Jennerstown to host championship series event
Myrtle Beach, SC – Jennerstown Speedway will host the second stop
of the five-race Championship Series for the USAR Hooters ProCup Series
on Saturday, October 4th. The Charlie Campbell Memorial Miller Lite 250
presented by Lucas Oil Products will feature over 50 drivers from the
two divisions as they continue their quest to win the 2003 Hooters ProCup
Series national championship.
Last season Mardy Lindley scored his only win to date in the Championship
Series at the track located in southwestern Pennsylvania. The South Carolina
driver also has recorded a regular season win at the track, which will
make him one of the favorites to get the win.
Brian Ross, who finished second in the Northern Division this season
to top seed Jeff Agnew, collected one of his two regular season wins at
Jennerstown and always looks forward to returning to one of his favorite
tracks on the schedule.
“Jennerstown has been one of the tracks we always seem to run pretty
good on each time we go there,” said Ross. “Hopefully we can
have some more luck there again in October.”
The Charlie Campbell Memorial Miller Lite 250 presented by Lucas Oil
Products is named after the late Charlie Campbell who was the pilot on
the tragic flight that claimed the lives of the 1992 Winston Cup Champion
Alan Kulwicki, Dan Duncan, Mark Brooks and Campbell. Each of the four
men who perished in the accident has one race named in their honor during
the Championship Series to remember their contributions to the sport of
stock car racing.
This is the third season of the special format for the Championship Series
which takes the regular season finish of the driver and combines points
gained by the driver based on their regular season finish in the points
standings and points gained at each race of the five-race series.
This will be the second stop in the Northern Division for the Championship
Series before the final three races will be held at Southern Division
tracks. Among the Southern Division competitors who have enjoyed success
at Jennerstown Speedway is Shane Huffman. Huffman who won five regular
season races en route to securing the top seed from the Southern Division
also has one career win in the Championship Series that was collected
at Jennerstown Speedway.
Huffman opened up this year’s Championship Series in dominating
fashion winning the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250 at
Winchester Speedway two weeks ago and will join Lindley as a previous
winner at Jennerstwon this weekend.
Three-time Hooters ProCup Series champion Bobby Gill has also recorded
a win at Jennerstown Speedway and Stacy Puryear collected his only career
win in the Series at the track back in 2001.

Winchester Accident Results in Kauffman’s Worst USAR Finish Of
The Year
LaGrange, IN – The United Speed Alliance Racing (USAR) Hooter’s
ProCup Series completed their first of five championship races last Saturday
evening at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, IN.
The Alan Kulwicki Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250 had a total of 43
drivers show up for competition. The series entry form allowed for 40
competitors to start the event on time as well as two provisionals for
any competitor in the top 10 in final division points that didn’t
qualify on time for the event. Northern regular, Scott Baker, had to use
a provisional due to trouble with their machine during Advanced Auto Parts
qualifying. With Baker’s trouble a total of 41 competitors took
to the track for the start of the event.
17-year-old Joel Kauffman qualified for the race in the 11th position
and was caught up in a multi-car wreck early in the race. “I am
not sure what happened,” said a dejected Kauffman. “I seen
the wreck happening in turn 4 and had it cleared but got hit from behind
and turned around.” Remarked Kauffman. “I am sure that whoever
hit me was probably hit from behind as well. It is all part of short track
racing. I just hate it for my sponsors and team. We had a good car for
this first championship race. We will just regroup this week and get ready
for Jennerstown.” Concluded Kauffman. The team was able to work
on the car and get Kauffman back out to run some laps. Kauffman finished
33rd, 96 laps down. Southern Division driver Shane Huffman won the race.
Team L.A. Motorsports will take their L.A. West Luxury Vehicles, Choo
Choo Customs Chevrolet to Jennerstown Speedway for an all day test this
Friday in preparation for the second championship race to be held on October
4th. Kauffman’s first experience of the track earlier this season
was positive. It was the Rookie’s first USAR race ever and first
time visiting Jennerstown Speedway. He qualified on the outside pole and
finished the race in a respectable 8th place.

