Chubzilla Captures 35th Annual STARS HILLBILLY 100

(Middlebourne, WV) Chub "Chubzilla" Frank of Sugar Grove, PA took the
lead on lap 40 and never looked back on his way to his first STARS Hillbilly
100 victory. The seventh starting Frank used the first 34 laps as a test
session, using multiple racing lines trying to find the quickest way around
the lightning quick quarter mile. Frank rode in positions seven through
five up to lap 35 when he pulled into fourth and to the back of the lead
pack. Frank then went to work on leader Corey Conley, second running Steve
Francis, and third running Steve Shaver. The battle for the lead had all
four cars at times battling nose to tail, side by side, three and even on
one occasion four wide for the next four laps. Corey Conley, Hillbilly 50
winner and the leader of the Hillbilly 100 from the drop of the green flag
managed to fight off the pack until lap 39. Lap 40 had the lead pack enter
turn one nearly four wide with Frank seeing the opening down low and darting
to the inside, grabbed up some extra bite and shooting into the lead down
the back stretch leaving Francis in second, Shaver in third and Conley back
to fourth. Frank settled into an extremely comfortable rhythm, stretching
his lead at times to more than a straight away over the last 59 laps. Frank
cruised to a 12-car length win on his way to the $25,000 championship check.
The only challenges for the lead Frank had to fight off came from second
finishing Steve Francis on the restarts on laps 43, 55, 72, 79, and 85.
Coming home with a strong third place finish was Mike Balzano. Booper Bare
made a late race charge to the front earning a hard fought fourth place
finish while Steve Shaver rounded out the top five.
Frank in victory lane stated, "This is great!" When asked about the
battle for the lead during laps 36 through 40 Frank commented " I didn't
think we could get four wide here this place is really too fast to race
three wide. Somehow I saw the opening at the bottom and the car stuck." He
also said "the track was super, it never really blacked over and we could
race everywhere on the track." Frank graciously accepted his customized
Hillbilly 100 trophy and $25,000 winners check. He thanked the fans, his
sponsors, and when asked if he was going to contend for the Dirt Track World
Championship at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, KY on October 18th and
19th, Chub said " I just got my entry form in the mail last week, I'll be
filling it out and sending it in tomorrow."

the first HILLBILLY 100 Title to be claimed at Tyler County Speedway in
1998. Davey Johnson of Greensburg, PA notched the HILLBILLY 100 victory in
1999 holding off all charges from the best in the business that included
Scott Bloomquist, Steve Francis, Billy Moyer, Steve Shaver, Mike Balzano and
a host of others. Davey Johnson posted the win in 2000, dominating the

Billy Moyer rode to victory over the star studded field and used the win to
catapult his way to winning the prestigious 2002 late model driver of the
year award. Who will claim the HILLBILLY 100 $25,000 winners share in 2003?

Hill, Dickson, Fairbanks, Jett & Santee take Tyler County wins

In what may have been the competitive night of action in the 2003 Tyler
County Speedway season saw Bobby Hill (LM's), Mark Dickson (AMRA mods),
Barry Fairbanks (SS), Shawn Jett (PS) & Kim Santee (WRS) take home top
honors.

Paul Wilmoth jumped into the early lead in the Late Model main, with M T
Hall, Hill, Scott Irvin and Steve Weigle all in close pursuit. 2 and 3 wide
racing had the fans on their feet, as the top 3 cars all worked different
lines of the 1/4 mile. Hill worked his way past Hall on lap 7, and
immediately pressured the rim-riding Wilmoth for the point. As the leaders
approached lap traffic on lap 13, they were side by side, with Hill using
his low line to box Wilmoth in on the top.
A pair of late race cautions bunched the field, but the smooth Hill never
faltered as his 'Larry's Western Shop', 'Roberto's Restaurant', 'Lori's
Detailing', 'Mitchell's Pizza' Rocket Chassis crossed under the checkered
flag with a 2 car length advantage over M T Hall, who's late race pass
dropped Wilmoth to third. Scott Irvin was 4th, with Bobby Mossor making his
best showing of the season by rounding out the top 5.
In the post race interview Hill stated that "patience is the key to being
fast around the bottom of the track here. You gotta keep the car straight".
Hill and Wilmoth won the LM prelims, with M T Hall clocking in quickest at
12.99 seconds in qualifying.

