I received a monthly statement in the mail today from my Internet service provider who has been sending me a monthly statement for the past eight years. This month's statement was a little different. It had a 49-cent "local service" fee added. I immediately started looking over the statement for an explanation of just what sort of "local service" I was being billed for.

Well..... imagine my surprise when I read this...... "If you receive a statement for XXXXXXX Internet service with no other XXXXXXX services on that statement you will be charged $0.49 per month".

So.... exactly what is this $0.49 charge? Is it a penalty for not buying other services from this company? It would certainly appear to be just that. Heck, they raised the monthly rate by 30.2% just a few months ago, and I stayed with them just because they provide a reliable service. This just may be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

I may have a new ISP soon.........   HA HA

I have a bundle with Embarq, Phone, cell phone ,high speed internet and Dish network and when I subscribed to it the price was supposed to always stay the same unless Dish Network increased and last month there was 12.95 added for something to do with 1-800 numbers. I called Embarq and they took it off my bill and I had to call another company to get it removed permanently. I guess if you go ahead and pay they just add anything they want to on to your bill.

If you are still using dialup, I recommend localnet.com

It is the last dialup provider I used, and it was pretty good...and cheap.

I have Embarq too Susie. I switch to them when I moved because I just couldn't see paying the extra for cable when I couldn't tell the difference in speed. I guess if you do alot of gaming or something that requires that little extra speed, then cable might be a better choice, but I just cant tell the difference between the best DSL speed and cable.

Do you like your Dish Network addition on your embarq? I have been seriously thinking about switching to the Turbo version.

there's been different times I have found little 12 or 15 dollar charges on bills for sevices i never requested, they count on you not paying attention, they're all crooked, how about AEP? they put an additional 26 percent on thier bills. The average person can't hardly make it with a 300 dollar power bill, can't do much though they're the only game in town. I know the price of coal has went way up recently though.

Bug Man , I had Comcast cable and also Comcast High Speed Internet before and there is no comparison. I would not go back to Comcast if they gave me a discounted service.  I changed to Embarq with the 24.95 Internet service and I love it,it is so much faster than the service with CCast. also got Dish Network with 200 channels and the picture is so much clearer . The internet part is never supposed to go up only way my bill would go up is if DNetwork has an increase.

I think I'm going to DISH. The poor quality, low number of HD channels and the amount they charge me for my equipment is highway robbery.

I also like the DVR that comes with Dish. I just set programs I want to see and watch them when I have time. I have a plasma TV I bought last year and I thought I had really wasted a lot of money , then after I got Dish it is like looking outside it is so much plainer and also after the first of the year more programs are supposed to be HD.  Wonder if I could make a commercial for Embarq and Dish Network?

I have a couple of credit cards that I use for different purposes. One in particular from CitiBank has had a balance of ZERO for the past 3 months. I only use this card for emergencies. Anyways, on 11/14/08 there was a charge of $3.00 added. On the same day, I was charged a $39 LATE FEE!

I called the company and told them what my files said and they tried to explain to me what the $3.00 charge was for. I explained to them that I had not used the card for 3 months and that during that time it had remained completely paid off. Well, they ended up taking all $42.00 off, but never explained what the $3.00 charge was for in the first place. I told them that it was simply so they could add a $39 Late Fee.
Another short story involves Charter not shutting off the Internet/Cable/Telephone services at my former residence as requested, resulting in a $180.00 bill when it should have been $50.00 instead. After three days of phone calls, I finally drove to Charter's local office and was told to not pay a cent until everything was figured out. What's to figure out? I haven't been living there in well over a month! HAHA!
