Condolences to the family of Fred O. Phillips on his passing early this morning (December 17, 2014). Mr. Phillips was the father of well known racing announcer Freddie Phillips who has at various times over the past 20 plus years been the tower announcer at both Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway, and of racer Clynis Phillips who has raced at Kingsport Speedway, Lonesome Pine Raceway and Volunteer Speedway as well as various tracks in Kentucky. 

 

 

Fred Odell Phillips - February 13, 1944 - December 17, 2014

Fred Odell Phillips, 70, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at his home. Fred loved his family, horses, coon hunting and German Shepherds. He loved Big Stone Gap and all his friends there. Mr. Phillips was a retired coal miner and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in by his parents, John S. and Alpha Phillips; brothers, Creed, Emory, and Joe Phillips; sisters, Frances Stallard, Edna Jenkins, and Eula Stanley.

Survivors include three sons, Freddie B. Phillips and wife Kim, Clynis Phillips and wife Nancy all of Clintwood, Brett Phillips of Big Stone Gap; grandson, Justin Phillips of Clintwood; one brother Darrell Phillips of Clintwood; two sisters, Beuna Vanover, Janice Martin and husband Bobby all of Clintwood; brother-in-law, Clynis Stallard of Huron, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; Laura Dickenson fiancé and caregiver.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Thursday, December 18th, with services conducted by Lynn Vanover, Lester Mullins, Myers Vicars and Bud Kilbourn at 7:00 pm in Valley View Freewill Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held Friday, December 19th, at 11:00 am in the Phillips Family Cemetery, Dante, Virginia. The family will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Sheriff Ronnie Oaks, members of Valley Fire Department and Life Care Ambulance Service.
