HUNTSVILLE, AL-The O'Reilly Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series will
return to the The Dirt Track at Lowes Motor Speedway on Wednesday night
October 8th to be part of another great event, as the series will be
teaming up with the USAC Sprint Cars for a great doubleheader night o
racing action. The O'Reilly Southern All Stars event will use the same

cars and it is a 25 lap event paying $5,000 to win.
Clint Smith of Senoia, GA., will lead the SAS drivers into the event
at
Lowes Motor Speedway, which by all indications will be the biggest crowd
ever to watch a Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series event, as it is
being held in conjunction with the big Winston Cup Weekend at the Lowes
Motor Speedway. Smith is looking for his fourth title and was looking
forward to a battle with Duayne Hommel, who was seriously injured in a
car accident a little over a week ago. Smith and all the rest of the
drivers involved in the top voted to award Hommel points for the
remaining races during the season so he will remain in the series
standings. Third place in points is Mike Head of Ellenwood, GA., fourth
to the current rookie of the year leader Jeff Cooke of Spartanburg, SC.,
and fifth to Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL., these drivers should
be in action at Lowes.

TALALDEGA, AL-The O'Reilly Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series returned
to the 1/3 mile Talladega Short Track Friday night as part of the
Winston Cup weekend racing in the area and 60 SAS Super Late Models
signed in for the event with several Winston Cup drivers also trying to
get in the 50 lap main event, but when it was all over Ray Cook of
Brasstown, NC., in a new Mastersbilt house car went to the high side of
the track and then work his way into the lead on lap 37 as he moved by
Shane Tankersley to take the lead and the $4,000 first place money.
Mark Mears of Decatur, AL., set fast time with a 13.895 lap and the cars
that were advanced into the 24 car starting field through the three last
Chance events were Patrick Duggan, Ray Cook, Kevin Gibson, Todd Morrow,
Greg Skinner and Ken Schrader. The only Winston cup driver of the three
in attendance to make the event as Bill Elliott and Robby Gordon failed
to advance through their respective last Chance events.
Mears moved into the lead at the drop of the green with Clanton second
and Ronnie Johnson third. Mears soon got passed by Clanton and was in
the top spot and seen to be on his way to getting is first series win,
but Johnson was soon moving up to the top sot as he was now in the
groove that Cook was using and was starting to work on Mears for the
second spot when he went high in turns three and four and went off the
track ending his night.
On the restart Clanton was till on top but Mears was starting to fade
and that is when Tankersley was starting so show his muscle as was on
his way to getting his career first series win and was strong in the
latter half of the race, but Cook was coming up fast and with Tankersley
on the bottom and Cook high, he just moved around Shane to take over the
top sot and get the win. Tankersley in his best run with the series
since coming back came home in second, third to Bo Shirley of Gadsden,
AL., back on the series run in a long time, fourth to local track
favorite Jimmy Hudgins of Talladega, AL., and fifth to David Gentry of
Wheel, TN., in his best run with the series this year.
Finishing in the sixths spot was Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, GA.,
after a strong run in the front at the early part of the race, seventh
to Joe Armistead Jr., of Sharpsburg, GA., in one his best runs with the
series this year, eighth to Mike Head who drove the car of Ross
Martin's, ninth to Ken Schrader of Fenton, MO., in his strong run from
his 22nd starting spot, and tenth to Oxford, AL,, drivers Greg Skinner
from his 19th starting spot.
On a series note all the drivers in attendance in the top ten in points
voted to award the current SAS Champion Duayne Hommel who was seriously
injured in an automobile accident 50 points for each of the remaining
races for the rest of the season.
The next SAS event will be Wednesday night October 8th at the Lowes
Motor Speedway a 25 lap $5,000 to win event. This event will be part of
the USAC Sprint Car and O'Reilly Southern All Star Doubleheader weekend.

BIRMINGHAM, AL--The O'Reilly Southern All Star Super Late Model Series
returned to action after a month and half lay off, with the series at
Birmingham International Raceway for the Neil Bonnett Memorial/Hound Dog
102. While the action on the track was typical exciting, Charlie
Bradberry's winning pass was made in the pits, after the 102 laps had
been completed.
John Wilkinson III was the fastest of the 20 cars to qualify,
turning the 5/8 mile oval in 20.044 seconds. Inversion put Wayne Willard
on the pole, with Willard winning the last three All Star events at BIR,
the though of a Willard romp trickled through the air. And the start of
the race saw nothing to dispute that thought. Willard took the lead at
the drop of the green flag and pulled out to lead the first 20 laps. But
when the caution came on lap 20 for Darrell Brown's spin in turn two,
Willard pulled into the pits due to a broken oil pump belt. Dave Mader
III took over the lead followed by J.R. Norris, Wilkinson, Bradberry,
and Jeff Letson.
