The Tennessee Volunteers knocked Kansas from the unbeaten ranks and the No. 1 spot in the poll, then Texas lost after they moved to No. 1. And now, after only one day being ranked No. 1, Kentucky has lost to South Carolina.

What a game, too. I watched from 8-minutes remaining in first half through the end of the game.

Hey "James K" and "Bobby Gobble," (and any other Kentucky basketball fans) I know you both were excited to see your Kentucky Wildcats back on top of the NCAA basketball poll.

I'm tellin' you, the Wildcats are a dang good team. The times I've watched 'em play this season, I've been quite impressed. But tonight against the Gamecocks, playing in Columbia, S.C., before a packed arena ... South Carolina played a good game in front of the home-folks.

I still believe Kentucky is odds-on-favorites to win the SEC, and then I wouldn't be surprised to see 'em "march" right through the bracket in March Madness and win the NCAA championship. It would be a tough road, but the Wildcats just might have the talent assembled to do it.

But in today's world of NCAA basketball, for a team to go all season without losing and win the overall championship, that is quite a task.

I well remember when coach Bobby Knight led the Indiana Hoosiers to an undefeated season. Coach Jerry Tarkanian almost led the Runnin' Rebels to an undefeated season, too.

Maybe the Wildcats go voo-dooed by the Barack Obama jinx!!! HA HA HA

SC’s Downey scores 30 to take down No. 1 Kentucky

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Top-ranked Kentucky found out it’s got some growing up to do. And college basketball will most likely find a new No. 1.

Devan Downey scored 30 points and South Carolina sent Kentucky to its first loss of the season 68-62 on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats (19-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) moved atop the rankings this week for the first time since 2003. They were cautioned by no less a fan than President Barack Obama earlier Tuesday to keep their focus and play with the same passion that brought them to the top.

The president or Kentucky didn’t count on Downey, the SEC’s leading scorer to break the 30-point mark for the fourth time in six league games for South Carolina (12-8, 3-3).

“This is what happens when you have young guys who think we’re are going to win at the last minutes of the game,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said.

It has been Wildcat youngsters such as John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins that have fueled the program’s best start in 44 years. South Carolina showed there’s still a place for a couple of smart, savvy senior guards such as Downey and Brandis Raley-Ross.

Raley-Ross had 17 points, the most he’s scored in an SEC game this season as South Carolina won its third straight over Kentucky.

“Those guys are very talented,” Downey said of the Wildcats. “But they’re also freshmen and this was a hostile environment.”

The president said as much earlier Tuesday when he called to congratulate the Wildcats on raising more than $1 million to help earthquake victims in Haiti, reminding Kentucky that South Carolina was a difficult place to play.

Obama, though, also thought—like most everybody else who follows the game — that the Wildcats would have little trouble with undermanned South Carolina.

“Yeah, I’m aware of it, but I’m kind of scared to mention something about this president,” Downey joked. “I don’t want anybody knocking at my door. I don’t have anything to say about Obama.”

DeMarcus Cousins matched his career best of 27 points to lead Kentucky, which had been the nation’s last unbeaten team.

Fans rushed the Colonial Life Arena floor when the buzzer sounded, Downey hugging whomever he could and screaming, “I told you so!”

Giddy fans came up to South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman, handing him dollar bills to pay the anticipated fine the SEC levies for swarming the court.

First offense is $5,000, escalating to $50,000 for repeated violations.

“I’ll handle this one,” Hyman said.

With Downey, there could be more upsets and celebrations ahead.

He had seemingly hit a game-winner at Florida on Saturday, scoring on a driving layup with 5 seconds left until the Gators’ Chandler Parsons outdid him with a winning 3-pointer.

This time, though, Downey and the Gamecocks would not be stopped—even after the Wildcats fabulous freshmen of Wall and Cousins seemed to take things over.

The pair combined for 13 points during a 14-3 run midway through the second half that put the Wildcats up 47-42. That’s when Downey took over.

South Carolina’s senior had a three-point play and two foul shots to tie it up.

Downey had another three-point play with 4:06 left to give the Gamecocks the lead for good at 54-51.

“It’s been my thinking all year,” South Carolina coach Darrin Horn said. “If it’s close, we’ve got No. 2 (Downey) and we’ve got a shot.”

Wall’s three-point play with 40.1 seconds left brought Kentucky within 62-61. But Raley-Ross followed with two free throws to restore the edge.

Cousins had 12 rebounds to go along with his points, which tied his best performance set earlier this season against Seton Hall.

Cousins said the Wildcats needed to learn from their mistakes in time to reach their ultimate goals.

