I've always had an interest in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. In watching it on TV many times, just realizing the danger of racing up the twisting road to the top of the mountain, it just amazes me. Make a little mistake, and off the side of the mountain you'll go ... and it's a long drop to the bottom, too.

One of my good friend's, he and his wife and her sister and husband, a couple of years ago they all went out west in a motorhome on a three-week vacation sightseeing across the country. One of their visits was to Pikes Peak, Colo. He knew my interest in the place, and he called me from atop Pikes Peak ... just laughing and asking me to guess where he was?

I guess for one thing I'd put on my "Bucket List" of things to do before I die, I'd want to take a drive up Pikes Peak.

Pikes Peak drivers aim to break 10-minute barrier

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Three-time champion Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima has been chasing the 10-minute barrier in the Pikes Peak Interntaional Hill Climb for years.

He’ll have plenty of company Sunday for his next assault on the record.

Four-time Swedish rally champion Andreas Eriksson and two-time world rally champion Marcus Gronholm will drive a pair of supercharged Ford Rallycross Fiestas in the Unlimited class along with Tajima, who set the race record of 10:01.408 two years ago.

They will be joined by British rallycross champion Mark Rennison, who will drive a 1999 Ford RS200 in an attempt to break the elusive time barrier in the Race to the Clouds.

“The mountain is not a place for the feint-hearted,” the 59-year-old Tajima said. “It’s a very specialized course, long and very challenging with its own unique characteristics that take years to come to terms with.

“Car setup is also something that is unique to this event, and without previous experience on the mountain, I am sure the newcomers will find this event a huge challenge.”

Twelve defending champions return this year, including Time Attack 2-wheel drive division champion Rhys Millen, who set a record of 12:31.06 last year. Super Stock Car class winner Clint Vasholtz, who has won 15 of the 17 Hill Climbs he has entered, is back to chase the career victory record of 18 held by his father, Leonard.

Paul Dallenbach, a three-time overall race champion who’s won the Open Wheel division five times, will also challenge the 10-minute barrier. He’s driving an 850-horsepower Chevrolet owned by Leonard Arnold of Lyons, Colo.

“We are going for the big win,” said Dallenbach, the younger brother of former NASCAR driver Wally Dallenbach. “We went with Kuhmo Tires this year because they are lighter and are a better pattern for the pavement part of the road, and they should give us the speed we need to get up the hill in under ten.”

A total of 163 drivers in 17 classes will race the 12.42-mile course from mile marker seven on Pikes Peak Highway to the top of the 14,110-foot mountain. Drivers will maneuver their way through 156 turns on paved and gravel roads and climb 4,721 feet during the race.

Weather conditions on the mountain will also play a role in the outcome.

Drivers will compete in the following classes: Unlimited; Open Wheel; Super Stock Car; Pro Trucks; Pikes Peak Open; Time Attack 2-Wheel Drive; Exhibition Car/Truck; Vintage; Motorcycle 1200 cc; Motorcycle 750 cc; Motorcycle Supermoto 450; Motorcycle Quad 500; Motorcycle 450 cc; Motorcycle 250 cc; Motorcycle Quad 450; Motorcycle Vintage; and Motorcycle Sidecar.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the nation’s second-oldest race, behind the Indianapolis 500. It began in 1916 as a promotion by regional icon Spencer Penrose and featuring Barney Oldfield and Eddie Rickenbacker to help promote the new highway to the top of the mountain.

Japanese driver wins 4th straight Pikes Peak climb

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Japan’s Nobuhiro Tajima won his fourth consecutive Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on Sunday, but a loose track kept him from achieving his goal of breaking the 10-minute mark.

Tajima finished with a time of 10:15.368 — a few seconds faster than his winning time from a year ago. But it was well short of the record of 10:01.408 he set in 2007.

A trio of European rally car champions were expected to challenge Tajima and the elusive 10-minute barrier at this years 87th running of the “Race to the Clouds,” the nation’s second-oldest race behind the Indianapolis 500.

Two-time world rally champion Marcus Gronholm had engine trouble and finished second at 11:28.963. He finished the race with the right rear tire of his Ford Rallycross Fiesta in flames.

British rallycross champion Mark Rennison—who couldn’t make a full practice run last week after his 1999 Ford RS200 blew — finished with a time of 12:11.56. Four-time Swedish rally champion Andreas Eriksson ran off the track and was unable to finish the race.

A total of 163 drivers in 17 classes raced the 12.42-mile course from mile marker seven on Pikes Peak Highway to the top of the 14,110-foot mountain. Drivers navigated their way through 156 turns on paved and gravel roads and climbed 4,721 feet during the race.

Rain and lightning caused a 20-minute delay, and gusty winds and slippery gravel on the 12.42-mile course’s unpaved portions forced drivers to drive more carefully, resulting in slower times for the second consecutive year.

Paul Dallenbach, a three-time overall champion at the climb, was another threat to the 10-minute mark, but a slick lower portion of the course kept him from challenging the mark. Dallenbach won the open-wheel class for the sixth time in his career, finishing with a time of 10:52.097.

Despite the challenging weather and course conditions, racers set a trio of class time records this year.

Rhys Millen, the 2007 attack class champion, won the class again this year with a record 12:09.397 time. He set the mark despite shredding both rear tires on his Hyundai Genesis Coupe two thirds of the way through the course and losing fifth gear during his run.

Keith Davidson won the vintage car class with a record 13:56.066 time, while Michael Coburn won the quad 450cc motorcycle class in 12:18.858.

Other classes saw racers add to their already impressive resumes.

Clint Vasholtz won his 14th title, winning the super stock car class in 11:39.662, while Davey Durelle won for the 13th time, taking the motorcycle 750cc class in 11:48.649.

Other class champions were: Stuart Sinclair, motorcycle supermoto, 12:16.652; Aaron Guthrie/John Rodriguez, pro trucks, 14:27.029; David Carapetyan/Adam Kneipp, Pikes Peak open, 11:52.837; Randy Schranz, exhibition car/truck, 12:28.151; Greg Tracy, motorcycle 1205cc, 12:29.120; James Vidmar Jr., motorcycle quad 500, 12:34.598; Joe Prussiano, motorcycle 450cc, 12:32.825; Chuck Lee, motorcycle 250cc, 13:08.534; Eddie Mulder, motorcycle vintage, 13:37.595; and David Hennessy, motorcycle sidecar, 15:57.623.
