The words "racecar," "kayak" and "level" are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes).

And "hornet_36_dad," I like that. LOL LOL LOL

Every day somewhere in Africa
A gazelle wakes up
It knows it must run faster
Than the fastest lion around
Lest it be eaten

Every day somewhere in Africa
A lion wakes up
It knows it must run faster
Than the slowest gazelle around
Lest it starve to death

Every day it does not matter
Whether you are a lion or a gazelle
Because you must run faster
Than the chores of life!

People are often unreasonable,
Illogical and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
People may accuse
You of selfish motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,
You will win some false friends
And some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
People may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
Someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
They may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
People will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
And it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you have anyway.

You see, in the final analysis,
It is between you and God;

It never was between you and them anyway.

~Mother Teresa~

Yogi Berra was a better baseball player than he was a speaker,
but he's probably quoted more than Churchill.  Much of what he
said seems silly, until you think about it for a moment...
then you discover a more profound meaning.

Here are a few of the favorite Yogi-isms.  Each is like a
Rorschach test and self-help course rolled up into one.

"You can't think and hit at the same time."

"Nobody goes there; it's too crowded."

"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."

"The only reason I need these gloves is 'cause of my hands."

"We were overwhelming underdogs."

"The other team could make trouble for us if they win."

"It's never happened in World Series history, and it hasn't
happened since."

"We made too many wrong mistakes."

"If people don't come to the ballpark, how are you gonna stop
them?"

"If you ask me a question, I don't know I'm not going to
answer."

"Slump? I ain't in no slump...I just ain't hitting."

"It was hard to have a conversation with anyone, there were too
many people talking."

"Why buy good luggage?  You only use it when you travel."

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

"We're lost, but we're making good time."

"If the world were perfect it wouldn't be."

"If I didn't wake up I'd still be sleeping."

"I usually take a two hour nap from 1 to 4."

"If you can't imitate him, don't copy him."

"It gets late early out here."

"90% of the game is half mental."

"Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't go
to yours."

"Steve McQueen looks good in this movie.  He must have made it
before he died."

"I'm as red as a sheet."

"I wish I had an answer to that because I'm tired of answering
that question."

"Pair up in threes."

"Congratulations.  I knew the record would stand until it was
broken."

"Don't get me right, I'm just asking!"

"Never answer an anonymous letter."

"You can observe a lot by watching."

"It's not too far, it just seems like it is."

"You've got to be careful if you don't know where you're going
'cause you might not get there."

"We have a good time together, even when we're not together."

"Little League baseball is a good thing 'cause it keeps the
parents off the streets and it keeps the kids out of the house!"

"The future ain't what it use to be."

"It ain't over till it's over."

"I really didn't say everything I said."

~Yogi Berra~

I'd say some men on here will agree with the above, but also I'm sure there are some women on here who'll think "Bigamy is having one husband too many. Monogamny is the same."

Oh, well. At least I didn't get edited to "roostery" like "SpeedRacer" did. LOL LOL LOL

I hear that in many places something has happened to Christmas; that it is changing from a time of merriment and carefree gaiety to a holiday which is filled with tedium; that many people dread the day and the obligation to give Christmas presents is a nightmare to weary, bored souls; that the children of enlightened parents no longer believe in Santa Claus; that all in all, the effort to be happy and have pleasure makes many honest hearts grow dark with despair instead of beaming with good will and cheerfulness.

Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!

Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? Today I found out, thanks to the Internet.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.

Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy,
Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish. It will help all of us to be mindful of the scriptures even if we may not be Catholic.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow~
