on
Saturday night to set starting spots seven through 12 in the big show.
Drivers finishing fourth on back in the six heats will come back on Saturday
night in one of three consolation races in which the top three finishers
will transfer to the big show in starting spots 19 through 24. Starting
positions 25 through 28 will be provisionals of the Xtreme DirtCar Series
and the Renegade DirtCar Series, and starting spots 29 and 30 will be

having to earn an invitation during the course of the season.
Due to the large number of requests from drivers wanting to compete
in The
Shootout that did not earn an invitation during the season, Xtreme DirtCar
Series President Doug Bland made the decision to drop the invitational
status of the event, and open it up to all competitors. Anyone that has
an
XDCS-legal race car and pays a $100 entry fee can now compete in The
Shootout.
On October 11, the XDCS will compete in Ringers Gloves Qualifying, heat
races, and the Action Performance Dash. Drivers that earned a Ringer Gloves
Fast Time Award in 2003 will also compete in the $5,000-to-win Isky Dash.
A total of 16 drivers are currently eligible for the Isky Dash. Heading
the
list is Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA, who has nine Ringer Gloves Fast
Time Awards, and will pick up a $5,000 bonus from Ringers Gloves at the
series Awards Banquet. Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, and Jimmy Mars
of Elk Mound, WI each have three fast time awards.
Chris Madden of Gray Court, SC, Rick Eckert of York, PA, Dale McDowell
of
Rossville, GA, and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY each have two fast time
awards. Nine drivers have one fast time award apiece.
Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, Jason Montgomery of Jackson, OH, Shannon
Babb
of Decatur, IL, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Matt Miller of
Waterville, OH, Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV, Billy Moyer of Batesville,
AR, Scott Peltz of Cadiz, OH, and Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC have
all
earned a spot in the Isky Dash.
On October 11 the XDCS machines will compete in consolation races and
the
$55,000-to-win 14th Annual Xtreme Shootout 100-lap main event.
For a limited time until October 3, advance general admission seats for
The
Shootout are only $40 for rows 6-10 and also include both days. There
are
still some reserved seats for rows 3-5 that are also available until October
9 for $52 which also includes both days.
Tickets can be charged by phone with a Visa or MasterCard by calling
770-926-5315 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. General Admission
tickets purchased at the gate on race day will be priced higher.
ROCKET CHASSIS CLINCHES FOURTH STRAIGHT CHASSIS MANUFACTURERS CHAMPIONSHIP:
Rocket Chassis of Shinnston, WV has clinched its fourth consecutive XDCS
Chassis Manufacturers Championship. Drivers have wheeled Rocket Chassis
to
six XDCS wins so far this season.
Rick Eckert of York, PA has three wins, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY
has
driven the Rocket "house car" to two wins, and Earl Pearson
Jr. of
Jacksonville, FL has one win. Competing with Rocket Chassis in the XDCS
Chassis Manufacturers Challenge are Warrior Race Cars of Knoxville, TN,
Larry Shaw Race Cars of Batesville, AR, and GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier,
AR.
DUAYNE HOMMEL CONTINUES TO IMPROVE: Duayne Hommel of Newport, TN continues
to improve after suffering a serious head injury in a highway accident
on
September 23. Hommel has been upgraded to serious condition at University
of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN.
According to Hommel friend and family spokesman, fellow late model
competitor Ron "Flea" Fleenor of Knoxville, TN, Duayne's vital
signs have
been good and steady for the past few days, and he has been responding
to
people when they touch him.
"This morning he was moving his feet, arms and head and is wanting
the hell
out of bed. They were putting the 'trach' in and the feeding tube in his
stomach today and everything went great. All his gauges are 'still' good,"
Fleenor said. "Now it's been a three good days in a row, so I am
going to
ask everybody to keep doing what you've been doing because it seems to
be
working pretty well at this point."
A large group of drivers, crew members, race officials, and fans gathered
on
Saturday and Sunday at the XDCS event in Madison, NC for a prayer service
conducted by Dirt Racing Outreach.
During the weekend at the Xtreme DirtCar Series/Renegade DirtCar Series
co-sanctioned Charter Communications RaceFest World Championship at West
Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg, WV, a replica door panel of Hommel's
#H2 race car will be raffled off with tickets available at the WVMS booth
for $1.00 each.
Todd Frye of Poske Performance is coordinating this effort, and all proceeds
will go to the Hommel family. The winning ticket will be drawn prior to
the
100-lap $25,000-to-win main event.
Hommel contemplated a run for the XDCS Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year in
2003,
but decided he needed to run another season with the Southern All-Stars
to
prepare himself and his team not only for a 2004 RoY run, but he also
wanted
to challenge for the series championship.
Hommel was the 2002 Southern All-Star Series Champion, and was a frequent
competitor with the Xtreme DirtCar Series. In 2003, Hommel had competed
in
seven events with one top five finish, and three top ten finishes. He
was
leading the SAS point standings at the time of his accident.
Those wanting to make a donation to assist his family, wife Christi and
1-year-old son Daegen Cole, may do so by contacting the National Bank
of
Tennessee, ATTN: Duayne Hommel Fund, P.O. Box 669, Newport, TN 37822.
XTREME TEAMS UP WITH RENEGADE FOR WVMS RACE FEST THIS WEEKEND
MOORESVILLE, NC - The Xtreme DirtCar Series will join the Ohio-based
Renegade DirtCar Series to voyage through uncharted waters this weekend
for
the 100-lap $25,000-to-win Charter Communication RaceFest World Championship
at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg, WV on Friday and Saturday
night.
The two dirt late model sanctioning bodies will team up for the first
time
to co-sanction a single event. Officials from the XDCS, RDCS, and WVMS
have
been in close communications in recent weeks to hammer out a race format
that uses rules and procedures from both sanctioning bodies.
"It was a real 'give and take' deal, but the guys at Renegade are
easy to
work with, and I think we have come up with rules and a format that everyone
can deal with," Xtreme DirtCar Series Competition Director Ritchie
Lewis
said. "Since all of our regular competitors have run with Renegade
in the
past, and many of the Renegade regulars have run with us in the past,
there
isn't anything in the rules or procedures that any of these drivers haven't
seen before. They shouldn't have a problem adapting to anything involving
this race."
There has been many times in recent years where the two series have
sanctioned separate events on the same weekend at the same track. In those
events, it has been a regular practice for drivers from both series to
compete in each event.
WVMS has put up over $125,000 in prize money for the Charter Communication
RaceFest World Championship. In addition to the $25,000 winner's share
of
the purse, the race will pay $2,000-to-start in the 100-lap 30-car main
event, plus there will be extra money up for grabs in the two dashes,
and
the consolation races.
