Everyday folk discovering colossally valuable collectors' items amid everyday junk has been the lifeblood of antiques shows for years, but it's not every day you see a real-life gold-in-the-attic tale play out on eBay.

Last week, North Carolina eBay user lace_thongs35 thought she was putting up an everyday, 80s-era Nintendo Entertainment System (together with five games) up on the popular auction site. But less than an hour after the first bid, the price was over $6,000 -- and on Wednesday, when the auction closed, the final selling price topped $13,000.

Why? Not the console itself, but one of the games bundled with it -- a deeply obscure 1987 release called Stadium Events, a highly sought-after collectors' item. But it wasn't even the game itself that was worth the bulk of the money -- it was the original cardboard box, which collectors value at a breathtaking $10,000. Fewer than 10 complete copies of the game are thought to exist, and retro gaming aficionados consider it one of the hardest-to-find NES games ever made.

Bet you're wishing you hadn't let Mom throw out your Nintendo collection now, eh?

Dang! I hate to wonder what my Atari 2600 games are worth...

Sadly, the majority of Atari 2600 games are worthless. Although, there are a few rare keepers that could draw in some big bucks from collectors. Check out this article from Racket Boy

From back when I was a boy, I've always been one that wanted to keep the boxes stuff I got came in. And I'm still that way today as a 51-year-old, too.

I've got old board games such as Monoply from back in the '70s, in good shape in the box.

Who on here remembers one of the first versions of video games called Pong? I've got it!!!

Who remembers those shiny aluminum Christmas trees? Back during the '70s my family had one, and I've still got it ... in its original box. The individual tree limbs had paper storage sleeves.

I guess maybe I'm kind of a pack-rat and keep things thinking, hmmmmmmmmm, I might need that one day. HA HA HA ... I've got shelves packed in my basement with stuff I've had for years and years and years.

One of my longtime neighbors, both husband and wife are antique collectors ... really they collect anything they see a value in. I had no clue until a year or so ago about people being interested in old lunchboxes. I've got the very first lunchbox from when I began 1st-grade. It's one of the rounded, metal, Bozo the Clown lunchboxes. Bill (my neighbor) showed me in one of these magazines, lunchboxes. I've also looked online (eBay) and seen my exact lunchbox on there, and it amazes me what they sell for.

Thanks for the video game info - I've got loads of that stuff.  Time to dig in the boxes of stuff that belonged to my boys.

I keep certain things that are from my childhood, my mom's, my grandma's, my kids.  I've been to many shops and seen the prices on some of the stuff they sell and just wandering around e-bay can sometimes be a real eye opener.  My best friend loves e-bay.  He's always wheeling and dealing motorcycle and auto parts.  Plus having old cars, I have a stock pile of stuff for spare parts that I have gathered over the years.   Hard part was remembering which vehicle what part belonged to when I tried to clean up some of my stock pile last year!

Sorry, you wouldn't get much for me. Seems there's no demand for old, worn-out merchandise. HA HA HA