On lap 30, Mader dropped off the pace when his power steering went
out. Mader fell back to seventh in the running order, but settled back
to make a strong run back to the front. Norris took the point, but just
11 laps later, Wilkinson moved inside of Norris to take the lead. The
caution waved three laps later and brought the first round of pit stops.
Mader, Andy Antinoro, Johnny Brazier, Brown pitted for their spares.
Mader was the first of the leaders out, which was important for his
charge back to the front.
Wilkinson led Norris, Bradberry, Letson, and Jackie McGuire to the
halfway point. On lap 57, the caution waved again, bringing Bradberry,
Letson, McGuire, and Norris to the pits. Mader, who had made his way
back to third, moved up to challenge Wilkinson. But Bradberry was about
to put on a show coming from the back. By lap 75, Bradberry was back in
the top five.
On lap 89, the race was red flagged when Brazier, Brawn, and Gary
Nix got together, leaving Brazier's Taurus upside down in turn three.
The race was restarted with 13 laps to go with Wilkinson up front,
followed by Mader, Bradberry, Letson, and Brown. Bradberry, with fresher
tires, quickly got by Mader, but couldn't run down Wilkinson before the
checkered flag flew.
During post race inspection, series' officials broke down the tires
from the top three cars. Wilkinson's tires had the distinct odor of tire
soak when separated from the rims. The series doesn't allow tire
softeners and Wilkinson's win was taken away. The winner's trophy was
handed to Bradberry. Mader moved into the runner up spot with Letson
third, Brown fourth, and McGuire fifth. Sixth through tenth went to
Antinoro, Steve Holt, Brawn, Sidney Minton, and Nix.
The series will be back in action next week in the Williams Bothers
Lumber National Late Model 300 at Lanier National Speedway. The weekend
consists of Twin 150's for the Super Late Model and Pro Late Model
series.

MONTGOMERY, AL-The O'Reilly Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series
returned Saturday night to The Dirt Track@Lowes Motor Speedway and Steve
Lucas of Charleston, WV., put his Rocket Monet Carlo in victory lane for
the $10,000 to win event and it was done in a fashion that no dirt late
model fan or driver has ever competed under.
Drivers were notified in the drivers meeting of double file restarts,
which was not new to the drivers, but how they were setup was as and
official would hold out a sign for the field that said CHOOSE on it and
the drivers needed to pick the top or the bottom as soon as they past
the sign. This was done for the entire field in every race and it had
drivers using to their advantage as they picked what line they thought
would work best for them.
In the first of six heats Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN., took the win over
Clint Smith, Billy Hicks and Ed Basey as the top four in each event
advanced to the feature. Heat two saw Steve Lucas take the win over
Shane Tankersley, Larry Blankenship and Dan Bruer. Third heat action
had Mike Duvall, who was inducted into the Lowes Motor Speedway dirt
track Walk of Fame take the win over Earl Pearson Jr, Scott Bloomquist
and Jeff Cooke. In the fourth heat race Ricky Weeks took the win over
Jeff Smith, Freddy Smith and Royce Bray. The fifth heat race saw Donnie
Moran scored the victory over Sam Simmons Terrance Nowell and Buckshot
Miles and the sixth and final heat had Chris Madden taking the win over
Randle Chupp, Duayne Hommel and Doug Sanders. This set the first 24
starters for the event.
In the first of two Last Chance races Dennis "Rambo" Franklin
took the
win over Hot Rod Lamance and Josh Manning, while Jeremy Clements took
the win in the second Last Chance event over Kelly Thacker and Chuck
Southard. The final two spots for the 32 car starting field went to
Southern All Stars provisionals Bryan Hendrix and Steve Phillips
After and inversion of the six heat race winners Donnie Moran of
Dresden, OH., was on the pole with Mike Duvall on the outside and the
drop of the green flag Duvall pulled ahead of Moran in turn one took the
point with Moran second, but after the completion of one lap series
points leader Duayne Hommel spun in turn three and had to go to the end
of the field. As the field doubled back up for the restart Duval pulled
Moran again for the top spot and started to pull ahead of the field and
built a 10 car length lead until Lucas started to make his move to the
front and took over the lead on lap 7. The caution came back out on lap
8 and Hot Rod Lamance's night end in turn four. Duvall was now in the
second spot with Pearson third, Arp fourth and Chris Madden fifth.