In addition to the prize money, the XDCS competitors still have a lot
of
other business to attend to this weekend. Many drivers will be battling
for
a top ten points position, and a share of the $280,000 XDCS point fund
that
will be divided at the XDCS Awards Banquet in Indianapolis, IN in December.
Four-time series champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN will be
looking to wrap up his fifth XDCS Championship on Saturday night. With
two
races left in the 2003 XDCS season, it is now Bloomquist's title to lose.
He leads Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA by 139 points going into RaceFest.
Birkhofer would have to gain an average of 40 points on Bloomquist in
the
final two events of the season to take the title. That's a long row to
hoe,
but Birkhofer is up to the challenge and he hasn't given up his title
hopes.
"I'm still mathematically in the championship hunt, so I'm coming
to West
Virginia Motor Speedway this weekend to take everything I can get, and
not
give anything back," Birkhofer said. "I'm really looking forward
to racing
at West Virginia Motor Speedway because I love big, fast tracks, and I've
done well there in the past."
With 30 cars starting RaceFest on Saturday night, there will be two
promoter's options in the field, so XDCS will award points to 28 drivers.
That's a difference of 84 points, not including bonus points. At the season
ending Xtreme Shootout on October 10-11 at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock,
GA,
there will be 26 drivers earning main event points, or a difference of
80
points.
Birkhofer knows what he has to do to win the championship, but he also
knows Bloomquist is going to have to have some bad luck at the same time
to
make it possible. Birkhofer knows first hand how a round of bad luck can
change things in a hurry.
"Having bad luck is just a part of racing, and sometimes it can
really be
costly," Birkhofer said. "I was in a position to take the point
lead back
in June when we raced in Davenport, IA, but I had a mechanical failure,
and
that dropped us deep in the field at the finish. It's happened to me,
and
it has happened to Scott. He missed the show the first race of the season
in Florida, but man, he's had a good year since then."
If Bloomquist leaves WVMS with a 189-point lead, he will have officially
clinched the championship. The best that Birkhofer could do at the Shootout
is get 188 points with the win and all of the bonus points for fast time,
leading the most laps, and the Action Performance Dash win.
"The Sweep" of earning all of the points available is something
that
Birkhofer has done this season, and he's the only driver to pull it off
so
far in 2003. If Bloomquist has over a 94-point lead over Birkhofer when
they leave WVMS, all Bloomquist has to do is take the green flag for the
Shootout to clinch the title, even if Birky pulls "The Sweep."
Not only will Bloomquist be looking to secure the title and $60,000 that
goes with the championship, he will also be looking to capture his 100th
series career win on Saturday night at RaceFest. One of Bloomquist's 99
career series wins came at WVMS in 1996.
Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI leads a three-way battle for the third spot
in
the XDCS point standings. Mars has a 70-point lead over defending and
two-time series champion Rick Eckert of York, PA in fourth, and an 80-point
lead over fifth-place Steve Francis of Ashland, KY. There is a $12,000
different between third and fifth in point fund money.
The 1999 series champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA is sixth in points,
just six points ahead of Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL. Dan
Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI is eighth in points, but has been one of the
hottest drivers in series competition in recent weeks. Schlieper has won
four races since August 2, and has posted eight top five finishes in the
last ten XDCS races.
Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH is ninth in points, and Matt Miller of
Waterville, OH is tenth in the points chase. Miller has already clinched
the $10,000 XDCS Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year title for 2003.
Many of the top XDCS drivers are no strangers to RDCS competition.
Birkhofer has a Renegade win at WVMS. The 2001 win was worth $50,000 to
Birky. Moran is a four-time RDCS Champion, and Francis is a three-time
RDCS
Champion. Both have WVMS wins in both series, and Francis has two XDCS
wins
at WVMS.
The top drivers in the Renegade DirtCar Series are no strangers to Xtreme
DirtCar Series competition. Chub Frank of Sugar Grove, PA, who just
clinched his fourth consecutive RDCS championship, is also the defending
Xtreme Shootout Champion and has eight XDCS career wins.
Two-time RDCS Champion Davey Johnson of Greensburg, PA has two XDCS career
wins, and two-time RDCS Champion Mike Balzano of Parkersburg, WV also
has a
career XDCS win. Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV is tenth in RDCS points
and
11th in XDCS points. Shaver has career wins in both series.
Along with Francis and Moran, Bart Hartman of Zanesville, OH has WVMS
wins
in both series, and he is currently eighth in RDCS points. Other past
XDCS
winners at WVMS are Randy Korte of Highland, IL and Rick Aukland of
Zanesville, OH.
There have been 36 different drivers that have won races in both series,
including nine of the top 10 XDCS drivers. Only Miller does not have a
RDCS
career win, but he does have a XDCS career win, and he has won Rookie
of the
Year titles in both series, this year with XDCS and 2001 with RDCS.
On Friday, the pit gate opens at 8 a.m., and the grandstand gate opens
at 10
a.m. Tech and Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The drivers
meeting will be at 1 p.m. Hot laps for the Street Stocks and AMRA Modified
is set for 2 p.m., with AMRA Modified qualifying at 3 p.m. XDCS/RDCS hot
laps will be at 5 p.m., followed by XDCS/RDCS qualifying.
After XDCS/RDCS qualifying, the Street Stocks and the AMRA Modifieds
will
run heat races and consolation races.
On Saturday, the pit gate opens at 8 a.m., and the grandstand gate opens
at
10 a.m. There will be an XDCS/RDCS Drivers Autograph Session on Souvenir
Row that begins at 12 noon. Street Stock and AMRA Modified hot laps begin
at 3 p.m., and XDCS/RDCS hot laps are set for 4 p.m. The XDCS/RDCS heat
races will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by consolation races, and two
dashes.
The first dash will be for the six heat race winners, and will set the
first
three rows for the main event. The second dash will be for the six fastest
qualifiers that did not win heat races that will set rows four through
six
for the main event.
The Street Stocks and the AMRA Modifieds will then run their feature
races,
with the 100-lap $25,000-to-win XDCS/RDCS RaceFest scheduled for 9:30
p.m.
In conjunction with the Charter Communication RaceFest, West Virginia
Motor
Speedway will host the Chris Francis Memorial benefit golf tournament
on
Thursday, at Woodridge Plantation. The course is located approximately
one
mile south of the speedway. The event format is a four-man scramble, and
the
cost per player is $50.