Jackaroo Team Has Engine Trouble at Winchester, Looking Forward to Jennerstown
by: Jimmy Burns Motorsports
After finishing 11th in the Northern Division points standings, driver
Jimmy Burns and his Jackaroo Barbecue Sauce sponsored team, entered this
weekends USAR Pro Cup Series event, the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Naturally
Fresh Foods 250 presented by Astral Industries, at the Winchester Speedway
in Winchester, Indiana with high hopes and expectations after a season
of bad luck and disappointing finishes. The team was hoping for a fresh
start in this first of five Championship Series Events, thanks to this
unique playoff style showdown. The USAR Championship Series places the
top 30 competitors from the Northern and Southern divisions together for
a five race championship series where all the money and prestige are on
the line. “For our team, the championship series is a fresh start
and we hope that we used up all of our bad luck during the regular season.
Now we can go out and show everyone how strong this team is,” said
driver Jimmy Burns prior to the day’s events.
The team practiced well at the extremely fast high banks of Winchester
and qualified 22nd, which the team was happy with considering the degree
of competition at the Championship series events. Early in the race Jimmy
held his own running with series favorites Jason Sarvis, Steve Christian,
and Brian Ross. Jimmy would make it through the “Big One”
a big pileup on the front straightaway and felt as though his race was
going very well, slowly picking his way to the front and feeling confident
running with the caliber of cars surrounding him. Just after a radio conversation
with his crew relaying how happy Jimmy was with his cars handling, the
engine would loose a cylinder and a few laps later would slow and make
the team retire from the race before the 50 lap mark. “This a real
tough way to start the championship series. Michael and the whole crew
did a great job of getting the car to handle well and I was really just
trying to keep in touch with the leaders and looking forward to a great
run. It is just hard to swallow when you have a great car like we did
and we couldn’t capitalize on it. We are unsure of our plans for
next season and we really could have used a great run. We’ll get
things ready and see what we can do at Jennerstown in a few weeks,”
said a dejected Jimmy after the race.
The team will now have two weeks to prepare for their next event at the
Jennerstown Speedway in Jennerstown, Pennsylvania on Saturday October
4th.
Jimmy Burns Motorsports would like to thank their sponsors: Jackaroo
Barbecue Sauce, Toxabsorb, Frank Farrell Trucking, RPM cards, Messer MG
Industries, Dayco, Mothers, Stewart Warner, Synergyn, Deka Batteries,
and Leaf Racewear.

Huffman Sends Message
Winchester, IN – Domination. That would sum up the Alan Kulwicki
Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250 presented by Astral Industries at Winchester
Speedway on Saturday night.
Shane Huffman bypassed Hal Goodson on the opening lap of the race and
never looked back. Huffman led every lap and beat Mardy Lindley to the
finish by 4.998 seconds.
“I can’t believe the fashion that we won it,’’
said Huffman. “I believe we led every lap, and that’s pretty
amazing to me. Everything was just rolling our way.”
And the fortuitous breaks started early for the Southern Division champion.
Huffman, who qualified second, started to the inside pole-sitter Hal
Goodson, who elected to start in the outside lane, and was able to beat
the Darlington, SC driver off of the second turn to lead the first—and
every—lap.
Goodson, who won a $1,000 for winning the Advance Auto Parts Pole Award,
soon came under fire from Jeff Agnew for the second spot and lost the
position on the 10th lap to the Northern Division champion.
After moving into second, Agnew was already a second behind Huffman,
who caught the tail end of the field by lap 12. Huffman’s advantage
evaporated on the next circuit, however, when 10-car melee brought out
the red flag. Several contenders saw their night end early in the accident.
Clay Rogers, who won last year’s event, spun down the frontstretch,
blocking the track and taking the many contenders with him. Mario Gosselin,
Glenn Gault, Joel Kauffman, Michael Ritch, Stacy Puryear, David Pletcher
and Danny O’Quinn all received heavy damage in the crash and fell
from contention.
“I really don’t know what happened. Everything was going
good, and the next thing you know I was going backwards,” said Rogers.
“I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if I got into
oil or something broke or I got hit from behind.”
Whatever the cause, the end result ruined the chances of victory for
all involved. When the red flag was lifted 7:02 minutes later, Huffman
continued where he left off, blistering the track and the competition.
By lap 78, Huffman had put a lap on some formidable foes. The Hickory,
NC driver put Bobby Gill, Mart Nesbitt and Kertus Davis a lap down.
While Huffman was knifing through lapped cars, he began to stretch his
lead over Agnew and Goodson.
“Some people moved the right ways at times, and we were able to
open a substantial lead,” said Huffman. “Lapped traffic was
really bad, but we were good enough to get down to the bottom and go.”
And go Huffman did.