Pearson used the double file restart to his advantage this time and got
into the second spot and started to battle for the lead with Lucas, Arp
was now in third, Duvall fourth and Freddy Smith was now making his
presence in the fifth spot, when caution came out for the crash of
Buckshot Miles in turn three.
Pearson jumped into the lead on the next restart as he got ahead of
Lucas and these two new that it was going to be a battle down to the
wire between them for the top spot, as Arp. Freddy Smith and Jeff Smith
were all battling it out for the third spot.
The most serious crash of the night happened on lap 17 as Chris Madden
came off turn two side ways and Jeff Cooke made contact with Madden
sending Madden flipping down the backstretch. Duayne Hommel was sliding
trying to avoid the incident and was one of the first to reach Madden
in
his car to check on him and Hommel was allowed to retain his position
on
the track.
At the halfway point the top five remained the same but on lap 22 Lucas
made his move to get under Pearson and take over the top spot. A spot
he would never relinquish the rest of the race.
The final caution of the night was on lap 35 as Freddy Smith's top five
run ended as he slowed on the track with mechanical problems ending his
night.
Lucas survived on more double file restart and held off Pearson's late
race charge to get his first Southern All Star win, Earl Pearson Jr.,
of
Jacksonville, FL., came home in the second spot, third to Skip Arp of
Georgetown, TN., fourth Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC., and fifth to Clint
Smith of Senoia, GA.
Rounding out the top ten were Ricky Weeks, Mike Duvall, Donnie Moran,
Ed
Basey and Larry Blankenship.
Overall a very exciting night at the Dirt Track@Lowes Motor Speedway
and
by fan reaction to the event, they loved the action.
The next O'Reilly Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series events will be
n
Friday & Saturday night September 26th & 27th Friday night at
the
Talladega Short Track for a 50 lap $4,000 to win event and Saturday

SAT SEP 27-CLEVELAND SPEEDWAY-CLEVELAND, TN $4,000
MONTGOMERY, AL-- J.R. Norris hasn't run the full O'Reilly Southern All
Star Pro Late
Model schedule. For the three drivers fighting for the series championship,
it's probably a good thing. Saturday at Montgomery Motor Speedway, Norris
scored his third victory in five starts this season with the traveling
series. His latest win came with the same dominating fashion as the first
two, as he again led all 100 laps to take the win.
Norris set fast time in qualifying with a time of 19. 780 around
Montgomery's ½ mile oval, and that was all Norris needed. At the
drop of the
green flag, Norris outran outside pole sitter Fredrick Moore to turn one
and
never looked back. Montgomery regular Duwayne Middlebrooks closed to Moore's
bumper and continually looked for a way past the title contender.
Although Middlebrooks was able to stick his nose under Moore's Monte Carlo,
Moore was
able to power off the turns and retain the second position.
Paul Kelley, who came into the race with a 12 point lead in the series
championship race, began to fall off the pace around the lap 25 mark.
The culprit was a slack tire due to a rim being bent in the close, wheel
to
wheel action. Kelley got a break when the race was red flagged on lap
40 for
clean up of an oil spill. Kelley was able to change the tire and repair
other damage under the stoppage.
Norris led the field to the half way point, followed by Moore,
Middlebrooks, Shannon Dodson, and Joey Logano, a thirteen year old making
his first series' start. Kelley was making his way back through the pack.
Middlebrooks was still trying to find a way past Moore, but his night
came
to an end on lap 67 with engine problems. Dodson picked up the challenge
on
Moore, along with Augie Grill, who was steadily picking off cars after
starting twelfth.
Just as the caution came out on lap 87, Dodson and Grill were able to
slip past Moore. Norris, still had the race well in hand, but the race
for
second was about to get real interesting. When the race restarted with
8
laps to go, Norris pulled out to a four car length lead, but Grill was
all
over Dodson. Coming to the checkered flag, Grill stuck his nose under
Dodson
and moved him up the track. The pair rubbed fenders all through turn four,
with Grill gaining the advantage as they headed down the straight and
beating Dodson to the line. Moore was close behind in fourth. Dwayne Buggay
made a late race charge to finish fifth. Chase Miller was sixth. Logano
made an impressive showing in seventh. Bubba Pollard was eighth, Jeremy
Broome ninth, and Kelley coming back to a tenth place finish.
With four races left in the season, Moore and Kelley are tied for the
series' point lead. Miller is only six points back in third. Dodson moved
into fourth place, with Bobby East moving into the top five. The next
scheduled race for the Pro Late Model series is October fourth at Lanier
National Speedway. For more information, contact the series at (256)

HUNTSVILLE, AL--The O'Reilly Southern All Star Pro Late Model Series,
in
its first year of existence, has become known as a competitive series.
