KC RACEWAY PRESENTS RENEGADE ‘KC 100 CIRCLEVILLE OIL CHALLENGE’
WAVERLY, OH --- “Every time you get those guys to town it’s
a great time,” stated an enthused Jim Nier, promoter of KC Raceway
in Waverly, OH, south of Chillicothe, speaking of the upcoming Saturday
September 13 appearance of the famed Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series Late
Models for the KC 100 Circleville Oil Challenge race that will pay a heft
$10,000 to the winner. “They bring all the good cars and a lot of
good cars with them.” The Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series (RDRS)
will be making their second appearance of the year at KC Raceway, an ultra-fast
high-banked 3/8 mile clay oval.
The first Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series event of 2003 at KC Raceway
was held on June 21 where Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY captured his first
Renegade DirtCar Racing Series sanctioned main event victory of the season
pocketing the $7,000 top prize in the Summer Sizzler 50. The $32,000 purse
event drew 48 drivers with Bart Hartman earning the Carrera Shocks "Challenge
the Clock" time trials award with his fast lap of 15.278 seconds.
Brodix, Inc. heat race wins fell to Rod Conley, Keith Berner, Barry Bragdon
and Jerry Rice while Hartman and Tim Hitt grabbed the Mastersbilt Race
Cars "B" Main events and Lanigan copped the Isky Racong Cams
dash.
The upcoming September 13th stop at the south-central Ohio speedplant
marks the 22nd time for a Renegade series sanctioned event at KC Raceway
with ten different drivers having taken checkered flags. Donnie Moran,
the four-time Renegade champion, leads the winner’s list with six
previous triumphs including last years race and the 1995 event. Rick Aukland
has posted four triumphs while Davey Johnson, the 1993 and 1994 series
champion, has three wins at KC Raceway including the inaugural "Night
the Stars Come Out 40" in 1994. Steve Francis has won two KC while
single Renegade events at KC have went to Steve Shaver, Bart Hartman,
Mike Balzano, Chub Frank, Jackie Boggs and Lanigan.
The KC 100 Circleville Oil Challenge will attract a large field of nationally
known, as well as the top regional and local teams, to KC Raceway. Among
the current top 15 in Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series national point standings
are Chub Frank, Mike Balzano, Davey Johnson, Rob Blair, Rod Conley, Dave
Troutman, John Mason, Steve Shaver, Bart Hartman, Matt Urban, Steve Francis,
Doug Drown, Jackie Boggs, Jack Pencil and R.J. Conley.
Nier contended that this much anticipated race was help made possible
by a local company who saw the benefits in creating a marketing partnership
with the racetrack.
“Circleville Oil, that’s Tim Wilson and he’s been behind
us all year and really throwing his support to Late Model racing in area,”
revealed Nier. “They sell all kinds of race fuels and he’s
actually sponsoring a guy by the name of Mike Wilson. They’re not
related but that’s his car that Mike Wilson is driving.” Circleville
Oil Company has two locations, a storage facility at 1080 S. Washington
Street, Circleville, and a propane office located at 310 West Mount Street
in Circleville.
Nier also feels confident that his production will be a success in part
due to the national recognition that comes with booking the Renegade Dirt
Car Racing Series, a national dirt Late Model sanctioning body nearly
20 years old and recognized as a leader in the sport.
“What can you say about (RDRS Race Director) Bret (Emrick) and
those guys?” offered Nier. “They’re Late Model people
to the core, they pour their heart and soul into their organization and
every time they come down they’re professionals, their shows go
without a hitch and they bring great entertainment value to our region.”
Nier has other reasons for bringing in the national series more than
once a year to his racetrack.
“Some of the Late Model shows we’ve had this year have been
some of the best shows we’ve had all year,” stated the Sprint
Car racer-turned-promoter. “They’re really professionals and
really good drivers and close door-to-door action. It’s a good deal.”
In addition, brining in a series and form of racing that a group like
Renegade offers, broadens his fan base the second-year racetrack owner
has found. “I see a bunch of new faces every time I bring in a sanctioned
Late Model group like the Renegade’s. It just brings a whole different
group of people to my track and it’s great.”