The AMRA modified main had more suspense than a Stephen King novel, as a
field full of contenders and 2003 feature winners chased current TCS point
leader Donnie Nething at the drop of the green flag.
As Nething and Mark Dickson raced side by side on lap 3, Nething's car
mysteriously lost power, and Dickson rode over Nething's LR tire, resulting
in a wheelie that drag racer Don "Big Daddy" Garlitt's would have admired.
The result of the contact was the right rear spring came out of the Dickson
car.
>From this point on, positions in the top 10 changed every lap, and a hard
charging Tom Sigler and Jason Brookover applied pressure to the leader as
those cars ran 3 wide at times.
A late race caution set the field up for a one lap shootout, and a
determined Dickson held off Brookover by a half car length to make the
'Boley Enterprises', 'Ken Stahler Masonry', 'Mike's Auto Body & Paint',
'Integra Fabrication Wizard Chassis' the 6th different feature winner in the
ultra competitive AMRA modified division. Following Dickson & Brookover were
Rod Sayre, Dale Keplinger and Brent Trimble.
In the on-track interview, Dickson dedicated the race win to his father who
had passed away earlier this summer, and credited brother & crew chief Todd
for his efforts.
Nething and Dickson were the heat winners.

Barry Fairbanks has been one of the hottest Street Stock drivers in the
mid-Ohio Valley, and once again proved to be golden when Tyler County offers
a big payday to the Street Stock class.
Fairbanks worked his way around early race leader Bucky Rine on lap 2, and
was never seriously challenged from that point on.
Rine held off Brian Propst, who by virtue of his 3rd place finish won the 3
race point title. Robby "Taz' Thomas and Rickey Conley rounded out the top
5.
Street Stock heats went to Rine and Fairbanks, who was declared the winner
of heat 2 after apparent winner Brad Thomas was disqualified for rules
infractions.

Shawn Jett led wire to wire in the Pure Stock main, with Mike Griffin,
Roland Bell, Richard Britton and Bobby Kimball completing the top 5 in a
finish that resembled a Talledega draft.
Griffin, Jett and Bell won the PS heats.

Kim Santee led all 12 laps of the Womens Racing Series feature, as she and
husband Howard celebrated their anniversary by padding her points lead in
the division. "The Flying Princess" was chased to the checkered flag by
Tammy Clegg, Patricia Wnek, Jennifer Dotson and Tammy Mossor.

Racing continues every Saturday night at the 1/4 mile fairgrounds oval, with
general admission now only $8.00.

Harper Claims Topless 50 Title
Christina Ferrell - Tyler County Speedway PR
Pictures by Flash Productions

