Outlaws’ Eastern Tour to Climax at Bridgeport
By Richard Day

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (October 1) – Danny Lasoski, nicknamed "Catfish" by car owner and NASCAR Winston Cup champion a few years ago because he loves to race in the low groove, might just as well be nicknamed "Big Track" during the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ Silver Anniversary Season.

"The Dude," as his grandfather nicknamed within hours of his birth, has recorded eight of his 10 "A" Feature victories at larger racing facilities in 2003. His affinity for big, sweeping tracks has Lasoski eager for Sunday’s Eastern Tour Finale at Bridgeport Speedway’s semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval.

Bridgeport Speedway is one of only nine of 50 tracks the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will visit this season where points leader Steve Kinser has yet to win. Only six of Kinser’s 23 main event victories in 2003 have come at tracks a half-mile or larger in length, and three of those were at Eldora Speedway. "The King of the Outlaws" won the main event at Rolling Wheels Raceway – the only other 5/8-mile oval the series visits – on May 28th, however.

The defending and 17-time series champion opened a season-high 74-point lead over Lasoski Saturday with a flag-to-flag victory at the Talladega Short Track. Kinser has raced into the top 10 in 53 of 59 main events, including 42 in the top five. He has also won 23 "A" Features, six Preliminary Features and 25 Dash Races, all of which lead the series.

Sammy Swindell recorded the first clean sweep in O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series history the last time the series visited Bridgeport Speedway – on August 7, 1995 – setting the single-lap record and winning the First Heat Race, the Dash Race and the "A" Feature.

Lasoski recorded the series’ first preliminary clean sweep during the 11th Annual Harvest Classic August 30th at Calistoga Speedway.

Geringer, Luck & Rode LLC to Sponsor Pittman

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA (September 30) – Geringer, Luck & Rode LLC, or "GLR," has reached an agreement to be an associate sponsor of the #21 Sherdon Motorsports sprint car driven by Daryn Pittman in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws sprint car racing series.

"We are pleased to be associated with such a fine young man," said Chris Luck, managing general partner of GLR. "Daryn’s values and professionalism make him a perfect candidate to partner with GLR."

GLR joins Gaerte Engines, Mopar, Pepsi and Hop & Sack Convenience Stores as the team’s sponsors. The GLR logo will appear on the #21 for the first time when the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series invades Port Royal Speedway Thursday. The sponsorship will finish the 2003 season and extend to 2004.

Geringer, Luck & Rode LLC is a Scotts Valley, California, based investment firm. Founded in 2001, "GLR" immediately became active in World of Outlaws sprint car racing.

Pittman, the 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion, received the Manufacturers Hard Charger award last season. The Owasso, OK, driver ranked fourth in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings. He has won "A" Features at Lakeside Speedway, K-C Raceway and The Raceway at Powercom Park this year.

O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series Heads to Pennsylvania
By Richard Day

PORT ROYAL, PA (September 29) – The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint car racing teams will face their toughest local competition of the season this week when they race against the "Pennsylvania Posse."

Sprint car racing’s premier series will run a $51,600 event at Port Royal Speedway Thursday, then sanction the 41st Annual Williams Grove National Open at Williams Grove Speedway Friday and Saturday.

Steve Kinser increased his advantage in the standings to a season-high 74 points Saturday when he dominated the Talladega Short Track event. The defending and 17-time series champion paced the qualifying session, won the First Dash Race and led all 40 laps from the pole in the "A" Feature. The $10,000 victory was Kinser’s 23rd of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ Silver Anniversary Season. Since exchanging the points lead with 2001 series champion Danny Lasoski in early September, "The King of the Outlaws" has won four of the last five main events.

Kinser is winless in five "A" Features at Port Royal’s semi-banked, ½-mile oval, but has won 23 main events at legendary Williams Grove Speedway. Lasoski won a Preliminary Feature at "The Grove" on July 25, 2002, but suffered multiple injuries in a crash one night later.

Only six of Kinser’s 23 main event victories in 2003 have come at tracks a half-mile or larger in length, and three of those were at Eldora Speedway. "The Dude" has recorded eight of his 10 "A" Feature victories on half-mile ovals like Port Royal and Williams Grove this year.

Sixteen drivers, including other O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series regulars Joey Saldana, Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Brian Paulus, Paul McMahan, Tim Shaffer and Jason Meyers, have won main events this season. Schatz won the Second Preliminary Feature and the "A" Feature at the Second Annual Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway in late July.

Defending and three-time Williams Grove National Open champion Lance Dewease will lead the "Pennsylvania Posse" against the Outlaws. Dewease raced past 12 cars to claim the $30,000 first prize a year ago.

Don Kreitz, Jr., who won the Preliminary Feature on opening night of the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove July 24th, won a main event at Port Royal Speedway on May 28, 1986. He has won five O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Williams Grove Speedway, including the 1993 National Open.

Three other "Pennsylvania Posse" front-runners have beaten the Outlaws at Williams Grove Speedway: Greg Hodnett, Fred Rahmer and Keith Kauffman.

Kinser Increases Points Lead With Talladega Victory
By Richard Day

TALLADEGA, AL (September 27) – Steve Kinser increased his lead in the standings to a season-high 74 points Saturday when he dominated the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series event at the Talladega Short Track.