Proceeds benefit the Chris Francis Memorial Fund for injured drivers
and
team members in the racing community. The fund was established in August
2001 in honor of Francis, a former XDCS Ringers Gloves Crew Chief of the
Year, an award that now bares his name.
Chris Francis was the brother and crew chief of Steve Francis. Chris
Francis passed away suddenly on August 20, 2001. To register to play in

MADDEN SMOKES 311 XTREME FIELD FOR FIRST CAREER WIN
MADISON, NC - Chris "Smokey" Madden of Gray Court, SC took
his first career
Xtreme DirtCar Series win Sunday night in the 100-lap main event at 311
Motor Speedway. After starting 16th, Madden drove the Town & Country
Paving
Barry Wright/Clements Monte Carlo to the point on lap 73, and never looked
back.
Madden battled side-by-side with Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI for over
30
laps before he got the run he needed in lapped traffic off the fourth
turn
on lap 73 to take the lead.
"Barry Wright and his crew gave me a great car tonight to come from
as far
back as we did to win the race," Madden said. "One of our goals
this season
was to win an Xtreme race, and we've gotten close, but to win it like
we did
tonight is a great feeling. Schlieper kept me on the inside coming off
the
corners and that would make me pinch the car off more than I wanted to,
but
when the opportunity came to take the lead, we were able to take advantage
of it."
Schlieper started 18th after winning the Bert Transmissions second 10-lap
Consolation Race, charged up to lead laps 23 through 72, but had to settle
for second in the Miller Brothers Coal Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Schlieper also earned the Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race
Award.
Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA led the first six laps of the race,
fell
back to as far as seventh, but rallied back in his Seubert Calf Ranches
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo to take the third spot at the checkered
flag.
The defending race champion, 1999 series champion Dale McDowell of
Rossville, GA started his Larry Shaw Race Cars/Petroff Towing Rocket By
Shaw/Kuntz Taurus from the pole position, led laps seven through 22, and
finished fourth.
Four-time series champion and current point leader Scott Bloomquist of
Mooresburg, TN rounded out the top five in the Miller Brothers Coal
Bloomquist/Custom Taurus. Bloomquist now leads Birkhofer in the XDCS
championship battle by 139 points with two races left in the 2003 season.
Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH finished sixth in the QPI Tools Dirt Ripper
Mastersbilt/Malcuit Monte Carlo, and Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC was
seventh in the Biscotti's Restaurant/Park Ohio Rocket/Pro Power Grand
Prix.
Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI took the eighth spot in the Jimmy Mars Racing
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL came back from an early race spin
to
take the ninth spot in the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus
after starting 23rd. The Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year Matt Miller of
Waterville, OH finished tenth in the McCullough Motorsports/Lo-Temp Brazing
Rocket/Russell Baker Grand Prix.
The main event was delay one day due to rain on Saturday, but when the
green
flag came out, many of the 24 drivers in the starting field were not out
for
a Sunday drive. A multi-groove track provided drivers from the back of
the
pack a route to the front.
Birkhofer took the lead from his outside front-row starting spot coming
off
the second turn on the first lap, with McDowell settling into the second
spot. Bloomquist came from his sixth starting spot into third in search
of
his 100th career series win. The first caution flag came on lap three
when
Miller spun at the end of the front straightaway.
Birkhofer brought the field down for the double-file restart followed
by
McDowell, Bloomquist, Danny Breuer of Sherrill's Ford, NC in the Wood
General Contractor Barry Wright/Burnett Grand Prix, and Eckert. With
Birkhofer running the high side of the track, McDowell stayed on the bottom,
and drove under Birkhofer for the lead on lap seven.
The second caution flag came out on lap nine when Mike Duvall of Gaffney,
SC
stalled his Cherokee Landscaping GRT/Clements Monte Carlo in turn four.
During the caution, Phil Gann of Sandy Ridge, NC, who was running in the
top
ten early in the race stalled his Gann's Race Cars and Parts Rocket/M&M
Monte Carlo in turn one.
The field went green for another lap until a four-car tangle in turn
four
brought out another yellow on lap ten. Pearson was involved along with
Mike
Chilton of White Plains, NC, Neil Welch of Mebane, NC, and Johnny Stovall
of
Madison, NC. All but Chilton were able to continue, as he parked his
Tobacco Special Racing GRT/Buck Grand Prix for the evening.
McDowell was still the leader, but in the lap of racing between cautions,
Bloomquist was able to get around Birkhofer for second. Eckert had moved
up
to fourth, and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY was fifth in the Valvoline/Mopar
Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid.
Dennis "Rambo" Franklin of Gaffney, SC restarted his Hamrick's
of Gaffney
Mastersbilt/Cornett Taurus in sixth, followed by Breuer. In ten laps,
Schlieper had charged from 18th to eighth. Mars and Moran rounded out
the
lap ten running order for the double-file restart.
Schlieper got up on the wheel when the green flag came back out. In just
two laps, Schlieper gunned his way into the top five, and was fourth by
lap
14. Schlieper passed Birkhofer for the third spot on lap 16, and he got
around Bloomquist for second on lap 20. The next car in Schlieper's sights
was the leader, McDowell.
McDowell was still running on the bottom of the race track, but Schlieper
was rim-riding up high on the cushion. Coming off the fourth turn on lap
23, Schlieper had the momentum he needed, and he drove around McDowell
to
take the lead.
The fourth caution flag of the night came out on lap 24 when Stovall
stopped
his Burnett Performance Stinger/Burnett Monte Carlo on the backstretch.
Schlieper led McDowell, Bloomquist, Francis, Birkhofer, and Mars down
for
the restart.
In the meantime, Madden had been working his way through the field in
Schlieper's wake, and was up to the seventh spot. Eckert, Franklin, and
Moran rounded out the top ten for the double-file restart, and Chupp was
just outside the top ten in 11th after starting 19th. When the green bulb
was turned on, Madden and Chupp were the movers and shakers.
Madden blasted up to fifth on the restart, and Chupp moved up to ninth
by
lap 25. While Madden battled Bloomquist for the fourth spot, Chupp slid
in
behind Madden to claim the sixth position by lap 28, dropping Birkhofer
back
to seventh. On lap 31, Ricky Weeks of Rutherfordton, NC stalled his A&A
Asphalt GRT/Clements Grand Prix in turn four to bring out a caution.
Schlieper led McDowell, Francis, Bloomquist, and Madden down for the
restart. Birkhofer had gotten back by Chupp for sixth, with Mars eighth,
David Dick of Summerfield, NC in ninth driving the D&D Grading
Rocket/Hatfield Grand Prix, and Franklin in tenth. Chupp was past Birkhofer
again for sixth on the restart, and Madden got around Bloomquist for fourth
on lap 32.