“I wanted to be undefeated, and No. 1 was all good, but No. 1 is not a championship,” Cousins said. “And we’re playing for a championship.”

Maybe the Wildcats were distracted by their head-in-the-clouds moment earlier Tuesday when President Obama called.

How else to explain this one?

The Wildcats were ragged and out of sync. They were outrebounded 41-35 by the Gamecocks. They missed from close range, Darnell Dodson even missed an all-by-himself layup after a midcourt steal.

Wall, who Obama greeted with “What’s going on all-star?” when they spoke by phone, was 6 of 16 from the field with four of Kentucky’s 15 turnovers.

Wall ended with 19 points.

“What I keep saying,” Calipari repeated, “we may have been undefeated, but we were lucky to be undefeated. I was being truthful.”

No Wildcat could corral Downey.

While the Gamecocks’ senior didn’t have his shooting touch (9 of 29), he went 10 of 11 at the free throw line.

“Lets be honest,” Downey said. “No one gave us a chance.”

They will now, especially with Downey in the lineup.

President thanks No. 1 Wildcats for Haitian relief

By PETE IACOBELLI, AP Sports Writer

COLUMBIA, S.C. – President Barack Obama called Kentucky coach John Calipari to praise the program — and to caution the top-ranked Wildcats.

The country's No. 1 college basketball fan thanked Calipari and his players Tuesday for helping to raise more than $1 million as part of the "Hoops for Haiti" telethon. Then Obama counseled them to keep their focus and not let their new position atop the polls go to their heads.

"There is that tendency once you get to number one to let down a little bit," Obama said.

Maybe the Wildcats should pay attention. Obama, who regularly played pickup games during his run for president, last year picked champion North Carolina to win it all in his NCAA bracket.

Kentucky freshman DeMarcus Cousins told Obama the team looked forward to meeting the president at the White House after the season — a rite of passage for NCAA champions.

"The way you guys are going, that may happen," Obama answered.

Obama enjoyed talking basketball with the undefeated Wildcats (19-0), who play at South Carolina on Tuesday night. But the president was just as complimentary about the team's efforts to help those devastated in Haiti by the catastrophic earthquake earlier this month.

Calipari, past and current players and others answered phones from donors while people bid on items ranging from autographed pictures to dinner at the coach's home with actress — and Wildcat megafan — Ashley Judd. The university says that meal went for $98,100.

With matching funds, the school said the money raised by the Wildcats surpassed $1 million.

"I just want to let you guys know that I am very, very proud of what you guys did," Obama told the team, wearing blue "Hoops for Haiti" T-shirts and crowded around a white phone at the Colonial Life Arena.

"It shows a lot of character and I hope that carries over," the president continued. "Some of you will be going to the NBA. Some of you are going to be doing other things with your lives, but I hope that spirit of doing for others continues."

Other programs have also taken up the call to help Haiti.

Notre Dame said it received more than $250,000 for Haitian relief through men's and women's basketball games last weekend.

Calipari credited his players and Kentucky fans for the successful fundraiser.

"I don't know what to say. It's emotional," he said. "We just spent a day and all you people did it. I just want to thank you. Thank you, Kentucky."

Calipari, who met President Bill Clinton while coaching Massachusetts, and the Wildcats had to compose themselves after the White House operator said she'd put the president on the line.

"Wow, this is something," Calipari said.

Kentucky junior Patrick Patterson thanked Obama for the call, which lasted about five minutes.

"Your leadership has inspired us all," Patterson said.

Then Calipari told Obama freshman sensation John Wall wanted to speak.

"What's going on all-star?" the president said. "I've been watching you."

Wall invited Obama to watch Kentucky play in person and suggested a game of "HORSE."

"I'm not going to play horse with you," Obama replied, "because I don't want to lose."

The president suggested a friendly pickup game. "I'm going to make sure I have you on my team," Obama told Wall.

Wall said he and his teammates were floored the president took time to call.

"I'm still nervous and shocked about knowing the president is one of your fans," the freshman said.

(I'll admit, I enjoy watching the No.1 teams get knocked down. I get a kick out of seeing the underdog win.)

Last week...WVU 68...Marshall 60...The game was much closer than the final. Marshall has since lost to Memphis and UAB by margins less than the 8 pts WVU beat them by.

My point? I know you can't compare scores this time of year but I watched the WVU Marshall game. The Herd is up and coming, probably won't get an NCAA bid, but might get an NIT bid. I don't see WVU making the Final Four this year but I do see them getting to the Sweet 16. I think Marshall's young team will step up and make the tournament next season. Huggie can only take this year's Eers so far. I think they'll have a respectful season, but would be surprised if they made it past the Sweet 16 this season.

