A number of track regulars from all six classes have entered this fun show in the past.

Johnny Chastain Powers Way To Jacky Jones $2000 Win

On Fan Appreciation Night, Johnny Chastain blew away the competition in the Jacky Jones Race 4 Literacy 40-lap Special. Starting on the pole with a 13.527 clocking, Chastain jumped to the lead in Randall Twiggs powerful Chevy and held on for a ten-car lead most of the night. Chastain picked up $2000 for his flag to flag win.
A strong battle between Russell Thomas, Shawn Chastain, Shane Tankersley, Barry Rogers, Kip Cochran, Hot Rod Lamance, Royce Bray and Chuck Southard was action packed as the top ten finishers in the 16-car field battled for position all night.
The track was fast with 10 cars qualifying in the 13-second range on the 3/8s high-banked clay oval. Chastain picked up a $250 bonus from Murphy Glass and Mirror for his fast time of the night. Thomas, Tankersley and S. Chastain were all just a fraction behind J. Chastain in a bid for the bonus.
The fast six qualifiers raced in the Murphy Pizza Hut Dash For Cash, which saw two restarts, one of them putting the front row of Doug English and Johnny Russell to the rear of the field. S. Chastain and J. Chastain held off the challenge of Tankersley, English, Russell and Rogers in that order. S. Chastain picked up $500 for the 10-lap event.
Peachtree driver Jamie Oliver picked up the $600 win in only the second run in his new Limited Sportsman racer. Jonathan Davenport, Danny Ledford, Galen Robinson and Ellis Parker rounded out the top five. Action in the feature was crowd-pleasing as 18 cars started the feature.
Blue Rider driver Tim Cochran who finished second protested apparent Modified Hobby winner Arlen Ledford. When Ledford elected not to tear down, the win went to Cochran and moved the remaining drivers up one spot. Jason Payne, Brandon Dills, Mark Hedden and Jason Mingus rounded out the top five.
Peachtree’s Michael Anderson made it to victory lane for the first time this year as he held off several challenges from Roy E. Lynch, Tracy Dockery, Stacey White and William Wrenn. Points leader Robby Roxbury took a big hit in the points when he lost a drive shaft and finish dead last in the feature.
Hayesville’s Jeremy Cross won for the eighth straight time in the Modified Pony feature and moved two points out of second place in the points, Jadrien Beaver was second. Brian "Big Mac" McDonald wrapped up the points championship with his third place finish. Even if he didn’t show up at next week’s season final, he can’t be passed. Tommie Lovato was fourth with Roger Beaver taking fifth. The Stock Pony feature was won by Morganton’s Kevin Sutton. Rounding out the top five were Justin Woodard, Justin Thomas, Justin Deaver and Greg Sudderth.
Next week ends the 2003 season at Tri-County Racetrack with a big fireworks show along with a full racing program. The popular demolition derby will be held in October.

Bigger is better for Johnny Chastain for 5th win of the year

When car owner Randall Twiggs put in what he called the big motor in Johnny Chastain’s racecar, Johnny knew he had the horses to put him back to the point of the highly competitive Super Late Model division. Chastain started the season with an all aluminum 700-horsepower Steve Allen Chevy motor, but it broke a couple races in the season. With it fixed and back in the car, Chastain set low time of 13.684, took the lead on the first lap, and the Murphy racer never looked back, going from flag to flag for the win.

Action was close through the rest of the pack as Morganton’s Russell Thomas and Blue Ridge ace Rodney Weeks ran side by side through most of the 30-lap event with Thomas edging Weeks at the finish line for second. Barry Rogers, Kip Cochran, David Killian, “Bean Flipper” Barnett, Kevin Bradshaw and Danny Byers rounded out the field.

Hayesville’s Danny Ledford and Peachtree’s Jamie Oliver battled each other through the night in the Limited Sportsman feature with Ledford recording his 9th win of the season. Following Ledford and Oliver across the stripe were Ellis Parker, Todd Manners and Marvin Allen.