Francis slowed up on lap 33 coming off the fourth turn while running
third,
and then stopped in turn two to bring out a caution flag. That moved Madden
up to third behind McDowell. Bloomquist rode in the fourth spot, and Chupp
was now in the top five.
Madden used the outside groove on the double-file restart to pass McDowell
for the second spot, and then he was all over the back bumper of Schlieper's
car battling for the lead. On lap 36, Madden drove under Schlieper in
a bid
for the lead coming off the fourth turn, but could not make the pass.
While
that action was taking place, Chupp got by Bloomquist for fourth.
For the next 36 laps, Schlieper and Madden would race in formation.
Schlieper would run the middle groove of the track, while Madden would
stick
to the bottom of the track. Madden could drive along side Schlieper in
the
corners, but Schlieper had the advantage down the straightaways.
At the halfway point, three of the top four drivers had come from deep
in
the field. Schlieper started 18th and was leading, with the 16th starting
Madden in his shadow. Polesitter McDowell had 19th starting Chupp behind
him in fourth.
The caution flag slowed the rapid pace on lap 63 when Billy Hicks of
Mount
Airy, NC stopped his Tobacco Special Racing GRT/Buck Grand Prix in turn
four. During the caution period, several drivers were beginning to show
their concern about tire wear, but it wasn't problem for Madden.
When the field went back to green, Madden picked up where he left off,
and
took up residence underneath Schlieper's left-rear quarter panel. Birkhofer
also got busy and moved back up to the third spot.
When the leaders came up to lap the inside running Welch in the Welch's
Auto
Salvage Rocket/Joyce Monte Carlo in turn four on lap 73, Schlieper slipped
up to the high side of the track, and Madden scooted under Schlieper and
around the outside of Welch to take the lead. Once out front, Madden pulled
away and was not challenged the rest of the way.
In Sunday night preliminary action, Hicks won the first 10-lap Consolation
Race, and Schlieper won the Bert Transmissions second 10-lap Consolation
Race.
On Friday night, Francis set a new track record during Ringers Gloves
Qualifying for the 40 entrants. Francis drove around the 1/2-mile clay
oval
in 16.890 seconds for an average speed of 106.572 miles per hour. That
broke the one-year-old track record of 17.094 seconds and 105.300 miles
per
hour held by Eckert.
Birkhofer won the first 10-lap heat race on Friday night, Breuer won
the
second heat, with the third heat race going to McDowell. Gann won the
JE
Pistons fourth heat race, and McDowell earned the pole for the main event
by
winning the four-lap Action Performance Dash.
The next event for the Xtreme DirtCar Series will be this Friday and
Saturday night for the Charter Communications $25,000-to-win RaceFest
World
Championship at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg, WV. It will
be
the first time the Xtreme DirtCar Series and the Renegade DirtCar Series
will co-sanction an event together.

RAIN POSTPONES 311 MOTOR SPEEDWAY XDCS 100 LAPPER UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT
MADISON, NC - Rain on Saturday night postponed the Xtreme DirtCar Series
Consolation Races and the $20,000-to-win 100-lap main event at 311 Motor
Speedway until Sunday night. The gates will open at 4 p.m., with hot laps
scheduled for 6 p.m. The XDCS portion of the show will be run first before
the local divisions.
McDOWELL EARNS THE POLE THE 100-LAP 311 MOTOR SPEEDWAY XDCS MAIN EVENT
MADISON, NC - Defending race champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA won
the third 10-lap heat race and the 4-lap Action Performance Dash on Friday
night to earn the pole position for the 100-lap Xtreme DirtCar Series
$20,000-to-win main event on Saturday night at 311 Motor Speedway.
The 1999 series champion drove the Larry Shaw Race Cars/Petroff Towing
Rocket By Shaw/Kuntz Taurus, and he will be looking for his second straight
series win at 311 Motor Speedway.
McDowell outran Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA, who finished second
in
the dash driving the Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte
Carlo.
Birkhofer won the first heat and will start the main event from the outside
front row.
Phil Gann of Sandy Ridge, NC finished third in the dash, and won the
JE
Pistons fourth heat race in the Gann's Race Cars and Parts Rocket/M&M
Monte
Carlo. Gann will start the big show on Saturday night from the inside
of
the second row.
Danny Breuer of Sherrills Ford, NC won the second heat race, and drove
the
Wood General Contractor Barry Wright/Burnett Grand Prix to a fourth-place
finish in the dash to earn the outside second row starting spot for the
Saturday night main event.
Transferring behind Birkhofer in the first heat were Steve Francis of
Ashland, KY, Micke Flinchum of Sandy Ridge, NC, and Jimmy Mars of Elk
Mound,
WI. Four-time series champion and current point leader Scott Bloomquist
of
Mooresburg, TN was second to Breuer in the second heat race, and will
go for
his 100th series career win on Saturday night from the sixth starting
spot.
Dennis "Rambo" Franklin of Gaffney, SC and Ricky Weeks of
Rutherfordton, NC
finished third and fourth respectively in the second heat race to earn
starting spots in the main event. Following McDowell in the third heat
race
were defending and two-time series champion Rick Eckert of York, PA, Johnny
Stovall of Madison, NC, and Matt Miller of Waterville, OH.
Gann had an anxious moment after winning the fourth heat, as his car
went up
in smoke after taking the checkered flag. The smoke turned out to be steam,
as his car broke a radiator hose. His crew made quick repairs and had
him
ready to start on the pole position for the Action Performance Dash.
Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, David Dick of Summerfield, NC, and Chris
Madden
of Gray Court, SC transferred to the main event from the fourth heat,
finishing second through fourth respectively behind Gann in the fourth
heat
race.
Francis set a new track record during Ringers Gloves Qualifying for the
40
entrants. Francis drove the Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid
around the 1/2-mile clay oval in 16.890 seconds for an average speed of
106.572 miles per hour. That broke the one-year-old track record of 17.094
seconds and 105.300 miles per hour held by Eckert.
Drivers that finished fifth on back in the four heat races on Friday
night,
will have an opportunity to make the main event starting field on Saturday
night through one of two ten lap Consolation Races. Among the top 15 XDCS
drivers still on the outside looking in are Earl Pearson Jr. of
Jacksonville, FL, Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI, Jeff Smith of Dallas,
NC,
1996 series champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN, and Randle Chupp of
Mooresville, NC.