Evidence of this
fact comes in the form of the close side by side racing that is the norm
for the series, and a list of six different winners in its first six races.
J.R Norris brought that streak to a halt Saturday night at Birmingham
International Raceway. Norris led all 100 laps to win a July 12th event
at BIR and repeated the feat Saturday night, becoming the series' first
repeat winner.
Norris set the fastest time in qualifying and brought the field to
the green flag with Gary Helton on the outside. Helton had the preferred
groove, but Norris beat Helton to turn one to grab the lead. However,
the cars
of Chase Miller and Evan Vines Jr. got together on the front stretch,
resulting in a complete restart. Miller, who entered the event second
in points,
restarted on the rear while Vines night was over before it really got
started. On the restart, Norris again got the jump on Helton, and the
battle for second place as on.
Helton was able to stay close to Norris all night, but Norris never
slipped to give Helton the opportunity he was looking for. Helton, who
won the first Pro Late Model Series race at BIR earlier this year was
able
to peak under Norris after a restart just before the halfway point of
the
race, but Norris had the line Helton needed and maintained his lead.
Miller was making his way back through the field and became
involved in a great battle for the sixth spot with Scott McGuire just
past the
50-lap mark. Miller spent the last half of the race trying to find a way
past
McGuire. Miller could get his nose under McGuire, once pulling even, but
like Norris and Helton, McGuire had the preferred outside line. While
Miller and McGuire were going at it, David Elliott was able to work his
way
past both on the inside. John Bolen was able to make a run from back in
the
pack and work his way past both Miller and McGuire late in the race.
As the race entered its late stages, Norris built his biggest lead
of the night as he headed to the checkered flag. Helton was four car
lengths back as the checkers fell. Paul Kelley extended his points lead
with a
third place finish. Fredrick Moore got back on track with a fourth place
effort.
Stephen Leicht made his first series' start and came home with a fifth
place showing. Sixth through tenth went to Elliott, Bolen, McGuire, Miller,
and Bobby East.
Kelley now leads the series' point chase by 12 over Moore. Miller
is just 14 points behind Kelley in third. The series will move to South
Alabama Speedway for a September 6th 100-lapper. For more information,

2003 SOUTHERN ALL STAR PRO LATE MODEL RACING SERIES SCHEDULE
(Tentative Schedule--Subject To Change)
SAT SEP 13-MONTGOMERY SPEEDWAY-MONTGOMERY, AL
HUNTSVILLE, AL--Georgia driver Brian Huff piloted his Southern Lawn and
Irrigation/FastTrack Racing Products/Outlaw Brakes Chevrolet to the pole
with a fast time of 14.239 seconds around the high banked oval at
Huntsville. Making the accomplishment even more remarkable, it was
Huff's first ever visit to Huntsville Speedway. Huff rolled a three on
the inversion die, placing the 2002 O'Reilly Southern All-Stars
SuperTruck Champion Roger Adkins of Canton, Georgia on the pole for the
event itself alongside the 2003 points leader Richard Johns in the Team
ASE/NetZero Chevrolet.
At the drop of the green, Roger Adkins took the lead with Brian Huff
moving inside of Richard Johns for second. Adkins maintained the lead
until lap 6 when Huff scooted Adkins out of the groove to take the lead,
opening the low line for Richard Johns, Shannon Berry, and David Odell
to steamroll Adkins who was resigned to the high groove.
Huntsville native Johnny Wall, a pre-race favorite had performance
problems all afternoon on his Kinetic Performance/Orthopedic Center
Chevrolet and resigned to the pits at lap 9 with a spoiled valve cover
gasket.
Spencer Teal and Vince Whitmire exchanged bumps and shoves as the two
battled for seventh place at lap 18 with Whitmire, the second place
points contender in the series, taking the position a lap later.
Another local favorite, Shannon Berry, had looked strong in the opening
laps, but began to fall back at this point, dropping to sixth as Roger
Adkins and Chris Serio surpassed him for position. Berry's woes
continued at lap 33 when Vince Whitmire moved inside to take sixth.
Meanwhile race leader Brian Huff continued to pace the field with the
image of Richard Johns and David Odell growing ever so slightly larger
in his rear view mirror.