Tyler County Speedway held their ninth annual running of the Topless 50 for
late models. Paul Wilmoth Jr. set fast time of the evening as well as set
the new track record turning a time of 12:46 around the quarter-mile
speedway. Steve Weigle and Gary Midcap Jr. led the field of late models to
the start of their feature event. Weigle took the early lead, but the
caution flag would wave before a lap was down causing a complete restart.
Weigle and Midcap would battle for the lead on the restart but again the
caution would wave before a lap was made around the quarter-mile speedway.
Weigle would take the lead on the restart with Paul Wilmoth Jr wasting no
time moving into the runner-up position. However, Wilmoth would not hold
the position for long as MT Hall quickly ducked under Wilmoth for second
place. As Weigle continued to lead things were beginning to look grim for
the only two-time winners of the Topless 50. A spin on the backstretch
forced Butch McGill to the tail of the field and a flat tire forced Paul
Wilmoth Jr to retire to the pits. Tim Dohm, who had started 13th, was
beginning to work his way through the field after being caught up in two
cautions at the beginning of the event. Mike Benedum was also starting to
make his way to the front of the pack after starting in 12th. Weigle would
continue to lead until lap 17, when MT Hall took over the lead on the
backstretch. However, Hall's lead would only last for 10 laps when Chuck
Harper took over the lead on lap 27. Harper, who had won the Topless 50 in
1998, had started the feature event from the ninth position. Harper would
continue to lead the event with Dohm working his way into second place by
lap 34. The pair would stay there for the remainder of the race with Harper
becoming the third two-time winner of the Topless 50. Following Harper to
the checkers was Dohm for second and Benedum for third. MT Hall and Robbie
Scott would round out the top with fourth and fifth place finishes.
Despite several cautions, the AMRA Modified event was as equally exciting
as the Late Model feature. Louie Krushansky and Brent Trimble would lead
the field around for the start of the feature event, but a caution at the
start of the race would force both cars to the pits without completing one
lap. After three cautions, the race was underway and the 2002 AMRA Rookie
of the Year Butch Malone was in the lead. Despite several cautions Malone
was able to lead every lap of the feature event to take home his first ever
AMRA Modified feature win. Following Malone to the finish line was Donnie
Nething in second and Tommy Powell in third. Brian Probst would finish in
fourth and Tom Sigler would round out the top of the field finishing in
fifth.
Tammy Clegg and Kim Santee made up the front row in the Women's Racing
Series feature race. Santee would take over the lead at the start of the
race to lead the first eight laps of the event. Tammy Clegg would take over
the lead on lap nine and lead the final four laps of the feature for her
first feature win of the season. Teresa Dotson finished in the runner up
spot with Santee finishing in third.
Joe Memel and Bucky Rine would lead the field of Street Stocks for the
start of their feature event. Memel would take over the lead on lap one and
lead all 15 circuits around the speedway for his first feature win of the
season at Tyler County Speedway. Robby Thomas followed Memel to the finish
line for second place with Dave Gorrell in third. Joel Prosser would finish
the event in fourth place with Gary Knollinger Jr finishing in fifth place.
The Pure Stock division was the final field of cars to take to the speedway
for their feature event. Michael Griffin and Greg Hoit lead the field to
the drop of the green flag. Kevin Dotson quickly moved into the runner up
spot to challenge Griffin for the lead. However, Griffin would be the first
to the checkered flag to win his first feature event of the season at Tyler
County Speedway. Dotson would follow for second with Roland Bell in third.
Shawn Jett and Alan DeMoss would round out the top of the field with fourth
and fifth place finishes.
Next week, April 19th, Tyler County Speedway will run the first leg of the
Street Stock Championship Series paying $700 to win. Gates will open at 5pm
and hot laps will begin at 6:15pm. For more information about the speedway

McGill Wins Season Opener
Christina Ferrell - Tyler County Speedway PR

Drivers and fans braved the cold temperatures for the season opener at Tyler County Speedway and were not disappointed with the racing excitement.

Fast qualifier, Steve Weigle and Butch McGill led the field of late models to the start of their feature event. West Union’s Butch McGill wasted no time taking over the lead position. Just three cautions would slow down the feature event. The caution would fall on lap 16 for leader McGill, however with Tyler County Speedway opting to use judgment calls for the 2003 season, McGill was able to retain his lead. McGill went on to dominate the field and claim his first feature win of the season. Following McGill to the checkered was Mike Benedum in second and Chuck Harper finishing in third. Mike Eaton and Paul Wilmoth Jr finished out the top of the field with fourth and fifth place finishes.

In the second annual WV Modified Championship, Kenny Johnson and Brent Trimble would lead the field to the start of their feature event. The pair raced each other for the lead throughout much of the event with Kenny Johnson crossing the finish line for his first feature win of the season at Tyler County Speedway. Following Johnson to the finish was Trimble for second and Corey Conley for third. Butch Malone would cross the finish line in fourth place with Rick Hockenberry rounding out the top of the field with a fifth place finish.

