NBC sells out Super Bowl ads for record $206M

TAMPA, Fla. (AP )— NBC said on the eve of Sunday’s Super Bowl that it has sold the last two of the 69 advertising spots for the game, pushing total ad revenue for the event to a record $206 million.

The network said its total of $261 million in ad revenue for all of Super Bowl day also is a record, calling it an especially impressive feat in the middle of the economy’s steep downturn.

The Super Bowl is the premier advertising event with an U.S. audience of 100 million viewers, many of whom watch closely during game breaks for the debut of entertaining, big-budget commercials. The ads have sold for between $2.4 million and $3 million per 30-second slot this year.

“These advertising milestones show the power of the NFL brand and the strength of the Super Bowl as a TV property in this economic climate,” said Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal, a unit of General Electric Co. “The Super Bowl has become one of our country’s biggest holidays, a uniquely American day, and advertisers recognized the value in being a part of it.”

Thirty-two advertisers in all will showcase their products during Super Bowl coverage.

NBC said the ads featured during the game also will be available for viewing almost immediately after they air at Web sites including www.NBC.com, www.Hulu.com and www.Superbowl.com

Some of my buddies, we've talked about the Super Bowl and how even though we're huge sports fans ... there's no way any of us could afford to attend a Super Bowl game. Not just me and my buddies, but really no working-class person can afford to attend an event like the Super Bowl.

I've read online that prices of tickets to this year's Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla., range in price from $1,500 - $1,200 - $1,000 - $750 - $500. And as of Friday, the game isn't an official sellout. Some of the $500 and $750 price tickets remained. I'm sure those are in the upper levels of Raymond James Stadium. The piece I was reading said overall interest in this year's Super Bowl isn't anywhere near what past games have attracted. I'm sure that has to do with the perceived notion by many that the Arizona Cardinals are just a lucky team to have advanced to the Super Bowl, and the Pittsburgh Steelers will easily beat the Cards.

Who will win the Super Bowl?

I like the Pittsburgh Steelers (though they're not my favorite team in the NFL) and it will be OK if they win. But I'm also a huge fan of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner. He's one fine individual. I like seeing good things happen for good people. The Cardinals are the decided underdog, and I'd kind of like seeing Warner lead the Cardinals to the franchise's first Super Bowl victory.

If the Cardinals offensive line can give Warner time to drop back in the pocket and look for Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston, then the Cards have a good shot of winning. If Warner gets a lot of defensive pressure from the Steelers' front-line and has to scramble around back in the pocket, then the Cardinals are in trouble. Because Warner doesn't have good scrambling ability. But give him time to look for open receivers, then he can pick the Steelers defensive secondary apart. Fitzgerald is quite arguably the top receiver in the NFL. If the Cardinals can also establish a ground game with Edgerrin James carrying the ball, that will only help open the passing game up for the Cards.

Arizona Cardinals - 30
Pittsburgh Steelers - 20

That was a funny one, "ST1." I cracked up and almost spit party mix everywhere. HA HA HA HA ... Speaking of party mix, geeeeeeeeeeeeeee ... I've eaten about my weight of that stuff today. I love it!!! Once you start eating it, you can't stop.

Guys, I'm with you on the Super Bowl. That was a very good game.

I had already written the Cardinals' chances of winning off following the interception return for touchdown there at halftime. I couldn't believe the turn of events there. Here at worse the Cardinals would kick a field goal and be tied, or with a touchdown they'd be four points ahead. But what happens? James Harrison intercepts the ball and rumbles, bumbles, and stumbles for a Super Bowl-record 100 yard touchdown return. U-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the second half the Cardinals offense finally came to life. I was on the phone with a buddy of mine when Kurt Warner led the Cards to the go-ahead score. We both said, "Pittsburgh still has plenty of time to at least get in field goal range to at least tie the game to force overtime. And with Ben Roethlisberge at the helm, he could lead 'em down the field for a touchdown."

What's so unreal about Roethlisberger is he's so elusive. He's not quick, he's just very elusive when forced to scramble. It looks like the opposing team's defense is getting ready to sack him, but yet he manages to elude the defenders and throw the ball to avoid taking a sack. All credit goes to Big Ben.

The play where he threw to Santonio Holmes that took the Steelers down inside the 10-yard-line never should've happened. The Cardinals should have tackled Holmes back right about where he caught the ball. But they didn't, that's the bottom line.

I have no problems with the Steelers winning. I just kind of wanted to see the Cardinals win the franchise's first Super Bowl game.

Kudos to both teams for playing an exciting game.

Further proof that Tom Brady fumbled the football against the Raiders on January 19, 2002. Either that or the Cardinals still have the ball with 0:08 left on the clock. The NFL can decide.

Inconsistency rules sports today.

Way different Van. The ball was knocked out before Kurt threw it. He didn't have possession when his arm was going forward so it's a fumble.

Brady had posession of the ball all the way down to his waist before he dropped it, giving us the dreaded "Tuck Rule".

It's a bad rule.

Lawd I wish the Cardinals had pulled it out. 2nd time Warner has been beaten like that, GRRRRRR. He's such a good dude.

Hey "ST1," the NFL Pro Bowl was almost blacked-out.

NFL lifts TV blackout for Pro Bowl

HONOLULU (AP) — The NFL has lifted the local TV blackout for Sunday’s Pro Bowl, with the all-star game close to being sold out for the 30th straight year.

The league had granted two extensions before lifting the blackout for Hawaii. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy says only a few hundred tickets remained as of Saturday.

The Pro Bowl has sold out, usually weeks in advance, every year since moving to the 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium in 1980. It will be televised on NBC.

There has been only one blackout in the history of the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. The 1982 game, which was the year of the players’ support, was blacked out locally, although it was sold out by kickoff.