The defending and 17-time series champion put together a near-perfect performance, setting fast time, winning the First Dash Race and leading all 40 laps in the “A” Feature. All that kept “The King of the Outlaws” from a clean sweep was a second-place finish in the First Heat Race.

Kinser held off Tim Shaffer in dense lapped traffic through the final 15 laps to claim his 23rd victory of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ 25th Anniversary Season. “The King of the Outlaws” has won two of the six main events the series has run at the Talladega Short Track.

“When you get to traffic and everybody has heat in their tires, it gets to be where everyone’s almost the same speed, and I figured someone would be coming,” Kinser said following the 494th main event victory of his career. “You have to have experience, but you have to have a good car too, and we had a good car all night. (Crew chief) Scott (Gerkin) has done an outstanding job with this race team all year long. We proved at Calistoga that the points can go away pretty quickly, so we just have to keep plugging along to then end and hope it all comes out right.”

Danny Lasoski, who led the point standings for most of the season, swept the Harvest Classic at Calistoga Speedway in late August, but Kinser passed him two days later with a victory at Thunderbowl Raceway. “The Dude” drove NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle past six cars to finish sixth at the Talladega Short Track Saturday.

“The King of the Outlaws” paced the qualifying session with a 12.315-second lap around the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval. He earned the privilege of starting the “A” Feature on the pole by winning his 25th Dash Race of the year.

Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the lead immediately after the green flag fell in the main event. First Heat Race winner Donny Schatz passed Steve’s son, Kraig, for sixth place with an inside move between turns three and four late in the second lap.

The leaders were approaching lapped traffic two laps later when Johnny Herrera spun over the bank in the third corner. Joey Saldana and Shaffer exchanged fourth place during the lap after the race resumed. Saldana steered his family’s #17 Eagle Raceway Maxim into the low groove in turn three to pass the 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, but Shaffer came back with an inside move in the fourth corner to regain the position. Saldana and Shaffer took turns passing each other again during lap six.

Kinser was nine car-lengths ahead of Paul McMahan when he entered lapped traffic the next time around. Saldana lost fifth place early in the ninth lap when he collided with Scott Wimberly and stopped in turn two.

Kinser controlled the ensuing restart and opened a 10 car-length advantage within four laps. Shaffer and Schatz passed Daryn Pittman for third and fourth place during laps 17 and 24. Shaffer, who won the Third Heat Race, continued his run toward the front late in the 26th lap when he drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle around McMahan high in turn four.

Schatz raced wheel-to-wheel with McMahan through the third and fourth corners the next time around, but was unable to drive the #15 Parker Stores J&J into third place.

Kraig Kinser surrendered seventh place early in lap 29 when he spun in turn two. Steve Kinser raced away from Shaffer as the green flag replaced the yellow, and caught the back-markers with a five-car-length advantage five laps later. Shaffer caught “The King of the Outlaws,” however, and was racing nose-to-tail with him in dense traffic when Saldana collided with ninth-place Jeremy Scott in turn four late in the 35th lap.

McMahan challenged Shaffer for the runner-up spot three laps after the race resumed, but was unable to drive the #11H Vivarin Maxim into second place.

Kinser was 10 car-lengths ahead of Shaffer when he entered lapped traffic early in the final lap, and took the checkered flag with eight car-lengths to spare.

McMahan finished in third place, ahead of Schatz, Pittman, Lasoski, Jason Meyers, 14th-starting Jason Sides, Kraig Kinser and Jonathan Allard, who started outside the eighth row.

Rain, which fell during the hot-lap session, delayed the beginning of the event for almost 1½ hours.

The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will run a $51,600 event at Port Royal Speedway Thursday, then sanction the 41st Annual Williams Grove National Open at Williams Grove Speedway Friday and Saturday. WoO

Outlaws to Return to Talladega Short Track
By Richard Day

TALLADEGA, AL (September 22) – Danny Lasoski increased his advantage lead to 14 points over Steve Kinser when he won the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at the Talladega Short Track in early April.

Forty-eight events later, Lasoski finds himself trailing "The King of the Outlaws" by 58 points in their battle for the series’ 25th Anniversary championship. "The Dude" took the lead when he swept the Harvest Classic at Calistoga Speedway in late August, only to lose it when Kinser won at Thunderbowl Raceway two days later.

Lasoski sees Saturday’s $51,600 event at the Talladega Short Track as an opportunity to cut into Kinser’s advantage. "The Dude" has won the last two races at the semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval, but will have plenty of competition for the $10,000 first prize as 16 drivers have combined to win the first 58 "A" Features.

Kinser, who won the Eagle Nationals in late June, finished in the top five in each feature race while Lasoski ran 14th on both nights of the 14th Annual One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals at Husker Auto Group Eagle Raceway last weekend.

Lasoski has driven NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle to victory in 10 "A" Features, including the Ford Dealers of Iowa Knoxville Nationals. Both "The Dude" and Kinser have 52 top-10 finishes, including 41 in the top five. "The King of the Outlaws" has won 22 main events and six preliminaries.

