DRAKE-YELEY-HINES WAR CONTINUES AT TERRE HAUTE!
Jay Drake, J.J. Yeley and Tracy Hines are separated by only two points
for
the 2003 Earl's Plumbing USAC Sprint Car Qualifying Championship entering
this Saturday night's "Harvest Sprint Classic" at the Terre
Haute (Ind.)
Action Track. Drake and Yeley are tied, with Hines two points in arrears.
Only two races remain on the 2003 USAC National Sprint Car calendar.
Hines raked in 15 Earl's points in National Midget competition last week,
posting the fastest qualifying time at Indianapolis Raceway Park Saturday
and second fastest at Terre Haute, Ind. Thursday. Jerry Coons, Jr. was
Thursday's fastest Terre Haute qualifier. Hines' lead in the Earl's Plumbing
National Midget Fast Qualifier standings stands at 16 over Yeley.
Earl's points this week will also be distributed at USAC Western Sprint
and
Midget Car races Saturday at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway.
This year, each USAC National and Western Series qualifying champion
will
receive a $5,000 bonus from Earl's in recognition of their accomplishment.
Points are earned at each USAC event based on an international system
awarding the top-six qualifiers with points in the following scale: 1st-9.
2nd-6, 3rd-4, 4th-3, 5th-2, 6th-1.
The current Earl's Plumbing Fast Qualifier standings for each series
are as
follows:

Hines-28; 4-Dave Darland-21; 5-Jay Drake-15.

MARTZ TAKES LAKEVILLE 30-LAPPER
Tate Martz of Rushville, Ind. caught Trenton Darland on the 24th lap
of
Saturday night's 30-lap Indiana Ford Focus Midget Car feature at Lakeville
(Ohio) Speedway and led the rest of the way for the victory.
Martz was trailed at the checkered flag by Jordan Noblitt, Darland, Ryan
Litt and Robbie Parish. Friday night's prelims were postponed to Saturday
due to rain. Darland led the first 23 laps of Saturday's race before
yielding to Martz, who posted his third win of the season in his Immke
Auto
Group/Keith Kunz Motorsports machine.
Robbie Ray of Davenport, Iowa, extended his series point lead to 157
points
over runner-up Darland with only the October 11-12 event at the Anderson
(Ind.) Speedway currently remaining on the 2003 calendar. Ray was 11th
in

HUNSAKER LEADS FOCUSES TO IRWINDALE SATURDAY
Todd Hunsaker of Chino Hills, Calif. enters this Saturday night's USAC
"tripleheader" at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway with a 112-point
lead in
the South standings and with only 72 points available he is assured of
maintaining the lead after the race.
The defending USAC California Ford Focus Midget Car Champion has posted
the
fastest qualifying time in both previous 2003 Irwindale outings and he
finished second in April and fourth in June.
Ryan Kaplan and Josh Lakatos are split by only nine points in their battle
for second in points. Lakatos won the June race and Kaplan had a third
at
the 1/3-mile oval in April.
A 20-lap feature on the 1/3-mile pavement accompanies USAC Western Sprint
Car and Western Midget Car racing on the 1/2-mile in the "tripleheader"
event.

WESTERN MIDGET POINT BATTLE HEATS UP
AS SERIES VISITS IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
Californians Steve Paden of Downey, Josh Wise of Riverside and Jerome
Rodela of El Monte are gearing up for this weekend's USAC "tripleheader"
at
the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway. Each has his sights set on the 2003 USAC
Western Midget championship, with only 59 points separating the trio and
72
available at Irwindale.
None of the three were among the top-six in the two 25-lap races at
Irwindale in April, but Wise has a pair of Western wins at Bakersfield
to
his credit this year, in addition to his spectacular win in the "Belleville
Midget Nationals" at Belleville, Kans. Ironically, Bakersfield was
the site
of Paden and Rodela's best finishes yet this season as well, seconds for
both.
A 30-lap feature awaits the Western Midget Cars Saturday on Irwindale's
1/2-mile paved oval, while the Western Sprint Cars will compete on the
1/2
and the USAC California Ford Focus Midget Cars will race on the 1/3-mile.
Tracy Hines and Michael Lewis were the feature winners when the USAC
Midgets competed at Irwindale in April.
None of the top three in Western Midget points have ever won the title.
Paden was seventh in 2001, Wise was second in 2001 and Rodela was third
last
year.
Ironically, the point-leading trio are all former series "Most Improved
Driver" award winners. Paden and Wise shared the award in 2001 and
Rodela
was last year's recipient.