The Women’s Racing Series would be the next class to take to speedway with Kim Santee and Tammy Clegg bringing the field around to the drop of the green flag. Santee would take the early lead and never relinquish the top spot for her first feature win of the season. Teresa Dotson would finish in second place with Tammy Clegg following in third.

The Street Stock Division would continue with the racing excitement as Kyle Thomas and Dave Gorrell brought the field around for the start of their feature event. Dave Gorrell took the lead on lap one and lead most of the feature event. Barry Fairbanks started in the fourth position but quickly moved into second place by lap three. Fairbanks would remain there waiting for the right moment to seize the lead. With just two laps to go, Fairbanks was able to move into the lead and win his first feature event at Tyler County Speedway for the 2003 season. Gary Knollinger also made a move with just two laps to go and finish up in second place. Joel Prosser followed for third with Bobby Keith and Robbie Thomas rounding out the top positions with fourth and fifth place finishes.

The final feature event of the evening found Michael Griffin and Roland Bell sitting on the front row for the start of the Pure Stock feature event. Griffin jumped into the early lead with Bell taking over the lead at the halfway mark. Bell went on to lead the remainder of the race and win his first feature event of the season. Following Bell was Griffin for second and Eric Francis in third. Shawn Jett finished in fourth with Kevin Dotson rounding out the top positions in fifth place.

Next week, April 12, Tyler County Speedway will host their ninth annual Topless 50 for late models paying $3,000 to win. This is a unique event in which all roofs and window supports are removed from the racecar to provide the fans with a “birds-eye” view of the drivers as they work their way around the quarter-mile speedway. Gates will open at 5pm and hot laps will begin at 6:15pm.

Batesville Bullet Billy Moyer Wins 34th Annual Hillbilly 100

A record number of over 250 cars gathered at Tyler County Speedway this weekend to battle it out and make the field in one of the most prestigious dirt racing events in the country. This year’s 34th annual Hillbilly 100 was in memory of Earl Hill. Hill raced in the mid-Ohio valley area for many years. “Earl really owned the late model division here [Tyler County Speedway], as no one ever has or probably ever will,” according to speedway announcer Steve Davis. In the spirit of racing and out of respect for Earl and the entire Hill family, it was an easy choice for the promoters to dedicate this race to one of the most respected racing legends in the area.

The excitement kicked off Sunday evening with the running of the Hillbilly 50 for Steel-Block Late Models. Middlebourne native Steve Weigle set fast time of the evening during qualifying. Weigle and MT Hall would lead the field of 24 to the start of the feature event. Ricky Williams and Doug Horton would follow in row two. Weigle quickly moved into the lead with Hall and Horton not far behind. Horton moved his way into second by lap four to challenge Weigle for the lead. The pair would battle it out for just two laps when Weigle pulled into the pit area with mechanical problems. Horton took over the lead and would check out from the rest of the field leaving the battle for second place. Hall would continue to follow in second place for several laps with Ricky Williams making a number of challenges for the runner-up spot. Williams was able to get around Hall on lap 11 and take over second place. Despite several cautions, Horton was still able to dominate the field pulling away from the rest after each caution. With the checkered flag waving high in the air it was the “Morgantown Missile” Doug Horton claiming the bragging rights as champion of the Hillbilly 50. Following Horton across the finish line was Ricky Williams for second place and MT Hall in third. Mike Benedum and Corey Conley would round out the top finishers with fourth and fifth finishes.