Kenny Woodruff, whose car won the first O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series main event on March 18, 1978, had a profound effect on the One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals. Tim Shaffer’s new crew chief prepared the #83 Beef Packers Eagle the 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year drove to victory in Friday’s Preliminary Feature. As Donny Schatz’s crew chief in 2001 and 2002, "KW" convinced the team to switch to J&J Chassis. Schatz drove the #15 Parker Stores J&J to victory in Saturday’s main event. WoO

Schatz Wins One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals
By Richard Day

EAGLE, NE (September 20) – Donny Schatz set a personal record for “A” Feature victories in a season Saturday at Husker Auto Group Eagle Raceway when he led all 40 laps to win the 14th Annual One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals.

The $15,000 victory was Schatz’s seventh of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ Silver Anniversary Season. The 1997 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year won six main events in 2001.

"This is my first win at Eagle Raceway," Schatz said. “That’s exciting for the Parker Stores team. But even more important for our team is we got our 11th win of the year (counting Preliminary Features). At the beginning of the season, one of the goals we set as a team was to score more wins than I had previously in my World of Outlaws career. There is great satisfaction in the accomplishment and builds confidence in everyone involved with the team. The next step is to continue our winning ways the rest of the season; head to Australia and rack up some wins there so we are in championship form when the 2004 season begins. The momentum will be just the ticket to start the march for the World of Outlaws title next year. Every race we win between now and then builds excitement in our team and our sponsors.

“I’m glad to get this win. It’s been a busy week, and I was a little tired coming in here. I was hoping nobody was pushing me there at the end because I was having trouble getting by lapped cars. They were racing two-wide in front of me, and that’s just how it goes. We finished second to the Million Dollar Man (Jac Haudenschild) last year, and I’m glad he’s on the other side of the country tonight.

Schatz earned the privilege of starting the main event on the pole by beating Preliminary Feature winner Tim Shaffer across the finish line in the Dash Race.

“Getting that Dash win was pretty important for me, with the inside being so good for the starts,” Schatz said. “That first start (in the Dash Race), Tim tried to run me high, but I’ve raced with Kenny (Woodruff) before, and I know how he thinks. We were able to get it done in the dash, and that just set us up for the “A” Feature.”

Schatz drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J into the lead as the green flag fell in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ 58th main event of the year. Series points leader Steve Kinser passed Shaffer and Joey Saldana during the third and fifth laps to claim third place.

Schatz was .7 seconds ahead of Paul McMahan when he entered lapped traffic seven laps into the race. Fast qualifier Terry McCarl and Daryn Pittman exchanged sixth place during laps 11 and 15 as Schatz built a comfortable advantage. Donny opened a 3.4-second lead on McMahan during the 24th lap.

Jason Meyers drove the #7 VMAC Maxim past seven cars during the first 20 laps, but lost 10th place when he collided with Collin Northway in the second corner early in lap 25. The caution opened the track ahead of the leaders and tightened the field.

Saldana, whose crew replaced the engine in his #17 Eagle Raceway Maxim before the Dash Race, passed Pittman in the low groove between turns one and two early in the 27th lap, only to have Pittman regain fifth place with an inside move heading into the fourth corner the next time around.

Kinser, who won the Eagle Nationals at Husker Auto Group Eagle Raceway June 28th, battled McMahan during laps 37 and 38, but was unable to drive his #11 Quaker State Maxim into second place. Schatz raced away while the battle for the runner-up spot raged, and took the checkered flag with 3.9 seconds to spare.

Kinser’s third-place finish increased his O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points lead to 58 points as Danny Lasoski finished 14th. Shaffer finished fourth, ahead of Pittman, Saldana, McCarl, Meyers, Johnny Herrera and “B” Feature winner Kelly Kinser.

Shane Stewart won the Fourth Heat Race and passed five cars to finish 11th in the “A” Feature. Ricky Logan raced into 16th place from outside the 11th row.

McCarl paced the qualifying session with a 103.315-M.P.H. lap around the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval.

Saturday’s O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series event at the Talladega Short Track will be run in conjunction with Sunday’s EA Sports 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at the Tallaega Superspeedway. WoO

Shaffer Soars in One/Third-Mile Nationals Preliminary
By Richard Day

EAGLE, NE (September 19) – Tim Shaffer dominated the Preliminary Feature when the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series opened the 14th Annual One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals Friday at Husker Auto Group Eagle Raceway, leading all 30 laps from outside the front row.

The $5,000 victory was Shaffer’s second Preliminary Feature victory of the series’ 25th Anniversary Season. The 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle to victory in both feature races during the J.D. Byrider Outlaw Nationals at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track early in the year.

“We really needed this,” Shaffer yelled to the capacity crowd. “My car was great all night long. (Crew chief) Kenny Woodruff just came on with us a couple of weeks ago, and he’s making things happen. Kenny and Scott (Vogelsong) did a great job tonight. I could run this car anywhere on the race track.

“The Beef Packers car has been fast all year long, but we’ve just struggled. It feels good to win here tonight. Things were starting to get ugly there (in lapped traffic), so I had to tell myself to just settle down and not do anything stupid. I didn’t hear anyone around me, so I just took my time to pick through the cars. I didn’t want to end up sitting sideways spun out in the middle of the track.”