Huffman lapped all the way up to the seventh position when the caution
flag waved for the third time at lap 90. Agnew and Goodson weren’t
as fortunate. The two were involved into the third caution. Agnew received
damage trying to avoid the carnage, and Goodson tagged Agnew doing the
same.
Huffman, and the rest of the lead-lap cars, came down pit road for service
on lap 91. The Jennie-O Turkey Store crew sent Huffman back on the track
with the lead. But for the first time all night, he would have some company
when the green waved on lap 97.
Mardy Lindley, who started fifth, was able to stay with Huffman and pressured
the leader for 10 laps. But as the race progressed, so did Huffman’s
lead.
By lap 146, Huffman again had clear sailing, but Lindley had company
for the second spot. Jason Sarvis, who started 15th, moved to the bumper
of the Lindley and began to look for a way around. Lindley held off Sarvis
for the next 79 laps until the 2002 Hooters ProCup champion finally took
over second on lap 225. But it was too little to late as Huffman held
a 3.5-second lead over Sarvis with just 20 laps remaining.
Sarvis appeared to be en route to a second-place finish but tangled with
the lapped car of Derrick Kelley on the last lap and lost the position.
“Lapped cars really did a pretty good job all night. With five
laps to go, [Derrick Kelley] decided he wanted to race,” said Sarvis.
“I was just going to follow him, and he slammed on brakes going
into [turn] 3 and tore my car up. I didn’t have anything for Shane,
but we had a second-place car and came home third.”
Despite losing the second spot at the end, Sarvis did move into second
in the point standings with his third-place finish.
Lindley took advantage of Sarvis’ misfortune and finished second,
4.998 seconds behind Huffman.
Jason McLellan had the highest finish of the Northern Division drivers,
coming home in fourth spot. Benny Gordon picked up the Miller Lite Rookie
of the Race Award for his fifth-place finish. After starting in 30th,
Jay Fogleman rallied to a 6th-place finish and pocketed $500 for the Hard
Charger Award.
Huffman added $1,000 to his $10,000 winner’s check for being the
Lucas Oil Products Halfway Leader Award. The race was slowed seven times
for 42 caution laps.
The Big One – Winchester Speedway is known for
its high banks, speed and, unfortunately, big wrecks. The historic, half-mile
track lived up to its reputation on Saturday night. On lap 13, the frontstretch
became a salvage yard as 10 cars collided and blocked the track, bringing
out the red flag. David Pletcher’s 21st-place finish was the highest
of any driver that was involved in the accident.
Baby Steps – After being involved in the 10-car
crash, Joel Kauffman rolled across the stripe in 33rd position. Although
disappointed, the rookie driver was still upbeat about the situation.
“I had it cleared on the low side, and I just got hit from the
back. The guys worked hard and got us back out to make some laps,”
said Kauffman. “It’s tough because this is our home track,
but I’ve run six races here and this is the first time I’ve
finished.’’
Benny is Back – Benny Gordon had an up-and-down
regular season, finishing in the top-10 in the first five events before
suffering three finishes outside the top-10 to end the season. At Winchester,
Gordon’s 5th-place finish was the highest finish of any rookie.
“We’ve been really studying what we’ve been doing wrong
over the last few weeks,” said Gordon, who took Hickory off to prepare
for Winchester. “Late in the season, we tried to go faster and went
in the wrong direction. We got our cars back together and hit on some
stuff. We had a good racecar tonight.”
Rough Night for Rookies – Besides Benny Gordon,
the 2003 USAR Hooters ProCup rookie class had a tough night. Kauffman,
who finished 33rd, and O’Quinn, who finished 24th, suffered damage
in the 13th-lap accident. Scott Baker pulled the wrong gear in qualifying
and had to take a provisional. Things didn’t get better during the
race as Baker hit the wall later as did and limped home in 30th.
“It was just on of those days at Winchester. We unloaded and the
car wasn’t fast. We tried to work on it and make it faster,”
said Baker. “I found out the right-rear chain was too short and
it caused the rear end to lift up. It was just one thing after another.”
Keith Roggen found the wall as well and finished 31st. Gerald Davis experienced
mechanical problems and finished 37th.
Smiling Fogleman – Jay Fogleman got three laps
of practice, hit the wall in qualifying and started 30th. He didn’t
win. He didn’t lead a lap, but you couldn’t tell by Jay Fogleman’s
mannerisms following the race.
