Lane Kiffin has departed Ol Rocky Top to become head coach at USC. Wonder who will coach UT next?

I saw it coming as soon as Pete Carroll announced that he'd be headed to the Seattle Seahawks. Lane Kiffin spent several seasons at USC and would be a much better fit there than in the SEC.

Well then congratulations Shawn. You are the only one in the nation that actually saw it coming.

The Knoxille local news media was livid last night. As a requirement, Kiffin wouldn't not let them in while making his announcement...national media only...that set off a shouting match, which in turn set the kids off, who then surrounded the complex Kiffin made the announcement from. It was complete chaos bordering on a riot as police has to barricade Johnny Majors Blvd off.

Everyone is talking about Texas coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp being the leading candidate...I can't buy into that...when current Texas HC Mack Brown leaves, where do you think Muschamp will bolt to?

To me they have a few legit choices:

  • open up the bank for John Gruden
  • Hire integrity with quality, a la UCONN HC Randy Edsell or TCU's Gary Patterson
  • Bring Fulmer back under a short term deal for the quick fix.
  • Fire AD Hamilton, insert Fulmer, then bring Cutcliffe back from Duke.

BTW, many players walked out of Kiffin's departure meeting with them. I really feel for them.

I also seen that 2 of UT's big recruits have decided to play somewhere else cause of this decision. I also heard that Muschamp was the leading candiate but I agree with you Bugman that Muschamp is in line to take over Texas so makes no sense for him to leave Texas unless if he wants a head coaching job now since Mack Brown dont know when he will retire.

Some names to watch for might be John Gruden, former Marshall head coach Mark Snyder, and Mark Mangino did a good job at Kansas is looking for a job. These are just names I throwed out off top of my head but what about the old vetern Bobby Bowden?

Shawn, Lane was USC's fourth or fifth choice so if you saw this coming will you go with me this week to buy lottery tickets? Seriously, no one down here saw this coming. Lane takes daddy and Orgeron with him, these three must be some type of coaching mafia or something but if it doesn't work out at USC for Lane then he's made a huge mistake by going there. It was a knee jerk reaction for USC, plain and simple, their recruits were jumping ship quickly once Carroll announced his leaving.

As for repalcements my first choice is Gruden, he was a graduate assistant here and married a Jefferson County girl but I don't know if he wants to coach college or not. Second choice, dangle the moon in front of Saban and see if he bites. Why not try it? Cutcliffe would be a good choice too, if you can win at Duke in football you can win just about anywhere.

Oh well, is it racing season yet?

Where else was Lane Kiffin wanting to go except for USC? Some of USC's higher choices were definitely not going to make the move for whatever reason. I had thought that Kiffin would have stayed an extra year at UT before heading out west, but it was Carroll's decision that surprised me. I had thought that he'd wait one more year at USC, so he jumped the gun on me.

Robbie, here is how I play the lottery, so please be advised:

Step 1: Go to Chinese restaurant
Step 2: Eat fortune cookie
Step 3: Use fortune to pick lotto numbers

Sometimes I'll get a random number that is too high for me to pick, then I'm screwed. You know that it's work for someone at least once. They might not have won the jackpot, but they got something. HAHA!

Haha, thanks for the lottery advice Shawn, I'll let you know how it works out! As for Kiffin, I never blame a guy for taking a "dream job" but it still just feels like a kick in the gut. But, it's worse for incoming commitments than it is for me.

To be honest, I was confused as to why UT's Athletic Director hired him in the first place. I had the same reaction when Al Davis of Raiders' lore brought him to the NFL. While it is true that the USC Trojans had a very strong offense while he was the Offensive Coordinator, it is my understand that Kiffin never called the plays for the offense during his tenure.

However, when You throw in the package deal that comes with Lane, a few things start to open up. Lane is someone that can bring good help with him. Time will tell how this thing sorts out, but at the moment, Tennessee seems to be in a bit of turmoil with a few of their top recruits de-committing.

In this topic http://www.racerslounge.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=16010&PN=1 on RacersLounge.com I said:

I'm still not a Lane Kiffin fan. I'm a Tennessee Vols fan!!! I think Lane is arrogant and cocky acting, and those are personality traits I just don't care for. I know this sounds crazy, but I pull for the Vols ... not Lane Kiffin. I realize if the Vols do well, Lane's doing well. I was on the phone with a good friend of mine at the end of the game, and we both commented about how Kiffin just kind of "high-hatted" Tech coach Frank Beamer and blew-him-off at midfield. Kiffin basically didn't even acknowledge Beamer. I thought that showed a lack of class on Kiffin's part. All you need to do is listen to Kiffin talk in interviews and he comes across as a smart-aleck.

