Freedom Is Not Free
by Kelly Strong
I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears? How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of TAPS one night, When everything was still I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That TAPS had meant "Amen," When a flag had draped a coffin Of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard At the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington. No, freedom isn't free.

Ways To Observe Memorial Day
Memorial Day reminds us of our duties towards the wounded soldiers and the bereaved families, orphans and widows of the dead soldiers. We should honor the dead by adorning their sacred remains with flowers and garlands and show our gratitude towards them in the following ways:
- Adorning the graves of the soldiers with flags or flowers.
- Visiting cemeteries and memorials.
- Furling the American Flag at half-mast until noon.
- Furling the 'POW/MIA Flag'.
- Keep silence for a minute at 3 p.m., 'National Moment of Remembrance' and listen to Taps being played.
- Take a pledge to aid the disabled veterans, widows, widowers and orphans of the dead and keep it.
- You may support the efforts to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th.
- Offering thanks to the veterans and appreciating the ultimate sacrifices of the soldiers to the bereaved families personally may help too.

A Soldier Died Today
He was getting old and paunchy And his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in And the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies; They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors His tales became a joke; All his buddies listened quietly For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer, For ol' Bob has passed away, And the world's a little poorer For a Soldier died today.
He won't be mourned by many, Just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family, Going quietly on his way; And the world won't note his passing, 'Tho a Soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth, Their bodies lie in state, While thousands note their passing, And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories From the time that they were young, But the passing of a Soldier Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution To the welfare of our land, Some jerk who breaks his promise And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow Who in times of war and strife, Goes off to serve his country And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend And the style in which he lives, Are often disproportionate, To the service that he gives.
While the ordinary Soldier, Who offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal And perhaps a pension, small.
It is not the politicians With their compromise and ploys, Who won for us the freedom That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger, With your enemies at hand, Would you really want some cop-out, With his ever waffling stand?
Or would you want a Soldier His home, his country, his kin, Just a common Soldier, Who would fight until the end.
He was just a common Soldier, And his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us We may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, We find the Soldier's part Is to clean up all the troubles That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor While he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline In the paper that might say: "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,

Future years will never know the seething hell and the black infernal background, the countless minor scenes and interiors of the secession war; and it is best they should not. The real war will never get in the books.

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free,
and I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me
and I'll proudly stand next to him
to defend her still today,
'cuz there ain't no doubt I love this land,
god bless the USA.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

The Wall
written by Tim Murphy
On a drizzly D.C. morning, in the middle of July, My brother brought me downtown to the Mall; Past the watchful eyes of Lincoln, 'neath a weeping summer sky, We crossed the street to the little green and visited The Wall.
I remember I was nervous then, I guess a little scared, 'Cause I wasn't sure how I'd react at all; To see the names of the servicemen who'd been recorded there: Who'd heard the final roll call and assembled at The Wall.
Someone might stoop to leave a rose, a letter, or a poem; A message to a young man loved and lost, To show they still remember those who never made it home: Who built The Wall so long and tall, and paid the bitter cost.
And every name's a father or a husband or a son, Or a daughter or a brother or a cousin to someone; Or a name might be a classmate or a friend you may recall: There's nearly sixty thousand fallen names still waiting at The Wall.
As I watched the lines of people that walked by in slow parade, I read a different story in each face; And I couldn't help but wonder at this pilgrimage we'd made, And what common bond, if any, might have brought us to this place.
There were tourists, and the curious, and some veterans who came, Still others who sought an answer to it all; But the only thing I'm sure of is: we left not quite the same, With our memories alive and well, and waiting at The Wall.

Memorial Day
-by C W Johnson
We walked among the crosses Where our fallen soldiers lay. And listened to the bugle As TAPS began to play. The Chaplin led a prayer We stood with heads bowed low. And I thought of fallen comrades I had known so long ago. They came from every city Across this fertile land. That we might live in freedom. They lie here 'neath the sand. I felt a little guilty My sacrifice was small. I only lost a little time But these men lost their all. Now the services are over For this Memorial Day. To the names upon these crosses I just want to say, Thanks for what you've given No one could ask for more. May you rest with God in heaven From now through evermore.

When I'm Gone
(written by Mrs. Lyman Hancock)
When I come to the end of my journey And I travel my last weary mile, Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned And remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken; Remember some good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache And remember I've had loads of fun.
Forget that I've stumbled and blundered And sometimes fell by the way. Remember I have fought some hard battles And won, ere the close of the day.
Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day, But in summer just gather some flowers And remember the place where I lay,
And come in the shade of evening When the sun paints the sky in the west Stand for a few moments beside me And remember only my best.

Memorial Day
- Theodosia Pickering Garrison -
A handful of old men walking down the village street In worn, brushed uniforms, their gray heads high; A faded flag above them, one drum to lift their feet- Look again, O heart of mine, and see what passes by!
There's a vast crowd swaying, there's a wild band playing, The streets are full of marching men, or tramping cavalry. Alive and young and straight again, they ride to greet a mate again- The gallant souls, the great souls that live eternally!
A handful of old men walking down the highways? Nay, we look on heroes that march among their peers, The great, glad Companions have swung from heaven's byways And come to join their own again across the dusty years.
There are strong hands meeting, there are staunch hearts greeting- A crying of remembered names, of deeds that shall not die. A handful of old men?-Nay, my heart, look well again; The spirit of America today is marching by!

TAPS
~ written by Major General Daniel Butterfield ~
Day is done... Gone the sun From the lake... From the hills... From the sky. All is well... Safely rest God is nigh.
Fading light.... Dims the sight And a star.... Gems the sky.... Gleaming bright From afar.... Drawing nigh Falls the night.

Let’s set aside our partisan ideas and ideologies today and recognize those who have sacrificed for us. Remember too, their families, who gave their loved ones on the altar of freedom.
And don’t forget that we currently have members of our military fighting shooting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, patrolling the seas, standing at attention on the Korean Peninsula, guarding our Southern border and battling an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There are others at bases around the world representing America’s interests.
Regardless of whether you support the wars in those places, the wars fought previously or the policies that require us to have troops stationed around the world, we must leave politics aside this day and remember those who chose to go where their Commander-In-Chief sent them, and who did all they could to see the mission through.
Many Americans receive the day off, and it’s not unusual for them to spend the day at picnics, barbecues, the lake or beach. As you enjoy this holiday, don’t forget the reason behind it.
Remember those who fell on the battlefields at Lexington, Concord and Valley Forge; at Ft. Meigs, Ft. George and Baltimore; at El Paso, Cerra Gordo and Mexico City; at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and the Wilderness; at San Juan Hill, Santiago de Cuba and Silva Heights; at Rheims, the Marne and Argonne; at Pearl Harbor, North Africa, Normandy, Guadalcanal, Ardennes and Midway; at Inchon, Chosin and Seoul; at Saigon, Hue, Hamburger Hill and An Loc; at Kuwait City, and Southern Iraq; at Mazar-e-sharif, southeastern Afghanistan, Qandahar, Marjah and Pashmul; at Nasiriya, Baghdad and Al-Anbar; and all the battlefields in between.
Thank You to those who gave it all. And to all veterans who have served or are currently serving, Thank You and God Bless!
(written by Bob Livingston, Personal Liberty Digest, 05/31/2010)