Shaffer, the ninth-fastest qualifier in the 49-car field, earned the privilege of starting the evening’s feature race on the front row by winning the Second Dash Race.

As the drivers lined up for the Preliminary Feature, Shaffer’s Beef Packers teammate, Sammy Swindell, turned sideways in the second corner. Swindell collided with Brian Brown, causing the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim to flip. Brown was unable to start the race, so Ricky Logan replaced him at the back of the pack. Terry McCarl crashed into the turn-four wall as the green flag fell, bringing out the caution flag.

Pole-sitter Joey Saldana burst into the lead as the green flag replaced the yellow, but Shaffer passed him deep in the second corner. Second-row starters Shane Stewart and Johnny Herrera exchanged third place during the opening lap.

Donny Schatz, who started outside the fourth row, drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J past Herrera in the low groove between turns one and two for fourth place 1½ laps later.

Shaffer was 1.8 seconds ahead of Saldana when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Brian Paulus spun into Heat Race winners Danny Lasoski and Kerry Madsen in the fourth corner the next time around, opening the track ahead of the leaders. Lasoski and Madsen, who lost 11th and 12th place, respectively, restarted at the rear of the field. The front end on the #4M MIN Motorsports MCI collapsed as race resumed, putting Stewart out of the race.

Shaffer controlled the ensuing restart and opened a 1.2-second advantage in lapped traffic during lap 11. Swindell, who raced past 11 cars during the first 10 laps, took 10th place from Kraig Kinser with a high move in the fourth corner three laps later.

Shaffer was 2.5 seconds ahead of Saldana midway through the race. Schatz rode the rim around Saldana between turns three and four to claim the runner-up spot late in the 18th lap.

Paul McMahan, who duplicated the single-lap record Saldana set at Eagle’s high-banked, 1/3-mile oval last September 20th, passed Herrera and Saldana during laps 21 and 25 to take over third place.

Shaffer opened a 3.3-second advantage with three laps remaining and was 2.9 seconds ahead of Schatz when he took the checkered flag.

"I had an awesome car tonight," Schatz said. "I could run anywhere I needed to on the track. (Crew chief) Tyler (Swank) and the guys gave me a great race car. Lapped traffic got a little hairy, so I had to be careful not to make any moves that would cost us second. I ran out of laps to catch Tim, but he was a man on a mission. The important part is we are locked in for tomorrow night. This is one of the best runs we have ever had at Eagle."

McMahan finished in third place, ahead of Saldana, O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser, Herrera, 13th-starting Jason Meyers, Jason Sides, Swindell and First Heat Race winner Brooke Tatnell. Logan raced past eight cars to finish 16th. WoO

Mark Kinser to Race for Grandstaff in October
By Richard Day

BARTLESVILLE, OK (September 18) – Two-time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion Mark Kinser will drive the #66 Trop Artic Maxim Eagle in October, team owner Court Grandstaff announced Thursday.

"Mark is going to drive for me at Delta Bowl Speedway, Lone Star Speedway and Houston Raceway Park," Grandstaff said. "This is just a four-race deal. Brooke Tatnell, my regular driver, is going home to Australia to take care of some business. Brooke will race for me at Eagle Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway before he leaves."

Kinser, who won O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series championships in 1996 and 1999, hasn’t raced since the Ford Dealers of Iowa Knoxville Nationals. His father, Karl Kinser, underwent an emergency appendectomy August 16th at Knoxville Area Community Hospital and returned home to Oolitic, IN, a week later to recover.

"Mark has plenty of experience and he’s proven himself to be a very good driver, so we’re looking forward to him racing for us," Grandstaff said.

Kinser, who won the May 17th main event at Hagerstown Speedway, ranks 11th in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings.

Tatnell became the first Australian to win an O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature when he pulled off a daring, last-lap pass of Sammy Swindell to win the Inaugural Track of Dreams Nationals August 18th at the Jetmore Motorplex.

Outlaws to Sanction One/Third-Mile Short-Track Nationals
By Richard Day

EAGLE, NE (September 15) – Steve Kinser survived an early collision that would have sent other, less Hulk-like drivers into the retaining wall, then dominated the "A" Feature to complete his sweep of the 20th Annual Eagle Nationals at Husker Auto Group Eagle Raceway June 28th.

"The King of the Outlaws" made it two-for-two in his #11 Quaker State Maxim with the special Hulk movie paint scheme, leading all 40 laps while completing his third double-feature sweep of the O’Reilly Outlaws Series’ Silver Anniversary Season.

"We were only going to run this (Hulk) car one week, but as good as it ran we might just have to run it again," Kinser said after successfully defending his Eagle Nationals title. "We had a good car all weekend. Scott Gerkin and all my guys have been working hard all year long. I did almost lose it on the first lap. Someone (outside pole-sitter Jason Meyers) ran into me – I don’t know what that was all about – but I knew I ran it in hard enough to stick on the bottom. We’re not really worried about getting 500 wins this year. We’re just trying to run hard and win races one night at a time."

Kinser won the 493rd O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature of his incomparable career Saturday at Hollywood Hills Speedway. It was his seventh victory in seven feature races at the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval in San Felipe Pueblo, NM. The $10,000 victory, his 22nd of the season, pushed him 27 points ahead of 2001 series champion Danny Lasoski in their season-long battle for the championship.