On Saturday, the pit gate and the grandstand gate opens at 4 p.m., and
there
will be an XDCS Drivers Autograph Session for the fans from 5:15 p.m.
to
6:15 p.m. on Souvenir Row. Hot Laps are scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Saturday night program will be highlighted XDCS consolation races,
and
the 100-lap $20,000-to-win main event. The 311 Motor Speedway Late Model,
Super Street, and Stock 4 Divisions will also be in action on Saturday
night.

BLOOMQUIST NEARS FIFTH XDCS TITLE AS SERIES TRAVELS TO 311 MOTOR SPEEDWAY
THIS WEEKEND
MOORESVILLE, NC - Four-time series champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg,
TN is nearing his fifth Xtreme DirtCar Series title as the series heads
to
311 Motor Speedway in Madison, NC this Friday and Saturday night for a
100-lap $20,000-to-win main event. Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA is
second in points, 154 points, behind Bloomquist.
Birky still has a chance for the title, but several things are going
to
have to go his way with three events left in the 2003 Xtreme DirtCar Series
season. Birkhofer would have to average a 52-point gain on Bloomquist
in
the last three races of the season. So far this year, Birkhofer has only
done that on two different occasions.
The 1996 series champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN can tell Birkhofer
he
has hope for the championship this season. Bloomquist has a big lead on
Smith with three races left in 1996, only to lose the championship.
So far this season, Bloomquist has an average finish of 4.63, and
Birkhofer's average finish has been 6.22. What's amazing about Bloomquist's
point lead is that he failed to qualify for the first race of the season
on
February 4 at East Bay Raceway in Tampa, FL.
Bloomquist recovered nicely from that downfall in the next 31 races
by
posting ten wins, a series leading 21 top five finishes, and 24 top ten
efforts. A win in the main event Saturday night would be the 100th series
career win for Bloomquist. This track has been good to Bloomquist in the
past, as he took a series win there in 1994.
Birkhofer has three wins, 16 top fives, and a series leading 26 top ten
finishes. Birkhofer also has a series leading nine Ringers Gloves Fast
Time
Awards, and he has clinched the $5,000 prize from Ringers Gloves for the
most Fast Times this season.
While Bloomquist and Birkhofer decide the XDCS championship there are
other
drivers with business to attend to this weekend at 311 Motor Speedway.
Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI will be trying to keep his amazing success
story alive. Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY,
and
defending and two-time series champion Rick Eckert of York, PA are locked
in
tight battle for third spot in the points chase. The 1999 series champion
Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA will be trying to take his second straight
311 series win.
Since August 1, Schlieper has posted four wins in the last nine series
events, with seven top fives, and eight top tens. His average finish in
the
last nine events has been 4.78. That's a big turnaround from his first
23
races of the season, when his average finish was 11.23. Schlieper won
the
last time out in series competition on September 20 in Rome, GA after
starting 19th.
Mars, Francis and Eckert are separated by 55 points for third through
fifth
in the points chase. Mars is third and leads Francis by 51 points, and
Eckert is fifth, trailing Francis by just four points. What's up for grabs
here is point fund money at the end of the season. Third pays $32,000,
fourth pays $22,000, and fifth pays $20,000.
McDowell will be looking for his second straight 311 win in battling
Earl
Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL for the sixth spot in the XDCS point
standings. Pearson leads McDowell by 22 points.
McDowell has led the last two series events, only to have tire problems
take
him out of contention. It's ironic that his win at 311 last season was
because his tires held up better than his competitors, as many had to
pit
late in the race for new rubber.
Many other XDCS top 20 drivers are expected this weekend at 311 Motor
Speedway. Those drivers include Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, Lucas Oil
Rookie of the Year Matt Miller of Waterville, OH, Steve Shaver of
Parkersburg, WV, Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC, Freddy Smith, Randle Chupp
of
Mooresville, TN, Shane Tankersley of Morganton, GA, and Ray Cook of
Brasstown, NC.
Among the local favorites taking on the traveling pros will be Steve
Lucas,
Dennis "Rambo" Franklin, Booper Bare, Billy Hicks, Phil Hall,
David Dicks,
Neil Welch, and Phil Gann.
On Friday night, the pit gate opens at 2 p.m. with the grandstand gate
opening at 5 p.m. XDCS Tech and Registration is from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.,
the Drivers Meeting is set for 6:30 p.m., and Hot Laps are scheduled for
7
p.m.
The Friday night program will consist of Ringers Gloves Qualifying, heat
races, and the Action Performance Dash for the Xtreme DirtCars. The 311
Motor Speedway Late Models, Limited Late Models, and the IMCA Modifieds
will
also be in action on Friday night.
On Saturday night, the pit gate and the grandstand gate opens at 4 p.m.,
and
there will be an XDCS Drivers Autograph Session for the fans from 5:15
p.m.
to 6:15 p.m. on Souvenir Row. Hot Laps are scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Saturday night program will be highlighted XDCS consolation races,
and
the 100-lap $20,000-to-win main event. The 311 Motor Speedway Late Model,
Super Stock, Street Stock, and Stock 4 Divisions will also be in action
on
Saturday night.
For race day and ticket information call (336) 427-0816, or visit the
311
Motor Speedway web site at www.311speedway.com. 311 Motor Speedway is
located five miles west of Madison, NC on U.S. Highway 311.
SCHLIEPER CONQUERS ROME IN XDCS ACTION
ROME, GA - Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI took his fourth Xtreme DirtCar
Series win of the season Saturday night in the Xtreme DirtCar Nationals
at
Rome Speedway. After starting 19th, Schlieper blazed through the field,
into the top five by lap 36, and then drove his Miller Brothers Coal
Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo from third to first on lap 57.
Schlieper then outran the series point leader, four-time series champion
Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC for
the
$20,000 top prize in front of the standing-room-only crowd. Schlieper
also
won the first 12-lap Consolation Race, and the Advance Auto Parts Hard
Charger Award.
On Friday, Schlieper spun during his first qualifying lap, and tripped
the
beam to start the clock for his second lap. That put Schlieper 45th of
54
cars on the qualifying sheet and a starting spot deep in the third 10-lap
heat. Schlieper just missed a transfer position by coming from the back
of
the heat to finish fourth.
"I just messed up on that first lap, and I didn't know the eye
beam was set
up coming off turn four, but the way the car ran in the heat, I knew it
would be good for tonight," Schlieper said. "This is a new Rayburn,
so now
we have twins in the truck. This car is just as good as the one we brought
out last month."
Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year Matt Miller of Waterville, OH finished fourth,
and early race leader, 1999 series champion Dale McDowell of Rossville,
GA,
rounded out the top five. McDowell passed polesitter Steve Francis of
Ashland, KY for the lead on lap two, and held it until Schlieper got by
on
lap 57.