Michael Barnett fought his way through the 15-car Modified Hobby field to take his second win of the season, just ahead of Copperhill, TN’s Ryan Stillwell in a very action packed race. Perry Graves placed third ahead of David Conley and Tim Cochran. Cochran moved two points ahead of Arlan Ledford in the battle for the points championship, when Ledford cut a tire and finished eighth.

Blairsville’s Tracy Dockery battled Street Hobby points leader Robby Roxbury lap after lap, crossing the finish line half a car-length ahead for the win. Rounding out the top five were Michael Anderson, Stacey White and Roy E. Lynch.

Six wins in a row was what Hayesville’s Jeremy Cross accomplished Saturday night in the Modified Pony main event. “Big Mac” McDonald held on to the points lead with a second place finish, followed by Roger Beaver, Jadrien Beaver and Tommy Lovato.

The largest field of the season showed up at Tri-County in the Stock Pony class, as 20 of the four cylinder racers started the 20-lap feature. After three restarts and half a dozen cars heading to the pits, the race settled down to a hard fought event between Justin Woodard from Sylva, NC, Kevin Sutton, Justin Deaver, Derrick Stillwell and Greg Carpenter, who all finished in that order.

Its that Ford again in victory lane at Tri-County

Since a couple years ago when Cleveland, GA’s Barry Rogers became the first Ford driver to win a feature at Tri-County Racetrack in about 15-years, he has been a frequent visitor to the 3/8’s mile high-banked clay oval’s victory lane. After three straight victories, then sitting out last week’s race with a broken lifter, Rogers returned to take his fourth win of the year.

Rogers set fast time of the night on the tacky track with a 13.626 clocking, just ahead of Murryville, GA’s Jeff Weber who turned 13.784. Johnny Chastain, Bobby Panter and Franklin, NC’s Joey McCoy, in his first visit to Tri-County this year, also dipped into the 13’s during qualifying.

At the drop of the green, Rogers took the lead, with Weber and Chastain battling for second. As Rogers took a 10-car lead, Weber and Chastain dueled door-to-door for 22-laps with Panter and McCoy just car-lengths behind them. Chastain moved under Weber on the bottom of turn three with eight laps to go and set sail after Rogers. Chastain was hoping for a caution as he was cutting the distance between him and the leader, but ran out of laps and settled for a strong second place finish. Weber, McCoy, Panter, Rodney Weeks, Bear Patterson, Alton Crisp, Bennie Davis, Jeff Helton and Danny Byers rounded out the field. Multi-time track champion Joe Barnett, in his first race in two years, had problems during hot laps and could not start the feature.

Tiger, GA’s Wesley English put a stop to Danny Ledford’s Limited Sportsman streak as he lead the 20-lap feature, just inches ahead of Ledford who came in second. Blue Ridge’s Todd Manners had one of his strongest runs of the year and took third place ahead of Marvin Allen and Joey Singleton.

Peachtree driver Michael “Spankey” Barnett came back from a second place finish last week that was disqualified because of running an unapproved tire, to rebound with a win in the Modified Hobby feature over Tim Cochran, Arlan Ledford, Brandon Dills and Chris Raper. Robby Roxbury took his second Street Hobby win in a row when fellow Blairsville driver Roy E. Lynch blew his motor in a spectacular fiery explosion on the 12th lap just in front of him. Michael Anderson, Danny Owens, William Wrenn and Raymond Wrenne filled out the top five.

Jeremy Cross made it four Modified Hobby wins in a row as he passed and then held off the newly married Jadrien Beaver, formerly Barnett. “Big Mac” McDonald took third followed by Tommy Lovato and Gary Jenkins. Marble, NC driver Jamie Newton took his Mustang to victory in the Stock Pony feature as he held off the challenge of points leader Justin Deaver to win by a car length. Derrick Stillwell was third followed by Ricky Walker and Kevin Sutton.

