pole
position and after a few loose corners showed the way to the rest of the
field to the checker flag.
"The Barber Motorsports Park is a very technical track, I really
enjoyed
the challenge of this new venue", Morgan explained. "I'm an
oval-track
driver by all my experience, but I just think that this track is new to
everybody I guess that we had everything put together for this race but
it might be different for the next race."
The first lap of the race had intense battles through the first five
corners resulting in the lots of position changes. The race ran green
until a crash by Roger Reuse on lap 23.
Morgan finished 1.361 seconds over second place Chris Mitchum and 2.924
seconds over Marshall McLeod in third.
In the driver interview session second place finisher Chris Mitchum
stated, "This was a wonderful weekend the spectators were on their
feet
as we came around the track proving that they do like stock cars in
Alabama. I think that it's great that SCCS was the first professional
spectator race at Barber Motorsports Park."

The Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) is the most exciting
professional touring motorsports race series to hit the East Coast in
years. The Stock Car Championship Series combines the excitement of
stock car racing with the driving challenge of world class road course
venues. SCCS is America's Premier stock car road racing series.
“We are excited to be part of the “At the Park” weekend and know that the spectators will enjoy the thrill of watching our high-powered cars on this new road course,” stated Dan Fite, VP operations for SCCS. We will be at the Barber Motorsports Park two times this year and our drivers are looking forward to tackling this new course. During our first visit our SCCS stock cars will join the sports cars of Grand American Road Racing Association to provide a weekend full of exciting road racing.”
Chris Mitchum, the 2002 SCCS Series Champion stated that the Mitchum Motorsports team is “expecting a very exciting season. We are ready to start the 2003 season with the support of Koons Automotive Group, BG Products, and Late Model Racer magazine. I expect that the increased size and talent of the series this year will make repeating as champions twice as hard, and we expect to be up to the challenge. Running the opening race at a new facility [Barber] will make for a very tight field as it takes away any home track advantage. Each of the teams will have to get their cars set up early so that drivers can concentrate on learning the track.”
The Stock Car Championship Series cars will take to the track for practice on Friday May 16 with qualifying and race on Saturday May 17.
Additional information can be found on the Stock Car Championship Series web site at; www.sccsracing.com. Dan Fite can be reached at danf@sccsracing.com or (931) 920-6363

Kershaw, SC - The first race of the 2003 Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) is just around the corner but some of the teams had a warm up test session on Friday, April 25th. Wet weather conditions would have made Friday's test a bust for most stock car series at Carolina Motorsports Park, but the SCCS teams were able to get a full day of testing.
The teams started off the day with steady rain which slowed as the morning progressed. The rain stopped around mid day, allowing the track to dry before resuming mid-afternoon. This weather combination provided excellent testing conditions for both wet and intermediate set-ups.
“SCCS cars will run in the rain," stated Lynnie Doughton SCCS commissioner, "Our plans have always been to compete in wet conditions. We were blessed with dry weekends all last season and never had a good opportunity to test these cars in the rain. We are really happy with the data we gathered during this test.”
The Stock Car Championship Series cars will open its 2003 season at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL as part of the At the Park weekend with the Grand American series on May 16-18, 2003.
Rocky Mount, VA - After a four-month off season, the Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) is poised for an exciting second season in 2003. With a schedule including two races with the Grand American Rolex Series, SCCS is seeking exposure and finding it.
“It is key that SCCS events include spectators,” says Dan Fite, VP Operations for SCCS. “This series was designed to bring new fans to road racing and to do that, we must have spectator events.”
The challenge of putting together a spectator-friendly schedule resulted in race venues that were dramatically different from those of the inaugural season.
“We made the decision in 2002 not to release the schedule until all of our 2003 dates were finalized. While we were disappointed that we couldn’t reach agreement with some of the venues that were popular with drivers last year, we are extremely excited that this year’s season will provide terrific competition that will highlight driver skills and team preparation,” Fite said. “I really feel we have raised the bar from last year’s season.”
SCCS Commissioner Lynnie Doughton pointed out that, although running club-type events such as those in the 2002 season makes for easier scheduling, “that type of event has no benefit to our sponsors, our team’s sponsors or ultimately to the series.”
SCCS will certainly increase its exposure with this year’s schedule. Events at two new facilities, Barber Motorsports Park-in Birmingham, AL and BeaveRun Motorsports Park-in Wampum, PA, along with the Grand American events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Barber Motorsports Park will place SCCS in front of thousands of sports car fans and bring stock car fans to the road courses.
Where does SCCS go from here? “We are committed to make SCCS the premier professional road racing series in the country” said Doughton. “We knew all along that stock cars had a place in road racing. We have secured quality dates and have lots of new cars being built. Now we focus on the challenges ahead and continue to make steady progress.” If SCCS has been this successful in a tough market, the potential for future success is certainly exciting.
CHRIS MITCHUM - 2002 SCCS CHAMPION
Nikon digital photography by David Allio - http://www.davidallio.com

