I only met the man once and he tried to flamboozle me. Not a good first impression. Did anyone from LPR ever file suit against him?

Some did... and from what I was told, some of those bad check and fraud cases got paid off in one way or another by his "benefactors" with charges then being dismissed. Many victims (including myself) were just left hanging by the system. It absolutely amazed me during that disasterous LPR season of 2007, just how many of the LPR competitors actually supported the guy even after he gave them bad checks, lied to them about having liability insurance, had been arrested and hauled away from the facility on two race days, etc., etc. etc. I even received phone calls and e-mails from some LPR representatives and competitors during 2007, in which I was asked to please not make waves by taking any action against the guy because he "might shut down the track and we won't have a place to race"...... I never could figure that logic, and I lost a couple of customers and a friend or two over my efforts to collect from the guy.
The guy owed me for two billboards which I did for him. Knowing his reputation, I did them on a C.O.D. basis, and he promised to be there when I delivered them. Of course he was not there on the Thursday I delivered them even though he had said he would be. Supposedly the event sponsored by those two entities was that weekend. I wouldn't hurt the sponsors by refusing to have their billboards up, so the billboards were installed. I was never paid. I was laughed at. The guy even had the gall to request more billboards from me, which I never did. I did later explain to both of the sponsors, whose billboards I did complete, just what had happened and what I did to assure that they at least had their billboards up..... and guess what? Neither of them even said "Thank you" or "I'm sorry". (One of those things which one files away for future reference....)
When racers would mention their worthless purse checks to me, usually using that excuse for the reason they couldn't pay me for their graphics, I would tell them that they should seek legal action. The response? Practically every racer who mentioned getting bad checks and telling me that they couldn't pay me becasue of it, would then say something along the lines of, "Oh NO! And don't you push trying to get your money either. If you do he might just quit and close the track down! He let's us use the bad checks to pay for our pit passes the next week".
I never could figure the logic in that line of thinking.... and like I said, I lost a couple of graphics customers and a couple of friends over that BS. What those people failed to understand was the basic fact that they were afraid of losing a place to play race driver, while I was trying to make an honest living.
Maybe this time the charges will stick.... but, I will believe it when I read about a sentencing. Hilarious thing is that one of the dealerships mentioned in that latest news story also sold this man a couple of trucks in 2007 best I remember, with the same situation and same results. I would about guarantee that if most of us went to a dealership and wrote a check for a vehicle, the dealership would make an effort to assure that the check was at least drawn on an existing account before the vehicle left the lot...... especially the second time around.

Yes Lynn Im glad he is getting his dues... about time. The Scott County and Wise County Sherrifs office has numerous warrants for him and Kallie . so when Washington County gets through with him .I am sure he will face those charges in Virginia so maybe he will be put away for a long time , who knows? Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!!! lol

Lynn, I hate to echo exactly what you stated about the mindset of many local racers of "don't rock the boat", but it's true. In fact, that made my decision to pack up and move to Statesville, NC a heckuva lot easier.
Once you get railroaded, you learn who your true friends are. I'm not sticking around in an area that supports crooks and criminals by failing to take positive action. While it is true that speaking up may have resulted in the track shutting down, I have always felt that having moral fiber is more important.
My schedule will determine if, and when, I might return to Lonesome Pine again. To be honest, I hope that I am far too busy to come back in 2010, mainly because that would mean that 'business is good'. HAHA!

Maybe we could all get together and send Mr. Vance one of those over-sized Christmas cards.

Appears that after the Johnson City Press made such a "headline story" out of the arrest, they just completely dropped the ball on any follow-up. No further news.
I hope that this isn't going to end up being just another of those incidents, in the long line of such incidents, which just seem to quietly go away until another similar headline turns up again telling of yet another "lengthy investigation" which led to an yet another arrest and publication of an updated mug shot. There seem to have been some several of these "lengthy investigations" and arrests over the past several years.

I wonder what would happen if I started writing hundreds of thousands of dollars in bad checks and didn't pay my bills? I wonder if I would get the same 'star' front-page treatment, without all of the actually repercussions?