Ask any of my buddies and they will tell you that from Day 1 at the press conference introducing Lane Kiffin as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, I said "He's arrogant, cocky and a smart-aleck!"

Look at all the occasions where Lane stuck his foot in his mouth with public comments he'd make. He'd go on with, "At least we're getting the Tennessee Volunteers name in the national spotlight." That's a bunch of BS!!! He just was showing what a smart-azz jerk he was.

I say GOOD RIDDANCE TO LANE KIFFIN, and don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing about Lane Kiffin I liked was his wife is "eye-candy" to look at. But whoa, just lookin' at her you know she's high-maintenance. HA HA HA

My buddy Jimmy Adams, last night we were talking and he said he remembered me saying that at most, Lane Kiffin would be in Knoxville for four years (one recruiting class) when he was named coach of the Vols. Knoxville, Tennessee and the University of Tennessee Volunteers football program didn't mean nutthin' to Lane. Look before Lane and you had Phillip Fulmer, Johnny Majors and Bill Battle. They all bled Big Orange!!! They were loyal to the program. Lane Kiffin doesn't know the meaning of the word "LOYAL!"

Now I can understand and see where the USC position was attractive to Lane, being he was an assistant there. Plus he played quarterback in college at Fresno State, and he was briefly coach of the Oakland Raiders. Hmmmmmmmm, maybe Al Davis isn't senile as some people say. Davis said Lane was a LIAR, when he let him go as Raiders coach.

Anyway, no tears shed by me over Lane Kiffin leaving Rocky Top. With this being a crucial time for college football programs with recruiting taking place, the Vols are in kind of a tough situation with no head coach. And what about that fat-azz Ed Orgeron trying to persuade Vol recruits to not attend today's first new semester classes at Tennessee. He was trying to persuade the recruits to follow Lane, Monte and him to USC.

The University of Tennessee Volunteers football program will be just fine without Lane Kiffin and his chosen gang in Knoxville. The school needs to search quickly for a new coach.

As "BugMan" said, Jon Gruden would probably make a good coach for the Vols. But I believe Gruden is really satisifed with his TV job. He's still around the game, but he doesn't have the long hours involved as when he coached. Plus I'm sure he's being compensated quite well for the TV gig.

Will Muschamp would be a good coach, but we'll have to see if he can be persuaded to leave Texas, where he is coach-in-waiting to replace Mack Brown. But with Brown signing his contract extension, maybe Muschamp might be ready to move on to another program.

David Cutcliffe is a good coach. He did a really good job this past season at Duke, plus I think he did well coaching Mississippi.

I think a good coaching prospect would be the son of legendary Lou Holtz ... current coach at East Carolina, Skip Holtz.

My Blood Runneth Big Orange ... GO VOLS!!!

Exactly, he wasn't USC's first choice. You had Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, Oregon State coach Mike Riley ... all ahead of Lane Kiffin.

Rumors surrounding Pete Carroll leaving USC focused on possible NCAA sanctions, some dating back to Reggie Bush when he played for the Trojans. And just recently you had allegations regarding Joe McKnight and others. Wouldn't it be interesting to see Lane Kiffin inherit a USC program that gets put on probation?

Tennessee AD hopes to move quickly on new coach

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Disappointed Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton doesn’t have anytime to waste replacing Lane Kiffin, whose abrupt resignation has left the Volunteers scrambling.

The AD said he’d like to have someone in place before Sunday, when coaches are allowed to begin live recruiting again.

Interim head coach Kippy Brown, tasked with holding together the program’s recruiting class, would prefer to have someone in place even sooner than that.

“This is an absolutely critical time for our program as it relates to wrapping up the recruiting and signing date time, so we will work very diligently toward trying to bring closure to this process,” Hamilton said Wednesday.

The Volunteers are trying to hold together a recruiting class ranked as one of the best in the country.

Brown is proceeding with plans made by Kiffin to host prospects on campus this weekend and would like to see the new head coach in place by Friday or Saturday to speak with those prospects.

Hamilton said he would be a day late on the decision if it meant hiring the right coach. Hamilton took a month before hiring Kiffin, though when asked to describe Kiffin’s tenure as coach, he had one word: “Brief.”

The athletic director began his search Tuesday afternoon after officially learning Kiffin would be leaving and continued his search after meeting with the program’s eight mid-term enrollees and media Wednesday morning.