A complete program of CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the Clock"
time trials, BRODIX,INC. heat races, MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B"
Mains and the ISKY RACING CAMS dash will be held prior to the feature
event. The "Delaware Double-File Restarts" will be utilized
in the feature race only.
Jim Nier's KC Raceway is located twelve miles south of Chillicothe,OH
on U.S. Route 23 to Alma, OH then west two miles on Blain Highway. For

DOUG DROWN MAKES TWO RENEGADE RACES DESPITE MOTOR WOES
By Jarrod Lehman
Wooster, OH --- Doug “The Kid” Drown just came off another
weekend of dirt Late Model action by making the main events during this
past weekend’s North Carolina swing for the Renegade Dirt Car Racing
Series at the New Carolina Speedway in Lawndale, NC and the New 311 Speedway
in Madison, NC. Drown is chasing the Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series (RDCS)
Rocket Chassis Rookie of the Year title, with his American Payroll Advance/
Longhorn Steak House Restaurant/Fought Signs Rocket Chassis/Malcuit Racing
Engines/Carrera Shocks #12.
On Friday evening at Carolina Speedway Drown started the feature race
in 24th and mustered a 19th place finish. On Saturday evening, nursing
a sick motor, Drown again started 24th with a 22nd place finish. Drown
cracked the top 15 in season points with this weekend’s main event
runs (he missed the Florida series) and currently sits in third in the
rookie points chase.
“The motor was running rough at the end of the feature Saturday
night so we’re going to pull it out and take it down to Brad’s
(Malcuit),” commented Drown. “We were hoping to go to The
DREAM but unfortunately with motor problems we won’t be able to
now. That’s kind of disappointing but on the other hand it will
give us time to get better prepared and ready for the Renegade three-day
weekend in West Virginia. That’s kind of more important to us since
it’s a series deal and we made a commitment to Renegade.”
“We’re real happy with everything. We’ve made all of
the Renegade races so we’ve went to.
It’s a whole learning experience and that’s what we’re
here for.”
With Drown’s plans to go to Eldora Speedway this coming weekend
eliminated due to motor repairs, the team will take the weekend off to
regroup and prepare for the big three-day Renegade sanctioned “You
Da Man Weekend” in West Virginia. “You Da Man Weekend”
begins on Friday, June 13, as Interstate 79 Speedway hosts the series
for the Kendle West Virginia State Championship Race No. 2, a 50-lap main
event paying $5,000 to win. Gates open at 5 p.m., hotlaps begin at 6 p.m.
and racing begins at 8 p.m. Adult general admission tickets are $20. Children
12 and under are free. Pit passes are $35.
On Saturday, June 14, the Dingess Lumber 50 will be held at Elkins Speedway.
The 50-lap event will pay $7,000 to win. Adult general admission tickets
are $20. Children age 6-12 are $1. Pit admission is $35. Gates open at
5 p.m., hotlaps begin at 6 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m.
The weekend wraps up with the Charter Media You Da Man 30 at West Virginia
Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 15. Advance tickets are $18 for general
admission and $30 for pits. Tickets purchased on race day are $20 for
adults and $5 for children age 6-12, and $35 for pits. Gates open at 4
p.m., hotlaps begin at 6 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m.

rown will follow the Renegade tour with Rocket Chassis, Carrera Shocks
and Malcuit Racing Engines as his arsenal bearing his #12. Crewmembers

Crew chief and team manager is Drown’s father, Jeff Drown, a former
championship racer who had many years of success around central Ohio.

Moran "The Man" In Renegade Series Action At Muskingum County
Speedway!!!