BRASELTON, GA - Chris Mitchum, a 26 year-old road racer
from Reston, VA,
entered the debut season of the Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS)
expecting to be the second driver on an under-funded race team. By the
final race of the season, he had climbed from last-to-first in the points
to become the first champion on the new stock car road racing series.
The 2002 SCCS driving title is Mitchum's first professional
motorsports
championship. A 1988 James Madison University graduate, with a BS in
Entrepreneurship, Mitchum began going to road races with his father, a
driver and mechanic, at the age of five. By age 12 Chris was an
over-the-wall mechanic.
Chris began driving in the Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Series
(MARRS) at
Summit Point, WV. Since then, he has honed his skills as an endurance
road
racer by competing in the 24-Hours of Daytona and the 12-Hours of Sebring.
"We started out the year hoping to be a two-car team.
I wasn't even
supposed to be the number one driver," Mitchum said. "After
the first
race, we realized that the Stock Car Championship Series had so much
promise we decided to invest all of our efforts to it. We weren't positive
that our budget could get us wins. But from the very start our goal was
to
win this championship."
Mitchum's climb to the championship began at the bottom.
Following a
last-place finish in a rented car in the first race of the season, the
Moonshine Run at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC, Chris began
a
string of top five finishes in his family-owned Koons Chevrolet Monte
Carlo. Entering the eighth and final event of the season, the DRP Holiday
Run at Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA, Chris was tied with three-time SCCS
winner John Martin III for the series points lead.
"As the year went on, when we got to the track it
seemed that we had a good
car. It was always competitive but never the fastest car on the track,"
Chris said. "We had a competitive car at every race and we raced
as hard
as we could at every race. The first lap on the track this weekend - the
car was the best it's ever been. That's exactly what we needed to win
this
championship."
In a series that combined racers from ovals as well as
road racing, it was
not a surprise that a road racer won the first championship. But, the
champion was surprised at how quickly the oval racers became competitive
at
turning left and right.
"I started the season thinking that we (road racers)
would be leaps and
bounds beyond the oval guys. But, I discovered that the oval racers have
competitive pieces and it doesn't take much for them to learn how to turn
right," Chris said. "I started driving momentum cars and got
used to
keeping up momentum in the corners. That's important in these SCCS
cars. I'm used to an endurance race - six hours or more. All our team
did was to break down these features into segments just like an endurance
race. The key is to know when to press an advantage on a road course."
Chris Mitchum will receive the winner's share of over
$20,000 in point fund
awards as the 2002 Stock Car Championship Series driving champion. The
SCCS banquet is to be held in January, 2003.

RON FARISS WINS SCCS HOLIDAY RUN

BRASELTON, GEORGIA - Veteran road racer #22 Ron Fariss
earned his fourth
Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) win of the 2002 season with a
dominating performance at Road Atlanta in the DRP Holiday Run on Sunday,
December 1. Fariss took the lead at the green flag by winning a drag race
to the first turn of the 2.54-mile road course with fastest qualifier
#11
J.P. Morgan.
BRASELTON, GEORGIA - Veteran road racer Ron Fariss earned
his fourth Stock
Car Championship Series (SCCS) win of the 2002 season with a dominating
performance at Road Atlanta in the DRP Holiday Run. Fariss took the lead
at the green flag by winning a drag race to the first turn of the 2.54-mile
road course with fastest qualifier J.P. Morgan.
"It was like we were slow coming to the green flag.
The starter came out
and threw his arm out before he dropped the flag. When he came out with
it, I took off," Fariss explained. "I probably had a better
gear for that
slow of a start."
Once in the lead, Fariss was never challenged in the caution-free
stock car
race. After turning the fastest lap of the race on lap two, Fariss worked
at slowly building an invincible lead.
"This race track really taxes everything you've got,"
the winner said.
"It's an easy track to overdrive."
Fariss had previous experience on the 12-turn road course
as a driver in
the GT1 sports car class. He liked the SCCS Late Model Stock Cars better
on the fast track.
"I've been impressed," Fariss admitted. "This
little SCCS car handles
better than my GT1 car. They're a lot more forgiving."

BRASELTON, GEORGIA - #6 Chris Mitchum and #11 J.P. Morgan
battled
throughout the DRP Holiday Run on Sunday afternoon, December 1, at Road
Atlanta. Morgan, the fastest qualifier for the Stock Car Championship
Series (SCCS) eventually passed for second place at the end of the
race. Mitchum's third place finish was enough to earn him the SCCS points
championship.
Behind Fariss, polesitter J.P. Morgan and Chris Mitchum
exchanged second
place several times in the tightest battle for position on the
racetrack. Morgan won the battle for second, but Mitchum earned enough
points with a third-place finish to capture the season-long SCCS points
race.
"We started out the year hoping to be a two-car team.
I wasn't even
supposed to be the number one driver," the 26 year-old Mitchum
said. "After the first race we realized that the Stock Car Championship
Series had so much promise we decided to invest all of our efforts to
it. Our main goal was to win the championship."
Mitchum won the championship by 15 points over Fariss.
John Martin, who
had entered the race tied for the points lead with Mitchum, was third,
five
points back.