Though he’s never commented publicly on the other candidates he interviewed to replace Phillip Fulmer in November 2008, Hamilton said few if any were still available for the job now.

One potential candidate Hamilton is possibly focusing on is Texas defensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp, a former assistant at LSU and Auburn, and a Georgia graduate.

Tennessee associate athletic director of football operations David Blackburn said he had no knowledge of Muschamp traveling to Tennessee for an interview.

Other coaches Hamilton may consider include Duke coach and former Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe and East Carolina coach Skip Holtz.

TCU coach Gary Patterson told the AP on Wednesday night that neither he nor his agent had been contacted by Tennessee.

Agent Jimmy Sexton, who represents Kiffin, Muschamp and many other college football coaches, declined comment to The Associated Press.

Brown said he’s been told he’s a candidate for the job too. One person Hamilton is not pursuing is Fulmer, the coach he fired in the middle of the 2008 season.

Asked if he felt betrayed, Hamilton said he gave Kiffin a chance to be a head coach but that he was “more disappointed for the kids and fans.”

The athletic director said Kiffin told him Saturday that if the Southern California job came open he would be interested.

Hamilton met with the eight recruits who enrolled early and told them to “go to class.” He said that though he didn’t have an attendance sheet with him, since the recruits were on campus at 12:01 a.m. that means they are enrolled at Tennessee.

According to Tennessee, the eight he met with were Channing Fugate, offensive lineman Juan James, defensive end Corey Miller, defensive end Jacques Smith, quarterback Tyler Bray, wide receiver Ted Meline, wide receiver Matthew Milton and quarterback Matt Simms.

Two players expected to enroll and didn’t were wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins and defensive lineman Brandon Willis. Rivals.com, which ranked Tennessee’s recruiting class sixth before Kiffin’s departure, reported Willis would enroll at North Carolina.

The athletic director was quizzed about how much Kiffin strayed from Tennessee traditions and about the departing coaches contacting Vol recruits, trying to lure them to Southern California.

“Nothing surprises me anymore,” Hamilton said about the calls to recruits.

Kiffin hired Brown last month, and he said he had heard through the coaching grapevine that Kiffin might not be around long. But this is Brown’s third stint coaching at Tennessee.

“There’s been a lot of gloom and doom around here, and I don’t buy into that. … This is still Tennessee. It was Tennessee before I got here. It’s Tennessee now, and it will be Tennessee long after I’m gone,” Brown said.

“And that’s special.”

Am I really the only one that saw this coming? Anyone who thought that Lane Kiffin was in Knoxville to stay is crazy! I was more shocked at Kiffin's hiring at UT as I was to his leaving and subsequent hiring at USC.

Think about it for a minute. I may be starting up a local LMSC team and want Tony Raines, Jason Keller, or Todd Bodine to drive for my team, but that doesn't mean that they want to come drive for me!

Fisher and Del Rio are not in bad positions as they stand. Also, when You take into account that Del Rio vehemently denies behind offered anything by USC, things start to break down a bit. Also, it appears that Riley was not as money-hungry as USC brass was anticipating.

It should be noted that Lane Kiffin stood by his word. If a position opened up at USC, he'd be taking it. He wasn't lying.

No one that I know has ever said they expected Kiffin to retire here, and most of us realized that the USC job would be hard to pass up if offered to him. However, due to the speed of it (starting with Carroll leaving) no one had time to really grasp it, i.e. it caught us off guard. I think that's what people mean when they say they didn't see it coming. Now, that being said, local sports radio host Tony Basilio is reporting on his site that Muscahmp was offered a 7 yr. 21 million dollar deal with no outs for going back to Texas or bolting to Georgia. Obviously, you never can tell if any of this is true or not but that's what is being reported.

I think landing Will Muschamp as coach would be a good deal. You have to kind of believe Muschamp's wanting his turn to be head coach. This deal with Mack Brown signing contract extension, what is it for ... five years? I believe Muschamp's chompin' at the bit to head a team up and call the shots. He's a young and energetic coach.

Muschamp's worn the burnt orange of Texas. So I believe he'd look OK wearing the UT Vols orange. HA HA HA

Heck, how 'bout bringing Randy Sanders back to the Volunteer State as head coach? HA HA HA

I'd still like to see Phillip Fulmer be brought back and first thing he say would be to tell the Haslam family to stick it where the sun doesn't shine. HA HA HA ... That family and all the money they contribute to the UT athletic department is why Fulmer was let go. I wonder what they think now that Lane has bolted Knoxville for the Left Coast?