“It started out to be a terrible day. The car was so good during
the race I was able get up front,” said Fogleman. “We had
a legitimate top-10 car. I really feel good about the rest of the Championship
Series.”
Fogleman’s previous best finish at Winchester was 12th.
Flag Waving, ProCup and Winchester Speedway - Lynn St. James has done
many things at racetracks around the country, but the 7-time Indianapolis
500 competitor added several more feats to her racing resume at Winchester
Speedway.
St. James toured the high-banked track in Kertus Davis’ backup
car after qualifying. It was the first time that St. James had seen the
track and her first time in a ProCup machine. St. James experienced another
first by waving the green flag for the start of the Alan Kulwicki Memorial
Naturally Fresh Foods 250.

Kauffman Ready To Tackle Winchester
LaGrange, IN - The USAR Hooter’s ProCup Series heads to Winchester
Speedway Saturday, September 20th for the running of the Alan Kulwicki
Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250. This event will be the first of 5
championship races for the series. The other championship races include
Jennerstown Speedway in Pennsylvania, Myrtle Beach Speedway in South Carolina,
Peach State Speedway in Georgia and Lakeland Speedway in Florida.
Winchester will mark the first race of the season in which South and
North competitors of USAR come together to compete. Several veteran short
trackers will be on hand. When one thinks about veteran short track racers
they may think of Bobby Gill, Brian Ross, Jay Fogleman or Jeff Agnew.
While Joel Kauffman may not fit into the ranks of “veteran”
at this time, the 17-year-old racing stand out is surely a threat amongst
the rest to be competitive. In only his third full year of competition
in a full sized stock car, Kauffman has amassed records that several “veterans”
are yet to accomplish. Kauffman is a multiple winner in the Sunoco Super
Series. He holds qualifying track records at several racetracks across
the country and last year became the youngest touring series champion
in the country when he outlasted veteran Junior Hanley for the championship
in the Sunoco Super Series at only 16 years of age. This season, the well
polished 17-year-old has gained the respect of many in the Hooter’s
ProCup series and looks forward to the 5 championship races to see just
how he stacks up against the competition.
The #44, L.A. West Luxury Vehicles, Choo Choo Customs Chevrolet of Kauffman
will begin the championship series events 6th place in points. He has
his eyes set on Rookie of the Year, an accomplishment he achieved previously
in 2001 with the Sunoco Super Series. Kauffman understands it will be
a hard fought battle that may go down to the final event. Rookie competitor
Danny O’Quinn, Jr. will start the championship series events in
7th place, just 2 points behind Kauffman. One may think of this as a pressure
situation, however Kauffman seems to operate better under high pressure.
After all, last season the Sunoco Super Series Championship came down
the last event at Indianapolis Raceway Park between Kauffman and Junior
Hanley. Kauffman was the last competitor to attempt a qualifying run and
understood going out that he had to put his racecar on the pole to start
the race with the points lead. Not only did the 16-year-old put his racer
on the pole, he broke the track record on his first lap. Kauffman won
the championship by 2 points.
It would only be speculation for anyone to say what the future holds
for this bright, talented young man. One things that all of the USAR competitors
know is that right now, this “kid” has made his presence known
at the race track and that the amount of races they have left with this
17-year-old are quite possibly numbered as he will most likely continue
his rise to stardom.

HAWK SAW BLADES TEAM = TOUGHNESS AND DURABILITY
Don Satterfield and his HAWK SAW BLADES TEAM members are prime examples
of racers with toughness and durability. The Satterfield led team is one
of approximately 9 or 10 teams that made every venue for the 2003 USAR
HOOTERS PRO CUP Southern Division tour.
Like many of the groups that make up this series, Don, and his all volunteer
crew have often burned the midnight oil preparing for the races. You see,
Don and Darlene Satterfield own a small construction business. Don has
worked and raced full time this year. They are just one example of a couple,
there are many other teams like them, with plenty of other obligations
to meet.
Most days begin very early for Don hard at work with a crew of men. During
the course of a day you are likely to find the veteran race driver involved
with many tasks and responsibilities of his business. At some point you
will probably find him working from a ladder, directing helpers, making
stops at several places, checking on past and prospective jobs, figuring
bids, and going to the shop for materials. He also answers phone calls
and questions practically the entire day concerning racing and his business.