Former Huntsville Speedway regular Steve Malone saw his evening begin
to
go south at lap 48 when smoke began to billow from the rear of his G&S
Automotive entry. Chris Serio improved his position to fourth, passing
up Roger Adkins for the spot at lap 53. Josh Adkins and William Horton,
Jr. were looking to work their way around the Shannon Berry truck when
caution was thrown at lap 57 for suspected rear end dope leaking on the
racing surface from the number 15 of Steve Malone.
Southern All-Stars officials also discovered that the third place truck
of David Odell, currently running second in the points standings, had
developed an oil leak, requiring Odell to enter the pits to fix the
problem before continuing. Racing resumed at lap 61 with Brian Huff
still in control of the lead and Richard Johns and Chris Serio hot on
his heels. Vince Whitmire improved to fourth spot, passing Roger Adkins
on the restart. Adkins and the number 20 Auto America of Spencer Teal
would repass Whitmire at lap 66 when his truck slid up the hill through
turns one and two. Caution came again at lap 75 when Shannon Berry
looped his truck at the exit of turn 2. Green flew again at lap 79 with
Huff, Johns, and Serio nose to tail.
The tightest battle on the track was between the fifth and sixth place
running trucks of Teal and Whitmire who made contact on the start when
Whitmire attempted to take the position. Whitmire moved inside of Teal
to take the spot as lap 85 as David Odell made his way back through the
pack, taking seventh from Josh Adkins. At lap 89 caution flew once more
for Berry's truck as he spun out of turn 4 in front of the leaders. An
eight lap shootout ensued with Richard Johns looking to take the
position from Brian Huff. Johns made contact with Huff as Huff attempted
to retain the lead, spinning Huff into the inside retaining wall on the
front stretch.
This placed Johns in the lead with 5 laps remaining, but things were
beginning to get interesting when Huff looked to take retaliatory action
against Johns, ramming the rear of Johns' truck and destroying his in
the process as he ricocheted off of Johns' rear quarter panel and
impacted the inside retaining wall at the exit of turn 4.
On the restart another spin ensued in turns 3 and 4 with Michael Foy
and
William Horton, Jr. spinning in turns 3 and 4. Shannon Berry plowed into
the stalled vehicles, doing further damage to his machine. Another
attempt at a restart saw Chris Serio and leader Richard Johns tangle
giving Johns a flat right rear tire. Johns was allowed to return to the
lead despite entering the pits due to the precocious nature of his flat
tire, so the restart saw Johns and Serio nose to tail for the restart.
In a dramatic last lap finish, Chris Serio made contact with Richard
Johns while battling for the lead. The duo collected the third place
runner Roger Adkins, allowing Vince Whitmire to come from fourth on the
last lap to capture the victory, followed by David Odell, Josh Adkins,
and Spencer Teal.
Whitmire stated he knew something was going to happen given a history
between Johns and Serio and he just hoped to be in the right position.

(Tentative Schedule--Subject To Change)
FRI OCT 10 MOBILE INT'L SPEEDWAY-MOBILE, AL
HUNTSVILLE, AL--Mike McComiskey started the 20 lap Mini Stock feature from the prized pole position alongside Eddie Dodd in the Posten’s Overhead Door number 88. McComiskey went to the front at the green as Dodd attempted to fight back in the high line. Chris Carter, Clint Holloway and Adam Gunter nearly ran short of real estate as the trio raced three wide into turn 3 while battling for fourth on lap 2. Carter won the battle before falling off the pace at lap 5. Adam Gunter and Cliff Holloway raced door handle to door handle for third spot before Gunter finally slid underneath to claim the spot on lap 8.
At the halfway point, McComiskey continued to pace the field with Eddie Dodd a close second. Dodd moved to the inside of McComiskey at lap 11 to take the lead as they scraped paint through turns 3 and 4. Dodd held on to take the win followed by Mike McComiskey, Adam Gunter, and Cliff Holloway.
Charles Faulkner started his North Alabama Heating and Cooling number 59 on the pole for the special 25 lap Hobby Cup mega-feature next to the number 63 of Toney, Alabama’s Eddie Gibbs. Division points leader Bradley Carter started the race thirteenth in the same row with his points rival and second place points runner Jeff Thomas in the Mr. Transmission number 25. Michael Jordan was strictly hammer down at the green slinking his way from fourth to the lead at the completion of the first lap. Billy Byrd took his Leprechaun Surplus Outlet machine to the outside to make the pass on Michael Sims, as caution flew at lap 4 for the spinning car of Doritos Ortiz in turn 2. Both Michael Halbrooks and Teresa Bearden became involved attempting to avoid the incident with Bearden making contact with the prone Plymouth Fury or Ortiz.
