Patterson Heads Up ALMS Tour

ROSSBURG, OH (July 28) -- Perhaps the time has come to rename the Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS) to the Kris Patterson Series, or so it seems.

Since its inception in 1995, the St. Johns, Michigan ace has captured the ALMS title four times, and is well on his way to gaining yet another crown based on his 2003 performance. With last weekend’s victory at the Gas City I-69 Speedway in Indiana, Patterson has captured five feature wins along the tour this year, and will carry a hefty 66 point lead into this Friday‘s (Aug. 1) chase at Michigan‘s Hartford Speedway Park.

While the rest of the field has set their mark on Patterson, his biggest opponent Friday night will be fellow Wolverine Jeep VanWormer, who has a firm grasp on Hartford’s monstrous oval. After proving triumphant in the 2001 ALMS debut at Hartford, VanWormer has been victorious in four of the six visits, including the most recent appearance in May.

As Patterson’s consistency aims him towards another title, the battle for second place honors is shaping up into a heated one. Jerry Bowersock, the 1999 champion, and Brian Ruhlman have been swapping second and third place back and forth over recent weeks, and going into Friday’s contest, only one point separates the duo. Ruhlman holds the edge.

Current Sunoco ALMS point standings:

1. Kris Patterson 552
2. Brian Ruhlman 487
3. Jerry Bowersock 486
4. Hillard Miller 450
5. Wayne Maffett, Jr. 442
6. Duane Chamberlain 436
7. Aaron Scott 345
8. Jeep VanWormer 332
9. Dean Anderson 296
10.Scott Bowersock 252

UMP Challenge of Champions Series Ready to Resume!
By Eldon Butcher

Evansville, IN (July 14, 2003) The UMP Challenge of Champions Series for Late Models will fire up to contend the second half of the season with a visit on Monday night, July 21 to Highland Speedway in Highland, IL.

The series has been inactive during the four week UMP Summer Nationals to allow drivers an opportunity to participate fully in those events.

The Highland race is a Gold Purse attraction promising the highest payoff thus far this season. It is the first of four $5,000 to win events scheduled over the next three weeks. Overall the action is going to be intense with seven races in just fourteen days.

Tri-State Speedway will host the Challenge of Champions on July 27th paying $2,000 to win. It will be the first visit for the touring late model group to the Haubstadt oval.

That appearance will lead drivers into a week of action with stops at Terre Haute(Tuesday), I-55 Raceway(Wednesday), Farmer City Raceway(Friday), Fairbury American Legion Speedway(Saturday) and a return visit to Vermilion County Speedway at Danville, IL on Sunday, August 3rd.

So far in 2003, seven of the eight scheduled races have been held. Randy Korte now leads Terry English in the Challenge of Champions points. One hundred and twenty different late model drivers from seven states have participated in this new series. Feature victories have allowed Terry English, Randy Korte, Shannon Babb, Brian Shirley and Dennis Erb, Jr. to earn starting spots for the year-end Extravaganza at I-55 Raceway on September 27th. Fifteen guaranteed starting spots for this $15,000 to win feature remain to be filled as the schedule unfolds.

NEXT CoC EVENT: Wednesday, June 11 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO!!

Shannon Babb takes second leg of Tri-State Challenge, earns $20,000 payday!

Pevely, MO (May 31, 2003) Forty U.M.P. Late Models signed in the gates for the second stop of the first annual Tri-State Challenge. The night kicked off with qualifying, where Roger Long posted the fastest time around the 1/3 mile high banked oval. Long was the only driver to get in the twelve second range, as he posted a lap time of 12.968 seconds. Billy Moyer had the second fastest time. Justin Allgaier, Tim Ratajczyk, Ed Dixon and Billy Drake completed the top six fastest qualifiers.

Using the standard U.M.P. Summer Nationals format for this event, the top six qualifiers went directly to the dash along with the 2002 U.M.P. National Champion, Terry English, the 2002 I-55 Raceway track champion which was Tim Ratajczyk, but he had already made the dash through qualifying, therefore that spot went to the next driver in track points that was present which was Mark Oller and a random drawn racer from all the cars that have competed each week at I-55 Raceway which went to Danny Haynes.

With the top six qualifiers redrawing for the starting spots in the dash, Justin Allgaier pulled the front row pole starting position and Roger Long got the outside of the front row. Billy Drake started on the second row inside with Tim Ratajczyk on the outside. The third row was Ed Dixon and Billy Moyer, however Dixon was late to staging for the dash and had to start at the back of the dash. Terry English, Mark Oller and Danny Haynes made up the final starting positions.

Billy Drake worked his way to the front on the second lap of the dash and went on to take the win. Terry English moved up from the seventh starting position to finsh second. Roger Long was third, Tim Ratajczyk fourth, Billy Moyer fifth and Ed Dixon was sixth. Those six all advanced straight into the feature the way the finished. Mark Oller was seventh and earned the front row pole starting position of the first heat race, Justin Allgaier was eighth and earned the front row starting position of the second heat race and Danny Haynes ninth to earn the front row starting position of the third heat race.

Mark Oller failed to make the start of the first heat. Shannon Babb battled early on with Clay Baumann and Billy Faust during the first heat, but soon Babb got out front all alone and pulled away to take the win. Billy Faust took second and Clay Baumann took the final transfer spot with the third place finish.

Don O'Neal drove to victory in heat two over Justin Allgaier and Dennis Erb.

Brian Wolfmeier took heat three over Kevin Weaver and Bill Frye.

The fourth and final heat went to Bob Pierce over Wendell Wallace and Randy Korte.