There are many other racers and teams similar to Don Satterfield and
the HAWK SAW BLADE TEAM all across this great land of America. Those crews,
drivers, and sponsors deserve a lot of credit for the job they do on and
off the racetracks. Most work all day at regular jobs, spend half the
night working on set ups and preparing for the next event. They also represent
many of us, the average citizen, WHO LOVE WHAT THEY DO AND DO WHAT THEY
LOVE.
Finishing 12th in the points race is an accomplishment which the HAWK
SAW BLADES TEAM can be proud and hold their heads up .Of course they would
like to have finished higher. All teams except the point’s leader
can say they same thing.
There were times during the year the team seemed stricken with bad luck.
However, their love for racing, a desire to compete, toughness, and durability
carried all the way to the last SOUTHERN DIVISION event this past weekend.
They and approximately 54 other teams are now qualified for the end of
the year showdowns.
WORK. That is what all groups will be doing now that the Championship
Series is here. Satterfield reported transmission troubles at Hickory
last week and dropped out after nine laps were completed.
Don is hoping that his new autograph card will be available for the upcoming
event Through a cooperative effort with the SHRINE BOWL OF THE CAROLINAS
this new card is possible. He and many drivers look forward to meeting
fans across the country in the pre race activities. His new card will
carry HAWK SAW BLADES information as well as the web address for the finest
Shrine All Star Football Game in America.
Toll free numbers for the Shriner Hospitals in the United States and
Canada have also been displayed on Satterfields number 1 car for approximately
half the races this season.
Good luck and safe traveling to everyone involved in the USAR HOOTERS
PRO CUP SERIES as the championship races are about to begin this week
in Winchester.
Remember: TOUGHNESS AND DURABILITY…= #1
DEAN NINTH IN USAR FINALE
HICKORY, NC (Sept. 13, 2003) – Adam Dean, drove his Wesson Cooking
Oil-Peter Pan Peanut Butter sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo to a ninth
place finish at the Hickory Motor Speedway last weekend.
“We had a great car today,” said Dean. “My car owner,
Mart Nesbitt and his team came out here prepared to win, and we wanted
to cash in on this last race of the season. Billy Owen is a great crew
chief, and I hope we can figure out a way for him to remain with my team
next year.”
“We also wanted to get another win for our friends at ConAgra Foods.
The Wesson Cooking Oil and Peter Pan Peanut Butter people have been great
to us this year, and we wanted to win at Hickory for those guys and Galaxy
Foods,” he said.
Dean qualified for the USAR regular season finale in the sixth position
and battled throughout the event in the top five positions.
While running fourth with fifteen laps to go, Shane Huffman spun Dean
coming out of turn two. “I’d passed the guy two or three times,
and he knew the only way he was going to beat me was to spin me out,”
stated Dean after the event. “ I got a little loose over there off
turn two, and he finished me off,” he explained.
Because of the spin, Dean was relegated to the rear of the field and
had to battle back from the 22nd position to ninth in 14 laps. “This
car was a rocket tonight, and I’m just real proud of the Nesbitt
organization and my crew for giving me such a strong car. We were as fast
as the leaders all night. Track position just kept us from leading this
thing,” he said. “That’s OK, I raced these guys clean
all year and I think I’ve shown the Hooter’s Officials and
the drivers in the Series that I race hard and I race clean. Some of those
guys may have finished in front of us tonight, but they didn’t outrun
us,” said Dean.
Agnew & Huffman Enter as Top Seeds
Myrtle Beach, SC— When the checkered flag waved at Hickory Motor
Speedway on September 13th, the USAR Hooters ProCup regular season ended.
Now, fifty-eight drivers will turn their attention to the Championship
Series, and they have million reasons why, literally.
The Alan Kulwicki Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250 at Winchester Speedway
on September 20th will be the first of five Championship Series events
that will determine the 2003 USAR Hooters ProCup Champion. The champion
will take home the $250,000 championship share of the $1,000,000 points
and posted awards fund.
Shane Huffman and Jeff Agnew will take top seeds and a 40-point cushion
over the other 56 championship contenders. However, neither driver has
a win at the high-banked, half-mile track. Agnew’s best finish was
second in last year’s Championship Series event. Huffman’s
best finish came in the same event as the Hickory driver finished third
behind Agnew and Clay Rogers.
Jason Sarvis and Brian Ross nailed down the second seeds for the Championship
Series by posting strong runs in their respective divisions regular-season
finale. Ross finished second at Motordrome in the Northern Division while
Sarvis picked up his second win of the season at Hickory Motor Speedway
in the Southern Division. Ross struggled to a 23rd-place finish in last
year’s event. Sarvis finished fourth last season and went on to
win the USAR Hooters ProCup Championship.