Under the caution period, division points leader Bradley Carter was forced to enter the pits for repair to a flat tire. Michael Sims and Michael Halbrooks also had to seek service under the caution period. Carter returned to competition at the tail end of the pack, as Michael Jordan took the green to restart the event. Billy Byrd and Josh McWhorter commanded the low line, moving to second and third before Charles Faulkner and McWhorter made contact sending McWhorter spinning into the retaining wall. Faulkner retired to the pits as McWhorter expressed his displeasure at being spun.
The race resumed with Michael Jordan leading and the wily veteran Billy Byrd in second. Jeff Thomas closed in on the front runners and moved to the high groove to move to second at lap 6, but an incident involving Doritos Ortiz and Michael Halbrooks brought out the caution before the lap was complete, moving Byrd back to the runner-up spot behind Michael Jordan. On the restart, Jordan was able to retain his lead, followed by Byrd and the strong car of Jeff Thomas. Bradley Carter also used the high line to move to fifth at lap 8 as Jeff Thomas finally completed the pass on Billy Byrd for second. Thomas quickly closed on the rear deckled of Michael Jordan and took the Mr. Transmission car high to attempt the pass. Jordan held his ground and Thomas was unable to pass as Bradley Carter closed from third after taking that spot from Jonathan Campbell. Jeff Thomas finally took the lead as Jordan worked lapped traffic at lap 14, leaving Carter trapped behind the number 29 of Jordan. Carter took the position from Jordan at lap 17 after running a lap high and tried to close on the race leader Jeff Thomas.
Meanwhile, Billy Byrd and Jonathan Campbell raced side by side for four laps racing for fifth before Campbell closed the deal and took the position. With two laps to go Thomas and Carter had to navigate heavy lapped traffic with Eddie Gibbs trapping the leaders down on the apron as they raced side by side on the final circuit. Gibbs was an unfortunate victim as his car spun towards the wall in turn 4 with Jeff Thomas edging Bradley Carter by a nose at the line followed by Josh McWhorter, Michael Jordan, and Jonathan Campbell.
The Bates Auto Salvage Buzz Division had a change of pace for their 15 lap feature Saturday night as they started their feature at the back gate instead of the traditional start/finish line starting position.
Steve “Flipper” Jones who has won several times in the division started from the pole along with Ray Tucker and Anthony Yates. The field sped for turn 3 when flagman James “Smitty” Smith dropped the green. Jones went to the quick lead with Tucker in pursuit. Michael Neely had a high stress moment on the second lap when he spun his number 92 car in turn 3, but he was able to straighten the car and continue with no caution. Jones and Tucker began working lapped traffic allowing the 55 of previous feature winner Colby Guthrie to close the gap in third and surpass Ray Tucker for second at lap 11.
Caution came on the same lap for the number 16 of Randy Finster who stalled on the front stretch. The front three cars of Steve Jones, Ray Tucker, and Colby Guthrie restarted the race three wide, again from the backstretch. Steve Jones took the lead when the green was displayed, but not without pressure from Colby Guthrie. Jones and Guthrie split the lapped machine of Tommy Hargroves through turns 3 and 4 with Jones taking the victory at the line.

(Tentative Schedule--Subject To Change)
SUN AUG 31-BIRMINGHAM INT'L RACEWAY-BIRMINGHAM, AL
TOCCOA, GA--The O'Reilly Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series returned
to the 5/16th mile Toccoa Speedway in Toccoa, GA., for the first time
in
over 10 years and when they came back in 2003 a capacity crowd was on
hand a stayed through a rain delay into the wee hours of the morning to
see Duayne Hommel of Newport, TN., get his 9th win of the year with the
series.
Hommel set fast time of the 42 cars on hand with a lap of 12.374 and
local favorite David McCoy on the outside. At the drop of the green
flag Hommel and McCoy ere side by side as the headed down the back
stretch and into turn three only for Hommel to pull ahead of McCoy a
little until a melee broke loose in the read of the field that
eliminated the cars of Bryan Hendrix and Randy Hemphill.
The next start saw Hommel and McCoy racing side by side for the top spot
with Chris Madden third, Dabs Potts fourth and Ricky Harvey fifth. The
second caution came out as Madden and McCoy made contact and it
collected the cars of Harvey and Potts and McCoy, with Potts the only
one able to return to the race. Also in the other turn of the track
James Roulette and Doug English both had their nights end under this
caution.