"The King of the Outlaws" will be the driver to beat this weekend when the series sanctions the 14th Annual One/Third-Mile Short-Track Nationals at Husker Auto Group Eagle Raceway Friday and Saturday. He will have plenty of competition waiting for him though, as 16 drivers have combined to win the first 57 main events.

Kinser became the only driver to win both the Eagle Nationals and the One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals in the same season in 1995.

Kinser Extends Winning Streak at Hollywood Hills
By Richard Day

SAN FELIPE PUEBLO, NM (September 13) – Steve Kinser extended his Hollywood Hills Speedway winning streak to seven features Saturday while increasing his O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points lead to 27.

The defending and 17-time series champion passed pole-sitter Jason Sides late in the second lap and held off the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate throughout the final 28¼ laps to remain undefeated at San Felipe Pueblo’s semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval.

“We’ve run good here every time,” said Kinser, who won his first feature race at Hollywood Hills on March 9, 2002. “It was really tough to pass tonight. I caught Jason coming out of turn four and just held on from there.

“We have a long way to go (10 events over 15 dates), and there are a lot of races left. It’s been back and forth (at the top of the standings) all year long, and I don’t see that changing now.”

Kinser’s 22nd “A” Feature victory of the season added 14 points to his advantage over 2001 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion Danny Lasoski, who finished in fifth place

“The King of the Outlaws,” the 12th-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field, won every race he entered Saturday: the Fourth Heat Race, the Second Dash Race and the 30-lap main event.

Sides, who won the First Dash Race, drove the #7S Aramark/Ozark Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the 57th main event of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ Silver Anniversary Season. Bud Goodwin flipped in turn three, however, bringing back the original start. Jeff Slinkard, Johnny Herrera and First Heat Race winner Paul McMahan were also involved in the crash, but none of the drivers were injured.

Sides, burst into the lead again when the green flag replaced the red. Kinser, whose crew replaced the engine in his #11 Quaker State Maxim following the qualifying session, chased Sides for 1 ¾ laps before passing him deep in the fourth corner.

Shane Stewart, competing with the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series for the first time since the August 18th event at the Jetmore Motorplex, started outside the sixth row. He raced past two cars during the first two laps, then took the low line through turn four to pass Jason Meyers for ninth place the next time around. Stewart and Second Heat Race winner Gary Taylor were battling for eighth place late in lap five, when their collision sent Taylor spinning into the infield.

The leaders were approaching lapped traffic four laps later when “B” Feature winner Jonathan Allard spun off the front stretch and into the infield.

Fast qualifier Donny Schatz steered his #15 Parker Stores J&J into the low groove in turn four to pass Brian Brown on the restart, then took third place from Tim Shaffer three laps later.

Kinser was 2.9 seconds ahead of Sides when he entered lapped traffic midway through the race. Jason Martin lost 10th place and opened the track ahead of the leaders three laps later when he spun in the fourth corner.

Brown drove the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim past Shaffer deep in turn three to take over fourth place within a lap after the race resumed.

Kinser enjoyed a 3.4-second advantage with 3½ laps remaining, only to have Sides cut it in half in dense lapped traffic within two laps.

Shaffer surrendered fourth place and set the stage for a two-lap dash to the checkered flag when the #83 Beef Packers Eagle spun in the fourth corner late in lap 29.

Kinser raced away as the green flag replaced the yellow, and took the checkered flag with 1.2 seconds to spare. Sides’ runner-up run tied his career-best finish in an O’Reilly World of Outlaws “A” Feature.

Schatz finished in third place, ahead of Brown, Lasoski, Stewart, Meyers, McMahan, 16th-starting Joey Saldana and Brian Paulus.

Mechanical problems in the #21 Hop & Sack J&J kept Daryn Pittman from starting the First Heat Race and from qualifying for the main event through the “B” Feature. His crew was replacing his engine as the green flag fell in the First Heat Race and a fuel leak forced him to start at the rear of the “B” Feature. Robert Gomez and Patrick Bourke were unable to take the green flag in the “A” Feature, however, allowing Pittman to start at the rear of the field. Given the opportunity to start the main event, the 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion raced past 12 cars to finish in 12th place.

The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will sanction the One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals at Eagle Raceway Friday and Saturday. WoO

World of Outlaws Gets Ready to Race ‘Down Under’
By Richard Day

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (September 9) – The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series, led by points leader Steve Kinser, is already making plans to open its 2004 season in Australia January 8-10.

Fifteen of the top 20 drivers in sprint car racing’s premier series will travel to Parramatta City Racewayto run the first points event of its 27th season for $148,000.

"We are excited that the Outlaws organization has taken note of our significance on the world sprint car racing landscape firstly," Brian Healy said. "Secondly, we see this announcement as further vindication of the large sums of money spent by Bob Spence and myself in improving our facility. This is a red-letter day in Australian speedway history."

Parramatta City Raceway is the center of sprint car racing in the Southern Hemisphere. The $148,000 (American) event will be the richest ever staged in Australia. International television coverage is also planned for this landmark event.