Steven Christian and Kertus Davis will be third seeds as the Championship
Series begins, but they have taken different routes getting there.
Christian lost the second seed late in the season to Sarvis and only
has one top-5 finish in the last five events. On the other hand, Davis
has three consecutive top-3 finishes, including his first-career win.
Michael Ritch and Jay Fogleman are seeded fourth for the Championship
Series. Ritch moved up from the seventh seed by finishing third at Hickory
Motor Speedway. Fogleman slipped from the second seed to the fourth seed
in the last two events of the Northern Division after back-to-back finishes
outside the top-5.
Mardy Lindley and Eric Corbett will round out the top-5 seeds for the
Championship Series.
Below is a listing of all drivers eligible for the Championship Series.
The listings show the driver, how many points they accumulated during
the regular season, how many races they started during the year and how
many points they will have under the Championship Series format entering
this weekend at Winchester Speedway for the running of the Alan Kulwicki
Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250.
Despite Costly Night at Hickory, Christian Still 3rd in Points
Atlanta, GA., (September 14, 2003) – Steven Christian and the Lucas
Oil team ended the last race of the regular USAR season exactly where
they took the green Saturday night.
After a 12th place start, Christian was first collected up in a lap 41
skirmish that claimed his rear bumper. Not thirty laps later, another
encounter cost him the nose. After visiting the pits three times for sheet
metal repair, Christian was off, but not in time to beat the pace car
out.
“When we went a lap down, I knew it was going to be hard to make
it up”, said Christian.
The tone was set for the evening, as Christian lined up on the inside
following caution after caution, only to fall back behind the leaders
shortly after the green flew.
Following two more trips to the pits on lap 122 and 174 to remove yet
more dangling sheet metal, Christian managed to bring the heavily damaged
#2 Lucas Oil Chevrolet across the start/finish line 12th to end the night.
The first event of the Five Race Championship Series is just a week away,
with the Southern and Northern teams converging on Winchester Speedway.
“We’ll be optimistic going into Winchester”, said Christian.
“Our luck has got to change.”
The Hickory event will be aired by SPEED on Wednesday night at 10 p.m.
(EST).
USAR Driver Danny Sammons To Appear At Benson Motorcycles In Muncie,
Ind.,
On Fri., Sept. 19
MUNCIE, IN - Danny Sammons, a rising star on the USAR Hooters ProCup
stock car series, will spend the afternoon of Friday Sept. 19 visiting
with fans from 2 to 4 p.m. at Benson Motorcycles Inc. in Muncie, Ind.
The special appearance by the 19-year-old driver from Bordentown, N.J.,
comes in advance of the ensuing day's USAR Hooters ProCup 250 at Indiana's
Winchester Speedway.
Sammons will sign autographs and visit with race fans and customers of
Benson Motorcycles Inc., an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer that is
sponsoring the youngster's Saturday assault on the Winchester high banks.
The HeartAttack, Inc. No. 97 Ford that Sammons will drive at Winchester
will also be on display.
A variety of giveaways will be offered to fans who stop by to visit Sammons
at Benson Motorcycles, including Harley-Davidson, Hooters and Danny Sammons
t-shirts, hats and apparel.
Sammons, in his third year of USAR competition, finished 10th in the
recently-completed Hooters ProCup Northern Series points standings. He
will begin pursuing the tour's national title with this Saturday's 250-lap
event at Winchester, which kicks off the five-race Four Champions Challenge
Series pitting drivers from USAR's North and South divisions. A $250,000
payoff awaits the overall USAR champion after the five races.
Sammons enters Saturday's action at Winchester with high hopes. He ran
very well in the track's Northern Series show earlier this summer, maintaining
a spot in the top five until oil from another driver's blown engine caused
him to slide into the outside wall.
Benson Motorcycles Inc. is located at 6410 West McGalliard in Muncie,
Ind. Steve and Phil Benson operate the always family-owned business that
has been serving the area for 22 years. Two local representatives will
be choosen to be honorary pit crew members on Sammons's team on Saturday
at Winchester. Benson will also be displaying a 100th anniversary Harley-Davidson
bike at the track.

Back On Track
Hickory, NC—Earlier this week, Jason Sarvis said he would like
to win a few more races before the 2003 season ended.
Well, the 2002 Hooters ProCup Champion can mark one win off his things-to-do
list.
