As most citizens of Southwest Virginia are aware, Appalachian Power Company (AEP) has requested yet another rate increase. The State Corporation Commission is the independent body charged by law with making the decision and ruling on the merits of this increase. I myself am outraged that APCO/AEP would seek yet another rate increase (this time over 17%) at a time when the majority of citizens of Southwest Virginia are struggling financially.

All citizens of Southwest Virginia are encouraged to do two things to help stop this latest increase:

(1) Contact the State Corporation Commission in Richmond and express your concerns over yet another large increase. Written comments on the proposed increase must be submitted by March 3, 2010. All correspondence should be sent to the Clerk of the State Corporation Commission, Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond, VA 23218-2118 and refer to case number PUE-2009-00030. The toll free telephone number for the State Corporation Commission in Richmond is 1-800-552-7945.
Interested persons who desire to do so may submit comments electronically at the SCC's web site, http://www.scc.virginia.gov/case . Click on the PUBLIC COMMENTS/NOTICES link and then the SUBMIT COMMENTS button for case number PUE-2009-00030.

(2) Contact the President of Appalachian Power Company, Dana Waldo, and ask that the he reconsider and withdraw this latest rate increase application. His contact information is P.O. Box 1986 Charleston, WV 25327-1986. His telephone number is 304-348-4125 and his e-mail address is dwaldo@aep.com .

Just announced today!

*****************************

Thousands of Appalachian Power customers in our region will be getting some relief on their power bills soon.

AEP has agreed to suspend the 12.5 percent interim rate increase that went into effect December 12th. For the past month several members of the Southwest Virginia delegation have been meeting with company officials about the increase.

Delegate William Morefield said that the company has also agreed not to propose any additional rate increases.

******************************

Thanks to everyone who voiced your concerns to APCO, the SCC and your representatives in Richmond!

This is exactly why we need more competition in the utilities business...talk about a monopoly...Microsoft and Wal-Mart can't hold a candle to the market share a utility has.

I receive my electric bill each month around the 14th-15th, and the bill I received in mid-January went up $115 from December's bill. I'm wondering what the bill will amount to in a little over a week, because over the past month I've had some home remodeling work performed and workers have been in-and-out of the house several times daily, and the heatpump was working overtime.

But it doesn't matter what the bill costs, as long as I can afford to pay the bill I'm going to be warm. Where I save on my electric bill is during warm months, because I don't keep the house very cool.

More Details On AEP Rate Increase

ehardin@wcyb.com

News Five is learning more today about the AEP interim rate increase we first told you about yesterday.

That rate increase in question only involves customers of AEP in Virginia, not Tennessee.
We spoke with both Delegate Will Morefield's office and AEP and here's what we've learned.
2 bills are before Virginia's general assembly these bills would stop AEP's 12.5 % interim rate increase.

We did some checking, and found one of those was assigned to the subcommittee on energy back on January 29th.
There's been no action on that bill since that date.

However Delegate Morefield's office tells us they expect action within the next 2 weeks on that bill.
The bill will need to pass both chambers of the General Assembly And then go before Governor McDonnell to be signed into law.

All of this has to happen, before residents will see the 12.5 % increase removed from their monthly bills.

AEP also tells us they are not withdrawing their increase proposal that's before the State Corporation Commission...
So for now, it looks like Virginia customers of AEP will have to pay the higher rate.

There's also another bill in the state senate that proposes to stop utilities from putting interim rate increases in place at all.
If you would like to track what's happening on the bill just
click on this link to view updates directly from the General Assembly.

A bill is moving through the Virginia General Assembly that would increase your electric bills well into the future. Tell your state senator to stop rising electric bills. SB344, which will be heard this Monday, would guarantee utility companies a 15% profit on some of their investments.  15% is too high, especially in today's economy.  Once this guarantee is in place, the costs will be passed on to you in higher utility rates.

Contact your state senator right now to let them know that consumers shouldn't be paying the bill to protect corporate profits.

Let your state senator know you oppose a 15% profit guarantee for big utility companies.  Electricity is central to everyone's life. We need to pass legislation that consumers can afford.