The first semi feature saw some great three wide racing for the lead for the first five laps as Duke Whiseant, Garrett Durrett and Brian Collins battled side by side lap after lap. On lap five the caution flew for Dean Hoffman who got into the wall in turn two which put the field single file. Several cars got together on the restart which eliminated Brian Collins. A hard crash with just two laps remaining took out Paul Belken and Bryan Millican. Duke Whiseant went on to take the win over Garrett Durrett and Steve Shive claimed the final transfer spot with a last lap pass over Dewayne Kiefer.

The second semi feature appeared to be a runaway as Kevin Gundaker checked out on the field. However, with just two laps remaining in the event, something broke on Gundaker's car causing him to slow. Danny Haynes went on to take the checkered flag. Bret Sievert took second and Jeff Taylor got the final transfer spot.

Billy Drake started front row pole in the feature event and jumped out to a nice lead in the opening laps. Roger Long moved up to second place behind Drake. Shannon Babb made his move to the front as well, as he moved up three spots to fourth on the opening lap. On lap thirteen, Babb had moved up to second place when Billy Drake began to slow down on the back stretch. Drake had a left rear tire go flat and this brought out the first caution. On the restart, Babb assumed the lead and he lead until lap eighteen, thats when Roger Long found the fast line around the top and moved into the lead. Long opened up a nice size lead until he started working lapped traffic. Babb moved under Long several times in the lapped traffic, but each time Long would pull back ahead. The next caution flew on lap thirty when Bill Frye was turned around in turn three. The race went another three laps before another caution flew for debris on the track, setting up a seven lap dash to the end. Roger Long again moved to the high side on the restart, allowing Babb to drive around the bottom. Moyer moved into the battle using the center of the track, creating a great three way battle for the lead. Babb moved just ahead of Long with two laps remaining, but Long wouldn't give up as he pulled along side Babb in each turn. Babb took the win by two car lengths over Long. Moyer came home third, Bob Pierce fourth and Don O'Neal fifth.

Shannon Babb’s victory earned him the Tri-State Challenge bonus money. Any driver that could win two of the three events of the series collected a $10,000 bonus. Babb also won Friday’s Tri-State Challenge feature at Farmer City Raceway. Babb collected $30,000 for his efforts the past two nights.

Scott Weber dominated the U.M.P. Modified division as he swept the night's events. Point leader Ray Walsh was second in the feature, Jim Shereck third, Brent Mullins fourth and Brian Wolfmieir fifth.

Ray Wagner drove to his first Sportsman victory of the year. Ed Lowry was second, Todd McGraw third, Bob Prince fourth and Scott Stuppy fifth.

UMP Modified Jesse Cramer--New web site and plans for 2003

Bloomington, IN--The Cramer Motorsports UMP open wheel modified team has launched a new website for driver Jesse Cramer at www.jessecramer.com for the 2003 racing season. The website will be updated weekly with news and results. "We decided to develop a new web site so that the fans could find our information on the web a lot easier with the jessecramer name" commented Krystyna Cramer, owner of Cramer Motorsports. Cramer Motorsports would like to welcome new sponsors JB Masonry, Sturgis Garage and Comp Cams for the upcoming season. Returning sponsors for the 2003 season are Monroe County Pizza Department (6 years) and Bloomington Powder Coating (3 years). The team is currently looking for additional sponsors for the season. For the upcoming season Jesse will be driving a 2003 Lightning chassis with a Moon Engine power plant. "Last year we had an older Lightning chassis and I really liked it, but it was going to take a lot of work to get it ready for this season, so we decided to buy a new Lightning chassis. Mr. Adams builds a super nice car that is just down right SWEET!" said Jesse about the new chassis. The pit crew will include, crew chief, John Bryd Jr. who works countless hours on the car and motors. Kebly Waldrip, will help take care of the chassis set-ups and Ryan Tharp will also be helping out with the team this year. Jesse will be racing at the Bloomington Speedway in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday nights and will travel to various tracks in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois on Saturday and Sunday nights. He will also compete in the Wolf-Pack Challenge in Indiana. " I am really excited about this upcoming season. I felt that we had a good season last year, but there's a lot of room for improvement. After attending the Larry Shaw Chassis Seminar in January, and learning a lot more about these cars, I feel like we are ready to get after it and do some hard racing" commented Jesse about the upcoming 2003 racing season.

U.M.P. wishes to announce the scheduling and format of a new, exciting and
unique Late Model racing series for 2003.

It is a series of twenty (20) races at leading U.M.P. Midwestern tracks. The
winner of each of these twenty (20) races has a guaranteed starting spot in
"The Challenge of Champions Race", toward the end of the year, date and site
TBA. The "Challenge of Champions Race" will pay $15,000 to win, $500 to
start, with a total purse of over $40,000.

Seventeen of the "Challenge of Champions" Series races will pay $2,000 to
win, $200 to start. Three of the "Challenge of Champions" races will pay
$5,000 to win, $300 to start.

Each race will have the fastest three (3) qualifiers starting on the inside
row of the dash, and the three(3) highest in "Challenge of Champions" Series
points starting on the outside row of the dash. That way, you have the best
of both worlds. You reward the loyal and you encourage the first timers to
participate and have a chance to start up front and earn a spot in the
Championship Race.

This concept is unusual, it is unique, it is exciting. Challenge of
Champions for 2003!

Twenty(20) Champions will be locked into the big Challenge of Champions
Championship race, representing the track where they won a series race. In
case of dual winners, the highest non-winner in series points will fill out
the twenty (20) car field. Four(4) additional cars will race their way into
the Championship Feature in one(1) or two(2) qualifying races that day for a
total field of twenty-four(24).

A new and unique idea for 2003. Not just racing for a purse, but also
battling for a guaranteed spot in a prestigious big money U.M.P. race.