IRWINDALE NEXT AS LEWIS SEEKS 1ST USAC TITLE
Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. returns to the site of one of his
greatest victories this Saturday night as the USAC Western Sprint Cars
compete as part of a "tripleheader" program at the Irwindale
(Calif.) Speedway.
Lewis won last November's "Turkey Night Grand Prix" Midget
classic at
Irwindale but Saturday's event will mark his Irwindale Sprint Car debut.
He
has four wins so far in the 2003 Western Sprint Car series and only once
in
a dozen starts has he finished worse than seventh!
He leads 2001 Western Sprint Car Champion Tony Hunt by 96 points with
72
available at Irwindale. Hunt is coming off his second victory of the season,
at Madera, Calif. Sept. 20, and hopes to close the gap with a victory
Saturday.
A 30-lap feature event is slated on the track's 1/2-mile oval, in
conjunction with the USAC Western Midget Cars and USAC California Ford
Focus
Midget Cars. The Midgets will also compete on the 1/2-mile, while the
Focuses will compete on the 1/3-mile.
Lewis also won a 25-lap USAC National/Western Midget Car race at Irwindale
in April, halting Tracy Hines' bid for a $50,000 cash bonus for a sweep
of
the "Mopar Twin 25s Irwindale."
USAC WESTERN SPRINT CAR SERIES STANDINGS
1. Michael Lewis 658
2. Tony Hunt 562

DARLAND TAKES 52ND "HUT HUNDRED"
AARON FIKE, STEELE SPLIT "MOPAR TWIN 25s INDIANAPOLIS"
Dave Darland, Aaron Fike and Dave Steele posted USAC Midget Car feature
victories last weekend but J.J. Yeley and Tracy Hines continue to lead
the
series standings in quest of USAC "Triple Crown" status.
Darland, of Lincoln, Ind., won Thursday night's twice-postponed 52nd
Clabber Girl "Hut Hundred" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action
Track, leading
the final 25 laps after passing teammate Yeley on lap 76. Trailing Darland's
ASE/Ford Beast/Pink Ford at the checkered flag were Yeley, Bobby East,
Mike
Hess and Boston Reid. Hines finished 17th in the 100-lap race.
Aaron Fike of Galesburg, Ind. passed Yeley on the 12th lap of Saturday
night's 25-lap "Mopar Twin 25s Indianapolis" USAC National Midget
Car race
at Indianapolis Raceway Park and led the rest of the way in his McGladrey
&
Pullen/Azer Clinic Beast/Pink Ford. Yeley finished second after leading
the
first 11 laps, with East third, A.J. Fike fourth and Jay Drake fifth.
In the second "special event" 25-lapper, which offered no National
points,
Aaron Fike started dead last (24th) with a chance to claim a $50,000 cash
bonus from ARP for a victory. He finished sixth after a spirited charge.
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla., who claimed the $50,000 cash bonus last year
for
sweeping the IRP twins, won the 25-lap "special event" over
Hines, Cole
Carter, East and Yeley. Carter led three laps and Teddy Beach four before
yielding to Steele and his Mopar/Finish Line Towing Beast/Mopar.
Jerry Coons, Jr. posted the fastest qualifying time at Terre Haute
Thursday, while Hines was Saturday's fastest IRP qualifier after rains
forced an IRP postponement on Friday.
The 2003 USAC National Midget Car Series resumes October 18 with the
"Indy
Midget 200" at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway in South Boston,
Va.
Yeley and Hines each need a National Midget title to complete the USAC
"Triple Crown," since both have previously won the USAC Weld
Racing Silver
Crown and USAC National Sprint Car Series championships. A total of 75
points separate them going into the South Boston race.
USAC NATIONAL MIDGET CAR SERIES STANDINGS

separated by a single point in their battle for the runner-up position
in
the 2003 USAC National Sprint Car standings going into this Saturday night's
"Fall Harvest Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
The 2003
series concludes Wednesday night, October 8 at The Dirt Track at Lowe's
Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.
Drake and Hines each have three career Sprint Car wins at Terre Haute.
Tracy won the July 26 Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" feature,
while Drake
hasn't won at the 1/2-mile dirt track since his record-tying 2000 season.
J.J. Yeley, who leads the 2003 USAC National Sprint Car Series on his
way
to a second series championship, has six career Terre Haute wins on his
resume, including three of the last four Sprint Car outings.
Saturday night's events gets under way with practice at 5:30 pm and