I've still not purchased any Pilot Travel Center fuel since coach Phillip Fulmer was let go as coach. And I don't ever plan on buying any, either. I also won't be voting for "Sonny-Boy" Haslam as governor!!!

You know, fans' of athletic teams get caught up in the happenings of their favorite team and are quite passionate about sports. But when you look at the magnitude of the devastation in Haiti from the earthquake, playing a sport doesn't even compare.

I feel sorry for the people in Haiti. Seeing video of the destruction on television earlier tonight and this woman on her knees crying/screaming due to the death of her child, it brought tears to my eyes. Living here in the United States, and everything we enjoy in our lives ... we've really got it made compared to a lot of parts of the world.

Retailer plans to donate Kiffin shirts to Haiti

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Knoxville retailer will donate fans’ Lane Kiffin T-shirts to earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti.

HoundDogs, which sells Tennessee apparel, advertised a 20 percent discount for fans who brought shirts to the store for donation.

Manager Mitzi Sherrill says the owners, Dan and Tona Burks, were hoping to turn a “negative into a positive” when they heard fans talk of burning and ripping up shirts with the former Volunteers coach’s name or face on them in the wake of Kiffin’s abrupt resignation. He accepted the head coaching job at Southern California.

Sherrill says the store had already been promised a large donation of shirts from a fan in Maryland.

It's kind of comical that Knoxville was duped on by Kiffin kind of like Fulmer was duped on by the people that forced him out. Karma is a cruel, cruel villain.

I think that the best option would be Muschamp. I am in no way a Vol fan and never have been, but this kind of blows. I bet that there were a lot of kegs at the mattress burning party the other night though.

Thank you RW, and yes, I will become the new coach at the University of Tennessee immediately. My first order of business will be to hire RW and Shawn to handle all my PR crap since I don't have the patience for it....I'm all about the X's and O's.....or is it the ex's and ho's? No, it's the X's and O's.

And I can promise the Vol nation that I will not leave for any other coaching job in the U.S.

RW and Shawn, can you guys start immediately?

Alright, off to the strip to celebrate.....before you go to bed RW can you go ahead and call me a cab? I might need it because tonight I'm celebratin'! Go Vols!!

OMG Bobby! Snyder? He might make Water-Boy and Gatorade refiller, LOL!

I just don't get it with Muschamp. He WILL leave to go back to Texas when Brown leaves.

I would rather Texas hire Muschamp, and send Brown to us!!

Anyway...I can't believe I brought up Fulmer as a replacement. That's almost as goofy as the Snyder rumor Bobby heard about.

My short list in order:

  • Gruden
  • Patterson
  • Edsall
  • Peterson
  • Cutcliffe
  • Leach (He got a raw deal at Tech IMHO)...you haven't heard any other players coming forward.

Sporting News reported that UT contacted Gruden and Gruden said he had no interest....not sure if that's true or not, it's hard to tell who's telling the truth when these things get cranked up by my personal choice would be Gruden as well. If not Gruden then I'd like to have the either the dude from Air Force. Wasn't it two years ago when we barely beat Air Force at home in Fulmer's last year? I think we had to score late to beat them.

Numerous sites are reporting that Troy Calhoun of the Air Force Academy has called a team meeting this afternoon. His name has been linked to the Tennessee job and it has also been reported that he was the first choice last year before Kiffin was hired. Don't know if any of it is true or what it may mean as far as our coaching search goes. We'll see, I guess.

A buddy of mine, he and I were talking today and he was peeed because Will Muschamp turned UT down. But I told him I don't blame Muschamp, even if he does have to be Mack Brown's assistant for five years. He'll be well compensated, plus I believe he really wants the Texas job. I don't believe Muschamp would accept any SEC coaching job unless it was head coach at Georgia.

I don't necessarily believe it's all about coaching at a big school, either. I believe Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and his family like living in Colorado Springs, Colo., and he doesn't want to leave the program he's nurtured along since replacing Fisher DeBerry. And I believe I heard where Air Force also gave Calhoun a pay raise to try and entice him to stay. Current coaches like having interest expressed in their services by other schools, because in turn they use it as bargaining leverage to get a pay increase.

David Cutcliffe? I believe he's a good coach. I think he got a raw deal at Mississippi. Some will say if you've got Cutcliffe as coach, you might as well have Phillip Fulmer. They've both spent countless hours around one another, so you've got to think each has rubbed off on the other a little. Competing in the ACC with Duke, you've got to give it to Cutcliffe that he did a pretty doggone good job in Durham.