I was lucky enough to make the wvu/marshall game and I have to tell you Bugman I was pretty impressed with the fan support Marshall had there. Granted the proximity between Charleston and Huntington surely helped but it seems every other game the crowds coming to see the Herd is getting bigger and bigger i wouldnt be surprised if they sale out a game or two before the end of the season. Coach Jones is doing a whale of a job over there. And as far WVU goes I think we know alot more about them over the next couple weeks. They have some really tough conference games coming up so time will tell I guess.

With the COLD, snowy weather conditions outside, today I watched a lot of college basketball.

I figured Kentucky would play a good game against Vanderbilt, and they did. I also watched some of the West Virginia and Louisville game, and the Mountaineers battled back from, when I tuned in being down 12 points, to beat the Cardinals.

And "BugMan," maybe Marshall will be good next year ... but they didn't play well tonight against Houston. I'd flip by the game at times, and the highest I ever saw the Cougars lead was by 23 points. I believe the final score I saw had the Herd losing by 13.

With Texas losing to Baylor, and then tonight Kansas and K-State playing, if Kansas had lost ... Kentucky would've still probably stayed atop the top 25 poll. But the Jayhawks beat the the Wildcats, so they'll now move to No. 1 on Monday when the new rankings are released.

I just hope the Tennessee Vols rebound from two consecutive losses, to Georgia and Vandy, to beat Florida on Sunday. The game's on CBS at 1 p.m. GO VOLS!!!

One thing I'll say about President Barack Obama is, he's a sports fan. He was at today's Georgetown and Duke game, which the Hoyas easily won.

Hey Robbie Henry, "How 'Bout Them Vols!" getting the win over Florida. I'll admit, the Vols had me worried. It was good seeing Scotty Hopson drain the game-winning 3-pointer.

And "dirttracker63," I know you have to be excited over Virginia going to Chapel Hill and beating the North Carolina Tar Heels. Even though it's a down year for the Tar Heels, still to beat them on their home court is special.

I watched the last five minutes of first half and then the remainder of the game. Wow, what a run by Virginia right after halftime when they went on the 18-0 scoring onslaught to basically put the game out of reach. To say the least, it was a stunned crowd at the Dean Dome.

Actually, it was a game-winning 2-pointer, which is what worried the life out of me when I realized he had launched the game-winner from the women's 3pt line, only putting us up by 1 pt. I didn't realize it until right about the time Tyus missed the little bank shot and Hopson rebounded and was headed the other way...I was "puckered up" when I realized we were just up 1, lol.

Definitely a great win for the U of T!!!!!

Yep I was really proud of the Cavs to beat UNC on their home court.  I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they don't lose many more conference games and that they finish well enough to get in the tourney.

Yeppp-eee, I was wrong when saying Hopson hit the 3-pointer. Duh, I was watchin' the shot and after seeing two points credited following a replay, I thought "Why weren't you behind the other 3-point line?"

Really, I can see where having the two different 3-point lines on the court could be confusing for players ... both men and women.

I just hope the Vols can beat LSU. GO VOLS!!!

With game pressure it would definitely get confusing. It's not like the college vs pro 3-line which is several feet of difference. The 3-line for college women vs men is reaaaaaally close...I bet the womens' game changes that before too long.

You're right "BugMan," the 3-point line for men and women in college is very close. And I'm sure during a game the players' aren't exactly looking down at the floor to see which line they're behind.

Heck, I think the NCAA should have the men and women's 3-point line the same distance. The women already have an advantage of using a smaller (circumference) basketball than the men do, that they're shooting in the same size rim the men shoot in, yet the ball men use is larger than what women use. The smaller object has a better chance of going through the hoop. Before some might get all worked up over what I said, it's not a huge size difference. But nonetheless the women's ball is a little smaller in circumference.

Man, the Vols just about blew it tonight at LSU ... after leading by 12 points with five minutes remaining. A road win's tough to come by no matter the opposing team's record, and the Vols I'm sure were just glad to "leave Baton Rouge" with the W.

And how about the Virginia Tech Hokies, they put another L in the loss column tonight for the North Carolina Tar Heels, with the victory in Blacksburg.

I'm with you "BugMan," J.P. Prince has just gotta stop fouling guys when they're shooting 3-pointers. He did that in two consecutive games. Hey, don't be throwin' stuff at your television. HA HA HA

The Vols really played well Saturday night in beating South Carolina. This coming week, with Vandy and Kentucky on the schedule, that's two tough games for the Vols. Looking at it realistically, a split would be good. But with the games being on the road, the Vols easily could lose both. Vandy's already beaten the Vols this season, at home in Knoxville.