SCHUMACHER WINS U.S. GRAND PRIX, NEARS 6TH WORLD TITLE
Michael Schumacher of Germany recorded an impressive victory in Sunday's
73-lap United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, leading
36 laps in his Ferrari, including the final 25!
He now stands on the threshold of a record sixth Formula 1 World Driving
Championship and could pocket that in the series finale October 12 at
the
Suzuka Circuit in Japan.
Schumacher started seventh in Sunday's race behind pole winner Kimi
Raikkonen of Finland but when rain fell on the circuit in the early laps
Schumacher raced to the front of the pack, taking the initial lead from
Raikkonen on lap 19. Following pit stops during which Mark Webber and
David
Coulthard led laps, Jenson Button assumed command of the race for 15 laps
until Schumacher stormed through the field again to take the lead on lap
38.
He yielded for one lap on lap 48 to Heinz-Harald Frentzen while in the
pits
for his final stop but proceeded to lead the final 25 laps and finished
with
an 18-second cushion over Raikkonen.
The United States Auto Club, as it has since the inaugural U.S. Grand
Prix
at IMS in 2000, again served as the host nation organizing club for the
event, assisting IMS President/CEO Tony George in the conducting of the
race. Officials from around the world operated under the supervision of
USAC
Chairman Johnny Capels, USAC Race Director Bob Pierson and FIA Chief
Technical Delegate Charlie Whiting.
Trailing Schumacher's Ferrari and Raikkonen's McLaren-Mercedes at the
finish of the 73-lap race were Heinz-Harald Frentzen of Germany in a
Sauber-Petronas, Jarno Trulli of Italy in a Renault, Nick Heidfeld of
Germany in a Sauber-Petronas, Juan Pablo Montoya of Colombia in a
Williams-BMW, Giancarlo Fisichella of Italy in a Jordan-Ford, Justin Wilson
of Great Britain in a Jaguar-Cosworth, Cristiano da Matta of Brazil in
a
Toyota and Jos Verstappen of the Netherlands in a Minardi-Cosworth.
Indianapolis 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve failed to finish the 73-lap
race, retiring on lap 66.

MOPAR "INDIANAPOLIS TWIN 25s" AT IRP FRIDAY OFFERS $50 G BONUS
52ND "HUT HUNDRED" THURSDAY AT TERRE HAUTE
The USAC National Midget Car Series faces two of its biggest events of
the
season in Indiana this week, with races in Terre Haute Thursday night
and
Indianapolis Friday night.
The tradition-rich 52nd Clabber Girl "Hut Hundred" is scheduled
Thursday
night at the 1/2-mile dirt Terre Haute Action Track, while the prize-money
rich Mopar "Indianapolis Twin 25s" are slated Friday night at
the .686-mile
paved Indianapolis Raceway Park oval.
The "Hut Hundred" was rained out in June and returns for its
52nd running
Thursday, with a 100-lap feature event on tap. Mike Hess of Petersburg,
Ill.
is the defending champion of the event presented by the Terre Haute
Convention and Visitors Bureau which gets under way with practice at 5:30
pm. Qualifying starts at 6:30 and the first of two scheduled 10-lap
"qualifying races" starts at 7:30. The 100-lap feature event
features a
33-car, three-abreast starting field!
Friday night's Mopar "Indianapolis Twin 25s" at IRP could earn
one driver
prize money totaling more than $60,000, which includes a $50,000 bonus
from
Automotive Racing Products for victories in both 25-lap features. Last
year
Dave Steele captured both IRP races and claimed more than $62,000 in total
prizes! Additional prize money at IRP this year includes lap prizes and
combined point rankings from Racer Magazine.
The IRP program calls for practice at 4 pm, qualifying at 5:10 and a
six-lap "dash" at 7. Two 12-lap "qualifying races"
will also precede the two
25-lap features. The first "25" affords National points, while
the second
"25," in which the first feature winner is required to start
dead last, is
considered a "special event" and affords no National points.
The Terre Haute and IRP events will be pivotal in the 2003 USAC National
Midget Car Championship battle, with three drivers battling for the prize.
J.J. Yeley, the leader, and runner-up Tracy Hines have added incentive,
with
the championship putting a lid on the career USAC "Triple Crown."
Yeley and
Hines each own a USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car title but neither has
a
Midget title yet. Third-ranking Bobby East is seeking his initial USAC
championship and trails Yeley by only 81 points, with 132 available this
week. Yeley leads Hines by only 16 going into Thursday night's Terre Haute
classic.