Donnie Moran of Dresden,OH captured his 74th career Renegade DirtCar
Racing Series sanctioned feature event Saturday pocketing $7,500 for his
flag to flag victory in the "10th Annual Dunn/Hartman/Lutz/Tanner
Memorial 50" at Muskingum County Speedway near Zanesville,OH. The
four-time Renegade champion powered into the lead at the drop of the green
flag aboard the QPI Tools/Eddie's Sunoco/Sunoco Race Fuels No. 99 Donnie
Moran Racing MasterSbilt Race Cars/Malcuit Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte
Carlo and never looked back taking the win by four car lengths over Mark
Banal. Finishing third was 19th starting Jay Watson with R.J. Conley fourth
and Rob Blair fifth. Completing the top ten were 24th starting Davey Johnson
in sixth followed by Jackie Boggs, Billy Drake, 16thy starting Doug Drown
and 22nd starting Mike Balzano.
"The car was just perfect", stated Moran to his hometown fans.
"My hats off to my race day crew chief Brad Malcuit and the rest
of the guys for preparing an absolutely great car. I could drive it anywhere
I wanted to."
Blair and Moran brought the 25 car field to the green flag with Moran
winning the drag race into turn one. Moran opened up a two car length
lead on Blair as lap one was completed with Banal third, Dave Troutman
fourth and Ryan Markham fifth. By Lap 10 Moran had pulled out to over
a 20 car length lead over Blair with Banal and Troutman still third and
fourth respectively with Conley now fifth ahead of Boggs, Markham, Sammy
Stile, Matt Urban and Scott Peltz.
Moran entered lapped traffic one lap later but it never slowed his pace.
However a caution on lap 14 for a Chub Frank spin in turn two slowed Moran's
pace but opened the track in front of the leader. Moran continued his
dominance pulling out to full straightaway lead by lap 20. Banal was now
second with Conley third then Blair and Boggs followed by Stile, Watson,
Drown, Troutman and Drake.
Lapped traffic on lap 26 slowed Moran's pace somewhat allowing Banal to
close the huge gap on Moran. But caution on lap 28 for Peltz's disabled
car slowed the action once again. Moran couldn't shake Banal on the restart
with Banal staying in striking distance of Moran for the next several
laps as great racing for position was happening behind the two frontrunners.
With 10 laps remaining Moran had pulled out to a three car length lead
over Banal with Watson now third ahead of Conley and Blair with Boggs
sixth ahead of Drown, Johnson, Drake and Stile.
As the remaining laps clicked off Moran used the lapped traffic to his
advantage to open up a four car length lead over Banal. But the battle
for sixth through tenth was a dandy with Johnson moving up to sixth from
laps 46 through 49 while Balzano grabbed the tenth spot as the white flag
waved.
The $32,500 purse event attracted 45 drivers to the semi-banked 3/8ths
mile track with Watson earning the CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the
Clock" time trial award with his fast lap of 16.663 seconds. BRODIX,INC.
heat race wins fell to Moran, Banal, Conley and Boggs while Corey Conley
and Frank grabbed the MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B" Mains and the
ISKY RACING CAMS dash fell to Blair.
The Renegade DirtCar Racing Series will travel Friday and Saturday to
two North Carolina speedways for the sanctioning organizations first trip
to the "Tar Heel State" since the 1996 season. Nearly $60,000
in total purse money has been posted for the "Battle In Carolina"
which will take place at New Thunder Valley Speedway in Lawndale,NC Friday,
May 30 and at New 311 Speedway located near Madison,NC Saturday, May 31.

DOUG “THE KID” DROWN HAS BUSY WEEKEND
WOOSTER, OH --- Last weekend Doug “The Kid” Drown, in his
quest for the Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series (RDCS) Rocket Chassis Rookie
of the Year title, made the main event for the "Battle At Brushcreek
50" presented by Coca-Cola at Brushcreek Motorsports Complex near
Peebles,OH with his Longhorn Steak House Restaurant/American Payroll Advance/Fought
Signs Rocket Chassis/Malcuit Racing Engines/Carrera Shocks #12.
As the field raced off of turn four to complete lap one outside pole
sitter Jackie Boggs smacked the outside wall damaging his car beyond repair.
That moved fourth starting Drown to the outside pole for another go at
a start. The 20 year-old ROCKET CHASSIS "Rookie of the Year"
contender jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and led lap
one followed by the third starting Johnson, fellow "R.O.Y" contender
Dave Troutman, Delmas Conley and Mike Balzano. Before another lap could
be recorded Bill Blair Jr. spun in turn two. The yellow was right back
out on the restart when Sara Maloney limped to a stop with broken left
front suspension.