"We are thrilled to bring the World of Outlaws series to Australia and Parramatta City Raceway," O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series President Ted Johnson said. "This definitely progresses our series into a truly international championship. Australians drivers have raced with the World of Outlaws for many years and this is a logical and exciting progression for our organization."

Steve Kinser, who is racing for his 18th O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series championship, can’t wait to race in Australia again.

"It is well known that I have had a long and close relationship with Parramatta City Raceway and the people involved with it," Kinser said. "I am excited that we are heading ‘Down Under’ to race in 2004."

Brooke Tatnell, the only Australian driver to win an "A" Feature in O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series history, is looking forward to racing against sprint car racing’s best on his turf.

"I learned to drive a sprint car at Parramatta City Raceway and to have the World of Outlaws race there will be a very special moment for Australian sprint car racing," Tatnell said. "I can’t wait to see it here. The World of Outlaws is the best sprint car racing there is. When you race well against them, it is a significant accomplishment."

Defending World Series Sprint Cars champion Daryn Pittman and 2003 Parramatta City Raceway Parts Plus winner Joey Saldana will join Kinser, Tatnell and two-time Grand Annual Sprint Car Classic and Summer Slam winner Donny Schatz in the milestone event.

The contract between the sprint car racing’s premier series and Australia’s showcase facility says the World of Outlaws will race at Parramatta City Raceway in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

"This is a three-year deal and frankly, we see this as the start of a long-term relationship which will see Parramatta City Raceway as Australia’s home of the World of Outlaws," PCR Managing Director Steven Green said. "We also hope that by bringing the Outlaws here to Australia, that we can help make the day of an Australian winning the World of Outlaws championship a reality."

The World of Outlaws has raced internationally before, but only in countries bordering the United States. Sammy Swindell won the four races "the greatest show on dirt" ran at Winnipeg Speedway in Winnipeg, Manitoba, CA, in 1981 and 1982 and Kinser won at Autopista Juarez in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, in 1992. Karl Kinser Recovers from Surgery
By Richard Day

OOLITIC, IN (September 8) – It’s almost impossible to keep a living legend down.

Karl Kinser, who missed his first Ford Dealers of Iowa Knoxville Nationals in 27 years when he was taken to Knoxville Area Community Hospital August 16th for an emergency appendectomy, is recovering at his home these days.

"I’ll remember that Nationals," Kinser said with a laugh Monday. "I was there for the races and I couldn’t believe I was going to get sick and not be able to go. I couldn’t do much more than get out of bed for two days at the motel and finally, I had to get up and go. I missed being at the track, but was only about five blocks away."

Kinser, who has won 17 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series car owner championships, has even been tinkering with his #5M SABKO Maxim. Karl’s son, Mark, finished 16th in the Nationals championship race despite racing with a heavy heart. The two-time series champion has not raced during his father’s recovery.

Mark and his wife, Cindy, drove Kinser home to Oolitic after he spent a week in the hospital. Karl still visits his local doctor for checkups as he completes his recovery.

"I’m doing good," Karl said. "I’m getting back on my feet full strength now. I’d say in another week or week and a half, I’ll be back 100 percent. I can be up now for three or four hours, then I need to go rest a little bit. When I first got home, I couldn’t be up 45 minutes or an hour.

"We’re hoping to get arranged around here and go racing again soon. It’s a good possibility the car will be at Eagle (Raceway for the One/Third-Mile Short Track Nationals September 19-20). Mark’s run there enough; he can run there without me. I’m hoping to go to the Williams Grove National Open (October 3-4)." WoO

World of Outlaws to Return to Hollywood Hills
By Richard Day

SAN FELIPE PUEBLO, NM (September 8) – The fierce battle for the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series Silver Anniversary championship will resume at Hollywood Hills Speedway Saturday.

Standings leader Steve Kinser increased his advantage to 13 points over Danny Lasoski by successfully defending his Gold Cup Race of Champions title at Silver Dollar Speedway last weekend. Saturday’s $20,000 victory was the 19th straight single-digit finish for "The King of the Outlaws," who has won all six feature races at Hollywood Hills.

Kinser, defending and 17-time series champion, took the points lead with a third-place finish at The Raceway at Powercom Park August 3rd. "The Dude" regained the lead by winning all three feature races during Calistoga Speedway’s Harvest Classic in late August, only to have Kinser move past him with a victory at Thunderbowl Raceway.

Lasoski, who led the point standings for 45 of the first 46 events, has recorded 11 straight single-digit finishes in main events. "The Dude," the series leader with 25 fast times, set Hollywood Hills’ single-lap record with a 105.916-M.P.H. lap in March.

A strong field of fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint cars is expected to invade the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval. Joey Saldana and Paul McMahan, who won Preliminary Features during the Gold Cup, will also challenge Kinser for the $10,000 first prize. Other O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series regulars, including Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Jason Sides, Brian Paulus and Jason Meyers, will join racers from New Mexico, Arizona and Texas in the $51,600 event.

SLS Promotions, headed by Scott Boyd, will promote the event. SLS has promoted successful events at The Raceway at Powercom Park in Wisconsin, Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana and Hartford Speedway Park in Michigan during the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series 25th Anniversary Season. WoO

Kinser Defends Gold Cup Race of Champions Title
Richard Day

CHICO, CA (September 6) – Steve Kinser passed Joey Saldana early and held off hard-charging Danny Lasoski Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway on his way to successfully defending his Gold Cup Race of Champions title.