Finally after several more cautions, the drivers settled down for the
remaining 25 laps and Hommel was as his normal pace as he worked the
lapped traffic to his advantage and keep Pennington off guard the whole
night on traffic and restarts to get the win. Pennington came home in
the second spot for his best finish of the season with the series, third
to Dennis "Rambo" Franklin of Gaffney, SC., who worked his way
into the
top five, fourth to Hot Rod Lamance of Six Mile, SC., and fifth place
goes to Clint Smith of Senoia, GA., who crashed earlier in hot laps in
his primary car as it rode the guard rail betweens turns three and four
tearing the right front suspension off the car. Smith rolled out a back
up and got another top five finish for the season.
Finishing in the sixth spot was Shan Tankersley of Morganton, GA.,
seventh to Buck Simmons of Baldwin, GA., eighth to Greg Knight of
Suwanee, GA., who was also the PPM racing Products Hard Charger of the
Race, ninth to Mike Head of Ellenwood, GA., and tenth to Tim Headen of
nearby Martin, GA.
The next event for the O'Reilly SAS Dirt Racing Series
is Saturday night
September 13th at the Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC., a 40 lap

HUNTSVILLE, AL--Fast qualifier for the evening Chris Whorton drew a four
from the dreaded pill bottle placing him fourth in the lineup for the
first of two 35 lap features presented by WTAK 106.1FM and Skill Lube.
John Henagar, Jr. of Scottsboro started from the pole in his Jet-Pep
sponsored Monte Carlo alongside former three-time Huntsville Speedway
Track Champion Casey Bishop.
The action started fast and furious from the drop of the green possibly
a little too furious when outside pole sitter Bishop over anticipated
the start drawing a quick caution and a warning from flagman James
"Smitty" Smith. The second start was agreeable with Bishop and
Henagar
coming to the green side by side. Behind the front duo, Cahela and
Whorton battled side by side for third and fourth while the remainder
of
the field thinned out to single file. Bishop assumed the lead at lap 6
with Whorton following into second. Keith Cahela made his run inside of
Henagar at lap 10 to move to third and begin pursuit of Whorton and
Bishop who were engaged in mortal combat for the top spot.
Caution flew at lap 12 for a single car spin involving Ryan Jolley that
placed Bishop, Whorton, Cahela, Henagar, and Eddy Cagle nose to tail in
the front five positions. On the restart, Casey Bishop got an excellent
start, pulling to a slight advantage over Whorton before Chris closed
back on the rear deck of the number 6 machine. Keith Cahela joined the
fray at lap 17 as he closed on the top two and looked to work on second
place Chris Whorton. Whorton moved to the outside of Bishop at lap 20
to
take the lead moving Bishop to second, before Keith Cahela surpassed him
for the second spot at lap 23.
Caution came once more at lap 28 when the Ryan Jolley car made contact
with Bobby Castleberry's Tendall and Sons Monte Carlo spinning him at
the exit of turn 4. Chris Whorton held on to take the victory, his tenth
of the 2003 season, followed by Keith Cahela, Casey Bishop, Eddy Cagle,
and John Henagar, Jr.
Brian Bentley and Eddy Cagle brought the twelve car field to the green
flag for the second 35 lap Cowboy Corner Used Cars Late Model feature.
Cagle went to the lead with Bentley following. Casey Bishop worked to
move beneath Brian Bentley who closely guarded the low groove. As Bishop
looked to work past Bentley, Chris Whorton worked to the outside trying
to pass Bishop, but the Bentley machine moved to the middle of the
racing surface forcing Bishop to make contact with him spinning Brian
and causing the first caution. Bishop returned to second place as the
caution was thrown for the spinning car of Bentley. Eddy Cagle held his
ground as green flag racing resumed with Bishop and Whorton in pursuit.
Whorton tried several lines to work around Bishop for second before
Whorton made contact with the car, spinning him in turn 2. Bishop
suffered a flat left rear tire in the altercation and some cosmetic
damage but resigned to the pits for the remainder of the race. This
placed Whorton on the rear of leader Eddy Cagle. Whorton moved to pass
Cagle high but Eddy held his ground racing side by side with Whorton for
the lead. Whorton finally took the point with eight laps remaining
leaving Eddy Cagle to battle Keith Cahela for second. Whorton took his
eleventh win of 2003 followed by Eddy Cagle, Keith Cahela, Phil Renfroe,
and Friday Hassler, Jr
In Open Wheel Modified action the drawn four car inversion placed Wayne
Jones on the pole for the first of two WTAK/Skill Lube 35 lap Open Wheel
Modified features. Points leader Gary Wade Finley who has five feature
wins in the 2003 season would have to come from fourth position if he
was to take his sixth win of the season. Jones went to the early lead
with Jeff Letson following into second while Keff James was forced to
settle for third on the first lap. Tim Beverly making his first start
of
2003 raced side by side with Jerry Gibbs for sixth before Beverly
claimed the spot for his own at lap 5. Caution came at lap 8 when the
car of Tommy D. Hall was involved in a single car spin exiting turn 4.