One lap after going back to green Johnson shot past Drown to lead lap
2. As the checkers waved Drown placed 14th after mechanical woes with
seven laps to go. In preliminary action Drown qualified fifth fastest,
ran second in heat two and finished fourth in the dash.
“This weekend went good,” stated Drown. “The team did
everything we had to do to make the show and be competitive. The night
started off great with fifth quick time. Then to finish second in our
heat was even more awesome, because I usually struggle with being aggressive
in my heat to make the races, but last night we didn't.”
“I would have never thought I would have been in a Renegade dash
yet but it was a great feeling. Then to run so great in the feature just
to get a flat tire with 7 to go really hurt. We were running fifth at
the time right on Shavers bumper when I ran over a piece of aluminum angle
about one and a half feet long that flattened the tire. The reason I can
tell you how long it was is because when I took the hood off the piece
was laying on top of the left header.”
On Friday night Drown raced at Lakeville Speedway in Lakeville, OH where
he won his heat race and finished fifth in the feature event.
With the Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series idle this coming weekend (May
10) Drown will travel to Prestonburg, KY for the season opening MACS race
at Thunder Ridge Motorsports Complex for their season opener. Last season
Drown was a regular on the MACS tour.
In addition, the MACS are announcing a new kids’ reading club for
the 2003 racing season. In response to “No Child Left Behind Act
of 2001” the MACS organization has created a Checkin’ Out
Reading Club. This program is designed to encourage children and their
families to read regularly to improve reading fluency, decoding skills,
vocabulary development, and comprehension. Scheduled to appear at the
Pit Stall in Prestonsburg, KY to promote this new program will be defending
MACS champion, Jack Pencil and ’02 series' Hard Charger, Doug Drown.
The following weekend Drown will be back on the Renegade trail with an
appearance at Jim Nier’s KC Raceway in Chillicothe, OH for KC Raceway’s
annual “The Night The Stars Come Out” featuring the Renegade
series and the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars.
Drown will follow the Renegade tour with Rocket Chassis, Carrera Shocks
and Malcuit Racing Engines as his arsenal bearing his #12. Crewmembers
include brother, Dan Drown, Steve Hershberger, Dwayne Miller, Scott Delaney
and Ken Moser. Crew chief and team manager is Drown’s father, Jeff
Drown, a former championship racer who had many years of success around
central Ohio.
Drown has sponsorship support from Longhorn Steak House, Wooster Glass
Co., American Payroll Advance, Fought Signs, Stan Hover Racing and Gary
& Mary Hites.

Renegade Series "Battle At Brushcreek" To Chubzilla!!!
Three-time defending Renegade DirtCar Racing Series champion Chub Frank
of Bear Lake,PA scored his second sanctioned win of the season Saturday
taking the $7,000 top prize in the "Battle At Brushcreek 50"
presented by Coca-Cola at Brushcreek Motorsports Complex near Peebles,OH.
Starting seventh aboard the Corry Rubber/Corry Lazer Technology/Nystrom's
Auto Sales/Draime Racing Engines/Rocket Chassis No. 1* Chub Frank Racing
Chevrolet Monte Carlo, "Chubzilla" used a "slingshot"
move exiting turn four on lap 37 to pass Davey Johnson for the lead. Frank
then worked his way through lapped traffic holding off Johnson by two
car lengths to secure the win.
"Man, what a ride!", stated the very happy winner. "This
place is just like they call it, wicked fast. Your just constantly on
the throttle and turning left! Credit to my crew chief "Boom"
Briggs and the rest of the guys on the crew. We talked about what we were
going to have to do in order to win this. Davey got out there and was
really strong on the bottom to middle. I just told myself you got to go
against the wall and hang on. This place is definitely different but it's
a fun track to drive."