The pits were once again jammed with cars on Monday morning for the running of the 34th annual Hillbilly 100 in memory of the late Earl Hill. A total of 78 late models took to the speedway for qualifying. Just four late models would scratch from the qualifying session. When qualifying was complete, it was the #1 Rocket Chassis of Steve Francis, who would turn the fasted time around the quarter-mile speedway and take the pole for the start of the Hillbilly 100. The rest of the field would be left to battle it out in one of five heat races. The top three from each heat moved into the feature with the rest going to one of three consolation races. The top two from each consi moved into the feature. Three additional drivers would tag the tail of the field with provisionals. With the field set, Steve Francis and Steve Shaver led the group to the start of the 34th annual Hillbilly 100. Francis jumped into the early lead but Shaver would move beside Francis and take over the lead by lap three. The caution flag would wave for the first time on lap 13 for Corey Conley and Steve Casebolt. On the restart, it was Shaver in the lead with Billy Drake in second and Billy Moyer in third. Moyer would only stay in third for the next few laps as he moved into the runner-up spot by lap 20 to challenge Shaver for the lead. Shaver held strong for the next sixteen laps fighting off the several charges from Moyer. Moyer was able to take over the lead on lap 36 with Shaver falling into second. The caution flag would wave again on lap 39 as Scott Peltz came to a stop on the front stretch. On the restart, it would the “Batesville Bullet” Billy Moyer in the lead with two Parkersburg drivers, Steve Shaver and Mike Balzano following. Billy Drake and Robbie Blair would round out the top of the field in fourth and fifth place. With Moyer dominating the lead position, Shaver and Balzano would battle it out side by side throughout much of the 100-lap event. As Moyer was lapping the field and Shaver and Balzano were putting on a show for second, Robbie Blair was quietly making his way through the field. Blair, making the race by winning the first consolation race, had started in the 17th position. With a few more cautions and the laps quickly counting down, Blair had managed to make his way around Shaver and Balzano for second place to face Moyer for the lead. Near the end of the event, Blair made his way by Moyer for the lead, however Moyer showed fans why his recently released biography is called “The Essence of Mr. Smooth” as he pulled beside Blair and smoothly took over the lead just as quickly as he had lost it. Moyer went on to lead the remaining laps and win his first ever Hillbilly 100 title. Following Moyer to the finish line was Blair for second and Mike Balzano for third. Shaver would finish in fourth with Billy Drake rounding out the top of the field with a fifth place finish.

The ladies of Tyler County Speedway were the next division to take to the speedway for the running of the inaugural Daisy Mae 15. Tammy Clegg and Jennifer Mason would lead the field to the start of the Women’s Racing Series feature event. Jennifer Mason moved into the lead from the outside pole and led all 15 circuits around the speedway to win her first feature ever at Tyler County Speedway. Following Mason to the checkered was Tammy Clegg in second and Yvonne Ollum in third.

Corey Conley and Mike Wilson would lead a field of 22 AMRA Modifieds to the start of the White Lightin’ 20. Conley took over the lead with Dave Groves in hot pursuit. The pair would battle it out for the lead through out the 20-lap event. With the checkered flag waving the pair would race side by side to the finish line with Conley just edging out Groves for the win. Following the pair to the checkered flag was Mike Wilson in third with Donnie Dotson and Brent Trimble rounding out the top of the field in fourth and fifth place.

The Street Stocks were the next field to roll onto the speedway for the running of the Sour Mash 20. Pat Gillian and Dave Gorrell were on the front row with Bucky Rine and Ryan Twarog in row two to lead the field of 22 cars to the drop of the green flag. Gillian jumped out to the early lead and never relinquished the top spot to win his first feature event of the season at Tyler County Speedway. John Powell Jr started in the fifth position but was in the runner-up spot by lap two. Powell held on to follow Gillian to the finish line. Mick Baker, starting in seventh, quickly worked his way through the field to finish in third with Steve Bigley finishing in fourth. Robert Garnes filled the top of the field with a fifth place finish.

The Lil’ Hilly 20 was the final event of the evening, with Shawn Jett and Bobby Nolan Sr. leading the field to the start. Bobby Nolan Sr quickly worked his way into the lead position and held on to lead the remainder of the event and take home his second ever Lil’ Hilly 20 title. Michael J. Griffin followed to finish in the runner-up position with Bobby Kimball finishing in third. Danny Thomas and Ted Bier finished out the top position in fourth and fifth places.