Wayne Jones definitely hated to see the yellow displayed as he had
worked to a comfortable half straightaway lead over runner-up Jeff
Letson.
On the restart, Jones, Letson, and James were nose to tail. Scarcely
a
lap passed when caution flew again as Jerry Gibbs made contact with Tim
Beverly in turn 3, sending Beverly spinning towards the outside
retaining wall in turn 3. Beverly spared the car from wall contact and
was able to continue. However, Beverly restarted directly behind Gibbs
instead of at the rear of the field, potentially costing him four spots
in the final order. Caution came once more at lap 14 for the spinning
car of Larry Smotherman in turn 2. This allowed Tim Beverly to rectify
his previous restart transgression and spare himself from being
penalized in the official finish. With six laps remaining, Jeff Letson
tried desperately to move inside of Wayne Jones, but Jones proved too
strong in the Gary Finley, Sr. prepared machine, holding on to take the
win over Letson. Keff James, Gary Wade Finley, and Brian White.
Wayne Jones was penalized in post race inspection for unsecured weight
in the driver's compartment, receiving last place points and position.
This gave the victory in race one to Jeff Letson.
In only his second open wheel race of 2003, Harvest driver Tim Beverly
started the second 35 lapper from the pole alongside Huntsville's Craig
Bell. Tim Beverly took the lead as the runners-up went three wide with
Gary Wade Finley, Bell, and Brian White rubbing tires down the
backstretch. Finley went to the lead followed by Beverly, Keff James,
and Jerry Gibbs. Wayne Jones, penalized in the first race for unsecured
weight, drew the first caution, spinning in turn 3 at lap 5. Jones had
already worked his way into sixth position when the spin occurred. The
caution placed Tim Beverly back on the rear bumper of his cousin, Gary
Wade Finley to do battle for the lead. Caution came one lap later when
Brian White's Appliance Direct number 24 spun in turn 4 when he and the
Kinetic Performance/Moody Monday's number 38 of Jerry Gibbs made
incidental contact.
On the restart, Gary Wade Finley got an excellent start bluffing Beverly
as he put the hammer down. Keff James and Jeff Letson, running third and
fourth respectively put heavy pressure on runner-up Tim Beverly until
a
mechanical failure on Jeff Letson's machine sent him careening into the
outside retaining wall in turn 3. The race restarted with eight laps
remaining and points leader Gary Wade Finley in control of the lead.
Keff James moved to the high side at lap 14 to challenge Beverly for
second, but Beverly held his ground to maintain the position. The move
allowed Wayne Jones to move inside of Keff James whose car began to slip
in the high line. James would spin the car to bring out caution at lap
17 after making contact with Craig Bell. On the restart Wayne Jones
successfully navigated the high line to take second over Tim Beverly,
but ran out of time as he tried to catch Finley for the win.
Ken Loveday, already a feature winner in the 2003 season, looked to make
it two when he started from the pole alongside two time feature winner
and 2002 Rookie of the Year Eric McClure for the 30 lap feature.
At the green Ken Loveday went to the lead but a massive quagmire ensued
when the Pizza Hut number 62 of David Priest made contact with Eric
McClure while moving through the middle of turns 3 and 4, stacking up
several fast cars behind as they attempted to clear the accident. Eric
McClure, David Priest, fast qualifier Dewayne Fowler, and points leader
Scott Couch were all involved in the melee. A complete restart was
dictated due to no laps being completed in the feature with Ken Loveday
still on the pole, this time starting next to rookie of the year
contender Phillip Price. Harold Sloan who came into this event having
won four features in a row now moved to the outside of the second row
to
try to make it five consecutive wins. David Priest returned to the event
at the tail of the field after reporting to the pit for repairs to his
damaged car. Loveday took the lead at the green with Robbie Sands
following him into second. Sloan quickly backslid while trapped in the
high groove, setting him up to be steamrolled by the field. Robert
Buchanan put on an impressive showing diving beneath Phillip Price for
third at lap 8, and then closing on Robbie Sands for second. Mark
Collins was taking advantage of Buchanan's strong run following him
through the opening in the low groove to third at lap 12. Robert
Buchanan was able to close on Loveday with five laps remaining as they
closed on lapped traffic, but it was to no avail as Ken Love