Trailing Frank and Johnson were 14th starting Rod Conley in third with
Delmas Conley fourth and Chuck Harper fifth. Rounding out the top ten
finishers were 12th starting Steve Shaver in sixth followed by 25th starting
Matt Urban then John Mason, 23rd starting John Rhoades and 22nd starting
Mike Wilson.
As the field raced off of turn four to complete lap one outside pole sitter
Jackie Boggs smacked the outside wall damaging his car beyond repair.
That moved fourth starting Doug Drown to the outside pole for another
go at a start. The 20 year-old ROCKET CHASSIS "Rookie of the Year"
contender jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and led lap
one followed by the third starting Johnson, fellow "R.O.Y" contender
Dave Troutman, D. Conley and Mike Balzano. Before another lap could be
recorded Bill Balir Jr. spun in turn two. The yellow was right back out
on the restart when Sara Maloney limped to a stop with broken left front
suspension.
One lap after going back to green Johnson shot past Drown to lead lap
2. Again the yellow was out before lap 3 was in as Ryan Markham broke
a rear wheel sending him into the frontchute wall. Johnson pulled away
to a healthy lead once the race got back underway and with 10 laps in
the books Johnson enjoyed an eight car length lead over Drown with Balzano
now third ahead of Frank and Troutman trailed by Harper, D. Conley, Mason,
Rd. Conley and Greg Oliver.
Oliver's top ten run came to a halt on lap 13 when his steering failed
sending him spinning in turn two and then pitside. On the restart contact
in turn two sent cars spinning and Bill Cunningham pitside with a severly
damaged front end.
Johnson again broke away from the field once the green replaced the yellow.
By lap 20 Balzano had moved into second and was gaining ground on Johnson
with Frank now third ahead of Troutman and Drown with D. Conley sixth
ahead of Rd. Conley, Rob Blair, Harper and Shaver.
Two laps past the halfway point contact entering turn three sent Blair
spinning collecting Tim Dohm and Shane McLoughlin. On the restart contact
again in nearly the identical spot sent Troutman spinning collecting Dohm
again and Bill Williams.
Balzano stayed right with Johnson on the restart and used a "slingshot"
pass exiting turn four to grab the lead from Johnson on lap 28. However,
just as Balzano crossed the stripe on lap 29 his engine let go giving
Johnson the lead back as Balzano coasted into the pit area. As the laps
clicked off Frank began to reel in Johnson and closed to the leaders back
bumper when the caution flew on lap 37 when Williams tagged the outside
wall exiting turn four.
Frank stayed glued to Johnson's back bumper once the race was restarted
and inched his way up the track going down the backchute. Entering turn
three and four Frank went all the way up against the wall and full-throttled
his way past Johnson for the lead he would never give up. Johnson stayed
within two car lengths of Frank with 10 laps to go while Rd. Conley was
now third ahead of his father Delmas with Shaver now fifth ahead of Harper,
Mason, Wilson, Urban and Rhoades.
With 5 laps to go Frank encountered lapped traffic which slowed his pace
to allow Johnson to close to within a car length of the leader. But once
Frank cleared the traffic he was able to pull away from Johnson for the
win.
The $32,000 purse event at the 3/8ths mile high-banked tri-oval attracted
33 drivers with Johnson earning the CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the
Clock" time trial award with his fast lap of 14.294 seconds. Taking
the BRODIX,INC. heat race wins were Frank, Balzano and Mason while R.
Blair won the MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B" Main and Troutman copped
the ISKY RACING CAMS dash.

DOUG DROWN RACES IN PENNSYLVANIA; ADDS NEW CREW TO TEAM
By Jarrod Lehman
Wooster, OH --- Last weekend Doug “The Kid” Drown, in his
quest for the Renegade Dirt Car Racing Series (RDCS) Rocket Chassis Rookie
of the Year title earned some points by making the main event for the
“Bedford Bash 40” at Bedford Speedway in Pennsylvania with
his Longhorn Steak House Restaurant/American Payroll Advance/Fought Signs
Rocket Chassis/Malcuit Racing Engines/Carrera Shocks #12.