The 1993 series champion Clint Smith of Senoia, GA took the sixth spot
in
the JP Drilling GRT/Race Tech Monte Carlo, and Francis finished seventh
in
the Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid. Brian Birkhofer of
Muscatine, IA ran outside the top ten for most of the race, but a late
pit
stop for tires made a big difference.
Birkhofer rallied in the closing laps to finish eighth in the Seubert
Calf
Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Defending and two-time series
champion Rick Eckert of York, PA was ninth in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett
Taurus, and 1996 series champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN started
24th
and finished tenth in the White Oaks Motorsports Warrior/Gaerte Intrepid.
Francis and McDowell raced the first lap of the big show side-by-side
with
Francis leading lap one by a half car-length. McDowell took his Larry
Shaw
Race Cars/Petroff Towing Rocket By Shaw/Kuntz Taurus around the outside
of
Francis to take the point on lap two. Bloomquist held his Miller Brothers
Coal Bloomquist/Custom Taurus tight behind the top two in the third spot.
McDowell began to pull away from the field in the early laps, and Bloomquist
moved in to challenge Francis for the second. Bloomquist made the move
by
Francis on lap 13, as McDowell closed in on the tail of the field to begin
the lapping process. McDowell had to get out of his racing groove to
negotiate the traffic, and Bloomquist used that opportunity to close in.
Cook got around Francis for third on lap 16, and joined the battle for
the
lead by lap 20. McDowell, Bloomquist and Cook raced hard for the lead
through lapped traffic, sometimes going three-wide. Bloomquist had a close
call on lap 15 went he got together with the lapped car of Derrick Rainey
of
Powder Springs, GA.
The right-front corner of Rainey's car made contact with the left-rear
corner of Bloomquist's car in turn four as Bloomquist made the pass on
the
outside. The second-place driver got sideways, but Bloomquist was able
to
catch the car before it swapped ends. In the meantime, Schlieper was
methodically working his way through the field, and was up to ninth by
lap
25.
"I was just riding along, taking it easy trying to save my tires
for the end
of a race," Schlieper said. "The car was working good just about
anywhere
on the race track, and I kept finding ways to pass cars."
Not many people even noticed Schlieper's charge to the front because
they
were focused on the tight three-car battle for the lead. The intense battle
with three-wide racing kept the crowd on their feet for a good 15 laps
before the first caution flag came out on lap 38.
Marshall Green of Dalton, GA was running sixth when he stalled on the
high
side of turn two with an overheating Woodstock Auto Exchange
Warrior/Hatfield Monte Carlo. The field lined up behind McDowell for a
double file restart. Bloomquist had the inside line in second spot with
Cook to his outside. Francis was fourth, and Schlieper had bolted up to
the
fifth spot.
Schlieper had passed Francis for fourth on the lap the caution flag came
out, but with the field coming back to the last completed lap for the
restart, Schlieper went back to fifth. Miller restarted in sixth followed
by Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville,
FL,
Clint Smith, and Birkhofer.
On the restart, McDowell opened up a three car-length advantage over
Bloomquist, with Cook looking to the outside of Bloomquist for the second
spot. Schlieper wasted no time getting around Francis to take over the
fourth spot. Schlieper was reeling in Cook for the third spot when the
caution flag came out on lap 44.
Sam Simmons of Taylorsville, GA and Wade Knowles of Tyrone, GA got together
on the backstretch, but both cars were able to continue. The double-file
restart order was McDowell leading Bloomquist, Cook, Schlieper, Francis,
Miller, Johnson, Pearson, Clint Smith and Birkhofer. There were still
23
cars running on the track.
McDowell pulled away on the restart. Schlieper passed Cook for the third
spot, and closed in on second running Bloomquist. At the halfway point,
Bloomquist and Schlieper began to close in on McDowell, and the three-car
battle for the lead was on once again.
On lap 57, Schlieper stepped to the outside and passed Bloomquist for
second
in turn one. Schlieper chased McDowell down the backstretch, stayed to
the
outside of the leader in turn three, and took the lead coming off the
fourth
turn. McDowell began to fade quickly, as Bloomquist passed him down the
backstretch on lap 58 to take the second spot, and Cook got by him for
third
on lap 59.
Miller made a move through the field, as he was up to fourth by lap 62,
and
McDowell fell back to the sixth spot. By 66, McDowell had dropped to the
eighth position behind Schlieper, Bloomquist, Cook, Miller, Francis,
Pearson, and Clint Smith.
Vernon Smith of Rome, GA stalled in turn four on lap 78 to bring out
the
third caution flag of the race. Before the yellow flag, Schlieper had
pulled out to almost a full straightaway lead over Bloomquist. The restart
had Schlieper leading with Bloomquist, Cook, Miller, Francis, Pearson,
McDowell, Johnson, Freddy Smith, and Johnson lining up double file in
the
top ten.
During the caution period, Clint Smith and Birkhofer pitted for tires,
returned to the race at the tail of the lead lap in the 11th and 12th
spots
respectively. Schlieper opened up a five car-length lead on Bloomquist
when
the field went back to green, and within ten laps was putting lapped cars
between himself and Bloomquist. Clint Smith was back up to eighth on lap
83.
Johnson cut down a right-rear tire on his Goddard Performance
Warrior/Clements Grand Prix on lap 94 to bring out the caution flag.
Pearson took his Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus to the
pits
during the caution period while running sixth.
Schlieper brought the field down for the double-file restart followed
by
Bloomquist, Cook, Miller, Francis, McDowell, Clint Smith, Eckert, Freddy
Smith, and Birkhofer. In the final seven laps of the race, Schlieper had
no
challengers.
Francis faded back to seventh while McDowell and Clint Smith moved up
to
finish fifth and sixth respectively. Birkhofer made the best of his new
tires to move up two spots and finish eighth at the finish.
In action on Friday night, Birkhofer was the Ringer Gloves Fast Qualifier
among the 54 entrants. Birkhofer turned the 1/2-mile high-banked clay
oval
in 14.041 seconds for an average speed of 128.196 miles per hour. It was
the ninth Ringer Gloves Fast Time Award of the season for Birkhofer.
Green won the first 10-lap heat race, with the second heat race going
to
Cook. Bloomquist won the third heat, and Vernon Smith in the Ideal Mobile
Homes GRT/Race Tech Monte Carlo won the JE Pistons fourth heat race and
a
$100 Bonus Award. Francis took the fifth heat, and McDowell won the sixth
and final heat.