After repeated attempts to get the drivers to calm down their style of driving in the two-man Cruiser races, track officials announced they will discontinue the class the rest of the season. “It got too much like a demolition derby every week, so we will discontinue it,” said track promoter Phil Evans. Danny Ledford and Tom Wright were the winners Saturday night over Roger Beaver and James Queen.

Panter wins when Chastain blows with three laps to go

In a night of attrition at Tri-County Racetrack Saturday night in the Super Late Model feature, Blairsville’s Bobby was one of the last men standing. The 30-lap main event started with pole setter Johnny Chastain taking the lead on the 10-car field as Panter and Danny Byers battled for second. Byers pulled a classic slide job on Panter in the second turn and set sail after Chastain. When Byers had mechanical problems and pulled into the pits, Panter and Blue Ridge’s Rodney Weeks were staging a door-to-door battle for second.

Chastain was walking away with the race when on lap 27, smoke then fire erupted under the hood of the Randall Twiggs black number 00 Monte Carlo bringing out the caution. With fifth place finisher Lee Collenbock, sixth place Byers, seventh place Bear Patterson, eighth place Bennie Davis, ninth place Kevin Bradshaw and tenth place Barry Rogers already in the pits, it was a three lap shoot-out between Panter, Weeks and Alton Crisp. On the final lap, Panter pulled a car length ahead to take the win over Weeks and Crisp in that order. Chastain was credited with fourth and still holds the points lead over Rogers.

It was all Danny Ledford’s show in the Limited Sportsman race, as the Hayesville driver was fast qualifier and led the caution free 20-lap feature from flag to flag for his seventh win of the year. Jamie Oliver was second, followed by Wesley English, Marvin Allen and Todd Manners.

Copperhill, TN driver Ryan Stillwell took his first win of the season in the Modified Hobby main event. When Michael Barnett, who finished second was found to have a tire that was not allowed, he was disqualified and Tim Cochran, Preston Graves, Arlan Ledford and Jamie Parker all moved up in the top five. In the most exciting race of the night, Robby Roxbury and Jim Exum rubbed bumpers and fenders for 20-laps with Roxbury squeezing out the win over Exum, Roy Lynch, Johnny Burnett and William Wrenn in the Street Hobby feature.

It was three wins in a row for Hayesville’s Jeremy Cross in the Modified Pony race as Andrews B.G. Thompson, Brian McDonald, Roger Beaver and Tommie Lovato rounded out the top five. The Stock Pony feature saw Eddie Lockaby take another win followed by Justin Deaver, James Smith, Justin Thomas and Justin Guffey.

Tom Wright and Danny Ledford won the Cruiser feature followed by the team of Roger Beaver and James Queen.