The RDCS event scheduled for Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland was rained
out so the team headed west and stopped at Pittburgh’s PA Motor
Speedway Saturday evening where The Kid also made the show. In addition,
two new crewmembers have joined Drown Racing.
“This past weekend started off great Friday night at Bedford where
we qualified ninth fastest,” explained Drown. “Won the b-main,
but in the feature Scott and I made the wrong tire selection and it KILLED
us. I couldn't even get a hold of the track, which is why we finished
at the back. But everyone was still happy that we made the race and even
turned a few heads. We were just hoping for a top 20 qualifying time,
so when we qualified ninth that was awesome to us.”
At Bedford Drown finished fifth in his heat race, one slot shy of the
starting field. Forced to run the B-Main, Drown won the race handily to
make the starting field where he finished 19th.
With the Hagerstown Speedway race postponed due to rain the team headed
to Pittsburgh for their Twin 20’s even. Drown scored the April 5
season opener feature win at PPMS.
“We went to PPMS on Saturday and we could never hit the setup quite
right and I needed to drive the car better than I did,” said Drown.
“But we did learn a few things which is always a good thing.”
Drown finished 17th and 14th in both features.
In other news, Drown announced the addition of more crewmembers including
Dwayne Miller and Scott Delaney. Delaney is a former crew chief and crewmember
for Al Purkey, John Mason, Charlie Duncan and his father, George Delaney.
“I do have Dwayne Miller and Scott Delaney helping out now and
hopefully Scott will be able to help out the rest of the season or until
his Dad starts racing again,” commented Drown. “He was a big
help this weekend setting the car up and tuning the chassis.”
“I'd also like to thank Steve Hershberger on my crew for doing
an outstanding job getting everything ready this weekend and Courtney
Flinner for keeping on top of things and letting us know when we needed
to hurry up. At Bedford the crew only consisted of Scott, Steve, and Courtney
but they did a hell of a job, I wish every weekend could go that nice.”
Next up for Doug Drown and the Renegade DirtCar Racing Series is a first
time ever visit to Brush Creek Motorsports Complex near Peebles, OH Saturday,
May 3 for the $7,000 to win "Battle At Brush Creek 50". Promoter
Tom Partin has posted over $32,000 in purse money for the Apple Creek,OH

Electronic transponder scoring will be used for the "Battle At Brush
Creek 50" and the Delaware Double-File Restarts will be utilized
in the feature event only.
Pit gates will open at 4:00pm with spectator gates opening at 5:00pm.
Hot laps will begin at 6:00pm immediately followed by CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge
the Clock" time trials. Racing is scheduled to begin after time trials
with a complete program of BRODIX,INC. heat races, MASTERSBILT RACE CARS

July 25 Is CORRECT Date For Next Renegade Series Event At Hagerstown
Speedway!!!
Incorrect information concerning the date for the next scheduled Renegade
DirtCar Racing Series event at Hagerstown (MD) Speedway was given in a
series press release Saturday.
Hagerstown Speedway will host the Renegade Series Friday, July 25 (not
July 11 as published) for the $10,000 to win "22nd Annual Stanley
Schetrompf Memorial/ 56th Anniversary 50".
Renegade "Schetrompf Memorial At Hagerstown Speedway Falls To Weather!!!
Continuous rain showers Saturday and the forecast for more rain forced
officials of the Renegade DirtCar Racing Series and Hagerstown Speedway
to cancel the $7,000 to win "22nd Annual Stanley Schetrompf Memorial
50". The event will not be rescheduled.
However, the "Stanley Schetrompf Memorial 50" title will be
combined with the next Renegade DirtCar Racing Series sanctioned event
at Hagerstown Speedway. The July 11 event will now be known as the "22nd
Annual Stanley Schetrompf Memorial/56th Anniversary 50" and will
pay $10,000 to the winner from the $42,000 purse.

Davey J. Bags "Bedford Bash 40" In Renegade Action!!!