Today I flipped channels watching different things, but I watched a good bit of the Maryland and North Carolina game. Man, the Terps laid it on the Tar Heels 92-71. With North Carolina's record now 13-10, and more games remaining, the Tar Heels in all likelihood will have to win the ACC tournament to make it to the Big Dance.

I'd meant to post regarding the idiot West Virginia students since the game the other night against Pittsburgh. It's pretty bad when Coach Huggins has to take the PA microphone over and get on the students for their behavior. I saw the highlights on ESPN SportsCenter, and Huggins was POed at the students. Huggins had his arm around Coach Herrion's shoulders, apologizing for the incident that happened. Herrion easily could have lost an eye.

Boy-eeeeeee, the students' behavior really makes the university look good. When you hear the students cursing when games are televised, that's awful.

But it's just not the students' behavior at basketball games, they've been know to throw objects out of the stands during football games, too. Students at all schools are known to get a lil' rowdy, but the WVU students take it to a different level ... a level showing they have "no class."

I know at one time the WVU students held the recognition as being the university that parties more than any other school. Now that's sure a proud title to hold ... NOTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

West Virginia president apologizes for rude fans

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University president Jim Clements apologized Thursday to the University of Pittsburgh, saying he was “appalled and embarrassed” by fans who threw objects onto the court during Wednesday night’s basketball game.

Pittsburgh assistant coach Tom Herrion was hit under his right eye with what appeared to be a coin.

Clements joined Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins in denouncing the behavior.

Clements said the university plans to increase surveillance and security during future games and vowed to prosecute violators “to the fullest extent permitted by law.”

He also encouraged fans who observe dangerous or inappropriate behavior to text AID to 94597.

“It is a shame that a terrific performance by our team was overshadowed by the unfortunate actions of a few fans,” Clements said.

No. 6 West Virginia beat the 22nd-ranked Panthers 70-51.

Unruly fans have become an embarrassment for WVU of late.

Last month, the profanity flying out of the West Virginia student section was so loud it could be heard on national television, prompting a university official to warn students to tone down their language at basketball games.

Then during a game against the Louisville, students chanted the name of a woman that Cardinals coach Rick Pitino admitted having sex with outside his marriage.

Clements said WVU administrators are working with student government officials to put procedures in place to remedy inappropriate fan behavior.

“Boorish and unruly behavior by our fans will not be tolerated,” he said.

The moment WVU fans started hollering sickening things at Marshall fans in Morgantown was the day I stopped rooting for both Marshall and WVU.

What were they yelling that was so bad? "AT LEAST WE DON'T HAVE TO RELEASE A MOVIE ABOUT OUR FOOTBALL TEAM GETTING KILLED TO GET OUR PROGRAM NOTICED"!

That was the "G" version of one of several ways they used the worst sports tragedy in history to get under our skin. One of the worst? "HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR FOOTBALL TEAM? WELL OR MEDIUM WELL?"

I doubt Va Tech fans are that rude. As a matter of fact, I've been to several games at Lane Stadium. I've worn Green Marshall attire and I've worn a University of Miami Fla jersey. I got hollered at pretty good when I had on the "Canes" jersey, but nothing even close to what I received at Morgantown a few years back.

Could it be the Va Tech fans are so rude to WVU fans because of they way they were treated when they played in Morgantown? I'm telling you under no uncertain terms that I have never ever heard anything close to some of the things the WVU fans have yelled at Marshall fans. I have been to many big time college football games. I've been to Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Boone, NC (and those fans are crazy), Knoxville, and Columbus, Ohio to name a few. There is absolutely no comparison to the way Marshall fans get treated in Morgantown.

Now you know why I feel the way I do towards West Virginia University OldFordBoy. All of those years I rooted for both...there is no way I could even try to now because there's no way to forgive and forget something like that, particularly when as a young boy, 7 of my friends lost one or both parents in that tragedy.

That's absolutely horrible to chant something like that on the part of West Virginia fans. Kinda reminds me of a high school basketball game I went to where the town had just had an ash spill at their TVA plant and their opposing fans, their words, NOT mine, called them a bunch of "ash-holes". There is NO need in stuff like that.

Wow, that really is about as low-as-you-can-go ... the WVU fans bringing up the terrible tragedy suffered by the Marshall family in the plane crash.

Sports is sports, but one should never make negative comments when another school has suffered a tragedy with loss of life.

WVU is esperiencing the greatest times in history of the men's basketball program, but I can guarantee you that ESPN will think before televising a WVU home game in the future ... if the school can't get the students under control. Having enthusiasm is great, but do it with class. Don't get to yelling (cussing) so loud it's easily picked up on the TV broadcast. It just doesn't reflect well on the school, and moreso the idiot students.