Sarvis took the lead away from Michael Ritch with 23 laps remaining and
survived a green-white-checkered restart to win the Miller Lite 250 presented
by Tucson at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
"Mike [Hester] worked his tail off on this car, and I'm just glad
to get him back in victory lane as hard as he's worked," said Sarvis.
"I don't know anybody in racing that has worked any harder in the
last three or four months than him."
Sarvis also had to work a little overtime himself on Saturday night.
The Myrtle Beach driver spent much of the night trying to catch the leaders.
Sarvis, who started fourth in the 28-car field, moved into second on lap
34 by following Clay Rogers past race-leader and pole-sitter Joe Gaita.
Sarvis, however, would have trouble moving to the point.
Rogers, who led a race-high 90 laps, was able to fend off Sarvis’
bid for the top position on numerous occasions over the next 75 laps.
Despite dueling for the lead, the top twosome was able to stretch a 2-second
lead over Ritch, Bobby Gill and Joe Gaita. The healthy advantage would
disappear on lap 120 as the eighth caution flag of the evening waved.
Rogers and Sarvis, as well as most of the lead-lap cars, came to the
attention of their crews on lap 122, but Bobby Gill stayed out to pick
up $1,000 for the Lucas Oil Products Halfway Leader Award. Gaita, Greg
Marlowe, Danny O’Quinn, Jr., and Brandon McCarson also elected to
stay on the track. Sarvis was able to beat Rogers out of the pits, but
the two would line up 10th and 11th for the restart.
Gill held down the top spot for 15 laps before making a stop under caution
on lap 139, giving the lead back to O’Quinn. The rookie would have
company out front in the form of 2003 Southern Division champion Shane
Huffman on the restart, however. And it wasn't pleasant, as the two would
trade the lead— and paint— on lap144.
Huffman nudged O’Quinn up the track in turn 1 and the rookie returned
the favor in the fourth turn to retake the lead.
“I was in a hurry to get back up front,” O’Quinn said
of the rubbing. “He tapped me, and I tapped him back.”
O’Quinn had good reason to be in a hurry.
Running the high groove around the .363-mile track, Ritch, who restarted
12th on lap 126, moved into second by lap 160. Ritch completed his run
to the front six laps later as he swung around the outside of O’Quinn
for the lead. O’Quinn, who pitted on lap 99, began to fade farther
into the field as his tires went away, allowing Rogers and Sarvis to move
into second and third by lap 175.
Rogers and Sarvis battled for the next 13 laps before Sarvis grabbed
the second spot on lap 189 and set his sights on Ritch, who had built
a 1.5-second lead over the field. But Sarvis would have little help erasing
Ritch’s margin as Mardy Lindley’s spin brought out the race's
11th caution on lap 197, pulling him to Ritch’s rear-deck lid for
the restart.
arvis tucked under Ritch when the green waved on lap 202 and the lead
duo spent the next three laps door-handle-to-door-handle. Ritch was able
to stave off Sarvis for 25 laps, but it was only a matter of time before
Sarvis made his way out front.
“Sarvis definitely had a better car than us. Our car was tight
and I couldn't get enough forward bite out of the corners,” said
Ritch. “I messed up and locked the rear tires up getting in [turn]
3, and he made his move.”
Sarvis dove to the bottom as Ritch recovered and made the winning pass
at the exit of turn 4 on lap 227. Sarvis would need more than 23 laps
to pick up his second win of the season, however, as the caution would
wave on lap 249 for the spinning car of Jimmy McClain. R.J. Beshore, who
fought motor problems all day, lost his power plant on lap 249, slicking
up the bottom groove. The race remained under caution until the final
restart at lap 263.
“We had a great race car tonight, but I didn't want to see that
last caution,” said Sarvis, who lost a last green-white-checkered
to Mario Gosselin at Peach State Speedway. “I thought about it a
couple of times, but that was the past.”
Indeed it was.
Sarvis calmly made his way through the gearbox and beat the field to
the line by .227 seconds.
“We need to go out and win about three or four more of these and
we'll be all right,” said Sarvis. “This should give us some
momentum now. We're pumped about going into the Championship Series.”
Rogers nipped Ritch at the line to finish second. Huffman finished fourth,
while Gill completed the top-5.