Bedford,PA 4-25-03
Davey Johnson of Greensburg,PA kicked off the "northern portion"
of the 2003 Renegade DirtCar Racing Series schedule bagging the $5,000
top prize in the "Bedford Bash 40" at the Bedford Speedway in
Bedford,PA. The 1993 and 1994 Renegade Series champion tracked down early
race leader Mike Balzano and powered past Balzano on the high side of
turn four to lead lap 13 and then held off Balzano by a wide margin to
pocket his 48th career series victory. Bart Hartman finished third with
Tom Myers fourth and Chub Frank fifth. Sixth through tenth were D.J. Myers
followed by Eric Zembower in seventh then Rick Eckert, Scott Haus and
Steve Shaver.
The driver of the Reliable Painting/Malcuit Racing Engines/Carrera Shocks/MasterSbilt
Race Cars No. 19J Beitler Enterprises Pontiac Grand Prix told the crowd
from victory lane, "I knew Mike was not going to give up the bottom
groove so all I could do was try the high groove to see if it worked.
This is a great way to get the northern season underway. We've done some
early racing this year trying to figure this car out and I think we might
have it. I need to thank Dale Beitler, the car owner, and the guys on
the crew. They did a great job getting the car right".
Tom Myers and Balzano brought the 26 car starting field to the green flag
with Balzano leading lap one ahead Myers, fourth starting Johnson, Bart
Hartman and fast qualifier Todd Andrews. Balzano opened up a huge margin
over Myers by lap 5 with Johnson all over Myers for the position. Johnson
worked his way into second on lap 9 with the racing slowed for a Jack
Pencil frontchute spin.
On the restart Balzano kept to his low grrove line with Johnson right
on his back bumper. Racing off of turn two while working lap 13 Johnson
stepped to the outside and raced side by side with Balzano into turn three.
Johnson throttled his way past Balzano exiting turn four which proved
top be the winning pass. Great racing was happening all through the field
but the race was slowed again on lap 15 for debris on the backchute.
Balzano stayed right with Johnson on the restart and at the halfway point
the top 10 rundown had Johnson with the lead ahead of Balzano, Hartman,
Andrews and T. Myers with Jeremy Miller sixth ahead of Chub Frank, D.J.
Myers, Eric Zembower and Rod Conley. Andrews brought out the races final
caution on lap 26 when he slowed to a stop in turn four with a flat right
rear tire.
Johnson this time on the restart ran away from Balzano and the rest of
the field opening up a nearly full straightaway length lead. Jeremy Miller
blasted past Hartman for third on lap 26 but suddenly slowed on the backchute
two laps later and headed pitside with mechanical problems.
Johnson caught the backmarkers in the field with two laps to go and slowed
up allowing Balzano to close but time ran out for Balzano as Johnson took
the checkered flag ten car lengths in front of Balzano.
The $27,000 event drew 49 drivers to the slightly-banked 1/2 mile fairgrounds
track with Todd Andrews earning the CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the
Clock" time trial award with his fast lap of 21.486 seconds. Taking
the BRODIX,INC. heat race wins were Devin Friese, Eric Zembower, D.J.
Myers and Dave Kepner. Doug Drown and Wayne Johnson copped the MASTERSBILT
RACE CARS "B" Main events while the ISKY RACING CAMS dash fell
to Tom Myers.

Renegade DirtCar Racing Series Amends Start And Restart Rules!!!
After several weeks of discussion officials of the Renegade DirtCar
Racing Series have amended the rules for starts and restarts at all sanctioned
events.
"After one night of competition at the East Bay (FL) Raceway Park's
February 'Winternationals', the drivers voiced some concerns with our
start and restart rules" stated race director Bret Emrick. "We
listened to the drivers concerns and amended the rules for the subsequent
nights of racing at East Bay. And, after discussing things for the past
several weeks agreement was reached by our officials to amend the start
and restart rules for the remainder of the 2003 season".
Emrick continued, "We will still utilize the cone/pylon placed midway
between turn four and the flagstand for all of our starts and restarts.
Under the old rule for starts if a driver went early we gave them a warning.
The second offense would move them to the tail. With the amended rule
the only warning they get is at the drivers meeting. If a driver starts
early we will move them back a row.