JP Morgan of Ether, North Carolina Moves Up from his Fourth Place Starting Position for the Win
SUMMIT POINT WV - JP Morgan of Ether, North Carolina moved
up from his
fourth place starting position for his first Stock Car Championship
Series victory during West Virginia Wild and Wonderful Fall Classis on
Sunday November 3 at the Summit Point Raceway. The weather forecast for
the race was scheduled for cold temperatures and precipitation but the
rain/snow never showed up for the weekend's event. Sunny but cold
conditions did not prevent JP Morgan from setting the fastest lap of the
race in his J&R Chevrolet Monte Carlo on lap 10 of the 30 lap race
during his battle with Kenny Liesfeld.
John Martin III and Chris Mitchum finished in 2nd and
3rd positions
after moving up through the field running nose to tail through most of
the second half of the race.
A lap 2 on track incident sent the front row of Ron Fariss
and Jeff
Werth backward into the field. Werth battled his way back to a 4th place
finish and Fariss into13th. Kenny Liesfeld had an impressive run going
until an off course view of turn 5 took him from the lead but he managed
to maintain a 5th place finish.

ROCKY MOUNT, VA - John Martin III, a 34 year-old racer
from Cornelius ,
NC is looking forward to running his TNR Motorsports Chevrolet Monte
Carlo again at Summit Point Raceway. " The first time we were at
Summit
was only the second time we were in race trim with our car. I had a
pretty good run going until a off in corner 10 had me fighting back to
a
fourth place finish in June", stated Martin. We believe that we have
the
package together for this weekend".
John has 3 victories this year in the Stock Car Championship
Series(SCCS) at Lowe's, Atlanta and most recently at the VIRginia
International Speedway and currently sits in the third position in the
standings.

Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) and The West
Virginia
Motorsports Council announce Eric Denemark as Grand Marshall
The Stock Car Championship Series (SCCS) and The West
Virginia
Motorsports Council announced today that Eric Denemark, Executive
Director of the Council, has been named Grand Marshall for the 2-day
Stock Car Championship Series event to be held at Summit Point Raceway
in Berkeley County West Virginia on November 2nd and 3rd. The SCCS is
a
new and rapidly growing Eastern Seaboard-based series that features
full-bodied, late model stock cars racing exclusively on road courses.
In this, its inaugural season, the series has already competed at such
famous venues as Carolina Motorsports Park, Lowe's' Motor Speedway,
Atlanta Motor Speedway and Virginia International Raceway in addition
to
an earlier event at Summit Point. There series will wind up the season
at Road Atlanta.
"I'm flattered to have been asked to serve in this
capacity for this
exciting new series," Denemark said. "This is a bit of a switch
in that
road course aficionados are used to seeing open wheel and sports car
type vehicles competing on this type course. These full-bodied, late
model stockcars lend a 'Bud at the Glen' feel to the event."
According to Dan Fite, SCCS Director of Strategic Partnerships,
this
professional touring series is designed to be competitor-friendly and
hold costs down making the racing affordable for many who see the
expense of other series as no longer feasible. "We are extremely
pleased
with the level of competition and the fan support for the series,"
Fite
said. "We utilize a crate motor program which allows competitors
to use
either a Dodge, Ford or Chevy crate motor with a cost under $5,000. A
number of off-the-shelf chassis are approved and the body panels are
fiberglass. We are looking forward to returning to Summit Point and are
extremely pleased that Eric has consented to serve as our Grand
Marshall."
The course at Summit Point is a challenging 10-turn, two
mile asphalt
road racing circuit set in the pastoral Shenandoah Valley, located only
70 miles from the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD metropolitan areas.
The course combines slow and fast bends, with a 3,000 ft straightaway
and considerable vertical relief. It is one of the most challenging
circuits in the nation. Motorsports events occur every weekend from
March through November, with various BSR (Bill Scott Racing) schools
occupying weekdays. Bill Scott owns this beautiful facility which boasts
multiple racing circuits and includes skid pads, differential pavement
pads and weapons firing and explosive ordnance training ranges. During
the week for BSR, Inc. conducts the premier specialty drivers programs
in the nation. These courses include Accident Avoidance Driver Training,
Security Driver Training, and Police Driver Training, as well as a
variety of Recreational Driving Schools where you can have fun on the
track and learn high performance driving techniques. Summit Point's
clientele reads like a who's who of federal and state governmental law
enforcement agencies.
"From all indications, the SCCS is a neat, new series,"
Denemark said.
"Fields are already in the 20-car range which makes for great
competition for the participants and exciting racing action for the
fans. I would encourage any and all race fans to visit Summit Point
Raceway on November 2nd and 3rd to experience the Stock Car Championship
Series first hand."