Y'all have heard me talk about loyalty, and having connections with the program ... and Cutcliffe served on campus in Knoxville for several years. You know, I'm not so sure it's UT wants Cutcliffe so much for coach as the school right now is just wanting some stability. Here's what I think will happen: Cutcliffe is head coach, and he will groom one of his top assistants to be "coach-in-waiting" like all these other colleges are doing these days.

Hey Robbie, I've got your back. "My Blood Runneth Big Orange!" ... "Tinkfan75's" bloods also runs Big Orange, too. He just doesn't want to admit it publicly here on RacersLounge and let his Virgina Tech buddies see him say that. HA HA HA

Hmmmmmmmmmm, I believe we need to have a RacersLounge.com get-together and hold it in Knoxville at Thompson-Boling Arena. "Tinkfan75" can drive down from Roanoke, Va., to Johnson City at my home and we'll ride down to K-town together and talk about "Good ol' Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennnnnnn-uhhhhhhhhhhh-seeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

Go Vols!!

Hey Robbie, maybe we need to stick with the X's and O's and not ex's and ho's. The latter two sound to me like it could cost $$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HA HA HA

And I know you'd never leave the Vol Nation for another job. GO VOLS!!!

Yes, Shawn and I can start immediately. I can, and I believe Shawn can too. The last I heard 84expo photos wasn't takin' shirt-track photos at Da Pine anymore. Something about philosophical differences, or along those lines. Something about a Cheshire cat. HA HA HA

No need to call a cab, Robbie. Either Shawn or I will chaufeur you around the Strip.

GO VOLS!!!

I trust Robbie to pay us, plus I'd say he'd even let us bring our friends to ballgames and not make us pay to get them in. Who knows, they might even wanna take some photos while at the ballgames and help promote the team. What a great idea, let 'em in free and they'll take photos to help promote the team.

Let's see, you had Lane "I'm Leavin' Knoxville" Kiffin, his old daddy Monte, and then azzhole Ed Orgeron bolt the Volunteer State for Hollywood.

I'll give Monte credit for having more sense than Lane. Monte wasn't about to leave the football complex the other night and enter the angry mod of students. He thought it'd be better to just sleep in his office until daylight. HA HA HA ... And from what I've heard, Monte talked that morning on the Sports Animal and said he didn't have a clue Lane was going to take the USC job. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about Mike Leach, Mark Mangino and Jim Leavitt all become a posse and coach together somewhere? But I don't want none of 'em in Rocky Top!!!

The first rule of running a successful business is to know when You are in an unprofitable market. The images were not selling, but the web traffic was outstanding. I had trackers on each gallery to count how many unique hits were received for each individual image. I had detailed reports of which customers ordered images, as well as which cars appeared to have a high "hits" ratings with no purchases.

As time went along, I was able to deduce who was purchasing and who was just "looking for free". When the nightly profit is less than the cost of entering the pits, it's time to move onto something else. Who wants to pay to go to work?

That being said, it is true that 84EXPO will not be a part of the media relations department at LPR in 2010. I have accepted a client in Statesville, North Carolina that will allow me to relocate and expand the business. Photography was always just a SMALL part of the 84EXPO business, but I had very few takers on my other services.

I also produced all of the 3-D renders that have been posted here on RacersLounge over the course of the past 2-3 years, as well as autograph/hero cards for Jake Crum, Chad Harris, Caleb Roark, Jenna Wagner, and Derek Woodward. I traveled down to Orlando for the PRI Trade Show as a guest of Randy LaJoie's The Joie of Seating, then to the Daytona ARCA test session with Venturini Motorsports a week or so later. Neither of those trips were as a photographer, rather as a Public Relations representative.

Although I will be relocating to Statesville, my business services will still be available to LPR competitors. I like to look at it as expanding my business, while also making it more successful. The only thing that I will be cutting out to LPR competitors will be nightly photography services. Depending upon my schedule, I should be able to work in special photo shoots for items such as autograph/hero cards. I can already guarantee that competitors will not find a higher quality product for a lower price than my offering, regardless of what other websites might claim.

By no means do I wish anything bad to happen Lane Kiffin. There's all kind of stuff all over the Internet regarding how Lane just threw the screws to the UT Vols, and people in Vol Nation aren't happy.