Francis earned the pole position for the main event by winning the Action
Performance 4-lap Dash followed by McDowell, Bloomquist, Green, Vernon
Smith, and Cook. On Saturday night, Jody Summerville of Rome, GA drove
Clint Smith's JP Drilling GRT/Race Tech Monte Carlo backup car to win
the
12-lap Bert Transmissions Second Consolation Race.
Bloomquist now leads Birkhofer by 154 points in the championship battle
with three events left in the 2003 season. The next event for the Xtreme
DirtCar Series will be on September 26-27 with a 100-lap $20,000-to-win
main
event at 311 Motor Speedway in Madison, NC.

XDCS POINT BATTLE CONTINUES IN ROME, GA THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
ROME, GA - The battle for the 2003 Xtreme DirtCar Series point championship
is starting to get a little interesting going into the Xtreme DirtCar
Nationals Presented By south 107 this Friday and Saturday night at Rome
Speedway. Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA is beginning to sneak up on
four-time series champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN.
Birkhofer trails Bloomquist by 124 points with four races left in the
2003
XDCS season. Just six weeks ago, Bloomquist held a 213-point lead over
Birkhofer. Bloomquist, in addition to trying to pad his point lead, will
also be going for his 100th career series win in the 100-lap $20,000-to-win
main event on Saturday night.
Bloomquist has two career series wins at the 1/2-mile high-banked clay
oval
coming in 2001 and 1996. The two-day format for the Xtreme DirtCar
Nationals of running preliminary events on Friday night and the main event
on Saturday night is one that Bloomquist prefers.
"I like the two-day format because first of all, it pays twice
as much to
win than a one-day show does," Bloomquist said. "Plus the pace
of the
two-day event is a little slower. You have time to stand back, take a
look
at things, and have more time to prepare for the main event."
Birkhofer has burst on to the national scene of dirt late model racing
in
the last couple of years by storm. This season, Birkhofer is running for
points on the XDCS tour for the first time. Even if he doesn't win the
championship, Birkhofer says it's already been a successful season.
"To win the Xtreme championship would be something I never dreamed
would
happen to me a few years ago," Birkhofer said. "With the drivers
and teams
that run this series, I consider it an honor just to be on the same track
with them. Even if I run second in points to Bloomquist, I consider that
to
be a big accomplishment."
Birkhofer knows he is running out of time to catch Bloomquist for the
championship, but he also knows what needs to happen for him to win the
XDCS
title.
"With just four races left in the season, I know I have to keep
doing the
best I can do and try to win those races," Birkhofer said. "Bloomquist
is
going to have to have some pretty bad races for me to catch him, but
anything is possible. If that does happen, I know I have to have a win,
or
a good finish to be in a position to capitalize on that."
One title Birkhofer has clinched is the $5,000 Ringers Gloves Fast
Qualifier of the Year Award. Birkhofer has eight XDCS Ringers Gloves Fast
Times this season, and he says that's a good gauge on how much his team
has
improved this season.
"Having the most fast times this season is something we're really
proud of
because qualifying hasn't been one of our strong points in past seasons,"
Birkhofer said. "That shows we've improved our team this season.
We've got
eight fast times, and the closest other two drivers have three."
Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI, who is third in points, is still
mathematically in the hunt for the 2003 XDCS title. Mars won the latest
XDCS event on September 14 in Gaffney, SC for his second victory of the
season. Mars trails point-leader Bloomquist by 262 points.
Two-time and defending XDCS champion Rick Eckert of York, PA and Steve
Francis of Ashland, KY are locked in a battle for the fourth spot in the
XDCS points chase, and are just barely in mathematical range for the
championship. They are also not that far behind Mars for third in points.
Going into this weekend's event, Eckert leads Francis by ten points,
and
Eckert trails Mars by 66 points.
Two drivers that have visited the Rome Speedway winners circle in past
series action are battling for sixth in the point standings. Earl Pearson
Jr. of Jacksonville, FL leads 1999 series champion Dale McDowell of
Rossville, GA by 80 points. Pearson has a 1999 series win at Rome, but
McDowell has brought home three series Rome Speedway trophies from last
year, 2000, and 1999.
Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI and Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH are closely
contesting the eighth spot in the point standings. Schlieper, who has
three
series wins this season - all coming within the past six weeks, leads
Moran,
who has two straight top-five finishes, by 32 points.
Matt Miller of Waterville, OH is tenth in points, and he comes to Rome
Speedway having already clinched the 2003 Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year
honors. Other top 20 drivers expected at Rome Speedway this weekend are
Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV, Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC, 1996 series
champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN, Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC,
Shane Tankersley of Morganton, GA, and 1998 series Rome winner Ray Cook
of
Brasstown, NC.
Many of the top regional dirt late model stars will roll into Rome Speedway
this Friday and Saturday night to take on the traveling pros. Ronnie
Johnson of Chattanooga, TN will lead that contingent. Johnson leads the
list of former series winners at Rome Speedway with five victories coming
in
2002, two in 1993, 1992, and 1991.
Also look for 1993 series champion Clint Smith of Senoia, GA, Marshall
Green of Dalton, GA, Duayne Hommel of Newport, TN, Rome Speedway late
model
champion Jason Croft of Woodstock, GA, Rodney Martin of Cartersville,
GA,
Frank Ingram of Woodstock, GA, Vernon Smith of Rome, GA, and Don Jenkins
of
Kingston, GA at Rome Speedway this weekend.
Along with the Xtreme DirtCars, the Rome Speedway Sportsman cars will
be in
action both nights, and the Econo Bombers and Super Bombers join the card
on
Saturday night. The XDCS and the Sportsman Division will run Time Trials
and Heat Races on Friday night, and the Action Performance Dash for the
XDCS
will also be run on the opening night.
The Action Performance Dash will feature the heat race winners starting
inverted with the first heat race wining starting in the back, and the
last
heat race winning going from the pole. The way they finish is the way
they
will start the 100-lap main event on Saturday night. The winner of the
Action Performance dash earns the pole position.
Hooters Restaurant in Rome, GA will be sponsoring an "Honorary Crew
Chief"
for a day contest for the Xtreme DirtCar Nationals. Registration forms
for
the contest are available at Hooters Restaurant in Rome, GA. The winner
will be drawn by the Action Performance Dash pole winning driver during

Xtreme DirtCar Nationals will also be on display, and many of the other

the $20,000-to-win 100-lap XDCS main event, plus feature races for the
Sportsman, Econo Bomber, and Super Bomber Divisions.

MARS ATTACKS CHEROKEE
GAFFNEY, SC - Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI picked up his second Xtreme
DirtCar Series win of the season Sunday night in the 50-lap main event
at
Cherokee Speedway driving the Jimmy Mars Racing Mastersbilt/Pro Power
Monte
Carlo.