Gaita, who won the Advanced Auto Parts Pole Award, had trouble in the
rear end of his Ford and finished 22nd. O’Quinn, who also started
on the front row, held on to finish sixth and grab his seventh Miller
Lite Rookie of the Race Award in the 2003 season. Jeff Roark pocketed
$500 for advancing nine spots during the race. The race was slowed 16
times for 107 laps of caution.
MILLER LITE 250 NOTEBOOK:
Back In Black – Jason Sarivs’ win at Hickory
Motor Speedway was his second of the season, but it was his first in a
Taurus—and a black bull at that.
“That was the first black race car that I've driven to Victory
Lane since I had a black-and-orange go-kart,” said Sarvis. “Maybe
that car brought us some luck back. Those were the colors when they we're
winning all the races back at Myrtle Beach.”
USAR Modified – Steven Christian didn't bring
a modified to Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday night, but he left with
his car looking like one.
Christian lost the rear bumper early in the race and pitted to remove
the hanging sheet metal. Christian returned to the track deep into the
28-car field. And things would get worse for the Georgia driver.
Christian, who came into the season finale 1-point behind Jason Sarvis
in the point standings, lost the nose cone while trying to get back to
the front of the field.
“It all started off with poor qualifying. We got up to ninth or
tenth, and we had a decent car,” said Christian. “We probably
had a top-5 car, but we got caught up with a car and tore the rear bumper
off and it all went downhill from there.” Christian finished one
lap off the pace in 12th place.
Decent Debuts – Blake Feese and Brandon McCarson
made their first starts in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series at Hickory Motor
Speedway. Feese, piloting a Chevrolet from the Fitz/Bradshaw Racing stables,
started the night in the 20th spot and finished 15th. Feese lost a lap
early in the event dropped from contention, but the rookie did get valuable
seat time, completing 261 laps in his debut.
While much of the attention landed on Feese, McCarson showed he was just
as competent behind the wheel. McCarson qualified seventh and ran as high
as fifth before a late spin relegated him to a 13th-place finish.
“I'm disappointed in the way the night ended. I thought we had
a better race car than what we finished,” said McCarson. “I
don't understand how a lap car could jack me up like that. He got me out
of line and two laps later, they wrecked in front of me. I would have
missed the wreck had he not of done that. It's disappointing, but it's
all part of the learning curve.”
McCarson plans to compete full time in the Hooters ProCup Series in 2004.
Five Deuces – Clay Rogers finished second for
the fourth time in the 2003 season on Saturday night, but being the first
loser doesn't seem to bother the Mooresville, NC driver too much.
“We'll take another second place finish. We're going to second
place them to death,” said Rogers. “If we bring home five
second-place finishes in the Championship Series, we'll be sitting at
the head table at the end of the year.”

Huffman To Take Victory Tour Back Home
Myrtle Beach, SC— Shane Huffman finally got to take a victory lap
at Hickory Motor Speedway on July 26 after winning the Galaxy Foods 250
at his home track.
The win was Huffman’s fifth of the season in the Southern Division
of the USAR Hooters ProCup Series and extended his points lead over Steve
Christian to 285 points.
Now, as the Southern Division prepares to wrap up the regular season
with the running of the Miller Lite 250 presented by Tucson at Hickory
Motor Speedway, Huffman will be able to give the local fans added reason
to cheer their favorite son as he performs a victory race.
Huffman is virtually a lock to pick up the Southern Division regular
season title at his old stomping grounds. The title would be his first
in the Hooters ProCup Series and his first title since winning the Late
Model Stock title at HMS in 1999.
Huffman has already surpassed his career total in wins during his stellar
2003 campaign and will be in prime position heading into the Four Champions
Championship Challenge.
For taking the Southern Division title, Huffman and the Northern Division
winner will take the top seeds and a 40-point advantage over the second
place finishers into the championship series, which could be key if Huffman
should experience any bad luck during the five championship races.
While Huffman is perched for a joy ride at Hickory, other competitors
won’t be as comfortable. Drivers failing to reach the top-30 in
points after the Miller Lite 250 will not receive invitations to the Championship
Series.
The difference between finishing first and 32nd at Hickory will be 72
points, making it a do-or-die race for drivers outside the top-25.
Gates at the Hickory Motor Speedway will open for the fans at 4:30 pm.
Hooters ProCup qualifying will start at 5:30 pm and a autograph session
with the drivers will take place at 6:45 pm. The green flag for the Miller
Lite 250 will drop at 8:00 pm. For more information and advanced tickets,
please contact Debbie Whitworth or Sherry Clifton at 828-464-3655.