Three times for Rogers as Chastain's luck goes sour

Barry Rogers was good and both lucky Saturday night at Tri-County Racetrack in the super late model feature. With a second fastest time of 14.058 to Shawn Chastain’s 13.963 clocking, Rogers at the drop of the green flag found himself trailing S. Chastain around the fast high-banked 3/8’s oval. Going into turn three, Chastain came to a quick stop as the car quit. Rogers then took the lead chased by Johnny Chastain. Lap after lap Chastain tried high then low in an effort to get by the Ford Taurus of Rogers. Going into turn three of the 28th lap, Chastain made an inside move on Rogers to take the lead as the white flag was waved. A six-car crash at the start-finish line brought out the caution, and after the track was cleared, the restart went back to the last completed lap which put Rogers back into the lead.
As the cars were getting set to take the restart, the right rear tire came off of Chastain’s Monte Carlo putting him out of the chase. Russell Thomas then took over second place, followed by David Killian who had a strong third place finish despite driving with a broken left leg. Bennie Davis, Bear Patterson, Kevin Bradshaw, Rodney Weeks, J. Chastain, Jeff Helton and Gabe Wilson rounded out the top-ten.
The limited sportsman saw a 17-car field start the race with Jonathan Davenport sitting on the inside pole, with Jamie Oliver on the outside. Oliver took the lead on the first lap and held it until eight laps later, Danny Ledford got past him in lapped traffic. Davenport, Oliver and Wesley English battled each other as they chased Ledford only inches behind for second place. Davenport had problems and went to the pits as the race settled down to a finish showing Ledford, Oliver, English, Trigg Parris and Sam Parris filling the top five spots.
Blue Ridge’s Tim Cochran made his first ever trip to Tri-County’s victory lane when he edged out Perry Graves, Clinton Raper, Chris Thompson and Arlan Ledford for the modified hobby race. In an action packed feature that saw one car climb the wall then return to ram the car that he felt put him there, Roy Lynch managed to return to victory lane. Johnny Burnett, Stacy White, Robby Roxbury and Jim Exum rounded out the top five.
Jeremy Cross won in the modified pony main event for the second week in a row. Cross seems to make it hard on himself as last week he had to come from the back of the pack , and then this week once again fell to the back on a near spin, only to fight back and move ahead of Brian "Big Mac" McDonald, Roger Beaver, Jadrien Barnett and Tommie Lovato in that order. Brasstown and Tri-County Racetrack neighbor Greg Sudderth made the short tow to win his first ever feature in the stock pony race. Kevin Sutton was leading coming to the checkers when his motor quit and Sudderth edged him by a couple inches. Jamie Newton, Mike Beck and Eddie Lockaby round out the top five spots.
In one of the better cruiser races of the year, it was once again Danny Ledford and Tom Wright winners, but not without a battle. Bobby Norris and Jack Kendrix took the lead but fell to the wayside with suspension problems. Eddie and Wendell Beaver then took the lead and held off a fierce duel with Ledford and Wright until the Beaver car broke. Shannon Jones and Bo McClure then took over second place followed by Steve Beaver and James Queen for third.

Chastain and Russell battle brings crowd to their feet at Tri-County

Johnny Chastain and Russell Thomas brought the crowd to their feet close to a dozen times in the 30-lap super late model feature at Tri-County Racetrack Saturday night. Russell set fast time at 13.795 with Chastain second fastest time at 13.925. Russell chose the outside lane and took the lead for a couple laps, and then Chastain passed him and led for a couple laps. Then it was Thomas who was running the top groove once again regaining the lead. Thomas and Chastain ran inches apart for over 20-laps, with Chastain racing on the bottom groove, moving up to the driver’s door of Thomas lap after lap. With one lap to go, the caution flag came out, making the race a green-white-checkered flag event. As the two set sail, Chastain once again worked his way to the inside of Thomas, and down the last 100 feet of the track took the lead and win by inches. As Chastain went around the track for a victory lap with his hand held out the window waving to the crowd, they gave both drivers a standing ovation. Barry Rogers finished third, followed by Rodney Weeks, Danny Byers, Bennie Davis, Kevin Bradshaw, Glen “Bean Flipper” Barnett and Chris Stewart.

The 12-car limited sportsman feature was just as exciting as the super late model race, as Danny Ledford and Jonathan Davenport raced door-to-door for the first half of the 20-lap event. After the caution fell for a spinning car, on the restart, Davenport managed to get under Ledford and took the lead until Ledford’s car slid into Davenport, causing Davenport to spin and when another car slid into his car, Davenport cut a tire and had to go to the pits. Ledford had to go to the rear of the pack, and Jamie Oliver took over the lead and went on to win his first feature of this season. Galen Robinson, Ledford and Kenny Barrett filled the top five spots.

Chip Parker finally had his motor stay together and took the modified hobby feature over Arlan Ledford, Jamie Parker, Nathan McNabb and Ryan Mashburn. Robby Roxbury won the street hobby feature. Michael Anderson worked his way through the 16-car field to finish second. Johnny Burnett took third, Roy Lynch, fourth, and Tracy Dockery was fifth.