"For the restarts under the amended rule, the lead car may not pick
up the pace until reaching the cone/pylon regardless if it's a single-file
restart or a Delaware restart. If the lead car starts to pick the pace
up before reaching the cone/pylon that driver will be penalized two positions.
The old rule said the lead car could start to pick up the pace exiting
turn four but that is no longer in effect.
"We are making these amendments to present a better product on the
track for the fans and to make things more equal for the drivers. The
drivers just have to remember that the races start and restart at the
cone/pylon and not before. The drivers do their part and we won't have
to penalize anyone."
Amendments To Race Rules Section Of 2003 Renegade DirtCar Racing Series
Rulebook, Pages 12, 13 and 14, Rule 2, Rule 6 and Rule 7 (effective 3-24-03).
Rule 2: All original starts will be double-file and start at a traffic
cone/pylon placed midway between turn four and the starters stand. Front
row should approach the traffic cone/pylon at a moderate pace, approximately
4000 rpm, keeping nose pieces of car as even as possible. Once front row
has reached the traffic cone they may accelerate and race will be underway.
ANY FRONT ROW driver accelerating early (before traffic cone/pylon) will
be penalized by moving back a row. ANY OTHER DRIVER in the field accelerating
early (before green flag is waved) will be penalized by moving back a
row.
Rule 6: All single-file restarts MUST be nose-to-tail and start at the
traffic cone/pylon placed midway between turn four and the starters stand.
Leader should approach the traffic cone/pylon at moderate pace, approximately
4000 rpm. Once the leader has reached the traffic cone/pylon they may
accelerate and race is back underway.
If the leader accelerates early (before the traffic cone/pylon) the leader
will be penalized two (2) positions at the next caution or at the end
of the event.
Drivers, other than the leader, may not pass the car in front of them
until they have passed the traffic cone/pylon. Doing so will be considered
a "jump start" and offending driver(s) will be penalized two
(2) positions for each car "jumped" at the next caution or at
the end of the event.
Any driver (including lead car) passing to the inside of the traffic cone/pylon
or hitting the traffic cone/pylon will be penalized two (2) positions
at the next caution or at the end of the event.
Rule 7: NEW FOR 2003 - "Delaware Double-File Restarts" will
be implemented during Feature event only at certain tracks. Once caution
is thrown cars must slow down. Field will be put into correct running
order in a single-file line. ALL scored cars one (1) lap down to the leader
will be placed at the rear of the single-file line. Once correct running
order is established, the field will be placed in "Delaware Double-File
Restart" order. Leader of race will be placed alone in front of the
field. Second (2nd) place car must signal to frontchute on-track official
choice of either inside or outside restart position. Remainder of field
will line-up double-file.
EXAMPLE #1: Second (2nd) place driver chooses inside. Third (3rd) place
driver goes outside of second place, fourth (4th) place driver goes inside,
fifth (5th) place driver goes outside of fourth (4th) place driver, etc.,etc.
EXAMPLE #2: Second (2nd) place driver chooses outside. Third (3rd) place
driver goes inside of second (2nd) place driver, fourth (4th) place driver
goes outside, fifth (5th) place drivers goes inside of fourth place (4th)
place driver, etc.,etc. Once field is properly aligned you will come back
to the green flag.
Leader should approach the traffic cone/pylon at a moderate pace, approximately
4000 rpm, and may accelerate once they have reached the traffic cone/pylon.
If the leader accelerates early (before the traffic cone/pylon) the leader
will be penalized two (2) positions at the next caution or at the end
of the event.
Remainder of field must stay nose-to-tail and may not pass the car in
front of them until they have passed the traffic cone/pylon. Doing so
will be considered a "jump start" and offending driver(s) will
be penalized two (2) positions for each car "jumped" at the
next caution or at the end of the event.
Any driver (including lead car) passing to the inside of the traffic cone/pylon
or hitting the traffic cone/pylon will be penalized two (2) positions
at the next caution or at the end of the event.
NOTE: If caution is thrown inside of five (5) laps to go, restart will
be single-file.
