The Justice Department filed a lawsuit in Federal court on Tuesday, arguing that the new Arizona immigration law is unconstitutional and requesting a preliminary injunction to prevent it from going into effect at the end of this month.
"The Federal government is taking an important step to reassert its authority over immigration policy in the U.S.," said Benjamin Johnson, executive director of the American Immigration Council. "It will seek to define and protect the Federal government’s constitutional authority to manage immigration."
However, on the same day the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) released a new report, entitled The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on U.S. Taxpayers, which estimates the costs to American taxpayers to be approximately $113 billion a year.
The study found that this amount translates to an average cost to each household of $1,117 a year. It stressed, however, that this burden is unevenly distributed, with families living in states with high immigration population bearing a particularly heavy cost.