"WILD CHILD" TAKES MOPAR MILLION SPRINT AT ELDORA
HAUDENSCHILD EARNS $200,000, SMITH $125,000, GAINES $100,000!
Jac "Wild Child" Haudenschild of Wooster, Ohio won Saturday
night's "Mopar
Million Sprint at Eldora," the highest-paying sprint car race of
all time,
at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. The victory in the Million-dollar
event earned Haudenschild and his Larry Woodworth team an all-time Sprint
Car record $200,100 paycheck!
Driving the Larry Woodward Race to Hawaii.com Maxim, Haudenschild started
sixth and was fourth by lap three. He passed Rob Chaney for third on lap
eight and got by Russ Gamester for second on lap 22. On lap 29 he caught
the
outside cushion exiting turn two and shot past Dickie Gaines for the lead
and was never again headed, leading the final 12 laps for the historic
win.
Dean Jacobs led the first 19 laps after starting fourth but Gaines, coming
from 15th starting spot, took over the lead on lap 20. He led until
Haudenschild made his winning move nine laps later.
Stevie Smith of New Oxford, Pa. came from eighth starting spot to take
second at the checkered flag and earned $125,000, while Gaines, of Mitchell,
Ind., slipped to third at the finish to claim a $100,000 paycheck.
"This one means a lot," Haudenschild said. "Being a non-winged
race, it was
neat to run with these guys. I haven't run a lot with these guys a lot
over
the last few years. We definitely wanted to win this race, so this is
great."
Rounding out the "top-10" on the 1/2-mile dirt track were J.J.
Yeley of
Phoenix, Ariz., Rob Chaney of Wooster, Ohio, Bill Rose of Plainfield,
Ind.,
Dean Jacobs of Wooster, Ohio, Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., Jonathan
Vennard of Vincennes, Ind. and Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind.
The race drew an all-time USAC record 138 entries and Hines posted Friday
night's fastest qualifying time of 15.918 seconds. Hines flipped during
the
first heat race but his crew was able to repair his car in time for
Saturday's 40-lap finale.
Heat race winners included Kevin Huntley, Critter Malone, Stevie Smith,
Rose, Haudenschild, Vennard, Jacobs, Chaney, Gamester and Brad Noffsinger.
Brad Marvel won Saturday's F-Main, while Jimmy Laser won the E-Main, Troy
Cline won the D-Main, Boston Reid won the C-Main and Brian Tyler won the
B-Main.
USAC's National Sprint Car Series resumes October 4 with the "Fall