Below I received the following in an e-mail from a racing UT Vol fan I know today.
_______________

Dear Lord: In the last year you have taken my favorite actor Patrick Swayze, my favorite actress Farrah Fawcett, my favorite musician Michael Jackson, my favorite TV pitchman Billy Mays, and my favorite athlete Chris Henry.

I just wanted to let you know my favorite coach is Lane Kiffin.

On the way to work I heard on the radio that the NCAA will announce sanctions against USC to include 2 years no bowl or TV appearences.  This is from an article in the New York Times to set appear on Sunday.

they are in some trouble but just waiting for the final saying from the NCAA. It has alot to do with football violations and violations on the basketball program when OJ Mayo went there. Maybe that is why Carroll got out of town all the sudden

  • Posted January 15, 2010 at 8:55 a.m. , updated January 15, 2010 at 10:16 a.m. CUTCLIFFE STAYING AT DUKE
    David Cutcliffe

Amid reports that he was a candidate for the opening at Tennessee, the two-time Volunteers assistant coach said Friday he would remain with the Blue Devils.

“After much thought and consideration, Karen and I reached the decision that Duke is the place for our family,” Cutcliffe said in a statement issued through the school.

Because of his deep-rooted connections to the Southeastern Conference and the Volunteers’ program, Cutcliffe was considered one of the obvious choices to replace Lane Kiffin, who left abruptly this week for Southern California.

“We have both family members and lifetime friends in the Knoxville community and share a deep respect for the University of Tennessee,” he said. “Our ties to the school and the eastern Tennessee area are obvious. But before Tennessee’s hiring process comes to a conclusion, I know that Duke University is where we want to coach.”

Duke athletic director Kevin White said Cutcliffe told him Friday morning that he “intends to remain the Duke football coach for a long time.”

“Simply put, we could not be happier or more excited about the future of the Blue Devils football program,” White said.

Cutcliffe was on Tennessee’s staff from 1982-1998 and from 2006-07, leaving twice to take head coaching jobs.

He went 44-29 with five bowl appearances in six-plus seasons at Mississippi from 1998-2004. Cutcliffe is 9-15 in two seasons at Duke, which won a combined eight games in the five years before he arrived. The Blue Devils are coming off a 5-7 finish, their best since 1994.

This marks the second time in nearly 15 months that he removed his name from consideration for the Tennessee job. When longtime friend and mentor Phillip Fulmer was forced out in November 2008, Cutcliffe quickly quashed speculation that he would return to Knoxville.

    Phillip Fulmer...

...isn't it pathetic when the one guy that has shown his support for 30-some odd years and will bend over backwards for the program wakes up one morning with an ax in his back...

...and then he STILL wants to try and help, because he is obviously the only person that cares enough about the organization to see it do well, despite all of the hurtful things that were said about him...

...that is the guy that You want in charge...

Multiple media outlets are reporting that La Tech HC Derek Dooley will be the next HC at UT.

Derek Dooley will reportedly be named Tennessee's next head coach even though the Vols still have one interview left to conduct.

Multiple media sources are reporting that the former Louisiana Tech head coach has agreed to replace Lane Kiffin, who left UT for Southern California on Tuesday, and a deal is imminent.

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton is set to interview interim head coach Kippy Brown at 1 p.m.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was the other finalist, according to a source close to the process.

A Louisiana Tech spokesperson declined to confirm or deny the move but said to check back later this afternoon.

Dooley, who has been the coach at Tech for three seasons, canceled end-of-the-seasonmeetings with his players on Wednesday and left Ruston to meet with UT officials on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Gannett News Service. Dooley was also the athletic director of Louisiana Tech since March 2008.

Dooley, 41, is 17-20 at Louisiana Tech with a 12-12 record in the Western Athletic Conference. Tech went 8-5 in 2008 and won the Independence Bowl. Dooley has a law degree from Georgia and a bachelor's degree in government and foreign affairs from Virginia, where he played receiver.

Dooley is the son of legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley. Derek Dooley coached under Nick Saban as recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach from 2000 to February 2003, then was named special teams coach and running backs coach for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Dooley followed Saban to the Miami Dolphins where he was tight ends coach in 2005 before accepting the Louisiana Tech job in 2006.

Dooley came highly recommended by Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, who was thought to be one of UT's first targets. Muschamp, however, decided to stay at Texas. Texas Christian's Gary Patterson and Air Force's Troy Calhoun also issued public statements that they would not be leaving their respective schools. The Vols were in serious talks with former coach David Cutcliffe, but Cutcliffe, now the head coach at Duke, and UT couldn't come together on Cutcliffe's staff at UT.