Early race leader 1999 series champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA
had a
cut tire under a lap 33 caution period to give Mars the point for the
restart. Mars led the rest of the way followed by Brian Birkhofer of
Muscatine, IA in the Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte
Carlo.
Mars put himself in a position to win the race when he passed Birkhofer
for
the second spot on lap four. Mars pocketed a total of $10,800 for the
win
with bonuses that included the JE Pistons 3rd Heat Race win.
The second-place finish wasn't all that bad for Birkhofer, as he gained
points on series point leader, four-time series champion Scott Bloomquist
of
Mooresburg, TN, who had tire troubles of his own, and finished 11th.
Birkhofer now trails Bloomquist in the 2003 XDCS championship hunt by
124
points with four events left in the season.
Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL finished third in the Lucas
Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus. Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH
posted his second straight top five finish with a fourth-place effort
in the
QPI Tools Dirt Ripper Mastersbilt/Malcuit Monte Carlo. Dan Schlieper took
the fifth spot in the Miller Brothers Coal Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Petey Ivey of Union, SC had a steady sixth-place finish in the Nichols
Communications GRT/Clements Monte Carlo. Defending and two-time series
champion Rick Eckert of York, PA finished seventh in the Raye Vest
Rocket/Cornett Taurus.
After starting 16th, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY drove the Valvoline/Mopar
Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid to an eighth-place finish to earn the Advance
Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race Award.
The 2003 Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year Matt Miller of Waterville, OH finished
ninth in the McCullough Motorsports/Lo-Temp Brazing Rocket/Russell Baker
Grand Prix. Larry Blankenship of Mooresville, NC rounded out the top ten
in
the LB Drywall Rocket/Hendrens Taurus.
McDowell took the lead from his outside front row starting spot coming
off
the second turn on the first lap of the race. Polesitter Birkhofer tucked
into the second spot, followed by Mars, Pearson, and Bloomquist.
The first of six caution flags in the race was brought out on lap three
when
Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC was involved in a front straightaway tangle,
spun,
hit the inside wall, and collected Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN in the Crown
Fiber GRT/Gaerte Grand Prix. Smith broke a tie rod and retired his Die
Cast
Digest Magazine/Starrette Trucking Rocket/Gaerte Monte Carlo.
After the restart, Birkhofer slipped high in turn two on lap four, and
Mars
ducked underneath to take the second spot. McDowell was able to maintain
a
five car-length advantage over Mars, with Birkhofer in third, trailing
the
same distance behind Mars. Pearson settled into the fourth spot, while
Bloomquist tried to stave off two challengers for fifth.
Joining Bloomquist in the three-car battle for fifth were Duayne Hommel
of
Newport, TN, and Jeremy Clements of Spartanburg, SC. Hommel got around
Bloomquist for the fifth spot on lap six, and then Clements got by
Bloomquist for the sixth spot on lap 11. Lap 14 saw Moran pass the Miller
Brothers Coal Bloomquist/Custom Taurus of Bloomquist for the seventh
position.
While Moran began to chase down the Hommel-Clements battle for fifth,
Shane
Tankersley of Morganton, GA brought his Hicks Specialty Welding
Rocket/Gaerte Grand prix up to battle Bloomquist for the eighth spot.
The
race would end up changing dramatically for Clements, Bloomquist and
Tankersley on three different occasions on lap 22.
Ricky Weeks of Rutherfordton, NC got the ball rolling when he stalled
his
A&A Asphalt/Thomas Paving Mastersbilt/Cornett Taurus in turn four
on lap 22.
During the caution period, Bloomquist went to the pit area to change tires,
sending him to the tail of the field for the restart.
When the field went green, McDowell led Mars, Birkhofer, and Pearson
into
the first turn, while Hommel and Clements battled for the fifth spot.
Clements passed Hommel for fifth down the backstretch on lap 22, but the
two
cars made contact in turn four, and Clements spun his Convenience One-Stop
Barry Wright/Clements Grand Prix in turn four.
Clements' brought out the caution flag again for another lap 22 restart,
in
which Clements had to go to the tail for bringing out the yellow. McDowell
led the restart followed by Mars, Birkhofer, Pearson, Hommel, Moran,
Tankersley, Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC, Schlieper, and Ivey.
On the next restart, Tankersley cut down a left-rear tire and spun in
turn
two. The field stayed green on the next restart, with Eckert moving into
the top ten. During this green flag run, McDowell began to pull away from
Mars, and at one point, had a half-straightaway lead. Birkhofer stayed
within striking distance of Mars, and Pearson held on to the fourth spot.
Moran stayed with Hommel to battle for the fifth spot, and Schlieper
was
contesting the seventh position with Franklin. Neither Bloomquist,
Clements, nor Tankersley were showing any success in working their way
back
through the field.
While running fifth, Hommel stalled the Alert Oil and Gas Warrior/Pro
Power
Monte Carlo in turn four to bring out the caution flag. While the field
circled the track under yellow, McDowell went to the pits with a cut down
right-rear tire. The four-inch gash would cost McDowell $2,500 an inch.
Mars took over the point followed by Birkhofer, Pearson, Moran, Franklin,
Schlieper, Ivey, Eckert, Francis, and Miller. Mars held Birkhofer behind
him by three car lengths when the field went back to green flag action,
and
then stretched it out to as much as seven car-lengths.
Moran closed in on Pearson to battle for third. Moran would close on
Pearson and look inside getting in the corners, but Pearson had the
advantage over Moran coming off the turns. Franklin was beginning to close
on the battle for third, but in this race, fifth position was a bad omen.
First Clements, then Hommel, and on lap 47, it was Franklin costing to
a
stop on the frontstretch while running fifth, and brought out the final
yellow flag of the race. Franklin was done for the night in the Hamricks
of
Gaffney Mastersbilt/Cornett Taurus. Mars was able to keep Birkhofer behind
him by five car-lengths in the four-lap dash to the checkered flag.
McDowell, who ended up finishing 17th, was the Ringers Gloves Fast Qualifier
among the 35 entrants, and by doing so, clinched the overall Ringers Glove
Fast Season Award for Birkhofer. With eight fast times during the season,
Birkhofer will pick up a $5,000 bonus at the end of the season.
McDowell turned the 1/2-mile high-banked clay oval in 19.878 seconds
for an
average speed of 90.552 miles per hour. McDowell also won the first heat.
Birkhofer won the second heat race, and the four-lap Action Performance
Dash. Weeks won the 10-lap Bert Transmission Consolation Race.