“The King of the Outlaws” drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Saldana in the low groove between turns three and four late in the 11th lap and beat Lasoski under the checkered flag by two car-lengths to claim his 11th Gold Cup championship. The $20,000 victory also pushed Kinser 13 points ahead of “The Dude” in their battle for the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ 25th Anniversary title.

“I’ve been coming back here a long time,” said Kinser, who won his first Gold Cup championship in 1979. “I won my first Gold Cup at West Capital (Speedway in Sacramento), so that tells you how long I’ve been coming here. John (Padjen, the promoter) does a great job for the fans with the fairgrounds and the race track, and we just have a lot of fun here. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep running like this – I guess until these kids start beating me – but until then we’ll just keep coming back.”

Saldana and Kinser tied for the preliminary points lead with 535. Saldana, who started on the pole because he won the Preliminary Feature on opening night, drove his family’s #17 Eagle Raceway Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the 40-lap main event.

Jeff Hodgson and Kevin Plylant collided and flipped into Blake Robertson in turn three early in the third lap. The red flag was flying again three laps later when 2002 Silver Dollar Speedway champion Jonathan Allard spun and turned over in the fourth corner. Jac Haudenschild, who won Gold Cup titles in 1998 and 1999, slid over the bank in turn four within a lap after the race resumed, bringing out the caution flag.

Two-time Silver Dollar Speedway champion Tim Kaeding took the high line through turns three and four to pass Dennis Moore, Jr., and Jason Meyers for eighth place on the ensuing restart. Paul McMahan, who won Friday’s Preliminary Feature, used a similar move between the first and second corners to pass Sammy Swindell for sixth place two laps later.

Kinser took the lead late in lap 11 and was three car-lengths ahead of Saldana when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. Lasoski, who won the 2000 Gold Cup, steered NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the low groove in turn four to pass Saldana for the runner-up spot late in the 14th lap.

Peter Murphy’s second-corner spin tightened the field and opened the track ahead of the leaders midway through the race. Tim Shaffer collided with Saldana while trying to pass him for third place and flipped in the fourth corner within a lap after the green flag replaced the yellow.

Moore and McMahan raced around Meyers in turn one for fifth and sixth place as the race resumed. Shaffer stopped in turn four, Allard pitted to replace a flat right rear tire and Saldana’s coasted off the track with front end problems late in lap 21.

Kinser controlled the restart and opened a straightaway advantage within five laps. Lasoski narrowed the gap to eight car-lengths in dense lapped traffic by the 33rd lap, then closed to within two car-lengths three laps later when “The King of the Outlaws” had problems passing Shaffer. Lasoski caught Kinser the next time around and threatened to take the lead during the final three laps, but finished two car-lengths behind.

“I’d pretty much made my mind up that I was going to run the bottom,” Kinser said. “I knew I wouldn’t get by Joey off the top on the start, but my biggest concern was beating Danny to the bottom in turn one. From there, I just paced myself and waited to see what would happen to the high side of the track. I never did really get up on the top until right at the end there. I don’t know what I was doing messing around up there, but I was really handling on the bottom in three and four.”

McMahan finished in third place, ahead of Meyers, Jason Sides, Swindell, 14th-starting Donny Schatz, Andy Forsberg, Daryn Pittman and Kaeding. Forsberg and Pittman each passed 11 cars to finish eighth and ninth, respectively. Peter Murphy raced into 11th place from outside the 12th row.

The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will run a $51,600 event at Hollywood Hills Speedway in San Felipe Pueblo, NM, Saturday. WoO

“This is the greatest thing,” said McMahan, who once lived in nearby Oroville, CA. “My whole California swing has just stunk, but thanks to Vivarin, Selma Shell, David Helm, Sonny Kratzer and everybody. I just want to thank all the fans for coming out tonight.

“When Greg drove by me, I said ‘that guy is leading this thing.’ But then, I got a good run up on the top, and he kind of missed the bottom. Then I went back down low on the track or he would’ve driven right back by me. I just can’t ask for anything better than this!”

McMahan beat DeCaires across the finish line in the Second Dash Race to claim the front row outside starting position. McMahan and pole-sitter Jason Meyers raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway as the green flag fell in the 30-lap race. Meyers, whose crew replaced the engine in the #7 VMAC Maxim before the qualifying session, took the lead with an inside move between the first and second corners. McMahan caught Meyers in turn three, but was unable to surge ahead.

DeCaires took the low line into the fourth corner to pass McMahan for second place the next time around, just seconds before Third Heat Race winner Johnny Gray spun in turn three. Danny Lasoski took the high line through the third corner to pass Tommy Tarlton and Andy Forsberg, but a collision involving Jim Skinner and First Heat Race winner Ryan Flynn brought out the caution flag and nullified the move.

McMahan and DeCaires exchanged second place during the second and third laps, before Lasoski took the high line around Forsberg in turn two for fifth place.

DeCaires won a front-stretch drag race with Meyers to take the lead early in lap six.