IRP’s MIDWAY ADDS EXCITEMENT TO MOPAR TWIN 25’s ACTION
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (September 2003) – No visit to the September
26th Mopar Twin 25’s Indianapolis will be complete without a tour
of the “Midway” at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
From historic racing memorabilia to world famous St. Elmo’s Steak
House signature spicy shrimp cocktails and steak sandwiches, fans attending
the Mopar Twin 25’s will find something to their liking. Racing
Historian Dick Wallen will have a booth offering a selection of books
as well as videos featuring classic race footage. Wallen’s book
“Distant Thunder: When Midgets Were Mighty,” will be available
for purchase.
So too will be the book by legendary engine builder Smokey Yunick, “The
Best Damn Garage in Town.” This three-volume set has become a very
popular and entertaining history of motorsports and “the world,
according to Smokey,” including such highlights as “walkin’
under a snake’s belly.”
In keeping with the historical theme, race enthusiast Bob Dorn will display
an exciting exhibit of vintage Midget race cars, including many beautifully
restored Offenhauser Midgets.
Event sponsor Mopar will also have a booth, as will many of the associate
sponsors, including ARP.
“It is our desire to make this evening more than just a race.
There will be something here that everyone can enjoy from an entertainment
standpoint,” said Steve Lewis, producer of the Mopar Twin 25’s.
“We feel it is important to include a little tribute to the great
sport of Midget racing which is special to all of us, and we suspect,
also to the people who come to IRP, whether it’s their first or
hundredth time.”
The format of the Mopar Twin 25’s features a huge $50,000 ARP Bonus
Prize given to the driver who wins both of the night’s 25-lap feature
races. Under the Monza-style format, the winner of the first race must
then pass the entire field in the second race, in 25 action-packed laps,
in order to win the $50,000 ARP Bonus.
The Mopar Twin 25’s Indianapolis will run the Friday night of the
weekend the Formula One series returns to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Last year’s inaugural running of the event saw in attendance both
local open wheel race fans, as well as many European spectators witnessing
their first Midget race.
Automotive Racing Products (ARP) is the sponsor of the $50,000 Bonus
Prize. Additional Associate Sponsors include Team ASE, K&N Engineering,
Racer Magazine, MSD Ignition, Beyer Trailers, Calico Coatings and Turbines,
Inc.

converge on the 1/2-mile dirt oval to make up the 150-entry field for
what
promises to be an American short-track classic.
Drivers will cut a $1,000,000 pie, with the winner taking home a check
for

new USAC series. The USAC Western Sprint Cars and Midget Cars will also

Ryan
Kaplan. Bobby McGowan led the first three laps and Galedrige led the next

WISE TAKES BAKERSFIELD MIDGETS, MADERA NEXT
Josh Wise of Riverside, Calif. threw his hat in the ring for the 2003
USAC
Western Midget Car title Saturday night, winning the feature event at
the
Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway. He trails leader Steve Paden by only 42
points going into this Saturday night's "Harvest Classic 150"
at the Madera
(Calif.) Speedway. A 50-lap Midget, 50-lap USAC Western Sprint Car and

on the
1/3-mile paved oval.
Wise's second Bakersfield victory of the year came in a shortened 30-lapper
which was checkered flagged after 27 laps due to an accident and impending
curfew. Four drivers flipped during the 27 laps but there were no driver
injuries.
Trailing Wise's Dino Tomassi Mopar Parts/Finish Line Towing Beast/Mopar

CREEK COUNTY MIDGETS RAINED OUT
"HUT 100" & "INDIANAPOLIS TWIN 25s" NEXT
Rain forced cancellation of Saturday night's USAC National Midget Car

KAEDING LOGS 1ST SILVER CROWN WIN AT TULSA
SERIES CONCLUDES OCT. 10-11 AT NEW YORK STATE FAIRGROUNDS
Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. recorded his initial USAC Weld Racing
Silver Crown race victory in Sunday's O'Reilly "Tulsa 100" at
the Tulsa
Fairgrounds Motorplex in Tulsa, Okla.
Kaeding was leading when the race was halted for the second time due
to
track conditions in the interest of driver safety and checkered flagged
after 77 of the scheduled 100 laps. The race had been halted 24 laps earlier
for track conditions and maintenance.
J.J. Yeley finished second and emerged with a 72-point lead in the series
standings with only 66 available in the series finale October 10-11 at
Syracuse, N.Y.
"I had the dominant car today," admitted a happy Kaeding in
victory lane.
"We gambled with softer tires at the start and I was worried about
them in
the later laps but we never got to where I had to abuse them. We were
lucky
when the red came out at lap 53 because I had broken a shock and we were
able to fix that. It's been a while since I've run these cars on dirt
and we
were really confident, so I don't think things would have changed if we'd
run the full 100."
Tyler Walker, after leading the first seven laps, finished third ahead
of
Aaron Fike and Tracy Hines. The race was the first for the series at the
reconfigured 3/4-mile dirt oval since 1980.
Yeley won the pole at 108.342 mph but slipped at the start and never
got
back to the front. Mike Hess won the 15-lap "qualifying race"
which preceded
the feature event.
The 2003 USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship Series concludes
October 10-11 at the New York State Fairgrounds mile dirt oval in Syracuse.
