I believe I've heard of it all now. What have we entered, the George Jetson era?

Or, are these self-parking cars for female drivers? HA HA HA HA

Self-parking cars may get Ford in trouble

The Ford Motor Co. didn’t ask for, nor did it receive, any of the $13.4 billion in emergency federal loans approved by President George W. Bush last month. The money went to GM and Chrysler; Ford said it was doing fine for the moment.

Now we know why: cars that park themselves.

Last week, Ford announced that new self-parking technology would be available on its 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan and its new seven-passenger Lincoln MKT luxury crossover vehicle. The driver presses a button, and presto! Ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear of the vehicle guide an electric power steering system that deftly parallel parks the vehicle.

We are of two minds about this giant leap for mankind. We have fumed in traffic as a driver in front of us spends five minutes backing-and-forthing his way into a parking space, generally leaving the car 3 feet from the curb. A selfparking car might be a boon to the parking challenged.

But isn’t this the kind of hyper-expensive doodad that got the American auto industry in trouble in the first place? Whatever happened to reliable, fuel-friendly vehicles, small enough for people to park without radar guidance? Ford didn’t reveal how much the selfparking option would cost, but it’s a safe bet that for a lot less money, you could hire a guy to teach you to parallel park.

Some Lexus have had that option for 2 or 3 years .

Right you are Tom! Don't understand why this is even news. Lexus has "been there done that".

What I wanna know is what goofy ad agencies are coming up with these moronically stupid commercials? The American Auto industry had better get it in gear because they are failing miserably.

I commend Ford for not taking bail-out money...so much in fact, that I might trade for one next time. I owned a Maverick in the 1970's...that was the last American car I owned with the exception of a 1 year lease on a 2000 Trans Am with Ram Air Package...FastCo used to call it "The Late Model" when I'd drive it over to Kingsport for practice, hehehe!

The latest goofy commercial for GM is that stupid truck commercial where Howie Long gives the Ford F-150 owner grief for those new "step-ladders" on the side and rear...

...and Chrystler...Oh dear are they in trouble or what?! When your entire fleet gets outsold by ONE Toyota model, it's time to tear it down and start all over again.

First off, my comment above about the self-parking cars being geared for female drivers, I wasn't knocking female drivers. I was just raggin' on "WOO-WOO." She's kind of on the injured reserve list these days, so I'd might as well get on her while she's down ... because she will be back ready to pounce in no time.

Hey "BugMan," I agree with you on the TV commercials. First time I saw that Howie Long spot I couldn't believe it.

Also "BugMan," you should've seen my 1974 Ford Maverick. It was chocolate brown, and I had a giant hoodscoop on it and had nice wheels. It was my redneck car, I guess. HA HA HA HA ... But let me tell you, with some work I had done on that car it would really run.