Gray’s third-corner spin brought out the caution flag two laps later. Lasoski, the 2000 Gold Cup champion, took the low line through turn four to pass fast qualifier Sammy Swindell within a lap after the race resumed. Swindell, who won the Gold Cup in 1981, exchanged fourth place with “The Dude” twice in lap 10.

DeCaires was a straightaway ahead of Meyers when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. Flynn’s turn-four spin tightened the field and opened the track ahead of the leaders late in the 14th lap.

McMahan beat Meyers down the back stretch to regain second place midway through the race. The leaders were approaching lapped traffic the next time around when Fourth Heat Race winner Garrett Ishi spun over the bank in the third corner.

McMahan drove the #11H Vivarin Maxim into the lead with a high move through turn two early in lap 20, only to have DeCaires pass him deep in the first corner one lap later.

Brian Paulus gave the leaders an opportunity to breathe when he spun in turn three late in lap 23. McMahan chased DeCaires for almost a full lap after the green flag replaced the yellow, then executed the winning pass high in the fourth corner.

McMahan caught the back-markers with a three-car-length advantage early in the final lap, and took the checkered flag with five car-lengths to spare.

Lasoski finished in third place, ahead of Meyers, Swindell, 14th-starting Jonathan Allard, Tim Kaeding, Brad Furr, Daryn Pittman and Jim Carter. Paulus drove P and P Motorsports’ #28 Verdeilli Farms Maxim past eight cars during the final seven laps to claim 16th place.

Swindell paced the qualifying session with a 12.191-second lap around the high-banked, ¼-mile oval. WoO

Saldana Dominates Gold Cup Race of Champions Opener
By Richard Day

CHICO, CA (September 4) – Joey Saldana dominated the Preliminary Feature as the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series opened the 50th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions Thursday at Silver Dollar Speedway.

Saldana started on the pole and held off front-row starter Tim Shaffer throughout all 30 laps to win his first Preliminary Feature of the series’ Silver Anniversary Season.

"I just want to thank my guys for sticking with me this year," Saldana said. "We haven’t had a very good season. Having a son has shown me that there’s more to life than racing, but getting this win is pretty cool. We need to go out and win some more so that maybe someday he can be out here doing this. We’re just trying to make the most out of what’s left of the season. It’s really tough to race against these guys night in and night out. You don’t get to start up front very often, so when you do you’d better make the most of it."

Saldana, who ranks third in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings, was the seventh-fastest qualifier in Thursday’s 48-car field. Another 50 or so sprinters were scheduled to race for positions in Saturday’s $20,000-to-win championship feature Friday.

The 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening’s main event. "B" Feature winner Brad Sweet spun when his right rear tire lost air pressure late in the second lap.

Saldana controlled the ensuing restart, and was 10 car-lengths ahead of two-time Gold Cup champion Jac Haudenschild when he entered lapped traffic seven laps into the race. An injector problem forced Jason York to stop in the first corner three laps later, opening the track ahead of the leaders. Toni Lutar brought out the caution flag midway through the race when he spun in turn four.

Defending and 10-time Gold Cup champion Steve Kinser paced the qualifying session with an 11.859-second lap around the high-banked, ¼-mile oval. The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past three cars early, and exchanged fourth place with Shaffer during the race’s middle stages. Shaffer, who swept the J.D. Byrider Outlaw Nationals at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway early in the year, continued his run to the front late in the 17th lap when he passed Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Sides for third place.

Colby Weisz spun over the bank in turn two one lap later. Shaffer took advantage of the restart, steering the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove in the fourth corner to pass "The Wild Child" for the runner-up spot. Roger Crockett, the second-fastest qualifier, stopped on the back straightaway with mechanical problems two laps later.

Sides drove the #7S Aramark/Ozark Maxim past Haudenschild deep in the fourth corner to claim third place, while Kinser passed Donny Schatz for fifth within a lap after the race resumed.

Six car-lengths separated Saldana from Shaffer when the leaders caught the back-markers with 6½ laps remaining. York and Todd Carmichael collided and flipped in turn four the next time around, however, tightening the field and taking the leaders out of lapped traffic.

"The King of the Outlaws" won a back-stretch drag race with Haudenschild to claim fourth place within seconds after the green flag replaced the red. Carmichael’s 27th-lap spin in the second corner set the stage for a three-lap dash to the checkered flag.

Saldana raced away as the race resumed, while Sides challenged Shaffer for the runner-up spot. Joey took the checkered flag with 10 car-lengths to spare as all 24 cars completed the race.

"I thought Tim Shaffer was right on me," Saldana said. "A couple of lapped cars showed me the rubber right there in the middle, but luckily I went to the bottom when those cars (York and Carmichael) got together and flipped. Otherwise, I’d have been right in the middle of it."

Sides finished in third place, ahead of Kinser, Haudenschild, Schatz, Dennis Moore, Jr., Jason Statler, Kevin Pylant and Jeff Hodgson.

Statler, who won the final main event the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series ran at Santa Maria Speedway, was leading the Fourth Heat Race when Nick Ringo, Jr., spun in front of him. Statler lost the lead when he collided with Ringo, but raced back into fifth place to claim the final transfer position. Statler passed 12 cars to finish eighth in the Preliminary Feature. WoO