Jeremy Cross visited victory lane again as he won the modified pony main event. Brian McDonald took second, followed by Chris Davenport, Tommie Lovato and Gary Jenkins. Justin Deaver was the stock pony winner as 15-cars were entered in the race. Ricky Walker ran second, with Derrick Stillwell, Eddie Lockaby and Greg Sudderth rounding out the top five. Tom Wright and Danny Ledford won the cruiser feature with Hank Jones and Danny Cordin taking second. The new team of Eddie Green and James Queen took third.

Tri County Speedway Ready for Friday Night

HUDSON, NC – Less than five days remain until the green flag flies to begin the 2003 season at Tri County Motor Speedway. While the speedway noticed significant improvement throughout the season, the entire staff at Tri County Motor Speedway has been working hard during the off season to get the track ready for another year.

TCMS has made several improvements to the facility to improve access for everyone visiting the speedway this season. The track has worked on trackside parking areas and delivered gravel to the areas for improved parking and drainage and repaired areas of the front parking lot for spectators.

The track has also planted 200 leland cypress trees around the facility to aid in sound buffering in the area and overall improved appearance of the facility. A fresh coat of paint has been applied to the facility and lighting has been fixed during the off season.

“USAR and Tri-County Motor Speedway are committed in providing the best motorsports entertainment for the dollar,” said General Manager Jimmy Wilson. “In addition to this we must make sure the speedway looks presentable to our fans and competitors as well as be 100% functional on race nights so the program is not impaired in any manner.”

The season begins this Friday night with Cars Plus Night featuring action in all five divisions. Pit gates open 4:00pm with grandstand gates opening at 5:15 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 7 p.m. with the green flag set to wave at 8 p.m.

"All of us at Tri-County Motor Speedway are very proud of our facility and 2003 looks like it will be a great year for us,” added Wilson. “We hope that everyone will come out and give us a chance to earn their support for TCMS during 2003."

Tri County Speedway Signs Late Model Division Sponsor

Hudson, NC – As the 2003 season for Tri County Motor Speedway draws near track general manager Jimmy Wilson is pleased to announce the signing of Tucson Cigarettes as sponsor of the Late Model Division for this season.

“Tri County Motor Speedway is pleased to have Tucson join us as a marketing partner,” said Wilson. “I look forward to working with Tucson as we continue to make County Motor Speedway one of the finest short track facilities in the southeast.”

The signing of Tucson gives the track its first sponsorship agreement of its Late Model Stock division since United Speed Alliance Racing began sanctioning and day-to-day operations of the 4/10-mile facility in mid-2001.

“Last year was a success for Tri County Motor Speedway and USAR,” said USAR President Gene Cox. “We are proud to have Tri County Motor Speedway and appreciate the support everyone in Caldwell County has given us as we work together to make the speedway a success.”

The speedway will feature a 12-date schedule with racing on every other Friday night highlighted by Tucson Night on Friday, June 13th with twin 50-lap features for the Tucson Late Model Division.

Tri County Speedway Announces 2003 Event Schedule

Hudson, NC – Although Tri County Motor Speedway released its 2003 schedule last fall the speedway has updated the schedule to announce several special events. While the amount of race dates remain the same and on the same date, the speedway has scheduled special events for each of its weekly divisions this season.

Each of the speedway’s five divisions will have a minimum of one extended lap event during the 2002 season. These special events will give the fans, competitors and sponsors an extra opportunity to enjoy racing at the speedway.

“We believe that every division should have an opportunity to showcase themselves as the “main event” during a race night during the season,” said Tri County Motor Speedway General Manager Jimmy Wilson. “We believe every class running at Tri County Motor Speedway is important to the success of the track and we want to ensure that by giving each division a special race. It is important for our racers to showcase themselves in the spotlight and we feel this is a way we can do that for everyone involved this year.”

Each division, with exception of the Tucson Late Model Division, will have a 50-lap race scheduled during the year with additional purse money provided for the event. The Tucson Late Model Division will have a twin 50 lap feature and he Coca-Cola 100 race on August 8th as part of Coca-Cola Family Night.
